Amongst the quiet flats and meandering waterways of northern Netherlands exists a lively hub of creativity - the studio of yacht design company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>. Established in 1961, with over 7,400 vessels currently cruising the world bearing their credentials, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> is renowned for creating designs underpinned by smart, effective naval architecture and a can-do Dutch attitude.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/56141/image/large-5e5f2907cda4c8e388e2d56b550f0a6f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/56141">Sitting down with Bart Bouwhuis, one half of the driving force behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, we quickly begin talking shop, unravelling the concept of the ambiguous explorer, and comparing tips on how best to recover from an exhausting week at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. “Monaco was vibrant. There is a lot more to come from us,” he says. Trained as naval architects and having been in the company for over a decade, it’s not hard to believe. Since taking the reins from Dick Boon, who founded the company in 1961, Bart and joint owner/Co-Creative Director Marnix Hoekstra have helped to mould <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> into a complete one-stop-shop design house.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/56142/image/large-850cd453556d4aef816a0ba315d6579d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/56142">Since <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/13" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">Monaco</a>, the two have kept themselves busy with an exclusive launch planned for the 2018 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/14" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2018">Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show</a>. “The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/YachtModel/8081" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nordhavn 8023.98m (78'8&quot;)">Nordhavn 80</a> has a similar look and feel inside as M5,” revealed Bart.M5 is a 37.7-metre explorer yacht concept developed for a South American owner and his family who all enjoy a sportive outdoor lifestyle. “By creating this explorer concept, we also explored new ways of developing a new boat, we made it a fun and enjoyable process for the whole family.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/56144/image/large-0e8cb75f9f80a6fdc4d4f8f986c9c644.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/56144">The interior for M5 had very humble beginnings on the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> drawing boards. “We typically work with three drivers which connect to the brand, the client and the lifestyle. We selected home, safety and comfort for this project. There are a lot of natural materials for comfort, and this is an interior style we really like because it is very homely, offers lots of light, and it’s pleasant. When we develop explorers, we are committed to making all those on board feel at home at sea,” explains Bart.&nbsp;The organic and traditional pen-and-paper methods of design will most probably never cease to exist, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> is doing things a little differently. Bart and Marnix have bigger and better ideas on how best to communicate, explore and make their ideas a reality for their clients. “We have been exploring with virtual reality for three years now,” Bart states, excitedly. Together with the innovative Floridian brand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The New Yachts Company (Company)">The New Yachts Company</a>, at this year’s <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2018">MYS</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> put that work into motion, inviting guests to experience their 50-metre concept, Maharani in virtual reality.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/56143/image/large-f347be7e46babe02e369203c8b926b28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/56143">“It fascinates me how technology has advanced so far but we still use traditional methods,” Bart explains as he gets the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> HQ’s VR ‘cave’ hooked up to present Maharani. When looking at a detailed printed render the outcome is reliant on the extent of the client’s imagination, but through the use of VR, it is possible to envisage exactly how one would look, travel and live onboard. “It’s a super valuable tool!” Bart continues. “In the beginning, people were a bit unsure, but it’s a new way to present. It is not replacing the old way with the GA, the visuals and the mock-up. You still use all those things, plus the fabrics and samples, but being able to let the client walk through the room and experience the layout and the size in VR - wow! You are adding a component of very little cost and lead time which adds a whole new experience. In refits, it is also interesting as the clients are familiar with their surroundings, and they know they are sat on their deck, but can see the difference.”Walking through Maharani the full upper main deck is intriguing. “Stand at one end and you can see straight down the whole deck,” Bart explains whilst we wander through the virtual yacht. With the aim of the design centred around the human experience, all 10 guest areas are connected to the beach area, with the second deck dedicated to the owner for ultimate privacy and space. While continuing to push the boundaries of design, Bart explains how in a new project with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>, they have designed the engine room in the front of the vessel, followed by the crew quarters, the guests, and the beach club. “We have put function in the front and the fun part in the back. Isn’t that so much more sensible? There are no technical limitations! The engine room can work just as well in the front as in the back. Clients love it - &nbsp;especially young clients who have chartered a lot and are familiar with yachting and understand the value of an open plan layout and having everyone together.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45821/image/large-48469e7a73d05d591503c9fb039a3aca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45821">By exploring new ways of presenting projects, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> team are striving to educate their clients. “There is a big role for the industry to educate. We need to, and the client deserves to be.” As the somewhat traditional superyacht industry is “really reluctant to move ahead,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> is making a conscious effort to encourage owners to invest in eco-friendly designs and not just be conscious of what the industry is expelling into the environment, but also what it is taking away. “We are experimenting with bamboo! It is a great material, it grows very fast, so it’s very cheap. We are using it for furniture and decking. As designers and architects, we need to stay ahead to educate and bring these new materials, plus the pros and cons to our clients.”&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45820/image/large-723739c0091dd31c180bf11c8b5930ec.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45820">Other areas where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> is thinking outside of the box and responding to their clients is evident in the 88-metre superyacht project, Utopia - a unique custom concept. “We have a client who has invented an air purifying system which is able to reduce the Co2 levels by 80-90%. We are experimenting with connecting that to a diesel engine allowing us to be super, super environmentally friendly. It’s going really well! It’s breathtaking - literally - because the system is very simple, it doesn't require maintenance or expensive filters.” The mission for the project was established after being approached by a very eco-conscious client who wanted to eliminate the most pressing environmental problems relating to yachts - waste. The diesel generators of Utopia are connected to an exhaust system and purifying chambers that feed the yacht’s exhausts into the onboard garden, allowing for the plants to take care of the yacht’s remaining Co2 waste. The Utopia concept is a traditional yacht design, with the capabilities of an explorer vessel that has been taken to the next level - a level which may not remain just a concept in the future.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45826/image/large-9e13c73c567332eaec5a88de69cfe010.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45826">Those in the yacht industry who have the power to apply and invest innovations in technology is what will help the industry move forward. Concepts such as M5 and Utopia exist to push the boundaries of yacht design, capabilities and category - such as the explorer yacht. “People think exploring is travelling through ice and seeing penguins. But that’s the great thing, exploring is different for everyone. What we like is developing a new boat that isn’t necessarily what you think of an ‘’explorer’’ yacht - but it’s a fantastic way of exploring. The development process with the use of VR is also an expedition. 9/10 times we start with a conversation and a brief, and 9/10 times we end up bringing something different to the board. We ask deeper questions and find that there’s another layer to explore. Insight: Exploring the future with Vripack

As one of its largest projects completed in recent years following the delivery of the 70-metre, 1,139-GT motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5603" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galactica Super Nova70.07m (229'11&quot;)">Galactica Supernova</a> in 2016, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a> may be based on Heesen Yachts’ trusted 55-metre platform but she is no ordinary spec-build project. At 740 GT she is also one of the Dutch shipyard’s largest yachts ever and with a last-minute (just weeks ahead of the scheduled launch) acquisition by an experienced owner, she soon also turned into one of the most intensive builds. We speak to the design house behind her interior, Radyca, about the special features inside <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a>.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53363/image/large-43c0862568986ca4ace67a8de2acaaae.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53363"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53373/image/large-9525fa491db06f6374ef5db5bad8a886.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53373">With construction having begun in early 2015 as Project Alida (<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia’s</a> code name during the build), the project was following Heesen’s strict build timeline for over two years as one of its speculation projects. It was only in March 2017, some three months ahead of her eventual launch and subsequent delivery, that Barin Cardenas of The New Yacht Company and his client decided on Alida as his latest superyacht. What followed was an intense few months whereby Heesen was pushed to almost entirely restyle the interior and even tasked with some structural changes to the layout. Having accepted the challenge, Heesen’s production floor kicked in overdrive together with the oversight of Cardenas as project manager who acted as the new owner’s eyes and ears.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53383/image/large-441c2b33c2eb38f213f22331156f1721.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53383"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53379/image/large-e80d10519cce5f015cc7d782eace8f45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53379">As sistership to the 55-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4867" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azamanta55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Azamanta</a> from 2015, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia’s</a> core is developed by the same Dutch teams from Van Oossanen Naval Architects and Omega Architects who worked on her naval architecture and exterior design respectively together with Heesen’s team of designers and engineers. A powerful profile is further accentuated with aggressive styling cues in the hull and superstructure such as the signature shark-tooth elements aft of the wheelhouse and the racing stripe-like indents in the hull. A high freeboard and substantial superstructure that takes up a good part of the deck spaces give you the impression that this is not another sub-500 GT Heesen.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53361/image/large-1447d14e9d7bd658a32727ee123a6a18.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53361">Exterior spaces remained largely unchanged apart from the relocation of the pool on the forward part of the sundeck to facilitate lounging space. The rest of the deck is fitted with a central dining area covered by the T-top and an aft lounging area.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53380/image/large-b9a79079edc38418034962882aa7191d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53380">The decks below come with an owner’s breakfast area on the bridge deck aft and a more intimate welcoming lounge on the main aft deck that greets you as you board <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a> that transforms into a cosy outdoor cinema at night with a drop-down projector and screen and complimentary surround-sound.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53381/image/large-f963186e1c6738061b078310e7b78486.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53381"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53382/image/large-1880a0522c35258ddacea5ba36b74ada.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53382">For the restyling of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a> interior, her owner had to commision a studio with whom he was familiar with and who could keep up with the pace that was required in order to have the yacht delivery-ready by the summer of 2017. The Miami-based office Radyca fit this description perfectly and joined the rest of the project team from the very beginning. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/53375/image/large-9c57093aa5b18a9b841466e2d9feae6d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53375">With a nearly-complete Bannenberg &amp; Rowell interior fitted, the change to the interior focused more on the style of the decor to match that of her owner’s lifestyle, rather than alterations to the existing layout. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a> is the sixth superyacht project that we have successfully delivered,” comments Radyca, “and it was the most challenging of all because the task was to completely redo a fully finished interior and add some interesting exterior features like an outdoor cinema in only four months. This required an incredible level of commitment and dedication from everyone in the team.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53376/image/large-2d558228c39d28e477a9c8776b650992.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53376">The new style was to be lighter and more welcoming than what Alida already offered. The overall pallet remains a contrasting one, but now with far more emphasis on bright colours than before. “The concept behind the selected upholstery materials for all furniture in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Laurentia</a> was one of highest quality and comfort, continues the designer. “All fabrics, leather and suedes were carefully selected to enhance every piece of furniture.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53374/image/large-649279912667416882db177e75d8fdbc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53374">In the sky lounge, Heesen removed a secret crew passage to port in order to instal a massive mirror TV wall. This area is dedicated to relaxing and features a U-shaped sofa with freestanding oversized chairs and a bar setup looking out through the generous windows.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53377/image/large-7aedc937637e4ec83f7f6ac3ae10aeee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53377"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53372/image/large-0ddeddea7ab7398051cc63e49960420a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53372">In terms of accommodation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Laurentia</a> has six guest suites with the master suite being the largest and most lavish of them all. Placed forward on the main deck behind those large sequential hull windows so visible from the outside, the suite takes on the sophisticated and high-tech ambience of the rest of the interior. Bamboo-lined panels above the bed creates a soothing effect while another quirky pattern on the carpet reminds you that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a> is not all about business.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53370/image/large-4c031d665dc962cd094b581a1c5a9d21.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53370"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53369/image/large-9abd3ee0341af642923022641737d352.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53369"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53368/image/large-fa9f6739abe45ec731d7620d8e2357a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53368">Five additional cabins can be found on the lower deck for a total of 12 overnight guests. “Neutral to Earth tones were used in linens and cottons along with some speciality outdoor fabrics in deep blue tones for accents.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53365/image/large-d4763789d389bd4ca58d97804f1e42f7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53365"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53366/image/large-fe817e9fab4cdc4266e54ff331cbf2ef.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53366">Also on the lower deck are the crew quarters (forward) and a large beach club with gym equipment for guests to stay active while out of the office.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/53378/image/large-e966201815658fdd0eec53ada99aaea7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53378"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/53367/image/large-d175c17d1d195e3bf5082ace50952bab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53367">Built for blue water cruising, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5754" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Laurentia55.0m (180'5&quot;)">Laurentia</a> benefits from Van Oossanen’s slick FDHF hull form that forms the base for so many of Heesen’s projects. Superyacht of the Week: Laurentia

Vripack and The New Yachts Company have teamed up to create a bold new motor yacht project based on the pair’s innovative and pre-engineered Prime platform. Named Maharani, the new project challenges the conventional layout and arrangement of guest spaces associated with a vessel of this size by offering a variety of living options across all decks.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45830/image/large-c5a12965a0b60c7e27e968a824035f3e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45830">The centre of the yacht revolves around the owners and their family and the design team came up with a layout that ensures guest privacy on each deck through the use of internal structuring only found on larger yachts. By sacrificing interior space for extra deck space outside, and by keeping guest spaces minimalist in design, Maharani becomes the perfect platform for those wishing to stay connected with the surrounding ocean.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45821/image/large-48469e7a73d05d591503c9fb039a3aca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45821"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/45828/image/large-20afc66eb8a26960343e7f1d7c343f93.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45828">“If our industry is to attract new, younger owners, then we have to improve the owner experience without having to build a larger, more expensive yacht," says The New Yachts Company founder, Barin Cardenas. To achieve this, Vripack broke the main deck up into 10 separate spaces to accommodate several guests at once in comfort and without the feeling of hanging out in a shared space. These same design principles have been applied to the exterior with over ten dedicated external areas for guests to choose from.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45824/image/large-f942e24e5138ca7771a740d5516b34db.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45824"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/45826/image/large-9e13c73c567332eaec5a88de69cfe010.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45826">“From the layout, it’s obvious that each of these spaces has their own intimacy and function,” adds Bart Bouwhuis, co-Creative Director of Vripack. “This allows all family members to enjoy their own time on board while still being together all on one incredible deck stretching from stern to bow."<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45822/image/large-811b636ea41e89666f8571f07cbaca01.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45822">The interior style is modern but at the same time hyper-natural with the goal of creating a ‘warm home feeling’. "Being Dutch, we love to play with light," says Bart. "Sure, the huge windows play a significant role, but do not underestimate the relevance of selecting just the right balance of light absorbing and reflection materials."<img src="/uploads/store/photo/45825/image/large-f5efe6357a259bc34adda2f636e1835f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/45825">Loose furniture around the yacht creates a luxury penthouse effect that carries the natural tones of the surrounding flooring and even the artwork.
