With a territory as big as Western Europe, yet of which 99 percent is water, French Polynesia is truly a unique charter destination. Its islands are divided into three groups: the youngest islands that emerged from the Ocean and have little-to-no shallow waters; the ‘middle age’ islands, where the islands have slightly sunk, thereby gaining a reef; and the oldest islands that have completely sunk underwater but rest close enough to the surface for visitors to take a stroll or enjoy snorkelling in shallow waters. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/383752/image/large-bd7b829ac518c02ae1360edddf73c9eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/383752">Speaking with Manoa Rey, Research and Niche Marketing Coordinator for the Tahiti Tourism Board, he notes that Tahiti “is really somewhere you can disconnect and it’s accessible year-round. There is no terrorism, no piracy and you won’t be chased by paparazzi.” With a current visiting fleet of 50-60 superyachts per year, Manoa is eager to grow the number of annual visitors. When Cyclone Alfred was bearing down on the Gold Coast, we were undercover, with the vessel protected and once given the all clear, work resumed without missing a beat.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/363514/image/large-d3949133af708b0098403e5445aac45c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/363514">The vessel was securely sheltered within her own dedicated 100-metre chute and benefitted from full scaffold coverage and easy access. Crane operations ran smoothly, while the extra-wide pontoons provided ample space for painters and their equipment during the transformation of her dark grey exterior to a fresh white superstructure and light grey hull.With a 10-metre beam and a volume of 746 GT, she showcases expansive decks, a large garage for water toys and tenders and a helipad, establishing her as a “go-anywhere” superyacht.“It’s well-built and well-maintained,” Juan explained. “The steel hull is 10-millimetres throughout and there was no corrosion.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/363513/image/large-bfc0e7cc1887e2bd8b23c8b93a812ec4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/363513">The project began with the vessel being stripped back to bare metal, followed by a full overhaul. This included a fresh exterior respray and a complete redesign, led by a naval architect, to ensure full compliance with both Class and Flag regulations.Next came the fabrication of the interior spaces. All six guest staterooms, along with lounges, corridors and bathrooms, underwent complete refurbishment, which required new furnishings, flooring, glazing and lighting. This step was crucial to rebuild the yacht into a five-star charter-ready motor yacht capable of global cruising, according to Juan.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/363515/image/large-f32abdb2b4af2da649fab49dfe873d48.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/363515">Moreover, on-site glazing specialists <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2867" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Integrated Marine Group (Company)">Integ Marine</a> Windows created an enclosed ‘glass house’ with sliding doors on the bridge deck. They also replaced the original windows with larger panes to enhance natural light and provide sweeping panoramic views to guests onboard. Currently work is underway on brand new supersheds, with the addition of 50 percent more sheds and hardstand for improved boat maintenance and to meet the increasing refit demand.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294377/image/large-3942536aff821e70fdc046d91da7d413.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294377"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a>’ owner, Tony Longhurst commented on the expansion, “The development of major marine infrastructure marks a substantial step forward in our commitment to providing top-notch services to our valued clients”.&nbsp;Four years after opening, the Northern Superyard will shortly welcome new supersized sheds. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a> expansion will see the addition of 10 new 18-metres in height and 42-metres in length refit sheds, offering year-round weathering protection. The first of the sheds are currently open and the remaining nine are set to be prepared for visiting vessels in early 2024, joining the 70 already in operation onsite.Reflecting on the importance of this development Tony stated, “We are proud to provide the most sheds for any boat yard in the Southern Hemisphere. The benefits of undertaking work in sheds cannot be overstated. This space will be equipped with full power and recycled water for boat maintenance.&nbsp;General Manager, Shane Subichin reflected on the designated “task-specific zones” which will be set up to cater to each aspect of boat maintenance and refit: “With these new work allocations, we anticipate a smoother workflow allowing us to meet and exceed the expectations of our clients in terms of delivery and quality.”The Dock 2 is set to be the final stage of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a>’ expansion, including new offices and professional business suites overlooking the marina. “We are laying foundations for The Dock 2. The Australian refit and maintenance yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a> has expanded its capacity with a new 90-tonne travel lift. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a> now has five machines operating over both yards, lifting every type of vessel up to 300-tonnes. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271396/image/large-262e69762e3293cdea5ebb23c818e1a5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271396">“To keep pace with demand, we decided to invest in this variable width, all-wheel drive machine,” &nbsp;explained <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a> owner, Tony Longhurst. “It has an adjustable beam width narrowing the vessels footprint from 8 metres down to 5.5 metres allowing &nbsp;the team to maximise the vessel set down footprint. This is brilliant for boat storage as we can go &nbsp;narrow for the narrower runways and use it for packing boats in tight spots.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271403/image/large-7b2678db6b2f3538e335970d91427a01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271403">Built in Italy, the machine boasts unique Dynamic Steering Control (DSC), which its manufacturer defines as “allowing seamless transfer between 4 modes with infinite adjustment between each to allow &nbsp;progressive adjustment of the radius of rotation”. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271400/image/large-ef3dbdd75e8fce9694a90fd655441dc6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271400">DSC is an innovative steering management system developed by Boat Lift. This system allows an operator to linearly move the axis of rotation in any position between the axis of the front wheels and the rear wheels. This makes it possible to significantly reduce the manoeuvring space required for the handling and storage of boats. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/271399/image/large-b8c8cfd255ccd65151a343b3828635b2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/271399">The new 90-tonne Boat Lift is currently undergoing commissioning and will be ready to haul-out boats in June 2023. “The new Boat Lift gives us more flexibility, makes us more efficient and gives owners more &nbsp;options,” said Tony Longhurst. “We can lift wide multihulls and monohulls, and we can lift a lot more boats now. Further expansion to cater for superyachts is about to go underway on the Gold Coast, Australia. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5437" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Boat Works (Company)">The Boat Works</a> will commence the next stage of major construction within its Superyacht Yard imminently. Developing ‘Simply the Best’ destination for boat refit and maintenance.”The expansion plans will be completed mid-2023 and coincides with the welcoming of a new 90-tonne lift. The Italian-built Boat Lift is the first of its kind to be located in Australia. The Boat Works will commence the next stage of major construction within its Superyacht Yard imminently.
