Therefore, we make an outstanding selection of the input material to achieve the lowest possible number of defects per square metre. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE</a> adhered to the strictest quality criteria on the market to meet the customer requirements,” explains Henning von der Thüsen, Managing Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286852/image/large-3f5688605e937ed0b9fb896e0cb3c633.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286852">The glass is always chemically toughened, producing the highest optical quality. “The alternative process of thermally toughening is a lot cheaper but leads to distortions on the surface due to the different process,” he continued. According to von der Thüsen, these distortions result in local shading or changes in colour that are visible at an acute angle or through sunglasses with polarising lenses.Within this scope, the quality of bonding and sealing should be considered. This is a crucial step when considering stability onboard. “After a few years of usage, a bad sealing will lead to optical defects and a potential risk of instability.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE</a> uses their type-approved materials and specially trained employees. As a result, the company is part of the ISO group that develops the ISO 11336, which defines the standards for applying glazing, bonding, and quality assurance on superyachts.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286848/image/large-9ac4e7b7d4beb1e175b4efb53c44e66b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286848">Assess the risks for long-term usage:Setting itself apart from competitors, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE</a> utilises a proprietary adhesive resin developed in-house for laminating its glass panes. This superior alternative surpasses the industry standard of using PVB foil, ensuring the highest caliber of quality and performance.Delamination is also reportedly a significant problem regarding glass quality in the superyacht industry. By using a PVB foil for the compound glass, the risk of delamination is dramatically higher compared to a compound glass with our specially developed resin. “In the case of delamination, the individual glass panes of the compound detach from the foil. Besides negative optical effects on the surface, the delamination rapidly decreases the surface load capacity and bending strength. Consequently, a costly replacement of the delaminated glass panes is required,” said von der Thüsen. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286851/image/large-e1aa02fcae8d1715738d6e01d223f00f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286851">Example of delamination Opt for a 360-service solution:<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE’s</a> glass is well-known within the superyacht industry for the excellent optical quality of curved glass. On this note, it is imperative that the glass supplier be a part of the design process from the inception of the yacht to ensure the designers contract realisable and successful projects. “The bending process of curved glass with big surfaces can get very complex, especially when several glasses stand in a line,” explains von der Thüsen. However, they also offer a 360-degree service to clients, from consulting during the design period, measurement, design load calculation and production, worldwide installation, and after-sale guarantee. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286849/image/large-1ba2cd9de5a30fd4f25b66c55b0288a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286849">With ever-expanding gross tonnage onboard superyachts and revolutionary concept developments, the demand for expansive glass is equally growing in popularity, with futuristic trends and the owner’s desire for a connection with the outdoors. Von der Thüsen noted, "the average glass surface per metre length constantly increases. In nautical history, a window was only needed to watch out, but today, clients ask for room-height glass to feel there is nothing between the inside and outside. With this, the use of glass onboard is rapidly accelerating and thus becoming a significant element of the superstructure and design of superyachts. “The requirements for quality and load capacity are increasing, as well as more curved glass being used on superyachts,” von der Thüsen added.Current difficulties within this market include quality and design trends encouraging “more and more glass suppliers trying to get into the market with meager prices at considerably low quality. The problem is that the prices convince many customers and only afterward with time the bad quality is recognised.”&nbsp;From a design trend perspective, this comes down to what is and needs to be more realistic onboard. “Designs feasible in the housing sector are mirrored to the superyacht industry but hard to achieve when considering the high requirements of a superyacht that must be reliable in the strongest weather conditions on the oceans. This is very challenging in planning, designing, and production, so you must always be very flexible (which we are),” reiterated von der Thüsen.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286853/image/large-74c88213b1c3eba82cf06fc659c13e71.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286853">MY&nbsp;VIVA with room-height glass surfaces Consider the Solar Factor and Heat Transfer Metrics:The solar factor, also known as the g-value, reveals the extent of solar energy that can penetrate through a glass pane. As sunlight passes through, the pane radiates energy that elevates the room's temperature.&nbsp;Conversely, heat transmission, or the ug-value, measures the amount of energy conducted through a material irrespective of visible light. Within building construction, the ug-value is a gauge for a room's insulation level.The solar factor, represented as the g-value, gains increased importance given the rising utilization of glass in superyachts. A higher g-value suggests more excellent heat permeability through the glass. One method to reduce the g-value is through the application of tinted glass. For instance, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE</a> utilised a uniquely dark grey glass for the 90-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DAR90.13m (295'8&quot;)Oceanco2018">Dar</a>. "Shading solutions should also be considered when implementing and designing glass onboard yachts," states von der Thüsen. Unfortunately, designers "often have their visions and [<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3829" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="TILSE Yacht Glazing (Company)">TILSE</a>] are seldom consulted." This issue is particularly noticeable in motor yachts featuring slanted, automotive-style windshields in the cockpit that lack an overhang for shade. Due to regulations prohibiting tinted glass or specialised coatings on the bridge, air conditioning remains constantly active during daylight hours. This results in inner glass cooling and external condensation, leading to the peculiar sight of a superyacht running its wipers in perfect sunny weather.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286854/image/large-522909c392cbff82c072f59616ef219a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286854">MY DAR&nbsp;with uniquely dark grey glassHeat transfer becomes crucial for yachts traversing regions with varying climate extremes, affecting indoor and outdoor temperatures. In such instances, the ug-value quantifies the efficacy of a window in retaining either warm or cold air. Incorporating an air gap can significantly enhance insulation properties.Hence, "while yacht windows may be growing in size, their dimensions are not limitless," and the "maximum standard dimensions for flat glass windows are 6 x 3.21 metres. Although larger sheets can be custom-made, they are not our primary focus. The issue is not technological but logistical; these large pieces still have to be road-transported and then installed onboard," which means "once they become overly large and weighty, logistical challenges begin to negate the benefits."

The yacht was extensively rewired and re-plumbed, demanding the disassembly of the yacht's interiors. Petricevic added, “Getting to this point took a lot of hard work and required a lot of skill, but it was worth the effort.
