The vessel underwent an extensive overhaul by the Lusben team, who notably extended her overall length from the original 42.2-metres, with a 2.4-metre extension at her stern, and a 2.2-metre extension at her bow. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/193878/image/large-221b917679f20c984c244486fcc8f1dd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/193878">The motor yacht, originally commissioned by the late Andrea Merloni of Fineldo and Indesit, was due to undergo the refit prior to her owner's death. After the incident, Merloni’s family moved to go forward with the intended modifications out of respect for her owner. Her previous owner was a major contributor to the works, collaborating with Andrea Pezzini, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1087" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Floating Life (Company)">Floating Life</a> and the naval architect Mauro Sculli. The work has entirely amended the interior spaces of the motor yacht, which now has an increased top speed of 17 knots, from the original 15,8 knots, offered by new generators. Her consumption has also been reduced by 20%. In addition to the structural changes, her interiors have been refurbished, two lifts have been added and an emergency staircase from the owners suite has been installed. She is the Ancona-based yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere delle Marche (CdM) (Company)">CdM's</a> first full-custom project and based on a project by Andrea Pezzini of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1087" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Floating Life (Company)">Floating Life&nbsp;</a>(who also acted as the owner’s representative) in collaboration with Mauro Sculli and Sergio Cutolo for the naval architecture and engineering respectively. The high bow and chunky superstructure may not be to everyone’s taste and her general arrangement is certainly unconventional, but once on board the owner’s reasoning behind the styling and layout becomes much clearer. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/68515/image/large-ce7a701e474b12c3eab052dc4d87d248.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68515"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/68516/image/large-1be2e06a8f37f0074157915d6ead31c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68516">“I’m single with no children, I have time on my hands, and I’m fortunate enough to have some money in the bank,” Andrea Merloni, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6034" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Audace42.8m (140'5&quot;)Cantiere delle Marche (CdM)2019">Audace</a>’s straight-talking Italian owner, told SuperYacht Times last summer.&nbsp;“I want to make the most of life and this yacht is my way of doing that.”Merloni, who plans to live year-round on board, had two principle requests in terms of design and layout. Firstly, he wanted a real explorer rather than a floating palace&nbsp;“full of marble and gold taps”; and secondly he wanted the entire top deck reserved for his own private use. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/68232/image/large-b05f9ea35468ede093b1202c575b6098.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68232"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/68223/image/large-f138cd9f90a5a96a3cc8ffaf47256a54.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68223">In fact, the owner’s deck can only be accessed by a private staircase with a security door at the foot of the stairs to prevent unauthorised access. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/68231/image/large-f4720ce05a960c739b102af5c6f4e0da.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68231">The cabin itself with double bathroom is located forward, and there is a small galley connected to the pantry so he doesn’t always have to rely on crew service. Aft of the staircase is a living area with comfy loungers and a giant flat-screen TV. With walk-around side decks, there is a Jacuzzi on the open aft deck.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/68225/image/large-5364a45a3921aab1e52eb34c1c9fa39d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68225">The upper deck wheelhouse has a Böning/Furuno integrated bridge system and an island console so crew on watch can get up close to the windshield, and there is also a Portuguese bridge. Behind the captain’s cabin, the rest of the deck is taken up with a cosy guest salon that can also be used as a cinema/media room overlooking the stern terrace.Half the length of the main deck is taken up by the open and semi-open aft deck. The open deck will carry a 10-metre custom tender being built by the owner when not in use or being towed and is deployed using an 8.9-tonne capacity crane that the owner specifically asked to be painted Ferrari red.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/68221/image/large-66527e655c095a67a5969d03920bce60.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68221"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/68222/image/large-cdc56095da174c2c18df6bd20505d4df.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68222">A similar but smaller crane in the bow is used to launch a customised land Rover Defender (yet to be delivered), a BMW GS 1200 off-road motorbike, a Jet Ski and the crew tender. Interestingly, the mezzanine deck in the bow is made of lightweight composites so it can be easily removed during loading operations. &nbsp;The owner did not want a formal salon on the main deck that would never be used. Instead, there is semi-enclosed, multifunctional space with a DJ station for partying and a TV screen that lowers from the ceiling and swivels 360°. Inside are two guest cabins with double doors that open onto the side decks. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/68226/image/large-29a56838d648a471db3e83ad67e8dcb8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68226">The lower deck aft is taken up by another multifunctional space that serves as a beach club or disco equipped with a sophisticated DJ and audio-visual system (the walls and ceiling are clad with extra-thick insulation to ensure all the sound stays inside the disco when in port). Amidships are two VIP suites with private fold-down balconies. The pro-spec galley fitted out by Marrone is enormous and can prepare food for up to 250 guests at a time. There is very comfortable and spacious accommodation for eight crew forward.“Another priority for me was the crew quarters,”&nbsp;says the owner. “As a live-aboard owner I spend more time with my crew than with my guests and – believe me – if they’re not happy, neither am I.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/68229/image/large-67afeca007cf9bba3006ddf9f202b0b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68229">The under lower deck, highly unusual for this size of vessel, runs the length of the yacht. It is divided into various compartments comprising an aft control room, engine room, forward control room, laundry, refrigerated garbage room and cold storage. The owner resisted any attempt to add cosmetic frills and there is no marble or other exotic materials on board. Audace, known as project K42, touched the water yesterday at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere delle Marche (CDM) (Company)">CdM</a> shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The 42.8-metre explorer superyacht was built for an Italian owner who will live onboard all year. Sergio Cutolo from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1181" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydro Tec S.r.l. (Company)">HydroTec</a> supplied the superyacht’s engineering, which was project managed by Domenico Ranieri, who worked in close collaboration with the owner’s representative Andrea Pezzini of Floating Life. &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/60344/image/large-29b2c6c1da56ec69d0a6401d9b51a79d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/60344"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/60343/image/large-0ee0c3d56b37a75962435eeef381317a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/60343">The four-deck layout, including a large tank deck, can accommodate guests in four staterooms: two on the lower deck with balconies and two on the main deck with direct access to the side passages. With nine berths for crew and a professional galley for two chefs to prepare meals for up to 250 guests, CdM has “created environments and amenities that perfectly fit his [the owner’s] lifestyle.” &nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/60353/image/large-d9e24fa0bf384dfa1a2f31660b27e300.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/60353">The 490GT superyacht is stocked with a Land Rover Defender, a BMW motorbike, water-ski, and crew tender, which are stored on the forward deck. CdM launches 43m custom explorer Audace

Andrea Merloni is the Italian owner of K42, the custom explorer in build at Cantiere delle Marche in Ancona. Formerly chairman of Indesit, the domestic appliance giant founded by his late father, he decided to invest a portion of his inheritance in a yacht tailored to his very specific lifestyle. SuperYacht Times recently caught up with the 51-year-old owner in Milan.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/51113/image/large-c9c3727f3d4c6c90c87e2fe1345e9b4e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/51113">By any measure, Andrea Merloni is not your typical superyacht owner. For a start, he actually lives aboard his current yacht, a 29-metre trawler built in Brazil by Inace, which he keeps in Ibiza. He bought the used vessel in 2009 and renamed her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7556" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A.B. Normal28.96m (95'0&quot;)">A.B. Normal</a>, after the hilarious scene in the cult movie Young Frankenstein when Gene Wilder in the title role discovers that the brain for his monster is from someone called Abby Normal, AKA ‘Abnormal’. For the last few years the yacht has been his floating home, and its shortcomings provided the motivation for building a new one from scratch. The result is K42, the 42-metre explorer approaching completion at Cantiere delle Marche.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/19073/image/large-bf22a2d8720f9aad545f6884f2945bf8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19073">“Most yachts are designed for people who might spend two or three weeks on board each year,”&nbsp;he says.&nbsp;“But because I live on my boat, my situation is very different. Between friends and crew, I’m never alone on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7556" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A.B. Normal28.96m (95'0&quot;)">A.B. Normal</a>. The only privacy I have is in my cabin on the lower deck, which has portholes that can’t be opened and if I want to smoke I have to do it in the bathroom! So I needed a different boat with a different layout that separated the guest areas from my own accommodation.”Merloni connected with Andrea Pezzini, an experienced yachting consultant and founder of Floating Life. Together they approached a well-known builder of series yachts, but drew a blank when the Italian brand baulked at the list of modifications required. At this point, Pezzini suggested using the technical platform he had developed with Studio Sculli for a 40-metre explorer in build at Cerri Cantieri Navali, as the starting point for a custom new-build.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/19077/image/large-9387fee77baa97b3b47fbd06addef56c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19077">“I had two conditions,” says the owner, spreading the plans of K42 out on the dining table next to a scale model of the yacht. “Firstly, I wanted a real explorer, not a floating palace full of marble and gold taps. And secondly, I wanted the whole top deck, the only place you can have complete privacy, for my own use.”&nbsp;These two requirements determined the rest of the unusual layout, whereby Merloni set out to limit the circulation flow between the social and private spaces by confining the guest areas to the main and lower deck in carefully planned and self-contained zones. &nbsp;“This is my home and you don’t want people wandering all over your house,” he explains. “So there are two guest cabins on the lower with fold-down terraces, and two on the main deck with doors that open onto the side companionways.”&nbsp;Eschewing the idea of a beach club (“we have plenty of those in Ibiza...”), he designated the lower deck aft of the guest cabins for a multi-purpose room that serves as a gym and party space with its own sound system and DJ station. Where the salon and formal dining room would usually be on the main deck, there is a semi-enclosed space for informal dining with a drinks and teppanyaki bar. Behind the wheelhouse and captain’s cabin on the upper deck is a media room with a comfy chaise longue for lounging in front of the wide-screen TV, which the owner can use alone or in company.In line with its explorer vocation, Merloni also stipulated generous storage and technical areas. The pro-spec galley is a case in point. Fitted out with commercial equipment by Marrone, which supplies some Michelin-starred restaurants, the galley is immense for the size of the yacht and two chefs can prepare food for up to 250 guests at a time. The under-lower deck houses ample cold and dry storage, as well as a dedicated laundry, refrigerated garbage room and a temperature-controlled wine cellar.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35291/image/large-910f958d1f86684b448f0ca0b16c322f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35291">“There’s no point building a boat that can go round the world, and then living off tinned tuna,” Merloni jokes. “On <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7556" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A.B. Normal28.96m (95'0&quot;)">A.B. Normal</a> I have just one fridge-freezer, which is next to useless with a lot of guests on board because you have to resupply every day. Another priority was comfortable quarters for my crew. As a live-aboard owner, I spend more time with them than with my guests and, believe me, if they’re not happy neither am I.”&nbsp;Then there are the toys. On her foredeck, K42 will carry a Land Rover Defender customised by UK-based Tweaked Automotive, a BMW GS 1200 motorbike, a Jet Ski and the crew tender. Merloni originally planned to have a 10-metre, 40-knot chase boat supplied by Icelandic specialists Rafner Leiftur on the main aft deck, but when the yard had difficulty delivering on schedule he decided to build his own. Both the heavy 4x4 vehicle and tender require high-capacity cranes, which were custom built and painted bright red. &nbsp;“A proper tender was absolutely essential,” says the owner. “On&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7556" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A.B. Normal28.96m (95'0&quot;)">A. B. Normal&nbsp;</a>we tow the chase boat when it’s not being used, which can mean delaying our departure in rough seas. I wanted the space to be able to carry the tender on deck during long transits, whatever the weather.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/681/image/large-445d82612aa87029cf977a79bafcbcc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/681">When it came to choosing the yard to build K42, Merloni considered various options. Cantiere delle Marche emerged as the natural choice for several reasons, not least because the yard had a solid track record of building its Darwin series of sturdy passagemakers. The owner also grew up near Ancona and knew Gabriele Virgili, the shipyard’s chairman and fellow motorbike enthusiast (Merloni used to race professionally and later owned the Benelli motorbike brand). K42 was instrumental in the yard’s decision to set up its one-off division and a new construction shed was built to house the project.&nbsp;On boarding the unfinished yacht in the shipyard, the impression is of being on a much larger vessel. The exterior profile is deliberately utilitarian and not particularly pretty by superyacht standards. Keeping the five-decker below the 500GT threshold also required shaving a few millimetres off ceiling heights, widening the side decks and introducing semi-enclosed spaces that are compensated for in the gross tonnage calculation.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/19087/image/large-85b15b912184bc0af3a97572f94b06e2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19087">“She’s a spartan boat in many ways, but that’s exactly what the owner wanted,” says Ennio Cecchini, CEO of Cantiere delle Marche. “At first he didn’t want any fairing at all, but we convinced him to have a light fairing as opposed to a full superyacht paint finish. There aren’t even any sliding glass doors on board. She is what she seems: a seaworthy explorer designed to be lived on with styling, engineering and a layout to match.”By the time Merloni takes delivery of K42 at the beginning of next year, it will be too late in the season to make the crossing to the Caribbean. New photos of superyacht Kanga

Italian shipyard CCN has launched its first yacht of 2018 this month. After the success of the custom 50-metre high-speed superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4845" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Elsea49.9m (163'9&quot;)">Elsea</a> which was launched last year comes the first glimpse of a new type of vessel for the shipyard; the high-volume 41-metre Kanga.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/34600/image/large-12b95fe1f7284982c6cd5fde950d21d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/34600">Lying outside the shipyard in La Spezia, SuperYacht Times sighted the new yacht on a recent visit to the area where these images were taken. CCN launches 41-metre superyacht Kanga in La Spezia

Construction on the second custom model of Floating Life's K-Series - the K42 - is in full swing at the Cantiere Delle Marche Shipyard in Italy.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/19090/image/large-cdb682296b06313911ff1a3194b3c6f2.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19090">The build of the one-off 42-metre K42 custom superyacht, owned by and created in partnership with Floating Life, was secured by the Italian shipyard Cantiere delle Marche in January 2017, with a separate build team from the shipyard working on the construction of this sub 500 GT project.The second K-Series unit is a five-deck yacht, 42.8 meters long, with a maximum beam of 9.4-metres. In her current state, the 42-metre explorer yacht now has a completed hull, her deck structures are almost all in position and the installation of her onboard systems has begun. The Italian yard has also begun hull verification in preparation for painting.The naval architecture behind K42 has been developed by Studio Hydrotec, with Studio Sculli having designed the exterior and interior areas, and she is expected to be ready for delivery by the end of 2018. When she is launched, K42 will become the shipyard’s sixth yacht over 100 feet.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/19085/image/large-6a9f4d83bee4149bfe14074adf6ed990.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19085"> Designed and built as an explorer concept, the motor yacht K42 is a custom model which boasts a 5,000 nautical mile range at 10 knots for cruising in seas in all corners of the world. Every client of Floating Life's K-series can choose between completely custom superstructures, interior layouts, finishings and décor.&nbsp;As part of this K-Series from Floating Life - &nbsp;which includes the flagship vessel K40 - the stucco for the K42 will be 4mm thick, instead of the more typical width of 10 to 20 mm, thus giving the explorer a much trimmer appearance and a more homogeneous hull.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/19079/image/large-a38e606072162f6279742bee4a15ba61.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19079">Following the new production philosophy developed by Floating Life for this series, the K-Series hull was created using a sophisticated hydrodynamic computer program and then tank tested at Goteborg (SSPA). The overall height of the vessel is 5.8-metres with a 2.8-metre draft at full load.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/19073/image/large-bf22a2d8720f9aad545f6884f2945bf8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/19073"> As evident from the renderings, the K42 features resolute and aggressive lines. On board, the K42 is filled with innovative features like the immense beach club on the lower deck that can be completely soundproofed.In addition, the 50m2&nbsp;bathing platform astern features a secondary extendable platform. The 170m2 aft deck transforms into a cinema or a partially sheltered open-air disco, as well as two interior salons and an outdoor dining area that can seat up to 14 guests. &nbsp;Conceived as an exclusive owner’s deck, the almost 75m2 upper deck includes the owner’s cabin, two bathrooms, a spacious salon and a jacuzzi on a private terrace facing aft.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/682/image/large-6b274e735d532503974d35899f6f98c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/682">The upper deck holds the skipper’s quarters which communicate directly with the bridge. The bridge itself features an integrated instrument panel with navigation and communication systems usually only found on 60-metre long yachts.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/680/image/large-15ccbe9a3e414e798980093d4986b9dc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/680"> The K42 offers generous onboard spaces, as evident from the aft section of the main deck which is capable of holding an 11-metre tender. The main deck continues with a spacious living zone and two guest cabins, both of which feature their own bathrooms. &nbsp;As requested by the owner, a 6-metre tender, a jet ski and an SUV are also accommodated forward.
