The brief was to create a superyacht that was more energy efficient and emitted less carbon than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>’s ground-breaking hybrid yacht, Savannah. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/279670/image/large-99016099025a20c32bf6b3f4565b3487.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/279670"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10316" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Obsidian84.2m (276'3&quot;)Feadship2023">Obsidian</a> showcases a low and slim hull design which has been optimised for cruising speed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). At anchor, the batteries will also provide silent operation for 10-15 hours.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/279666/image/large-1d7d2d9bf053deae89d3e2b0d9558519.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/279666">&nbsp;When analysing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10316" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Obsidian84.2m (276'3&quot;)Feadship2023">Obsidian</a> using the YETI tool, it revealed that about 60 percent of the energy consumed goes simply to powering the onboard lifestyle. This transports thermal energy (heat) from one place to another and according to Jongepier, it is five times more efficient than simply making heat with a regular electrical heating coil. She features an asymmetrical atrium staircase, which leads to a lower deck dining saloon, with an entire wall that opens to provide a terrace view that is just 75cm above sea level.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/279656/image/large-3e5c07aa7a72beaa9799ab16a7ff6630.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/279656">None of the interior rooms, except her staterooms, have any 90-degree angles. The Aqua Lounge can also function as a cinema and even a classroom. Four fast charging stations installed by the yard will allow them to be charged in the water or in the tender garage.

Feadship delivers 84m superyacht Obsidian

Feadship has announced the delivery of the 84m yacht Obsidian, the first in a new generation of yachts aimed at further reducing carbon emissions. 

Feadship delivers 84m ‘carbon-reducing’ superyacht Obsidian

One of the most intriguing smaller boats to debut at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2022">Cannes Yachting Festival</a> was the Vandal Explorer, a 14-metre all-aluminium tender. Styled by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> – best known for having designed some of the biggest superyachts on the water – and based on a foil-assisted catamaran platform by Canadian <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scott Hollers Jutson (Company)">Scott Jutson</a>, the concept originated with industry veteran Ben Mennem.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241010/image/large-bd49a0870ce82f5000db8677361d2da8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241010">“I’d been planning to build a boat like this for myself for five or six years,” says Mennem. “I wanted it to be of aluminium because it wasn’t worth tooling the moulds for a one-off; I wanted outboards so they can come out of water when not in use; and I wanted it to be as simple as possible.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241003/image/large-5c6cfba2bf6ecf28094354151dc33041.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241003">Mennem already owned an 8.5-metre RIB with foils and went to his old friend <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Scott Hollers Jutson (Company)">Scott Jutson</a> to create the catamaran configuration based on the same principle. A discussion with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Club de Monaco (Company)">Monaco Yacht Club</a> led to the Norwegian designer agreeing to take on the styling of the topsides. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241210/image/large-88f69478718abacdd713a9add37e853b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241210">“In a way, it’s the antithesis of what we normally deal with,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>, “but I loved the simplicity of it, the idea of really going back to basics and thinking about what you need and don’t need on a boat of this size.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241006/image/large-2054c737a3cd6a9425d23838be184a19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241006">Both Mennem and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> own Land Rover Defenders and the robust, functional design of the classic off-roader informed the design of the Vandal Explorer with its flat aluminium panels, chunky wrap-around fender and rugged handrails. The focus is on space and practicality rather than luxurious frills. The tender is launched by a simple, removable derrick and to avoid additional wiring there is no sound system on board.&nbsp;“If you want music, use a portable Bluetooth system,” says Mennem. “This is all about ‘glamping’ on the water!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241011/image/large-80fb23fd05c2f02db230f7064fc7ec9e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241011">Built by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6860" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tenderworks (Company)">Tenderworks</a> team in the Netherlands, which has long experience of building custom tenders and chase boats for superyachts, Mennem and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> each own a Vandal Explorer and both put their respective boats through their paces in the Mediterranean this summer.“I have over 150 hours on the engines now after cruising between Capri, Naples and the Amalfi coast,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>. “I can testify first-hand to the performance and comfort, and it’s great fun to drive. My experience this summer showed me that simplicity works every time. Sabrina, my wife, was sceptical at first – she was the one who christened the boat Bruttino, Italian for a bit ugly – but she and the kids are totally into it now.”“Critical to the initial concept was being able do the big jumps in the Med, say from Marseille to Alcúdia in Mallorca or Mahon to northern Sardinia,” says Mennem. “To do that you need the speed and range, but also the performance even in quite rough seas, which is where the asymmetric hulls and foils come in.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241008/image/large-13219f997c558d0360aef5cf0ecf5244.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241008">The catamaran platform is well proven by workboats all over the world, often in extreme conditions. Powered by twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5777" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yamaha (Company)">Yamaha</a> XTO 425 hp engines, the passive foils carry 35 percent of the boat’s weight, reducing fuel consumption by 25 percent while providing a range of up to 240 nautical miles. They also give a smoother ride, less spray, enhanced stability and better top performance with a redline speed of 40 knots or more.Designed to function as a weekend runabout, fishing boat, dive boat, superyacht chase boat or explorer tender, the Vandal Explorer has a six to eight person dining area, a double cabin forward, aft deck rain shower, interior day head with additional shower, a well-appointed outdoor galley and plenty of lounging areas, also on the flybridge. Menem’s boat includes a self-draining deck locker to take a couple of mountain bikes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241007/image/large-fc29a897185048c6c89e5163271478f1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241007">“Sustainability was another consideration during the design,” adds <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a>. “Recycled aluminium is used in the construction and improved fuel efficiency means fewer emissions, but we also use silicon anti-fouling, solar panels on the flybridge and there’s an onboard incinerator to avoid black water discharge. We don’t even have AC on board and rely on strategically placed windows or hatches for natural ventilation, like the old wind scoops you see on classic yachts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241009/image/large-a81f919f50273535db5b65d58ba532ae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241009">For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Øino</a> the Vandal Explore is part of an ambitious personal project as he plans to cruise the entire Norwegian coastline along the Skagerrak, North Sea, Norwegian Sea and Barents Sea &nbsp;from Sweden to the Russian border &nbsp;in a similar vessel, perhaps equipped with hybrid or electric propulsion. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241017/image/large-033bf66cf1f71f46060b5988ec5d7bb1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241017">
