After news of her planned demolition was announced in 2018, the 49.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sensation Yachts (Company)">Sensation Yachts</a> superyacht Sensation SY32&nbsp;has reappeared in New Zealand. According to reports, the yacht is due to leave Australia on 15th January onboard the Yacht Express dock vessel.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252995/image/large-88d8c3bd7eed3bc141bd13e321e98745.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252995"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/47972" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Up for grabs: 50m Sensation superyacht project to be scrapped in March (2018-01-04 09:35:00 +0100)">In January 2018 SuperYacht Times reported</a> that the New Zealand demolition company Ward Demolition Limited had been tasked with the deconstruction of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sensation Yachts (Company)">Sensation Yachts</a> shipyard and the superyacht if she had not been sold by March of that year. At the time the yacht was offered in two parts, with the hull and superstructure not yet joined. The vessel had been in that state since the mid-2000s when she was seized following financial difficulties involving the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sensation Yachts (Company)">Sensations Yachts</a> shipyard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20011/image/large-42465eb55ae38346f189964c4d051d91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20011"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20013/image/large-ab89556b0d7dd6c5bd8f091c947d1d05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20013">New imagery shared on the Superyachts in Auckland Facebook page, however, show us that construction of the yacht has since been continued, with the hull and superstructure now joined. The Facebook page and its readers have reported that work was undertaken at an old <a href="https://sya.superyachttimes.com/companies/alloy" target="_blank">Alloy Yachts</a> shed in Henderson, Auckland by a company which is called New Zealand Yachts according to some readers of the page. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/252994/image/large-68aa41ee84ceabff6afa0c699eaabf52.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/252994">The yacht’s reappearance confirms earlier rumours that she was resold for completion in late 2018/early 2019. According to the Facebook page, her new owner is Australian and this is also where the yacht is heading next, so she may be completed over there. Spanish broadcasters have shared the news that Taras Ostapchuk, chief engineer aboard the superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/958" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lady Anastasia47.73m (156'7&quot;)Sensation Yachts2001">Lady Anastasia</a>, attempted to sink the 47.73-metre superyacht, valued at approximately €6.5m, in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1563" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Adriano (Company)">Port Adriano</a>, Spain, which is believed to belong to a Russian arms dealer.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/46665/image/large-d2b466341e02a709b90522790e4e513c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/46665">Taras Ostapchuk opened a major valve in the engine room and a second, smaller one within the crew quarters. He then closed the fuel valves, turned off all the electricity and told the crew to abandon ship. Delivering yachts from 40 to 77 metres in length to an international roster of clients from the USA, UK, Europe and Russia, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise Yachts</a> has international recognition as an industry heavyweight. But what is the history of the Turkish yard? Here, we take a look at its predecessor and unravel the brilliance of the builder's backstory. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/171184/image/large-3ee1a3a45f9aa5b5ba81c9313ca0d2ae.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/171184">The company’s success today has its roots in two companies involved in yacht building: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan Yachts Inc</a>., based in Tuzla, Istanbul and Turquoise Yacht Construction, also based in Istanbul. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> was the shortened version of the company’s full name – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Profilo Teknik Sanayi A.S</a>. These two companies joined forces in 1994 to establish Proteksan-Turquoise Yachts and focused on the construction of large motor yachts to a high standard. In 2014, MB Holding, which was founded in 1982 by Omani businessman Mohammed Al Barwani, became the majority shareholder and the company was renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise Yachts</a>, with the head office and shipyard based at Pendik, Istanbul.&nbsp;Turning now to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan Yachts</a>, the company commenced building large (for the time) motor yachts in the mid-1970s. In those days, most Turkish-built yachts were wooden gulets built for the charter market in Turkey and Greece.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/172234/image/large-b587da465505431c40b4fa92f00c5cb0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/172234"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> was the first Turkish yard to build in steel, with its first yacht delivered in 1977 following fitting out by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Picchiotti (Company)">Picchiotti</a> at Viareggio. This yacht, the 32-metre Motivator, was sold to a Middle Eastern owner and renamed Dina A. In 1987, the yacht was sold to a costume jewellery manufacturer and was based in Bangkok until 1992. The yacht, now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nomad32.0m (104'12&quot;)Proteksan1977">Nomad</a>, has been home-ported in Tunisia in recent years after her sale by auction in 1998.&nbsp;The next yacht completed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> in 1977 was the 24-metre Kerim which was designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4575" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Paolo Caliari Design (Company)">Paolo Caliari</a> and would later become Boggy C and be painted in battleship grey. The later history of this vessel is unknown at present. Also completed in the same year was the 28.5-metre Milasan, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4575" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Paolo Caliari Design (Company)">Paolo Caliari&nbsp;</a>and also fitted out in Italy. The yacht was sold to a Middle Eastern buyer following its completion.&nbsp;1983 saw the completion of the 24.4-metre Alize followed a year later by the 41-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/525" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Texas44.6m (146'4&quot;)Proteksan1984">Texas</a>, the largest yacht built so far by the shipyard. This yacht would later be extended to 44.6 metres by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sensation Yachts (Company)">Sensation Yachts</a> in Auckland, New Zealand.Designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/904" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ugo Costaguta (Company)">Ugo Costaguta</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/858" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alberto Mercati (Company)">Alberto Mercati&nbsp;</a>with an interior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arthur M. Barbeito & Associates, Inc. (Company)">Arthur M. Barbieto</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/525" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Texas44.6m (146'4&quot;)Proteksan1984">Texas</a> spent a few years under the ownership of the Sultan of Selangor, Malaysia as Permaisuri before being acquired by an Australian owner and reverting to her original name.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158752/image/large-3b3e5b154d555a3623fd71d68fd8cd9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158752">At around the same time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> completed the 43.6-metre Galaxy Star for Rene Herzog, the Swiss entrepreneur whose Zurich-based company, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/903" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alucraft (Company)">Alucraft</a>, had been instrumental in the promotion and building of both this yacht and the aforementioned <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/525" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Texas44.6m (146'4&quot;)Proteksan1984">Texas</a>. Galaxy Star was equipped with a stern garage that would initially house a Rolls-Royce when in Europe and a Chrysler when stateside.Another, slightly smaller yacht which was completed in 1986 to a similar design (but without the stern garage) was the 38.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4278" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Big Change II38.13m (125'1&quot;)Proteksan1986">Big Change</a>. History: Proteksan and Turquoise Yachts on how they came to be

<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise Yachts</a>' success today has its roots in two companies involved in yacht building: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan Yachts Inc.</a>, based in Tuzla, Istanbul and Turquoise Yacht Construction, also based in Istanbul. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> was the shortened version of the company’s full name – Profilo Teknik Sanayi A.S.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/158752/image/large-3b3e5b154d555a3623fd71d68fd8cd9c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158752">These two companies joined forces in 1994 to establish Proteksan-Turquoise Yachts and focused on the construction of large motor yachts to a high standard. In 2014, MB Holding, which was founded in 1982 by Omani businessman Mohammed Al Barwani, became the majority shareholder and the company was renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise Yachts</a>, with the head office and shipyard based at Pendik, Istanbul.&nbsp;Turning now to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan Yachts</a>, the company commenced building large (for the time) motor yachts in the mid-1970s. In those days, most Turkish-built yachts were wooden gulets built for the charter market in Turkey and Greece.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> was the first Turkish yard to build in steel, with its first yacht delivered in 1977 following fitting out by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Picchiotti (Company)">Picchiotti</a> at Viareggio. This yacht, the 32-metre Motivator, was sold to a Middle Eastern owner and renamed Dina A.In 1987, the yacht was sold to a costume jewellery manufacturer and was based in Bangkok until 1992. The yacht, now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nomad32.0m (104'12&quot;)Proteksan1977">Nomad</a>, has been home-ported in Tunisia in recent years after her sale by auction in 1998.The next yacht completed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> in 1977 was the 24-metre Kerim which was also designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4575" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Paolo Caliari Design (Company)">Paolo Caliari</a> and would later become Boggy C and be painted in battleship grey. The later history of this vessel is unknown at present. Also completed in the same year was the 28.5-metre Milasan, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4575" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Paolo Caliari Design (Company)">Paolo Caliari</a> and also fitted out in Italy. The yacht was sold to a Middle Eastern buyer following its completion.&nbsp;1983 saw the completion of the 24.4-metre Alize followed a year later by the 41-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/525" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Texas44.6m (146'4&quot;)Proteksan1984">Texas</a>, the largest yacht built so far by the shipyard. This yacht would later be extended to 44.6 metres by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/496" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sensation Yachts (Company)">Sensation Yachts</a> in Auckland, New Zealand. Designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/904" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ugo Costaguta (Company)">Ugo Costaguta</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/858" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alberto Mercati (Company)">Alberto Mercati</a> with an interior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Arthur M. Barbeito & Associates, Inc. (Company)">Arthur M. Barbieto</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/525" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Texas44.6m (146'4&quot;)Proteksan1984">Texas</a> spent a few years under the ownership of the Sultan of Selangor, Malaysia as Permaisuri before being acquired by an Australian owner and reverting to her original name.At around the same time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5615" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Proteksan (Company)">Proteksan</a> completed the 43.6-metre Galaxy Star for Rene Herzog, the Swiss entrepreneur whose Zurich-based company, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/903" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alucraft (Company)">Alucraft</a>, had been instrumental in the promotion and building of both this yacht and the aforementioned <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/525" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Texas44.6m (146'4&quot;)Proteksan1984">Texas</a>. Galaxy Star was equipped with a stern garage that would initially house a Rolls-Royce when in Europe and a Chrysler when stateside.Another, slightly smaller yacht which was completed in 1986 to a similar design (but without the stern garage) was the 38.1-metre Big Change. An origin story: Proteksan and Turquoise Yachts

SYT’s in-house yacht historian Malcolm Wood takes a look at the predecessors of one of today’s leading Turkish superyacht builders, Turquoise Yachts.

The Kiwi demolition company, Ward Demolition Limited are to scrap the 49.5-metre Sensation Yachts project SY32 in March this year. The project remains for sale which consists of a completed hull and superstructure on which work seized the mid-2000s following financial turmoil that the company faced during the time.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/20011/image/large-42465eb55ae38346f189964c4d051d91.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20011">Along with the project, the entire former Sensation Yachts facility in west Auckland is also being dismantled and scrapped. The project is the last motor yacht that the New Zealand shipyard was working on before liquidation. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/20013/image/large-ab89556b0d7dd6c5bd8f091c947d1d05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20013">Now belonging to Ward Demolition, the company is hoping to find a buyer for the project before it goes under the knife in March this year when it will be scrapped.

Up for grabs: 50m Sensation superyacht project to be scrapped in March

Jan Jaap Minnema of Fraser Yachts has announced that his central agency listing, Sensation, has been sold with Bush and Noble representing the buyer. The deal has just been closed in Singapore and the yacht will soon leave to her new home in Dubai. The last asking price of Sensation was €9,900,000.

Sensation was built by Sensation Yachts in 2007 to an in-house design by the company, and was last seen on display at the Singapore Yacht Show in April this year. Built to ABS standards, the all-aluminium superyacht is powered by twin 3,000hp Caterpillar 3516B diesel engines which propel her to a top speed of 20 knots with cruising speed of 16 knots. Accommodation is provided for 10 guests in a master, two double and two twin cabins.

Fraser Yachts sells 50m superyacht Sensation

Launched this spring, Perini Navi’s new 38 metre sloop named Dahlak is one of designer Philippe Briand’s latest creations. Here the London-based designer comments on what drove the design process behind the yacht and how he managed to incorporate the owner’s special requests.

Briand looked to two of his sailing yacht projects completed in the past as a starting point for the design of Dahlak namely 38 metre sister ship P2 and Sensation Yacht’s legendary 44.7 metre Mari Cha III. "The first big racing yacht I was asked to design was Mari- Cha III,” says Briand. “She was the biggest carbon-hulled yacht to be built at that time and during the building process the family fell in love with the project and expressed their wish for her to also be a family yacht. Since then, Mari-Cha III has been the joy of all the owner’s family, for the grandparents, the children and the now-adult grandchildren. A yacht that wins the transatlantic race and at the same time still brings pleasure to the owner after 20 years is about as good as it gets. Dahlak follows a similar concept: fast when needed, yet always comfortable and welcoming for the guests, she is built to last.”

The features found on P2 which have made her such a successful regatta contender have been carried over to Perini’s latest sloop. Briand’s hull shape and plumb bow are identical to those of P2. These deliver a smooth and comfortable ride with a touch of sporty elegance. Dahlak has also been fitted with the same highly efficient lifting keel which offers the helmsman unlimited control during tight upwind and high speed maneuvers. The water ballast system on P2 has been replaced with an additional eight tons of weight in the keel bulb, managing to retain the stability P2 has become known for.

Dahlak’s hybrid carbon fibre mast is fitted with full composite standing rigging, which towers 51.5 metres above the water, and offers a sail plan surface area of over 1,870 sqm.
