Key features include her generous exterior deck spaces, as well as an extensive use of glazing and folding platforms to ensure guests are connected to the sea.&nbsp;Also known as Project 411, Noir has been designed by a skilled owner and his team. She is specifically sized to carry a 14-metre tender, allowing guests to explore further while onboard.&nbsp;Constructed from all-aluminium, her mast, boom, and integrated sailing system will be supplied by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a>. World renowned for the construction of record breaking super sailing and motor yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has built an international reputation on the quality of its vessels. But such excellence doesn’t happen overnight. Founded in 1884 and born from a family heritage of wooden boat building, the story of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>’s evolution to award-winning superyacht builder is an extraordinary one. Now celebrating its 140th anniversary, we took a look at some of the shipyard’s most notable milestones, to understand how this historic business has become a symbol of the international perception of Dutch quality, and its vision for the future. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302158/image/large-8e81484e61254715d5e713565d776d34.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302158">A Historic Legacy&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> officially dates its history back to the foundation of a boatyard in Ronduite, the Netherlands in 1884, beginning the familial legacy of boat building, initially with the construction of small wooden work and fishing boats. Situated close to the turbulent Zuiderzee (the inland sea to the north east of Amsterdam which is now the freshwater IJsselmeer), the Huisman’s boat building business was a key part of local life, but as the local fishing industry dwindled, so did the need for the Huisman boats. It was Jan Huisman, alongside his brother Jacob, that eventually made the decision to focus the yard’s energy’s on wooden sailing yachts and by the 1950s, the shipyard had begun to build its reputation on the construction of steel and aluminium vessels. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303052/image/large-40c16173cfd96905e8b99f9eb87e780c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303052">A pioneer from its earliest origins, the advent of aluminium in the 1960s was a turning point for the yard which innovated with the bending and welding of aluminium for hull construction. By the 1970s, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Huisman</a> had moved to its current location in Vollenhove where deeper water access and space heralded the growth of both the company and its yachts. In 1984, on its 100th anniversary, the shipyard was awarded its Royal warrant in recognition of good behaviour including tax paying and the quality of its work, recognising its now international track record for the construction of both large racing yachts and performance cruising yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/302159/image/large-3f87873567cd17e9ed98d3e72adf31cd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/302159">Now credited with the construction of nearly 200 unique vessels from eight to 90-metres, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has become one of the most productive bespoke builders in the world, and its existing fleet of more than 45 superyachts represents 140 years of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. Today the historic legacy of the shipyard is deeply embedded within its daily operations and is felt by members of the team, many of whom have remained with the company for decades, even generations. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300289/image/large-ad99abdef67ffa1130be254ef98f8a32.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300289">Innovation at its Heart&nbsp;With a deeply ingrained ethos of innovation baked into its roots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> has long been ahead of the curve when it comes to developments in yacht construction. The yachts currently in-build alone represent the diversity of the shipyard’s capabilities; the 85-metre New World Sloop that will be the largest single masted yacht in the world when launched in 2026; the 52-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Project 40652.0m (170'7&quot;)Royal Huisman2024">Project 406</a>, the world’s largest sportfisher motor yacht; and the 65-metre Aquarius II. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/17017/image/large-ebb895ce1e9bf7088738f93b5f74bc81.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17017">A forerunner with the use of aluminium and an early adopter of carbon composite components as early as 1997, the shipyard continues to pioneer today with the development of new construction methods. Most recently, the shipyard developed Featherlight, which utilises a high-grade mix between aluminium and carbon within its hulls and offers weight reductions of up-to 15 percent. Regatta performance, though often an aim, is not the only motivator behind the shipyard’s innovation efforts. With less power needed for motoring, the team was able to develop a new ‘tribrid’ propulsion system providing three power options with a battery bank allowing for silent operation. The 53.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> sailing yacht&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Gin VI53.9m (176'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2017">Pink Gin VI</a> is currently undergoing a 10-month refit at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a> base in Jakobstad, Finland. Regular maintenance and refit schedules have kept her in top condition, making the current work primarily aesthetic and performance-enhancing. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293910/image/large-c45f7ff9a1689e0427af7446544091ed.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293910">The yacht’s new owner acquired the world’s largest sloop-rigged, all-carbon sailing yacht earlier this year. Following an extended delivery from the Mediterranean, during which the owner assessed with designers precisely what he wanted to achieve, a refit program was initiated.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>’ Commercial Vice President Matthew Lester highlighted that the owner ”‘was very keen to bring the yacht back home, with the time spent onboard during the delivery cruise enabling him to identify necessary upgrades to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> 175 to match his personal taste”. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293913/image/large-70a71f2e85fc59bb9552cdf932b6e46e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293913">The interior refit involves a complete revamping of the owner’s suite, featuring unique timber furniture hand-carved by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>’ craftsmen. The yard is collaborating closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/758" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="North Sails (Company)">North Sails</a> and Rig Pro on a new sail plan, rigging alterations, and deck gear to optimise performance and take full advantage of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> 175’s design pedigree.&nbsp;At 70-metres, her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a> carbon mast is one of the tallest, 16-metres taller than a typical J-Class rig. Alterations include replacing the single, fixed backstay with running backstays to accommodate a square-top mainsail and deflectors replacing check stays to handle staysail loads. The bowsprit is being extended by 1.5-metres, and the fixed staysail stay will be removed to allow a modern, triple-headed sail plan for power reaching. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293911/image/large-a61990dd947251e8a1d6cc1145387712.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293911">Finnish designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jarkko Jämsén - Aivan (Company)">Jarkko Jämsén</a> has worked on the subtle re-styling of the main cockpit’s fixed bimini, retrofitted by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>’ Service and Refit operation in Palma in 2022. The iconic 54m Baltic sailing yacht Pink Gin VI is currently undergoing a 10-month refit at the Baltic Yachts base in Finland.

The 100-metre Wing 100 sailing yacht concept was first unveiled by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> a year ago and claims to redefine the performance, handling and energy efficiency of large sailing yachts by harnessing wing mast technology. But does such a rig make sense for a super-sized yacht?Wing masts have been gaining momentum as an efficient and sustainable solution for both the commercial and superyacht sectors in recent years. The rotating airfoil-shaped wing mast makes a smooth transition from mast to sail on the leeward side. This provides cleaner airflow around the mast, thus less drag and more power driving the vessel (the shipyard calculates the yacht will be capable of 24 knots under sail). The wing mast dimensions and structure can also take greater compressive loads without buckling, so can be self-supporting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242377/image/large-8dc56b79aba5c3642748042f75baa16d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242377">Moreover, conventional sailing rigs require time and crew effort to set, manage and take down, meaning that shorter passages are often made under power. The rig system of the Wing 100 is based on a proven concept and the mainsails and staysails of the combination wing mast/soft sail rig can be set in a matter of minutes.“The&nbsp;Wing 100 is designed as a sailing yacht with a very efficient sail plan aimed at minimising crew requirements whilst maximising sailing capability,” says Erik Wassen, senior designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a> in Amsterdam, which worked with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> on the concept (the interior design is by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4404" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mark Whiteley Design (Company)">Mark Whiteley</a>). “The Wing 100 has the ability to feather the main sails for unfurling, furling or reefing, even when sailing deep courses. Not a problem for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>, which can draw on the expertise of its sister company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/458" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rondal B.V. (Company)">Rondal</a>, a leader in the manufacture of very large composite masts and integrated sail management systems. In fact, the Wing 100 concept has two 73-metre, free-standing wing masts with airfoil profiles, and each mast is complemented with a single in-boom furling mainsail and furling jib. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242372/image/large-c04da969675f8baa8368d4f634d66869.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242372">“The masts are able to rotate 250 degrees, or 125 degrees each side, to allow changes to the sail set without changing course,” says Wassen. “The free-standing wing masts have no standing rigging or associated deck clutter and the masts are rotated relative to the boom by hydraulic rams. By changing the mast rotation angle the shape of the airfoil can be adjusted to maximise or reduce the power generated by the rigs.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects&nbsp;</a>was instrumental in the development of the Dynarig and sail-assisted cargo ships, although <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> is at pains to point out that the Wing 100 is a true sailing yacht and not a heavy sail-assisted motoryacht. Like the Dynarig, however, the concept is designed to appeal not only to die-hard sailors, but also motoryacht owners looking to reduce their environmental footprint.“Sustainability is crucially important for all of us and for future generations,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> CEO, Jan Timmerman. “Yacht owners and the yachting industry obviously want to contribute by reducing environmental impact and by limiting the use of valuable natural resources.”The Wing 100 will have an electric propulsion system that can be adapted to alternative power sources as new fuels or hydrogen fuel cells become available. A hydro generator powers the onboard systems and charges the battery bank. While under sail up to 200 kilowatts of energy can be harvested in this fashion, which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> claims is equivalent to a fuel saving of over 40,000 litres during the course of a year. The renewable energy systems further include 480 square metres of solar panels integrated into both her masts, which can generate 250 kilowatts of energy or another 20,000 litres of fuel saved in a year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242371/image/large-9cd96171448ad1389d1bd529012a7ece.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242371">“The addition of the vertical solar panels on the masts allows the Wing 100 to generate more energy without the need for a motor,” says Timmerman. “In total, the Wing 100 is calculated to save over 225,000 litres of fuel per year compared with similar sized, conventional engine-powered superyachts.“Sustainable or improbable?Although alternative energy technologies are evolving all the time, they are not always new. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman (Company)">Royal Huisman</a> built the world’s first truly hybrid sailing yacht in 2009, the ketch-rigged sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ethereal58.04m (190'5&quot;)Royal Huisman2009">Ethereal</a>, noted for her pioneering hybrid propulsion system and 500kWh of stored energy in a Li-ion battery bank. From that moment on, energy efficiency and hybrid propulsion have been at the forefront of the shipyard’s R&amp;D.&nbsp;Moreover, solar cells have already been integrated into wing masts, although on a smaller scale. The 24-metre polar expedition sailing yacht NanuQ launched in 2019 by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1387" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="K&M Yachtbuilders BV (Company)">KM Yachtbuilders</a> to a design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/230" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dykstra Naval Architects (Company)">Dykstra Naval Architects</a>, has two free-standing, rotating wings masts by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hall Spars (Company)">Hall Spars</a> with a soft sail combination. Each wing mast is covered with 20 solar panels per side for a total of 40 square metres of panels. The main sails are handled by closed-front OceanFurl booms with hydraulic furling motors and can be reefed at virtually any angle of sail.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242366/image/large-21da919b9614db9c981de7a25db653f4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242366">Like NanuQ, the Wing 100 concept is designed to be built in full aluminium rather than steel to benefit from the lighter weight with no significant loss in structural stiffness. Less weight combined with the hull’s shallow-draft canoe body means less hydrodynamic resistance.&nbsp;“Typically for a 100-metre yacht to go upwind you would want a deep, high-aspect ratio keel, but the draft may be limited to five or six metres for practical reasons,” says Wassen. But because the Wing 100 is so big, a deep keel is not needed for stability, but is required for the side-force production. So a centreboard is one possible option to increase sailing performance”.The raised foredeck allows the structural beam to be full-height and increase the structural stiffness, while the free-standing rig reduces both local and global loads on the structure. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242369/image/large-d8fe4333939d0dc6a95feb885fd3773d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242369">“If you have a ketch or a sloop, for example, a rig of this size induces massive rigging loads and mast compression, increasing the longitudinal bending moments on the vessel,” explains Wassen. “But with a free-standing mast you don’t have this issue. The demand for very large sailing yachts is nothing like that for large motor yachts, but over the last few years there has been increased interest in very large sailing yachts. It does, of course, present some interesting challenges, but Rondal has built its reputation on resolving challenges.&nbsp;Rob Doyle: For a 100-metre sloop in terms of length overall, no, it is not possible. For a 100-metre spar height, yes, that is possible. If someone says ’yes’ to a 100-metre LOA yacht they are out of their depth and have not fully researched all the options involved. At RDD we have done a huge amount of research on this question and we are one of the few naval architects and design studios that have an understanding of the complexibility of such a big rig. Class approval would be difficult, but they will lean hard on the naval architect’s calculations, research and experience.&nbsp;Thys Nikkels: When we are pushing boundaries with any aspect of a design the answer is always ‘Do your homework!’ If you do not have experience with a certain size or configuration you have to do the necessary research and development to prove the design is feasible. Feasible in concept, safe in construction and safe in operation, only then can you tell a client that it is possible, and to do that you have to work with a team of researchers, material specialists, builders to find the required solutions for the challenges.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/108433/image/large-6f7ee4bb350c7e7604865e0774d55463.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/108433">Are there any suppliers who would take the risk of building such a yacht?Bart van der Meer: We have already built three impressive 70-metre-plus &nbsp;rigs and are currently planning a large rig for an 85-metre sloop, which will become one of the world’s largest.Rob Doyle: There are two really only two manufacturers that can build big rigs. Rigging would be another significant difficulty, along with winches, systems, furling, hull structures, regulations and more.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271932/image/large-fe57b0ec686c9fcbbe3f0f91922d0a1d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271932">Even if you could build it, would it be safe to operate for the crew?Bart van der Meer: Given the exceptional loads, risk factors for the crew are already an important factor in planning sailing systems for today’s largest sailing yachts, especially when racing. These loads and the sheer length and weight of running rigging do increase exponentially when looking at a rig for a 100-metre sloop. But we should keep in mind that, at this end of the superyacht fleet, only the most highly qualified and experienced crew would manage and trim the sail plan. They would do so with access to very sophisticated load sensors and safety triggers to ensure loads and risks remain within the design boundaries. There is also the possibility that these big rigs could be operated fully automatically. Especially as the cost related to fully automating a sailing system becomes smaller in comparison to the overall cost. However, this route could present new challenges of its own until fully proven.Rob Doyle: We will always design rigs with safe operation in mind, the numbers involved are huge and operation of a sail plan of this size would be very difficult, if not impossible. The size of the systems to control such a rig are significant and very detailed research is required, the sparmakers can build very big rigs – the limit is the yacht not the spar tube.&nbsp;Thys Nikkels: In the end, a large sloop will only work for the client if it can be safely and relatively easily operated by the crew. Otherwise the rig will never, or only sporadically, be used.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236181/image/large-38e23873797382eff5e629953f24cb77.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236181">Have you had any requests for such a large project and do you expect that one day a client will decide to build one?Rudy Jurg: We have already been introduced to enquiries and concepts of this size that for one reason or another have yet to progress. I have little doubt that 100-metre-plus rigs will be built in the future. The first one will be commissioned by a very ambitious and visionary individual with deep pockets. Once this client’s project is afloat, others are more likely to follow.&nbsp;Rob Doyle: Yes, we have had requests for such yachts a number of times. What we explain first is that the jump from 78-metre M5 to a sloop with a spar length of 100 metres is enormous. If you have not designed and built big rigs before, then a client is very exposed. At RDD we have designed more big rigs, both sloop and ketches, than many other naval architects, but the numbers are staggering when you present the research and the real build numbers. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272049/image/large-6060ad9c10f61da7535208d03e662ce4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272049">What are the cost implications of building a 100-metre sloop compared with a schooner of similar size?&nbsp;Bart van der Meer: One of the biggest cost implications is that most of the hardware needs to be designed from scratch for the sloop. Nothing on this scale is readily available on the market: no furlers, no toggles, no winches. And it needs to be designed not just bigger, but exponentially bigger. Take a runner winch, for example. From a 30-metre sloop to a 60-metre sloop, the retrieving length will double and the pull force goes from roughly 10 to 30 tonnes. If you want to be able to retrieve the runners at the same time, you’ll need four times more winch power to double the speed and more than double the force.&nbsp;When you recall it was considered doubtful if you could fly a spinnaker from the mast of a 100-foot sloop 30 years ago, we can see that the evolution of marine design technology has always innovated to address such issues. The expertise is there to make the rig of a 100-metre sloop happen, &nbsp;as long as it is accepted that substantial system development costs as well as the hardware manufacturing costs will bear heavily on the first project. For these reasons, it will certainly cost more than the rig of a 100-metre schooner or ketch.Rob Doyle: Hard questions because if you want to be the tip of the sword, a visionary owner that wants to reach for the stars and build the biggest sloop. But you may need to ask yourself: is the ketch a better option at the 100-metre LOA size?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236173/image/large-d089b6d8c8cd89662da7e3fc43a4f62c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236173">Given all the factors above and from your own experience, what is the ideal size for a super-sloop?Rudy Jurg: It is difficult to say there is an ideal size, though we do know that the ‘ideal’ size keeps on growing as larger yachts prove their reliability and their capacity to deliver exceptional lifestyle experiences and amenities to owners and their guests. Ultimately the ‘ideal’ will always be related to owners’ plans, their financial resources, their vision and ambition.Rob Doyle: I believe an 85-metre LOA sloop would be the limit, but there are different factors at play that have to be understood and it's more about the length/beam ratio than LOA, which would be a more suitable metric to start with.
