Powered by Mercury stern drives for a top speed of nearly 50 knots, the elegant cedar and mahogany runabout will have bespoke aviation-grade dashboard gauges inspired by 1950s and ’60s sports cars and a cathedral-style skylight in the foredeck illuminating &nbsp; &nbsp; the covered seating below. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179288/image/large-05cf532524e5b504dbb7fc4eb504f44e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179288">The gentleman’s tender will be named 'Spirit of Phi' and, true to her name, the design has been developed to adhere to the rule of &nbsp;phi, even down to the fabric patterns. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> is also developing an eight-metre sailing dinghy for the owner with a collapsible mast and keel that can be easily handled by one person.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/179287/image/large-9f7ddbd6c5259c346464d5c39c3e20ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/179287">The shadow vessel will further carry a customised Axopar 37 Sun-Top sports tender. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system will propel the yacht silently for up to 30nm at 8-knots from battery power alone. Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades commented: “The brief was a combination of his love for furniture and organic architecture. The client had recently visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and this was the catalyst for the idea of the warm soft flowing walls creating unique focal points within the room. Whilst appearing simple these twisting forms are co-ordinated perfectly with the beautiful skylights above creating a calm and tranquil ambience. These elegant forms not only twist and peel to create counters but uniquely create the intimate backdrops for the highly detailed ‘steam pieces’ which blur the line between furniture and sculpture. It has been an absolute privilege to work on this project with the client and the craftsmen and women who created it.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169808/image/large-6ddc06d841350af44f8cf6de05d37ea9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169808">With exposed Sipo, teak and American Walnut timbers on show, the interior plan includes an open-plan saloon and galley, discreet doors and lighting systems both with sensor-activated operation. For accommodation, guests have the choice of two double ensuite aft staterooms or a starboard-side double VIP cabin. The forward cabin holds the spacious master suite, complete with curved sofas built into the side of the hull, a double bed and ensuite. &nbsp;Rhoades Young designer Marcus Wright added: “It was a great privilege to represent the owner’s interests and ensure we delivered a yacht that surpassed his expectations. &nbsp;With the knowledge that Spirit Yachts can make absolutely anything in wood, it was a thoroughly enjoyable process to take Rhoades Young’s beautiful interpretation of an unusual brief and assist in the creation of such a work of art.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83916/image/large-3df2cfd70a54d3fa70226ab2959ff431.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83916">

Spirit Yachts delivers 34m eco-sailing yacht Geist

In England this week, Spirit Yachts delivered 34m eco-sailing yacht Geist.

<a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE - 2019">METSTRADE,</a> the world's largest trade exhibition of marine equipment, materials and systems closed its doors to visitors on 21st November. Here, we look at some of the highlights of this year’s edition, which saw record numbers of both visitors and exhibitors in attendance and demonstrated a clear focus on many of the vital issues facing the marine sector, including cybersecurity, digitalisation, open workforces, international trade and sustainability.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/105202/image/large-065b940483bb2add15e6209f0f974a42.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/105202">With the 32nd edition of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/49" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE - 2019">METSTRADE</a> show taking place at the bustling RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, there were 26,984 visits registered by 17,792 visitors, who represented an impressive 115 nationalities. The yacht has the ability to operate without using any fossil fuels thanks to an energy regeneration system that charges the BMW battery banks while the yacht is under sail. Stuart further explained: “Using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days at anchor without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators. The flowing shapes and lack of portholes make for a strange layout, but this is all part of the design, as Jonathan Rhoades explains. “The client had recently visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and this was the catalyst for the idea of the warm soft flowing walls creating unique focal points within the room. These elegant forms not only twist and peel to create counters but uniquely create the intimate backdrops for the highly detailed ‘steam pieces’ which blur the line between furniture and sculpture.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/83911/image/large-2acbcccd3ad071379babba36da4dd670.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83911"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/100845/image/large-d59f8224d07908e04f1131bfef763e7a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100845">Continuing the power-saving philosophy, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7109" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit 11133.9m (111'3&quot;)Spirit Yachts Ltd2019">Spirit 111</a> has virtually no light switches throughout her interior, with motion-sensors activating lights as needed. At night, this effect becomes even smarter, Stuart adds: “sensors under the beds will detect if someone is up and light the way to the nearest ensuite. The modern classic sailing boats by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> are always head-turners and its 111-footer due to launch later this summer is no exception. SuperYacht Times travelled to Ipswich, UK, to grab a sneak preview.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83909/image/large-4a7a900de673653364880549a6ab6efa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83909">With her lightweight wood and epoxy construction, flush decks, long overhangs and low freeboard, the 33.80-metre yacht is typical of the beautiful boats built by the British shipyard, which is why a Spirit Yachts 54 was chosen to appear in the James Bond movie Casino Royale. But her elegant exterior lines conceal some very advanced technology and utterly unique interior design. The build management of this exciting project is being carried out by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2548" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cornelsen & Partner Yacht Consulting GmbH (Company)">Cornelsen &amp; Partner</a>, with founder Jens Cornelsen representing the owner throughout the build.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83910/image/large-de8b594ccdc4a933c81bdd47c987c0fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83910">Built entirely in-house, the Spirit 111 has been designed from the keel up to be as eco-friendly and fuel-efficient as possible, starting with her Torqueedo electric drive system. Supported by four BMWi lithium battery banks, the system can power the yacht for modest distances or when manoeuvring. Under sail, the turning propeller will automatically recharge the batteries.“Right at the beginning we asked the young owner, who already has a Spirit Yachts 52, if he wanted a Prius or a Tesla: he definitely wanted the latter,” says CEO and head designer Sean McMillan. “With careful consumption, the yacht can operate solely under battery power, but for longer distances, there is the option of two back-up generators.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83907/image/large-56ec93e4220e6a3f512908b2cfbaf6d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83907">As the owner also intends to race with the yacht, reducing weight to increase performance under sail was another consideration. The wood and epoxy construction method used by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> is already surprisingly lightweight, offering a strength-to-weight ratio on a par with carbon fibre, and lightships the yacht will displace just 58 tonnes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83906/image/large-54c3c66509fb3f4feb969f920f9d7e70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83906">The most dramatic innovation, however, is the yacht’s interior design developed by Rhoades Young – the first time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a> has worked with an outside design studio.“The inspiration came from the owner’s visit to Antelope Canyon in Arizona,” says Jonathan Rhoades. “The canyon has been eroded by wind and water into weird and wonderful shapes that he wanted to recreate on the boat.”The result is extraordinary with a general arrangement based on a twisting, leaning ‘ribbon’ that runs through the guest and owner’s areas. Suffice to say there is hardly a flat or vertical surface in the whole boat – everything is composed of flowing compounds curves.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83914/image/large-e08145fa0c61b995efd018ee13baa579.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83914">The focal point in the main salon is a bespoke, oval sofa and a glass-topped table made of American black walnut. From here a companionway winds its way forward to the VIP cabin and owner’s suite with beds that are partially cocooned inside egg-shaped cupolas.“The owner told us he wanted a work of art, but making it all look simple is actually very hard,”&nbsp;says McMillan. “There are so many complex curves that meet each other, the only way to built it is in the boat.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83911/image/large-2acbcccd3ad071379babba36da4dd670.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83911">The bulkheads and fitted furniture are of sipa wood, a non-threatened hardwood like mahogany, which has been painstakingly cut and matched so that the grain is always vertical. Even the washbasins in the bathrooms have been sculpted out of the wood surfaces. But that’s not all:“There are no door handles on the boat,” says Nigel Stuart, MD of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/296" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spirit Yachts Ltd (Company)">Spirit Yachts</a>. “Instead, the doors have hidden ‘scoops’ where you put your hand and sensors that automatically open or close the door.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83912/image/large-dae97817786401cc4899725c0e9e193d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83912">There are no light switches either. Instead, the custom-designed LED lighting system can track movement on board and light different areas accordingly. If a guest has to get up in the night to use the head, courtesy lighting will automatically light up to lead the way and then illuminate the bathroom.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/83913/image/large-831de3e054105100e9cc9250ed124c93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/83913">“The system is fitted with a GPS clock that knows exactly when sunrise and sunset are, wherever the yacht is in the world,” continues Stuart. “Sensors can then detect and replicate the same temperature on the Kelvin scale of the outside light, inside the boat.”Unusually, there is no onboard entertainment system and no TVs. Instead, the owner preferred a portable music system that can be placed around the boat and connected to plug-in points to recharge.&nbsp;The Spirit Yachts 111 breaks new ground on so many levels that it has to be seen to be believed. The Superyacht Cup ( SYC) 2015 Palma is about to kick off again, celebrating its nineteenth edition. 21 Yachts to compete in the Superyacht Cup Palma

Spirit Yachts and Rhoades Young have recently revealed the designs for a new 34.25 metre superyacht in an exclusive collaboration. Named Spirit Royale, the General Arrangement plan of wooden built vessel is presented here in watercolour designs.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154163/image/large-a550b4d36daed395ef2cdb80cf9ecb22.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154163">She accommodates up to 10 guests on board over a five cabin layout, including a spacious owner’s suite located on the main deck which boasts a 200° panoramic view with double doors opening out onto a private foredeck. Guest accommodation is found on the lower deck, and consists of two twin and two double cabins, all of which are en-suite.One of her most notable characteristics is an impressive full height staircase under an octagonal glass atrium which provides access to the main saloon, lower saloon, wheelhouse and guest cabins. The spacious saloon offers impressive entertaining space with the option for furniture to be specified by the owner.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154164/image/large-cad34ce255cac3b57715ff1c250f9668.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154164">Downstairs, the lower saloon has additional seating and a drinks bar with surrounding stools. Also in this area is a ‘fold-out’ hull section, which merges the interior and exterior of the yacht. The opening hull creates a large open outdoor swimming and sunbathing platform complete with swim showers and provision for tenders to come alongside and drop off guests.Elsewhere outside, the aft area on the main deck has been designed for socialisation and relaxation, with a dining area for ten as well as additional seating and sunbeds. Aft on the upper deck an 8.5 metre Classic ‘Slipper’ style harbour launch and a 4 metre ‘Whitehall’ style sailing dinghy can be launched directly into the water by crane. Introduced by Spirit Yachts, the latest 31 metre P100 Spirit Powerboat reportedly generated considerable interest at the latest Singapore Yacht Show, which took place from the 23rd to 26th April. Her exterior is finished in deep lacquered mahogany from stern to stern, with the layout and equipment specification below deck being totally dependent on the owner’s wishes.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/154171/image/large-6af4436d4b046be83843ed6000378208.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/154171">The brand comments on the development of the design, stating, “For many years Spirit Yachts has been at the vanguard of creating a whole new concept in sailing yacht design and is now amongst the world leaders in the design and build of 'Modern Classics'. The P100 Spirit Powerboat

Spirit Yachts Ltd has announced an historic collaboration with Sparkman &amp; Stephens Inc to build a new J-Class yacht. This iconic new ‘J’ will be named Cheveyo (pronounced shu-Vay-o), a native American word meaning “spirit warrior.” Registered in the United States, the yacht will carry sail number J1. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138530/image/large-25e6267e8f3207d8f9bff1369d2077bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138530">Cheveyo will be steeped in rich history, built to the Ranger 77B design. This is one of the original series of six designs submitted by Starling Burgess and Olin Stephens to Harold Vanderbilt for the 1937 America’s Cup defence. In 1936, each of the six Ranger designs was extensively tank tested by Burgess and Stephens to select the optimum hull-form to defend the America’s Cup against the challenger Endeavour II, designed by Charles Nicholson. Vanderbilt selected the ‘C’ version because it was found to have the best potential for racing solely in the sheltered waters off Newport RI. The ‘Super J’ Ranger was thus born, and went on to triumph decisively over Endeavour II in the 1937 series. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138531/image/large-de37a764fbc32f1c8061dc09f608d3d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138531">For 2012, S&amp;S and Spirit Yachts have further evaluated the Ranger design series. The prestigious US-based design house conducted an in-depth survey of all of the original Burgess/Stephens J-Class lines in their library. These designs were optimized for two variables: Spirit Yachts’ advanced wood/composite construction techniques as well as for the more exposed conditions of today’s Classic regattas. The Ranger 77B version was identified as the clear star. Cheveyo will marry the classic design of yachting’s golden era with modern build techniques of the 21st century. Spirit Yachts – the world’s foremost expert in sophisticated wood/epoxy construction – will build the ‘J’ using this sophisticated technique mated to laser cut stainless steel ring frames to create an exceptionally stiff yet lightweight hull. Spirit and S&amp;S are currently finalising construction drawings suited to this superb wood/composite build system. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/138532/image/large-a257e5cc321b2da64c4b3a36901087dc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/138532">Bruce Johnson, President and Chief Designer of Sparkman &amp; Stephens, observes: “By utilizing the wood composite construction technique that Spirit Yachts has perfected over the years, Cheveyo will break from the current norm of modern J’s aluminum construction and return to a more historically accurate construction method, albeit with the use of modern epoxies and laminating techniques to maintain a light-weight structure. As a further nod to historical accuracy, she will float on her lines as designed in 1936, not requiring the J-Class Association’s additional freeboard allowance, thus resulting in less wetted surface area.” On deck, this new ‘Super-J’ will remain true to the beauty and grace of the original design. The authentic low-profile deckhouse has been retained, resulting in a clean, unobstructed working deck and an exquisitely beautiful sheerline. Complementing this heritage will be high-modulus carbon spars, carbon rigging, state of the art sails and all the modern sophistication of a contemporary performance yacht that will allow her to be raced competitively against any modern yacht and, most importantly, in the spectacular growing J-Class fleet. Authenticity continues below deck with a beautiful 1930’s-inspired interior that will offer excellent accommodation for up to ten guests in five handsomely appointed and comfortable cabins.
