Photo report: The Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin 2008

Despite threats of a tornado and serious downpours dampening the afternoon of the opening day of the 12th annual Superyacht Cup in Palma de Mallorca, the skippers came ashore safely, ready for action. Captains, owners and crew bosses of the thirteen vessels, which range this year from wooden marvel, 47m Scheherezade, to the much-heralded Senso One (former Mari-Cha IV) gathered on Christina O - chartered by the Ranger group - to hear all about the new Spanish insurance regulations governing yacht racing crews. This year, the fleet was separated into two classes, led initially by family style 'Anny' taking first place across the start line, followed by a special IRC performance class of six speedier vessels taking the line in one go after their fellow racers – this included Royal Huisman's Gliss, and Hyperion, joined by Dubois designed Ganesha, Wally Open Season, colorful Scorpione dei Mare, and Marten Yachts Nimrod making her Superyacht Cup debut. The Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin: A perfect first race day

Sales, technical and service staff from Ocean Yacht Systems (OYS) will enjoy a high profile presence at the ‘biggest and longest-running Superyacht event in the world’, the Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin Palma, taking place from the 11th to 14th June 2008 at Dique del Oeste, Palma de Majorca. At this year’s event no less than 60% of the current entry list are yachts rigged with either rod, composite or hydraulic OYS products. Statistics such as these, however, are rarely surprising, when you consider that since 1997 well over 300 of the world’s largest and most prestigious sailing yachts have been equipped with bespoke OYS rigging systems. Installing a bespoke new rigging system on a powerful, modern Superyacht is not entirely where the story ends. Failure to inspect and service both the easy and the not so easily accessible parts of a rig is a risky business, and a practice that should be avoided at all costs. That’s why at this year’s Cup, OYS Service Manager, Paul Russell and fellow staff, will be promoting the benefits of the OYS Service Programme. The scheme was conceived out of the need to maintain and regularly service a yacht’s rigging, seen as paramount to improving performance, value, longevity and preserving the safety of guests and crew. Participating yachts have their maintenance history recorded in a dedicated RigLog, which is safely stored back at the OYS head office. This information is continually updated at each service interval, so that, logically, the most appropriate and efficient future service and maintenance intervals for each yacht can be calculated. This active and flexible programme can be tailored around the needs of each individual skipper and boat, and utilises only approved members of the OYS worldwide service network to carry out any inspections and remedial work. The service can even be extended to caring for yachts which have not been fitted with OYS products from the outset. On the popularity of the scheme Paul adds: “In these changing times, busy skippers running large and complex Superyachts have more than enough regulatory and legislative issues to worry about. Our scheme has become popular by effectively relieving them of any short or long term concerns over their yacht’s rig and servicing. In some cases, parts renewal and maintenance can even be carried out from existing service records, without prior need to visit the boat.” The OYS Service Programme is widely regarded as the original and the most comprehensive scheme within this specialist sector, offering yachts a truly worldwide service. This year alone, over 22 yachts over 40m length have already been serviced and maintained under this scheme.

OYS staff out in force at 12th Superyacht Cup Ulysee Nardin

The 140' (42m) schooner Senso One (formerly Mari Cha IV) has confirmed they will be taking part in The Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin in Palma next month. Senso One will be the fastest boat ever to take part in a Superyacht Cup event. Senso One has two 45 metre masts but weighs only 50 tonnes due to a lightweight, sleek carbon-fibre hull which contains a stripped-out and minimalist interior. This is a complete contrast to some of the luxurious staterooms onboard several of the other participating yachts. “We are delighted to have Senso One participate at The Superyacht Cup” commented Event Director Patrick Whetter, “the response to our new IRC class has been very positive this year and we expect the fleet to grow significantly for the future.” Formerly called Mari Cha IV, Senso One still holds the Transatlantic record for a monohull, crossing from New York to Lizard point in just over 6 days. Capable of speeds of over 40 knots, the boat was designed by Greg Elliot, Clay Oliver, Philippe Briand and built especially for ocean record breaking. They will race in the new IRC class for The Superyacht Cup against such yachts as the classic J class Ranger, and the Wally Open Season. Ocean Yacht Systems have also renewed their sponsorhip of The Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin. Record breaking schooner signs up for the Superyacht Cup Palma

Swiss watch makers Ulysse Nardin have renewed their title sponsorship of The Superyacht Cup Palma for the third year in succession. The Superyacht Cup Ulysse Nardin will be held from June 11th - 14th and is expecting between 20 and 25 entries. In recognition of their association with The Superyacht Cup, Ulysse Nardin are also designing a special limited edition watch. They will produce 50 watches in gold and 99 in steel. One of the limited edition watches will be awarded to the winner of the 'Ulysse Nardin Gentleman's Award' at the prize-giving dinner on the final night.
