The launch date of the Selene 92 superyacht is fast approaching, with the Jet Marine Shipyard in Zuhai, China now making final preparations for her to safely enter the water within the coming weeks. She is the first addition to Selene Yacht’s new Ocean Explorer range.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155819/image/large-00d4cdae494775b589a790fd77d757b9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155819">Developed together with Guido de Groot Design, Howard Chen, founder of Selene Yachts combined the sea-keeping capabilities of a traditional displacement yacht hull with contemporary styling and modern construction techniques. Some of the key priorities when creating the project was to design a yacht that would be able to comfortably take on long ocean passages, while offering guests with a safe and luxurious environment.By Charl van Rooy

Selene Yachts preparing for launch of 92’ superyacht

A memorable milestone was reached last week at Selene Yachts’ facilities as the deck was fitted on the new Selene 92 Ocean Explorer. This means that the hull is now complete and construction on other elements can proceed at full speed.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/147005/image/large-257521a9842f40fea731aa1696b2a6ce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/147005">The interior and exterior of the new boat come from the drawing table of the renowned designer Guido de Groot, and will be both modern and luxurious. The large salon will appear even more spacious thanks to the large windows in the superstructure, which will let in extraordinary amounts of light while also affording great views.The wheelhouse will be well thought-through and ergonomic, and will comprise remote controls for all systems. Full speed ahead on Selene 92 Ocean Explorer

Jet-Tern Marine, the Chinese partner of Guido de Groot Design in the Netherlands, started engineering work on the new Selene 78 Ocean Explorer several months ago. The partnership has already produced the mould for the first yacht. This represents a landmark moment as the yacht is the first Selene 78 from Selene Yachts’ Ocean Explorer line. In addition to the Selene 78, Jet-Tern Marine is also currently building a Selene 92 Ocean Explorer.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/146332/image/large-ace5487f8bc93cabcf06da0bd0100023.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/146332" class="legacy">The new Selene 78 is being built for a North American customer and is slated for delivery in the summer of 2015. Her extensive range and stylish interior make this trawler yacht ideal for long voyages in luxury and comfort. The first Selene 78 Ocean Explorer has a length of almost 24 metres and a beam of 6.50 metres. Her volume is greater than many yachts of a similar length thanks to the round bilge and deep hull form and her cruiser stern. These features are also responsible for the yacht’s excellent seagoing sailing properties and relatively low fuel consumption.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/140867/image/large-f844bc0459a65baa02f46bb65ebcd413.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140867" class="legacy">This exceptional volume also ensures plenty of living and sleeping space on board. Construction is under way on a new Selene 92 designed by Guido de Groot. The Selene 92 employs a traditional displacement yacht hull but with contemporary exterior styling and modern construction techniques. But a contemporary twist is also apparent in the addition of the large side windows in the hull and stainless steel anchor pockets. Construction under way on a new Selene 92

Selene Trawler Yachts are built by Jet-Tern Marine Group, established in 1998 by Howard Chen of Taiwan, who remains the owner today. Jet-Tern Marine has production facilities in Zhuhai and Dongguan in China. The yard has built more than 400 robust trawler yachts for proud owners all over the world. In collaboration with Guido de Groot design, Jet-Tern Marine developed a new line of Ocean Explorers, namely the Selene 78, 92 and 128 Ocean Explorer.The Selene 78 and 92 are currently being developed and will be introduced in 2014. Despite the economic downturn, Jet-Tern Marine is thriving. The yard delivered 24 boats in sizes from 40 to 82 feet (12 to 25 metres) in 2012, and will deliver more in 2013. It also currently has an 82-foot (25-metre) Catamaran sailboat designed by Greg Young, a Selene 78, a Selene 92 and a Selene 128 (designed by Guido de Groot and Howard Chen) under construction and slated for delivery in 2013 or 2014.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/144794/image/large-536482cf231135faf76d40d891d45e44.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/136296">“Selene Ocean Trawlers have a full displacement hull that ensures comfortable and elegant long-range cruising,” says Chen. “Over 400 have been built for the international market since 1998, with the most popular being the Selene 54, 58 &amp; 60.” Chen is clear about how Selene yachts stand out from the competition. “Selene Ocean Trawlers are long-range trawlers in a very elegant style. However, there is still much room for improvement in terms of yacht management standards and regulations. More and more Chinese people enjoy the sea now, especially in the city of Sanya on Hainan, a tropical island in southern China, which is increasingly positioning itself as an international tourist destination. Organised every year in April, the Hainan Rendezvous is China’s largest boat show".“While China is still lacking in yachting infrastructure, this is swiftly being remedied, with many marinas under construction in various provinces. The government supports and encourages the yachting sector, which has been dubbed a ‘Rising Sun Industry’. Many of our key components and materials, such as engines, gensets, foam core, fibreglass and navigation equipment, are imported from overseas or from Taiwan. The supply chain is essential to production and quality, so any delays have an adverse effect on efficiency.
