Online news publication T24 has reported that a fire broke out on 10 February at a yacht production shipyard operating in Antalya Free Zone, Turkey. According to T24, the shipyard was partially damaged, alongside four yachts in the fire, with the shipyard closing around 18:30 and a fire report sent 45 minutes later.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301510/image/large-9fa62a1bb9718560e643527a036af910.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301510">The flames were seen near <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U4 Marine & Interiors (Company)">U4 Marine &amp; Interiors</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4229" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Naval Yachts (Company)">Naval Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp Yachts</a>, with reports that they were stopped from spreading to surrounding factories. However, it is believed that one of the yachts destroyed measured over 30 metres.The fire brigade, police and AFAD (the ministry of Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) were in attendance, with around 15 fire trucks supplied by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Fire Department and six Social Incident Response Vehicles (TOMA) from the Provincial Police Department.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301506/image/large-79be48a373cc5dd1c4fcd9cecaf292f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301506">“We immediately intervened and took the fire under control, which broke out in the evening at the yacht manufacturing facility in the Free Zone,” explained Muhittin Böcek, the Mayor of Antalya.An investigation was carried out by the Provincial Police Chief Orhan Çevik, with factory employees and Free Zone managers also evacuated from the site. &nbsp;In a statement to local journalists, Chief Orhan Çevik said, “Thank God, we have no casualties or injuries."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301508/image/large-37b50ff5e582188b079c0388afd11fa7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301508">“We tried to take the fire under control by dispatching our fire brigade and police teams. Cana Gökhan and Fatih Sürekli, partners in life and co-founders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a>, are aboard 28-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11048" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Waterlily28.45m (93'4&quot;)Mazu Yachts2023">Waterlily</a>, the first in the new steel-hulled series of pocket superyachts they designed for boutique builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>. The yacht made her debut at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2023">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> and our conversation has turned to the perception of Turkish yacht designers and their status in the industry.&nbsp;“It can be a disadvantage in this business if you’re not from the UK, Italy or Holland,” says Cana. “Even when we propose something better, the top yards will usually pick Italians or British designers, which is one reason why we set up a London office and moved there. But what hurts most is that the big Turkish players are the same. They have their comfort zone and want to work with overseas designers because that is how they sell boats, so why try something new?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296392/image/large-9364cd32a6ef49c0f5ec76faa2df081d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296392">She has a point. There is no intrinsic reason why the British, Italians or Dutch should make better designers. You could argue that the large yacht industry in Europe is older and more established, but Turkey now ranks third in the world after Italy and the Netherlands. Moreover, when you consider that Noah’s Ark may well have been built by Turkish shipwrights you realise that boat building is something they’ve been doing successfully for a very long time.“Attitudes are starting to change,” says Fatih. “There is a new generation of managers looking to beat their own path. They’re young, tech-savvy and much more willing to invest in home-grown talent.”&nbsp;One name that pops up is Emre Sandan, a contemporary of Cana and Fatih who shares a similar background. Cana graduated in architecture from Yıldız Technical University and worked for the Ulutas outfitting company before moving to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/706" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scaro Design (Company)">Scaro Design</a> in Istanbul where she was lead interior designer for the now defunct <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/705" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Peri Yachts (Company)">Peri Yachts</a> brand and its highly regarded motoryacht series. The raised pilothouse is positioned well forward to maximise the interior volumes and aft deck space, the vertical bow adds visual impact and increases the waterline length, and the two-tone paintwork introduces a striking new aesthetic. Not only is it <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s first displacement model, it is also the first steel-hulled yacht to be equipped with triple <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo Penta</a> IPS propulsion.“The edgy proportions and exterior lines of the DS series are inspired by the design DNA of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mazu Yachts (Company)">Mazu</a>’s fast runabouts,” says Fatih. “The idea was to create something new and different with huge windows, generous interior volumes and big exterior spaces. The couple made a conscious effort to avoid using rare materials and are firm believers in the ‘less is more’ school of thought summed up in Coco Chanel’s famous advice about fashion accessories: “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”“We don’t like palatial or extravagant interiors,” says Cana, a keen sailor who recently completed an RYA Competent Crew Course in Southampton. “It’s a question of taste, of course, but if we don’t feel it we don’t do it. Luxury is not about stuffing boats full of rare and expensive materials; it’s more about taking away. Simplicity is better than embellishment. Just being out at sea with friends and family is a luxury in itself. The experience is what’s important and we’re already talking with clients about reducing the quantity of interior materials on board.”&nbsp;As nominal head of design at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a> (they avoid formal titles) Cana jokes she is the brains behind the operation, but it is clear they relish being able to work together on both the interior and exterior design of projects along with their 10-person strong team in London and Istanbul.&nbsp;“I don’t like when there is a mismatch between the interior and exterior styling,” says Fatih. “It can sometimes be a surprise, but usually the effect is jarring. Younger owners generally prefer open-plan spaces, outdoor living, unique experiences, holistic design and understated luxury. Cana and Fatih have locked on to these styling cues to imbue their projects with a contemporary vigour that is compelling and exciting.&nbsp;"There are so many boats out there that look the same," says Cana. “We like doing things differently and we don’t want to feel like we’re just designing another boat. We’ve been lucky so far that the yards we’ve worked with have all been bold and brave and also want to make an impact. The motor yacht displays a spacious layout, with a full-beam owner’s suite situated on the lower deck aft, featuring walk-in-wardrobes and an opulent ensuite. The remaining accommodation includes a twin guest stateroom to port, a starboard guest stateroom and a full-beam VIP suite. Emre Sandan, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp Yachts</a>’ Shipyard Manager, reported to SuperYacht Times that production of the first hull is “70% complete”, with the second hull “58% complete", and both are expected to be delivered later this year. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp Yachts</a> has revealed the XSR 85 Plus, the latest addition to its XSR yacht series, at this year’s <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2019">Cannes Yachting Festival</a>. The model’s first two hulls, which are under construction, are set to be completed in early 2020.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/97329/image/large-177f9c2eac128e28f014d0d6ad52a0ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/97329">XSR 85 Plus, which offers both a conventional and a parallel hybrid propulsion system, has naval architecture by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/460" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Oossanen Naval Architects (Company)">Van Oossanen Naval Architects</a>, while the exterior and interior design of the yacht was devised by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4720" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Yacht Design (Company)">Red Yacht Design</a>.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/97328/image/large-87fb4d8e990a91adc793793d80782951.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/97328">This 26-metre yacht was designed to integrate interior and exterior spaces. As a result, lightness and visibility give the vessel a unique open deck feeling, and the yacht embodies comfort, silence and style.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/97327/image/large-069f52d67e1ebe4f6c798e3859de0a05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/97327">Eight to 10 guests can be accommodated on board. The XSR 85 Plus’ owner’s suite is located forward of the main deck, with a private terrace and a balcony on the port side. The lower deck has four guest staterooms made up of two double staterooms and two twin staterooms. There are also two VIP suites on the lower deck. Four crew members can also be housed onboard.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/97326/image/large-a2b4634f3b145d84843ae45bc911d109.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/97326">XSR 85 Plus has 135 square metres of open space and a vast lounge area at the aft with sunbeds and a relaxing lounge. The sundeck lounge area offers privacy but can be used as a party lounge as well. The vessel also features a Jacuzzi surrounded by large sunbeds and includes an outdoor dining area capable of seating 12.This new model from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sarp Yachts (Company)">Sarp</a> is powered by two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> i6-800 engines which allow the XSR 85 Plus to reach speeds of up to 20 knots, and have a range of 1,000 nautical miles while cruising at 12 knots.
