The superyacht community came together once again in Palma earlier this month for the annual <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> Golf Day. While the clouds threatened, the rain held off, letting teams enjoy a day of networking, fundraising, and just enough friendly rivalry to keep things interesting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/376281/image/large-d06c89ec057f7483e4ec39e1aea0508e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/376281">In total, 270 industry friends and associates gathered during the day and evening to help raise valuable funds. This Autumn, Palma de Mallorca will once again host one of the most highly anticipated events in the Mediterranean: the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> Golf Event. Taking place this year on Thursday, October 9th, the event is more than a sporting occasion; it combines camaraderie and competition, with a focus on philanthropy. Since then, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">SYC</a> has built a reputation for staging high-quality, enjoyable events that funnel 100 percent of donations to charity.Besides bringing together the yachting community and focusing on charity, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">SYC</a> Golf Day carries an additional goal: partly filling the space left by the iconic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/340" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pinmar (Company)">Pinmar</a> Golf Tournament. An event that was long regarded as one of the highlights of the yachting social calendar. “We never wanted to replicate <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/340" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pinmar (Company)">Pinmar</a>’s multi-day spectacle,” the trustees explained. “Instead, we created a simpler, one-day event that allows the community to reconnect, have fun, and raise money for those in need. Funds raised at this year’s event will support two charities: Yachting Gives Back (YGB) and the Shambhala Foundation. YGB is a Mallorca-based initiative, founded in 2019, that aids the homeless and hungry. They collect food, clothing, bedding, hygiene and cleaning products, as well as financial donations. With all they gather, YGB supports eight local charities. Meanwhile, the Shambhala Foundation works to raise the aspirations of disadvantaged young people on the island.A portion of the proceeds will also be directed to Cash for Causes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">SYC</a>’s action fund that provides small but crucial grants to grassroots organisations. “For some of these charities, that amount is the difference between survival and closure,” a trustee explained.To better understand the impact, we spoke with two of the main beneficiaries of last year’s event: Yachting GIves Back and the Shambhala Foundation.Nick Entwisle, from Yachting Gives Back (YGB), knows what impact this day can have. Last year, the charity received €18,700, which Nick says “covered a wide range of needs”. The funds allowed local organisations to purchase essential items the likes of a washing machine, cooker, and persianas (window shutters), for the Siloe AIDS hospice, a six-burner commercial gas cooker for the Tardor Soup Kitchen.Nick has been involved with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> for half a decade, both as a volunteer and a beneficiary. “As a volunteer, I look after all the banners and event materials while supporting logistics,” Nick shares. “And as a very grateful beneficiary, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> has given YGB huge support.” His personal highlight? “The event is such a wonderful way to keep in touch with people I’ve met across 30 years in the industry.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371846/image/large-d2ee1ff603e8c4fb09a4ea228ddd6f41.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371846">Victor Morales, founder of the Shambhala Foundation, reflects on the impact the event has had on their charity. “How moving it is that international organisations such as SuperYacht Charities and partners like Yachting Gives Back care so much about supporting local entities here in Mallorca.” Victor adds that he finds this amazing and should be celebrated, stating, “it makes us reflect: how many local families know that people from the yachting world, who could easily focus only on their own industry, are actually helping to change lives right here in our community? It also offers an opportunity to reconnect with industry peers, support local Mallorcan communities, and showcase not only your skills on the course, but also your generosity.&nbsp;The day itself will be split into three parts: a morning tee, afternoon tee, and an evening on the clubhouse terrace. Spectators are allowed to purchase day tickets or an evening ticket to attend the awards ceremony, raffle and auction. Tickets are designed to cover the cost of the event, while the fundraising happens via sponsorship, the raffle and the auction. The third annual <a href="http://superyachtcharities.com/golf-challenge/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Superyacht Charities Golf Event</a>, approaching on 10 October 2024 in Palma de Mallorca. With it, the foundation is set to hit another milestone in its mission to blend philanthropy with industry gatherings. We caught up with Derek Munro, founder of the foundation to find out more.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289067/image/large-bfd03ba07a4adefd6e2afffd782e7d43.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289067">Superyacht CharitiesFounded by Derek Munro, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> began as a modest gathering of 150 guests in February 2015. By April, the event had grown to 350 attendees, prompting Munro to formalise the charity and leverage the yacht industry's collective influence. The foundation's flagship event, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> Ball, now attracts over 500 attendees annually.&nbsp;“We now run four annual events, which is quite incredible considering where we started and that all of our trustees who organise the events are volunteers and have their own businesses. The Superyacht Ball is the first event of the year, followed by the Seafarers Supper in Palma, then the Golf Event and finally the Antigua Sundowners on the first day of the Antigua Charter Show,” shares Munro. “Part of the reason for the number of events is that we have a lot of return attendees who consistently support one or two events in the calendar year, but we also want to appeal to a broader audience,” he adds.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289065/image/large-1a94aa05c477fb1d9ef7c8696428ee05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289065"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a>’ annual events are managed by volunteer trustees, who run their own businesses while supporting the foundation. Each event benefits two primary charities, receiving 33 percent of the donations each, with an additional 33 percent allocated to the foundation's Cash for Causes Fund. This year, €23,800 (£20,000) from this fund, along with contributions from a GoFundMe campaign, will aid relief efforts in Carriacou (Grenada) and Petite Martinique, areas devastated by Hurricane Beryl. The foundation’s efforts have already included providing a communication tower and contributing to infrastructure reconstruction.The foundation ensures that at least 90 percent of donations directly support charitable work. Beneficiaries are typically small, independent organisations focusing on maritime causes. Initial support went to Sail for Cancer, now a larger entity, while current beneficiaries include JOYRON, aiding children in the Baleares, and Oarsome Chance, supporting young people with special educational needs. Lizette Van Niekerk, a former UK Charity Commission member, plays a crucial role in vetting these charities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289063/image/large-f88ab102ba1aabb771fd7aa030145483.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289063">Palma Golf Charity EventFollowing the success of the 2023 event, the Superyacht Charities Trustees have made the golf event a permanent fixture. The <a href="http://superyachtcharities.com/golf-challenge/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">2024 Superyacht Charities Golf Event (SYCGE)&nbsp;</a>will take place on Thursday, 10th October 2024 at Golf Son Quint, in Palma de Mallorca.“We have 140 players out on the green over the course of the day, playing in pairs with the first group setting off at 8AM. The second group will begin after lunch, which is a Spanish style tapas meal served at the golf course,” shares Munro.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/295206/image/large-197ba6f0bd501727bfcd9fc07e9406a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/295206">“Throughout the day there will be a bar open at the club, with two additional bars on the green itself, as well as a coffee buggy driving around serving coffees and espresso martinis,” he adds. In the evening there will be a Spanish style barbecue, with DJ music and drinks at the club. Founded in 2015 with the goal to raise money for maritime causes and at the same time shine a more positive light on the superyacht sector, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> has now raised more than £750,000. This week on the 12th October, the Foundation will host the second edition of its annual golf event in Palma de Mallorca. We caught up with Derek Munro, founder of the Foundation to find out more about its endeavours, the events it organises and the many organisations that have benefited from its benefaction over the years. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289067/image/large-bfd03ba07a4adefd6e2afffd782e7d43.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289067">How did Superyacht Charities come about - what was the incentive for its genesis?&nbsp;We are based in the UK's New Forest, surrounded by yacht designers, management companies and professionals. The original thought was to get these companies together to raise money for a good cause and have fun in the doing. We planned to host a party in February 2015 for 150 guests but by April we were hosting an event for 350 and it was then that I thought – we could really make a difference with this.&nbsp;I went home, acquired the domain names and then over lunch in a local pub on Friday 08th May 2015 I approached the four others who had all worked together to create the first Pre-Med party and every one of them committed to moving <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> forward.That party has evolved into the annual Superyacht Charities Ball which takes place in the Spring and has 500 attendees from across the sector and international industry. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289065/image/large-1a94aa05c477fb1d9ef7c8696428ee05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289065">What other events does the Foundation host throughout the annual calendar?We now run five annual events, which is quite incredible considering where we started and that all of our trustees who organise the events are volunteers and have their own businesses. TheSuperyacht Ball is the first event of the year, followed by the Seafarers Supper in Palma; the Car Festival which takes place in the New Forest and features a Poker Run style checkpoint rally; the Golf Event and then finally the Antigua Sundowners on the first day of the Antigua Charter Show.&nbsp;Part of the reason for the number of events is that we have a lot of return attendees who consistently support one or two events in the calendar year, but we also want to appeal to a broad audience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289063/image/large-f88ab102ba1aabb771fd7aa030145483.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289063">How does the Foundation select its beneficiaries and can you share some of the charities that have received donations over the years?When we started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7366" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Charities (Company)">Superyacht Charities</a> it was in our manifesto that we would only select beneficiaries that could prove that 95% of our donations were being used for good. That number is now at 90% due to the nature of charities today but by default that has always meant that the charities we support are small, independent and run entirely by volunteers. The goal is to support charities that are doing good but are too small to be self sufficient, and continue that support as they grow.&nbsp;Sail for Cancer was the first charity we supported and over the first few years we donated somewhere around £105,000, but they have grown and are now employing members of staff and no longer need our support. Turn to Starboard, a charity based in Cornwall that helps to rehabilitate veterans, is another that has done incredibly well. The charity actually held an event in London last year and invited our team, and thanked us for helping them get started in their early years – that was a very proud moment. &nbsp;In terms of donation structure, each event has two beneficiaries which receive 30% of the donations each, and then an additional 30% is retained by the Foundation in our Cash for Causes Fund. The Cash for Causes Fund is used for reactive donations towards things such as disaster relief. We have used those funds over the years to assist in Tortola and the Bahamas after hurricanes and we are now discussing putting some money towards the fire that occurred last week in Antigua. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289058/image/large-8d69a6a5734ffb8a2f10364f9d05a782.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289058">How do you make assessments about the charities and causes that receive donations and how do you choose new charities to support?One of our volunteers is a woman called Lizette Van Niekerk who used to be on the UK Charity Commission. Lizette is able to vet the potential charities and review their registration to understand how they operate, check their funding structure to make sure they are spending their donations correctly and that they are in need of support.&nbsp;When it comes to finding new beneficiaries, obviously they all need to have some kind of maritime connection, and all of them come from the members of the industry that attend our events. Whether it's a friend receiving support from a charity, or a local foundation that is doing some good out on the water, we receive many suggestions and make sure that we evaluate them all. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289062/image/large-a557991c6ace37efaf72e3e8f64cd757.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289062">Next week the next event takes place, the Golf Event in Palma, can you share some more details of the day?We have 140 players out on the green over the course of the day, playing in pairs with the first group setting off at 8am. The second group will begin after lunch, which is a Spanish style tapas meal served at the golf course. Throughout the day there will be a bar open at the club, with two additional bars on the green itself, as well as a coffee buggy driving around serving coffees and espresso martinis.&nbsp;In the evening there will be a Spanish style barbecue, with DJ music and drinks at the club, so all in all its going to be a great day out. There will also be a small auction during dinner with five prizes and the beneficiaries are two local charities; Yachting Gives Back and Shambala plus this year we are helping promote Open Arms who will separately receive some funding from our Cash 4 Causes fund. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289061/image/large-cf77b2c5c5c6c29cb7b2a13b6af0a129.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289061">Finally, what would you say is the biggest motivation for professionals to attend the events?&nbsp;The events offer a great opportunity to network of course, but the entire goal of everything Superyacht Charities creates is to raise money for charity and that is at the heart of what we do. Our clients and attendees are superyacht crew, small companies and people that support the industry and want to do good.
