Today's customers are gravitating toward more relaxed and protected ways of cruising. The explorer market segment, which is constantly evolving, responds exactly to that need. Creating a central superstructure that can be fully enclosed for protection or opened up via sliding doors, roof, and aft windows required innovative engineering solutions to maintain structural integrity while delivering seamless indoor-outdoor flow.&nbsp;Equally challenging was balancing the superstructure construction with serious offshore capability. We needed to achieve agility and efficiency, while ensuring the vessel could handle demanding sea conditions. Evolving from a small-scale operation into a multi-service organisation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MennYacht Group (Company)">MennYacht Group</a> has come a long way since its creation in 1994. Still presided over by the original founder Matjaž Murko today, the company now represents several brands of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> and operates across various Central and Eastern European countries, with a strong presence along the Adriatic coast.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328602/image/large-f0b53309825f90cea989c7c504d55069.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328602">What led to your entry into the yachting industry?I was born in Germany and moved to Slovenia in 1972 when I was ten years old. Shortly thereafter, I joined a well-known sailing club in Slovenia named Pirate. From a young age, I exhibited an entrepreneurial spirit; my first venture was founding a windsurfing school with a friend, catering to tourists on the beach. It's important to note the geographic significance of Slovenia, which is bordered by Italy to the west and Croatia to the south and east. Slovenia attracts many visitors from the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries. Additionally, our linguistic similarities foster a welcoming environment for these tourists.This early experience further fueled my interest in the nautical industry, which prompted me to explore additional opportunities. My breakthrough came at the Genoa Boat Show in 1994, where I discovered the Pershing brand. Just a few months later, I signed a contract with the shipyard and acquired two yachts, a 60-footer and a 70-footer and began actively promoting Pershing in the Adriatic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328599/image/large-fe3e86a9dd94651ebd8b14f1582ea966.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328599">Could you elaborate on your close ties with various Ferretti Group brands and how it came to be that you represented them?In 1998, following <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>'s acquisition by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>, Pershing recommended us as a dealer for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> brands in Austria, Slovenia, and other parts of Europe. We promptly signed the contract and officially started our dealership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a> in 2000. As the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> expanded and integrated brands such as Riva, we also began representing them in our markets.Currently, we represent all <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> brands, except for CRN and Wally, across several regions. Our markets include Austria, Germany (specifically clients in the Adriatic region for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Yachts (Company)">Ferretti Yachts</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/584" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pershing S.p.a. (Company)">Pershing</a>, and Itama), the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania. Over the past twenty years, these countries have seen economic development, though they still face certain challenges. Despite our wide geographic reach, we encounter specific local preferences. In Hungary for example, there is a strong preference for conducting business in Hungarian. As a result we maintain an office in Budapest to accommodate this need, despite its landlocked location. We also have an office in Prague, Czech Republic, and one in Belgrade, Serbia. These different locations allow us to offer bespoke services, adapted to the local business culture.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328598/image/large-821263695bb15703bea192a6f86d08b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328598">What strategies did MennYacht employ to successfully expand into Eastern European marketsFrom the outset, establishing comprehensive services was crucial, encompassing not only yacht sales but also dedicated maintenance and support. When operations began, back in 1994, sourcing essential components such as generator impellers posed significant challenges. Damage to an impeller could disable the entire generator, disrupting critical onboard functions, including cooking, yet obtaining these components was complicated by supply distribution issues. Indeed, Slovenia and Croatia were not part of the European Union at that time, leading to intricate customs and logistics scenarios.To address these challenges, we significantly expanded our service network, which now covers all major marinas and key cruising locations along the Adriatic coast. Thanks to our local network and expertise, we are known for our rapid response times, a fact acknowledged by our clients and competitors alike.Our team comprises highly experienced professionals, some of whom have been with us for 15-20 years. With the increasing complexity of yachts due to advanced technology and design features, it is imperative to stay at the forefront of service excellence. In collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti</a>, we have played a crucial role in providing ongoing educational programs for our workers, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet contemporary challenges.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328604/image/large-97e4aaf81a00cf9ce7c98bb81c584023.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328604"> How do events contribute to the MennYacht brand and client engagement?Alongside our 30th anniversary celebrations, we hosted significant events such as the Gala Yacht Ball and Summer Breeze at Ravni Zakan. These occasions allow us to engage deeply with our clientele in a setting that highlights both our latest offerings and our rich legacy. Moreover, we hosted a similar event last year where we invited all our clients and provided entertainment with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Technohull (Company)">Technohull</a> luxury RIBs, for which we are also the official regional dealers.These events, along with our yearly magazine and our 30th anniversary book, significantly enhance client engagement. Crucially, they also provide us with deeper insights into our clients' perspectives, such as whether they are considering acquiring a new yacht because their current one is becoming outdated or too small. To be successful in today's market, it is not enough to be a dealer; a 360-degree approach is required.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/328597/image/large-1a06b306801dedc5024d56cc19d873f5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/328597"> Any future plans you would like to unveil?In recent years, we've significantly advanced our marketing efforts, collaborating with media companies and promoting our 30th anniversary. Despite these successes, we recognise areas that require further improvement.Currently, like many in the industry, we face a shortage of skilled labour, particularly mechanics and electricians. The growth of our fleet has outpaced our staffing capabilities, highlighting the critical need to balance the number of yachts with employee recruitment to enhance our operations.Moreover, we have been improving our technological capabilities by investing in software programs that aim to more efficiently understand the yachts clients desire. This will better facilitate our sales strategies and improve our ability to track client inquiries and preferences. For instance, if a client expressed interest in a specific type of superyacht a year ago, these new systems will allow us to process that information more quickly and accurately. We have a dedicated team, much like a family, where each member, including my son, plays a crucial role. Together, we are committed to continuing our legacy for many more years to come. It is not unusual, when speaking with yacht owners, to find that very few spend more than a few weeks a year aboard their yacht, even now when superyachts are able to double as home offices and many have impressive autonomous capabilities. One couple that bucks that trend however, are the owners of the 40-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>, who enjoy, not a few weeks, but almost a week per month for the entire Mediterranean summer aboard their semi-custom <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. We recently sat down with the owners to hear more about the customisations made to their yacht, including the embroidered panels made by a collective of Vietnamese women, their love of adventure and passion for cruising in Croatia. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181215/image/large-c194f92d6c46f8bb1d84ce81077ad125.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181215">Tell us about your history with yachts and how you came to build a superyacht?Husband: It all started with our love of being in nature. Being outside reminds us of our place in the world and being on the water is really the epitome of the outdoors experience – enjoying the day from sunrise to sunset, swimming in the sea and exploring hidden islands. That passion drove us to our first yacht charters more than 15 years ago aboard 55 foot motor yachts, but we were always disappointed that by 2pm captains and crew wanted to leave the anchorages and head into port.&nbsp;We didn't get into chartering to sit stern-to in marinas. We wanted to wake up in private bays and jump straight into the water, but the crew had other priorities – which we also understood. We realised that to really have that autonomy and to go where we wanted to go, we needed our own yacht, so in 2010 we bought a 26-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> in Croatia, which was the moment we met Captain Boris and Chief stewardess Nicky, who are still with us today.Wife: Croatia became our second love and really offered us everything we could want in a yachting destination. By 2016 we were spending weeks at a time aboard and that experience really taught us what we loved (and didn’t love), eventually leading to the decision to build our own dream yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/112577/image/large-c7aa374fb8078904f134f0fc0589f639.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/112577">So in 2017 you acquired an in-build semi-custom&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>&nbsp;Classic Supreme 132, later to become&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>, can you share some of those unique customisations?Husband: For us the sundeck is the best place to be throughout the year, with the great views and best sunshine. Most superyachts feature an open sundeck, but because we start using the yacht in April and continue through to October, it can get windy and chilly so we decided instead to close the central section to create a protected area which is unique for this series. It’s been such a success because it made that deck a lot more versatile and usable, and with heaters inside you have a great spot to sit whatever the weather. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181246/image/large-1cb99dcb8ba2dc6b9894edbe6fcd7007.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181246">The second thing is that most yachts have at least one dining table on every deck, as well as in the main saloon, but for us this just seemed like an unnecessary use of space. We decided instead to use the middle deck as a sporty, fun space where we could play games with friends and entertain. We had a self-levelling pool table and a foosball table made, added a bar with beer taps and this is the space that we use all the time when onboard – whether it's just the two of us or we have friends and it is also loved by our charter guests.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181233/image/large-10201c7c7d050b0f815cdfc433b1f15b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181233">Did you have charter guests in mind when you were designing the yacht, particularly as you designed the interiors yourselves?Wife: It was our dream to create an active boat where we could have fun, so these choices were really personal decisions for us, but it happens that they are also loved by charter guests, especially because she is quite unusual. The most important thing for us was to create a space that felt like home, whereas most boats are fairly neutral in their interior design but we wanted to add our spirit to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181236/image/large-911583c9ebfedd2ab95c636e65639637.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181236">I worked hard on her design because it was important to create something visually beautiful, but that fit with our life. We spent a long time considering the material choices, to make sure she was robust enough to withstand quite a bit of use, but also so that the crew had an easy experience with the boat. We really didn’t want to come aboard and spend our time worrying about spilling things on the floor, so the balance between beauty and functionality was very important.Husband: The interior configuration is also very tailored to our lifestyle, with the formal main saloon and then the more informal and entertainment area above. We have also created a massage room on the middle deck and have two therapists within the crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181240/image/large-fc551d86e69603f996acf976f05f7b3c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181240">Can you tell us a bit about the embroidery panels that adorn many of the spaces?Wife: I am half Vietnamese and I travel there often for work on a foundation that I run, alongside my husband. This embroidery technique is deeply embedded in Vietnamese culture and over the years I have much admired the artistry of the work. During one trip some years ago I visited the women who created these panels and spent some days with them learning about their craft and I was deeply inspired by their commitment to their work. It takes around 10 years to qualify in this technique, but if they want to create a face, it is another five years of training. This is something truly unique and I wanted to share this heritage with our friends and the charter guests, so perhaps they can also be inspired by this incredible work. And actually even the embroidery materials have been specially selected for their resilience to salty air to protect them while onboard the yacht!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314699/image/large-fb768483a6ea8a39b4ee22c94c5a53a4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314699">What does a normal day onboard&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>&nbsp;look like for you and your guests? Husband: We really use every part of this yacht, moving from deck to deck throughout the day and even sitting on the observation foredeck when cruising at night and taking in the stars. We love to listen to classical music in the main saloon, and rock music on the middle deck, while the sundeck is where we spend most of our time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181247/image/large-2a725a2994f7c682a170ed38bc4de39a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181247">We also have the full spectrum of tenders and toys, including a 12-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Technohull (Company)">Technohull</a> Explorer 40 tender with two Yamaha 425 hp engines that we tow behind the yacht. We decided to go for a proper tender so that we can explore hidden bays during the day, pick up guests from beaches safely and easily and tow wakeboards and water skis. We also have two of everything you could need for fun on the water; Jet Skis, e-foils, kayaks and eight bikes (just to name a few). In July, two of Australia’s most prominent yachting companies announced a powerhouse merger. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy Club</a>, the superyacht charter and brokerage firm and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ray White Marine (Company)">Ray White Marine</a>, the sales and management company have joined forces, to utilise one another’s specialities and expand their reach into new sectors. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ray White Marine (Company)">Ray White Marine’s</a> Brock Rodwell has taken over from his father Rick as CEO, and has joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy Club</a> as Head of Sales for Asia Pacific. Francesca Webster finds out more:&nbsp;How did the recent merger with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy</a>&nbsp;come about?We’ve worked alongside <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy</a> for over a decade, often engaged in negotiations related to buying and selling boats and the merger has developed from that long standing relationship.Last year <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy</a> approached us with the idea of expanding their operations beyond charter management and into boat sales. Whilst <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy</a> had a successful start in the charter business and later ventured into management services, they had not been actively focusing on the sales element of this business. This arrangement allows us to maintain our individual identities while benefiting from a strong collaboration. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ray White Marine (Company)">Ray White Marine</a> would bring their expertise in boat sales, whilst <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy</a> would continue to excel in charter and management services.The timing also couldn't have been better as I found myself elevated to the position of CEO after my father’s retirement the opportunity allowed for a seamless transition of leadership.How do you hope this new partnership will impact the two businesses and does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ray White Marine (Company)">Ray&nbsp;White</a>&nbsp;intend to remain distinct?The new partnership creates a powerful synergy, with each business complimenting the others’. The White family, specifically Brian and Dan White had a positive and supportive involvement in the new stage of the merger with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy club</a>. As a privately owned family-run company, they respected the decision-making process of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ray White Marine (Company)">Ray White Marine</a>. The conversation about the merger was straightforward, given the mutual respect and trust built over the years. Buying a yacht is different from purchasing property or commercial real estate online; it involves personal preferences, views, and locations. Hosting in-person auctions aligns with our brokerage model, offering a distinctive avenue for buyers and sellers. Contrary to the misconception that auctions are only for repossessions or distress sales, they serve as an alternative method to traditional brokerage or online listings, garnering broader coverage and encouraging sellers to participate. Ian Malouf, owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy Club</a>, has included a number of his yachts in this auction, firstly to see if the structure of the auctions is successful and secondly with the view to potentially expand his operating fleet.&nbsp;Moreover, the post-COVID market has seen some changes, prompting a few listings to explore different selling methods. By combining several boats in the auction, we make advertising more cost-effective, distributing it across multiple vessels rather than focusing on individual ads.Running the auction alongside the Sydney Boat Show provides us with a captive audience, considering its close proximity. It's essential to clarify that while it coincides with the boat show, it's not a part of the event itself. Additionally, we'll participate in significant brokerage shows like Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach, where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ahoy Club (Company)">Ahoy</a> also usually has a presence. Furthermore, we intend to be at shows in Monaco and Dubai as well, casting a wide net to cover all major opportunities.Our focus at these overseas boat shows will be on showcasing new production boats for sale in Australia and New Zealand, exclusively to Australian and New Zealand passport holders. This ensures we respect territorial boundaries and adhere to specific policies.
