The guide has been written by and for crew and has received contributions from industry experts.The Environmental Crew Guidelines were initiated by MB92 and are a collaborative effort between creator Danella Hopkins, formerly of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a>, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>. The onboarding guidelines emphasise ways in which crew can cultivate an environmental mindset and commit to improved operational practices. While the departmental guidelines delve deeper, addressing the unique needs and individual responsibilities of each department.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301012/image/large-b45f176aee834245e35b785c2e91c60f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301012">“We understand that environmental sustainability can be challenging to accomplish onboard and there is no one-size-fits-all approach,” stated Executive Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>, Robert van Tol. “By working together with the crew, we hope to inspire and facilitate this powerful group to minimise their yacht’s daily footprint where possible.”To ensure proper enforcement onboard, the guidelines introduce the nomination of an "Eco-Sustainability Ambassador" (ESA). This dedicated crew member will collaborate with Heads of Departments (HODs) to streamline processes and drive the implementation of initiatives by supporting crew, monitoring progress, and reporting achievements. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301010/image/large-b193c8542b4cf1035a696daff808e798.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301010">“There are immediate actions that crew can take on board to introduce more environmentally-friendly practices, which can significantly reduce emissions (by up to 30 percent), whether by optimising temperature settings, making slight adjustments to cruising speeds or employing effective resource management,” said <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92</a>.&nbsp;The guidelines are now available to read on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a> website, with companies that join the initiative now receiving a Supporter Stamp to signify commitment. Puerto Rico’s government signed a multi-million dollar contract last week with a Texas-based company to build a new marina.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294006/image/large-d7c07a95ce0b063baa49fb7bd7815cef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294006">According to the Associated Press, the deal was made on Thursday 16 November, with Governor Pedro Pierluisi expecting the marina to generate more than $10 million a year in economic activity.There are currently two docks in San Juan available to superyachts, but there is limited space and basic services are not offered. According to Pedro Pierluisi, the new marina will be built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7074" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Safe Harbor Marinas (Company)">Safe Harbor Marinas</a>, who will be investing between $12 million and $15 million in the project. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/284668/image/large-fbd5e7a3-1c7f-43da-8182-8c6852a5960e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/284668">The new marina will span more than 54,000 square-metres and be able to accommodate roughly six yachts at a time, explained Pedro Pierluisi. It will also offer shore power and water connections, including sanitary pumping and high-speed internet.According to officials, the 40-year concession lease agreement calls for Puerto Rico’s Port Authority to receive $200,000 a year in rental fees. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7074" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Safe Harbor Marinas (Company)">Safe Harbor Marinas</a> will also share five percent of its gross income with the authority and five percent of net profits from fuel sales.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294005/image/large-553e7d121f27d30dadd85adfde69d6f3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294005">Officials stated that nearly 30 yachts visit Puerto Rico a year, with the project expected to attract up to 200 a year. The deal also envisions construction of a business centre, repair and recreational facilities, retail outlets and a boat supply store.The first phase of the project is expected to be in operation by the end of 2024 and the second phase by the end of 2025.
