For any passionate sailor worth his salt, sailing aboard a classic J-Class yacht would be the pinnacle of their maritime career. For some however, life aboard the mythic J’s is not just a dream, but an everyday reality, and at times, an adrenaline overload. One of those rare few, is the Suffolk born Englishman, Will Gibbon, who has had the fortune to sail, cruise and live aboard not one, but two of these extraordinary vessels. Will is now in his fourth year as First Mate aboard the original 1933 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/192" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> J-Class, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1933">Velsheda</a>, but he began his career in the Class aboard the 41.55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/792" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Danish Yachts (Company)">Danish Yachts</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ranger41.55m (136'4&quot;)Danish Yachts2003">Ranger</a>, a Spirit of Tradition J-Class which was built as an exact replica of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sparkman & Stephens, Inc. The international team at OneSails cut cloth for some of the biggest names in the industry, designing sails for superyachts, as well as classics and dinghies. It was here that Will, already an experienced small boat sailor, began sailing and racing more frequently, eventually meeting English comedian Griff Rhys Jones and joining the race crew of his 1948 Bermudan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sparkman & Stephens, Inc. (Company)">Sparkman &amp; Stephens</a> yawl, Argyll. His passion for classic yachts already ignited, it was Will's firm ambition to join one of the Class and compete in the once in a lifetime regatta. Eventually his dream was recognised, with the invitation to join <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ranger41.55m (136'4&quot;)Danish Yachts2003">Ranger</a> as deckhand. “The mate at the time was promoted to captain, and he took me on and I worked through the ranks, which is the best way to learn these yachts. Even though <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ranger41.55m (136'4&quot;)Danish Yachts2003">Ranger</a> has had a refit since I was last aboard, I am still familiar with both of the yachts, having spent so much time aboard.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195515/image/large-74bdf602eba6143a336b0fe716023033.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195515">For many sailors who witnessed the 2017 America’s Cup, the spectacular show of the J-Class competition stood out as a pinnacle of the event. Processing through Hamilton Harbour, gigantic flags billowing at their stern, the J-Class yachts truly put on a show, and for Will it was a top moment of his career. “Bermuda is definitely the highlight for anyone that has sailed aboard these yachts in recent years, it is easily the highlight of my career.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195513/image/large-ce1f6035c0d913dfafb3f22b12e18447.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195513">It was not all fun and games however, the regatta was a serious affair and every owner, captain and crew wanted to take the top spot during the races. Racing on a yacht coming toward its centenary isn’t without its difficulties, and Bermuda posed some additional challenges for the crew. With the water temperature considerably hotter than the Mediterranean, and the yachts being pushed to their limits, sometimes with only thirty minutes between races. There wasn't much time to catch your breath, “One day we did three windward-leeward courses, which for a J-Class is massive, especially in the small space within the reef in Bermuda. As Will explained, many of the Class’ take a year out after big racing seasons like 2017 because the investment of time means less time for cruising, the other hugely rewarding part of owning a J-Class. The owner of one of the newest J's to the fleet, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2632" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Topaz42.62m (139'10&quot;)Holland Jachtbouw2015">Topaz</a>, launched in 2015, fortunately shares the enthusiasm for racing clearly displayed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1933">Velsheda</a>’s owner, and the two yachts go bow-to-bow at almost every regatta. Previously named Absinthe but originally christened Nefertiti, she was delivered by the Spanish shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/855" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Astilleros Celaya S.A. (Company)">Astilleros Celaya</a> in 1973. She features an exterior design by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sparkman & Stephens, Inc. (Company)">Sparkman &amp; Stephens</a> and a refitted interior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/27" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Newcruise (Company)">Newcruise</a>. Since her original conception, a lot has changed on board <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1922" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Voyager61.26m (200'12&quot;)Astilleros Celaya S.A.1973">Voyager</a>, she underwent a major refit between 2019 and 2020 with 18 months of technical and mechanical refitting, including an overhaul of all her mechanics as well as a hull and superstructure respray and cosmetic refurbishment inside. In addition, the yacht’s aft deck swimming pool has been removed, her main deck superstructure has been lengthened, and a helideck was added. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1922" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Voyager61.26m (200'12&quot;)Astilleros Celaya S.A.1973">Voyager</a> is able to accommodate up to 22 guests in 11 staterooms taken care of by a crew of 19. Performance-wise, she has a top speed of 17 knots and an ocean-crossing range of 8,100 nautical miles while cruising at 12 knots. She is currently listed for sale with an asking price of €8,500,000.

Therefore we agreed to collaborate with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> to create a versatile exploring super yacht under 500 gross tonnes. The superyacht will be able to accommodate as many as 12 guests and nine crew, and is set to be teeming with amenities. Arguably, her most standout feature is her open aft deck that is incredibly versatile, as it can be used for tender storage or transformed into a very generous social space, thanks to a pair of fold-out wings in her bulwark. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241493/image/large-ade91f23f5e66842492740a8880ba3e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241493">The aft deck is home to a large pool and has multiple seating arrangements spread across the tri-tired deck space; offering guests a space that is simultaneously social and private. The superyacht is being built to a design by Ivan Erdevicki and his Vancouver-based studio, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1343" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ER Yacht Design (Company)">ER Yacht Design</a>, and boasts state-of-the-art luxury coupled with round-the-world capabilities, meeting stringent ice &amp; polar class requirements.&nbsp;“This is the kind of project that a yacht designer waits for all his life,” Ivan Erdevicki commented. “The owner specifically requested a custom-designed long-range go-anywhere project for an expedition motor yacht, with style and an elegant timeless-classic look, that I was very happy to land on my desk!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223056/image/large-ce046b6ac62cb1b45b6099b4d8c51c81.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223056">The 65-metre ER65 marks the start of a promising long-term partnership between the Canadian design studio and the Turkish shipyard. The first fruit of this relationship is certainly exciting and the team has ensured she packs a punch. The ER65 is fitted with a library, sauna, gym, beach club, massage room and medical centre. Last Saturday (19th March) saw the third day of racing at one of the world’s most prestigious four-day regattas, <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St Barths Bucket Regatta - 2022">St Barths Bucket Regatta</a>. The sailors had plenty of time to mentally prepare for the course as winds gusting over 25 knots led to a delay of two hours for the events to begin.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220441/image/large-d3bcc76ff20b93bdf4be666c24fd93ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220441">The day’s racing saw two classes, the Grand Dames and L’Esprit, sail the same 18.4 nautical miles clockwise around and through small islands and rock groupings on the west and north side of the island of Saint Barthélémy. The other five classes, Les Gazelles, Les Elegantes, Les Mademoiselles, Les Petites Dames and J-Class also sailed a similar route but with some longer legs to stretch the trek to just over 23 nautical miles.Thankfully the wind conditions had improved to a cool 17-18 knots for the first pursuit start at 1:30pm for the L’Esprit Class. But the wind then whipped up again to 30+ knots when strong winds and sideways rain hit in the vicinity of the islands Ile Fourchue and Ile de Boulanger. That was when many in the fleet were embarking on their second downwind leg of the race. The strong winds in the water led to one hour delay for the proceedings of what was to be 30 pursuit starts for the superyachts competing at the 35th edition of <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St Barths Bucket Regatta - 2022">St. Barths Bucket</a>.The J-Class boats started, only to have their race abandoned after a few short legs on the “Wrong Way” race around the island. The winds were exceeding 25 knots and reaching battering highs in the 30s on the far side of the island. The race committee then made the difficult decision to abandon the racing for all other classes before they had even started.&nbsp;With that, all the scores from Saturday’s races served as the final results for the regatta. The winner in the J-Class was the refitted 41.63-metre sloop <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ranger41.55m (136'4&quot;)Danish Yachts2003">Ranger</a>, who was new to the event as well as her skipper Ed Baird.
