(Company)">Baglietto</a>'s hybrid yachts. The propulsion system marks the next step in the shipyard’s commitment to environmentally-friendly technologies.Following extensive research and development, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/375" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baglietto S.p.A. (Company)">Baglietto</a> plans to install the hybrid propulsion system on T52 and DOM 133 yachts starting in 2025. In the traditional diesel and diesel shaft generation modes, her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> engines are compatible with the use of diesel fuels obtained from 100% renewable energy sources, such as HVO and e-diesel.The latter, coming from highly renewable energy sources, ensures a reduction of up to 90 percent of the CO2 emissions calculated over the entire life cycle of the product, from process start to its final use.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/306435/image/large-aaf204f0d71e20bc5ac7c4371648a406.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/306435">While in diesel electric mode, the combination of her conventional gensets and variable-speed diesel gensets allows her to cruise at speeds of up to nine knots, using biofuels. This system allows the yacht to travel in four different modes, including Full Electric mode. In their most recent financial unveiling, the Board of Directors of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, under the chairmanship of Massimo Perotti, gathered to review and approve the Periodic Financial Information as of September 30, 2023. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293397/image/large-a465a880baaefa108e734c7bf31217d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293397"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> exhibited strong financial performance in the first nine months, with Net Revenues of New Yachts totalling €626.0 million. Notably, the third quarter alone contributed €237.6 million, reflecting a significant 15.1 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022 when revenues were €544.1 million.Massimo Perotti highlighted: “The excellent results approved today by the Board of Directors are yet another confirmation of the strength of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> brand and of its peculiar high-end luxury maison business model, that makes our growth strategy sustainable even in challenging macroeconomic and geopolitical scenarios.”Within the Yacht Division, net revenues of new yachts amounted to €387.5 million, attributed to the success of asymmetrical models of the SL line and the SP line, both experiencing notably strong growth rates. The superyacht division achieved net revenues of new yachts of €171.6 million, marking a substantial 24 percent increase from the first nine months of 2022. This success was mainly from the successful Alloy line, the new X-Space, and the Steel line.&nbsp;Additionally, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a>’s results displayed net revenues of new yachts of €66.9 million, demonstrating a notable 28.3 percent surge compared to the same period in 2022. The positive performance was bolstered by a significant favourable mix effect and the successful launch of the BGM75.Geographically, the European market showed expansion, surging by 40.6 percent, alongside a remarkable 129.7 percent growth in the Middle-East. However, the Americas have experienced a slowdown, influenced by the level of interest rates, while the APAC region also faced challenges.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250520/image/large-0a3fbeca280e8c3933c53ff570e0aa4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250520">Moreover, in the first nine months of 2023, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> reported an order intake amounting to €604.5 million, with €253.0 million attributed to the third quarter, compared to €248.5 million during the same period in 2022. This figure represents a natural normalisation in comparison to the €735.6 million recorded as of September 30, 2022.&nbsp;Several factors contribute to this adjustment, including a return to the historical growth trend, extended waiting times for yacht deliveries due to a high backlog, and a slowdown in demand from the Americas, influenced by the heightened uncertainty in the current macroeconomic scenario and elevated interest rates, factors typically more impactful on the US clientele.The boat shows held in September showcased positive outcomes, drawing significant attendance from predominantly European customers. The introduction of the new SX100 of the yacht division and the multi-hull BGM75 of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2023">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> received acclaim, leading to successful commercial negotiations and ongoing discussions.&nbsp;The gross backlog for the current year stands at €819.2 million, providing substantial coverage for anticipated 2023 revenues. Future revenue visibility remains high, with orders totalling €854.9 million, supported by extended delivery dates, including sold deliveries up to 2026 for the Yacht Division, 2027 for the superyacht division, and 2025 for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a>, reflecting a noteworthy timeframe within its market segment.Commenting on the future Massimo Perotti affirmed that highlighted: “We approach the next years with optimism, strong of a high-quality backlog at record highs, 91 percent sold to final clients. Revenues for 2023 are already substantially covered and the visibility over the coming years gives us peace of mind.We keep moving forward at a fast pace in the execution of our "Road to 2030" by implementing avant-garde green techs within the yachting industry. In a press conference hosted in the Blue Innovation Dock at <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="boot Düsseldorf - 2023">boot Düsseldorf 2023</a> yesterday, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>'s CEO Massimo Perotti announced that the shipyard will be aiming to launch a net zero superyacht in Spring/Summer of 2027. The announcement was made within a broader discussion on the shipyard's current sustainability and technology initiatives, which include the construction of a 50-metre superyacht with fuel cell technology for powering hotel mode, due for launch in 2025. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255103/image/large-73d0ad874359aa891fa8bd77b79d78e6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255103"></a>2025: 50Steel with fuel cell technology for hotel modeWhile the work is progressing on the testing and construction of the reformer/fuel cell modules that will be installed on the 50 Steel, Perotti made it clear during the conference that this first yacht is one step in the direction toward net zero.&nbsp;2026: Fuel cell technology for hotel mode, combined with hybrid powerWorking closely with its partners, and in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd's Register</a>, the shipyard will be working on the development of a carbon-neutral power generation system, with a substantial increase in the power developed by the reformer/fuel cell modules.This will make low-speed, wide-range navigation possible in carbon neutral conditions through a hybrid propulsion system, overcoming the current limitations of systems, which in zero emission mode (main engines and generators off) can only rely on the modest energy capacity of the batteries. This second step will also require a technological leap in the yacht's structure and plant configuration. In 2026, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> plans to launch a yacht that has combined fuel cell technology (for the hotel mode) and hybrid for use when underway.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/210712/image/large-9904e4ffdd6db13b7969d3a6e510dff3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/210712">2027: Net-zero superyachtThe ultimate goal for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> includes an even more ambitious third step: the design and construction of a superyacht powered solely by green methanol. The generation of the power needed to sail at maximum speed will therefore no longer be tied to diesel engines, but rather will be based on a combination of fuel cells and internal combustion engines powered by green methanol. The goal will be for this project to be launched in 2027, but they have not mentioned any further information about the vessel at this time.Echoing a sentiment first discussed in 2022, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> also noted that it is currently in discussion with the IMO regulatory board in regards to the regulatory restrictions on the maximum GT of superyachts, specifically those below the 499 GT limit. The shipyard is arguing that in order for shipyards to make alternative power sources more appealing to superyacht owners, IMO should discount from the overall GT the additional space needed for fuel cell technology. Historically the rate of penetration in the yachting industry to the world’s high net worth individuals has sat at around 3 percent. This percentage has certainly increased to around 4 percent since the middle of 2020 and that has been powered by the Coronavirus pandemic, which has increased individual value in time spent alone and with family.&nbsp;But what about the future? Today many shipyards – <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> included – have impressive backlogs right up until 2025 and beyond, and this demonstrates a confidence in our industry that I do not believe will decrease dramatically. This has been a period of solid growth. For the rate of penetration to have increased to 4 percent is dramatic, 0.5 percent shy of a 50 percent increase and this is a radical change spurred on by the increased desire for privacy and human interaction which our industry offers.&nbsp;In 2021 there were 820 yachts under construction, in 2022 the predictions are that there will be 1,024 yachts under construction – this speaks of a solid market and we have a great opportunity. But we have to sit back and consider how this market is working. There are two main players in this industry, the owner and the builder and the rest of the industry should be considered as stakeholders. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233966/image/large-3ea585eb80fd3ce4af6fd7cc06be5678.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233966">Where do you see the yachting industry when it comes to its contribution toward sustainability?I believe that the current focus on diesel-electric is not the future of our industry. The future of yachting is fuel cells, the production of electricity through the kinetic composition of hydrogen, with the residual product of the engine being H2O, which returns to the ocean. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> signed a contract with Siemens one year ago to develop the first 50-metre yacht with fuel cell electricity production.&nbsp;While hydrogen fuel cells are being developed by a number of shipyards, at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> we feel that for our yachts hydrogen is too volatile a material to carry, so we have developed a modular form using methanol which has no risk. Using the methanol we produce the amount of hydrogen onboard, needed to power the fuel cell, rather than storing hydrogen onboard the yacht.&nbsp;The biggest issue we face with alternative fuels is space. On our 50 metre yacht, 15 square-metres is taken up for the fuel cell, hydrogen production and storage, which therefore encroaches on the master suite. The 36.5-metre motor yacht, christened <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9059" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Goga36.9m (121'1&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Goga</a>, embodies the new Voyager series and reflects the style and needs of the modern owner. This allows the B.Yond 37M yacht to enter protected marine areas, or those normally off-limits to motor yachts. The lithium battery pack also makes it possible to stay at anchor in Hotel Mode with ‘zero emissions’, keeping the generators switched off and running the main on-board utilities from the batteries. With the new generation of high energy density batteries, the 300 kW/h pack will provide up to 8 hours of autonomy at anchor during the day and 12 hours at night. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> have unveiled two new sustainable models for 2022 with the 28-metre SD90/s and the 33-metre SP110. The semi-displacement SD90/s shuttle and the open coupé SP110 will be revealed at the September boat shows, with research put into lowering their environmental impact.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228910/image/large-945e5e7f4dbd650f8b98c4041f65331c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228910">The SD90/s was developed thanks to an exclusive partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1981" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Siemens (Company)">Siemens Energy</a> on methanol fuel cells to make yachts more environmentally friendly. The SD90/s is the third model in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo’s</a> popular semi displacement series that began with the SD96 and SD118. With two and a half decks, the SD90/s features an open flybridge and is configured with a lower deck and main deck. The bow area of the main deck is conceived as a partial full beam and characterises the volume of the owner's stateroom in an unusual way, providing a more spacious area inside compared to a traditional layout.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228921/image/large-f96057b6ea6a9cba52c836b3bbae2b12.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228921">The bow area can be adapted to meet the needs of the owner with two different configurations. The first version allows for a sunbathing area distributed across two decks while the second consists of tables, two sofas and a raised sunbathing area. The layout of the saloon on the main deck makes it possible to have both a lounge and dining area, solutions typically found on larger yachts, thanks to the use of tables that can be transformed in height and comfortable sofas.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228926/image/large-a28ee278d82885b6f2e99fab63c66150.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228926">The materials used onboard have also been greatly considered, with lots of raw materials and alternative sources used. The wood panelling has been clad in cannulated Paper Factor and the sustainable terrazzo used in the bathrooms has been selected to ensure a lower environmental impact. The SD90/s aims to offer high performance by optimising the power generated by her lithium batteries when sailing. Thanks to a fractional propulsion system, the boat is able to move around using just one engine, a pair, or all three; thus allowing great flexibility, low consumption and different autonomy depending on the desired speed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/228908/image/large-0cd7367ede8c2cebca9bf516c459e3bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/228908">The hull of the SP110 has been optimised for use with hydro jet propulsion. &nbsp;This type of propulsion is an advantage over propeller propulsion because it is less sensitive to variations in the boat's weight and therefore more versatile. To further optimise consumption and performance lighter materials such as laminated glass have been used for the larger surfaces. On the upper deck, the large sundeck deck is complemented by the wheelhouse overlooking the bow. The lowered deck allows the lower deck to be enjoyed from a view of the living area aft and the sea, while outside, from the deck aft, there is visual access to the lower lounge on the main deck. This new design projects the shipyard into the future and completely moves away from conventional models in the same market segment. As well as this it sets a new benchmark for the models that will follow.
