By using FAME, biodiesel emissions can be reduced by 50-80 percent, or 60 percent with HVO, creating a reduction of around 50-90 percent, and 83 percent on average. Additionally, the main engines can be converted to methanol when it becomes more readily available.Her WABTEC engines are certified to EPA Tier 4 emission standard, eliminating the need for SCR and urea exhaust aftertreatment, and enable owners/operators to obtain the ABS LEV(US) notation. These engines also surpass US EPA Tier 4 and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">IMO</a> Tier III emission limits with a diesel particulate filter (DPF), to achieve EU Stage V emissions levels and obtain ABS LEV (EU) or BV ULEV vessel notations.For power generation, Sustain features direct rail injection for optimised operational efficiency at variable load cases. The generators can be switched to methanol operation or replaced with methanol engines when desired. She is also adorned with an array of solar panels and turbines to provide up to 92 kWh/day to the battery bank, supplying power to the electric toys and tenders, and giving that operation a ‘zero-footprint’.“For us, the goal was ‘effortless engagement’, providing a vessel where an owner could contribute by simply giving a thumbs-up. It’s a new way to look at how we develop all our vessels going forward,” concluded Robert Smith.

She is now the world’s most advanced research vessel.“The ship <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="OceanXplorer 187.1m (285'9&quot;)Freire Shipyard2010">OceanXplorer 1</a> will take ocean explorers to never-before-seen undersea worlds and allow them to beam back what they encounter via social media, digital experiences, and a TV show,” Ray Dalio, co-Founder of OceanX and President of Dalio Philanthropies, previously sald. An exciting announcement was made during the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">2022 Monaco Yacht Show</a>; <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> has collaborated with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino International</a> and Dark Ocean DeepSea for its latest acrylic submersible, Project Hercules. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243917/image/large-22472b33a37f2216761cb6721302584a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243917">Project Hercules is an evolution of Dark Ocean’s patent-pending elliptical nine-person AVA pressure hull, which overthrew the traditional bulbous pod often seen on submersibles for a more ergonomically sound and spacious design that doesn’t impede views or impact the experience of underwater excursions. The hull form is unrestricted and allows for the in-house – and partnered collaborators – to play with the interior space to fully enrich the experience. Rather than just having space for a pilot and two passengers, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> submersibles can be designed as an open lounge with plush seating, throws and bags. Triton has collaborated with Espen Øino International and Dark Ocean DeepSea for its latest acrylic submersible, Project Hercules. 

Project Hercules: The Espen Øino-designed submersible by Triton Submarines

The British design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coquine![design] (Company)">coquine![design]</a> has unveiled the renderings for a new 49-metre superyacht concept, Coba. The concept is heavily based on ocean and underwater exploration with emphasis on being a family explorer yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234376/image/large-712cb379245eca535ec4f8417763119e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234376">The superyacht Coba measures up at just below 500 GT making her a low volume vessel that is suitable for a family of four or five, or a small group of friends. For that reason she has been designed to be simple and reliable, and can be operated by a small crew. Designer Christian Leyk describes the concept as “a head turner, but by no means an attention seeker.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234378/image/large-049d911989bd0034370ddb8a2e73b725.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234378">The design inspiration for Coba stems from Christian Leyk’s love for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a> Submarines, “I personally find them very interesting. The underwater world has always fascinated me, and those submarines do make it accessible to people who cannot scuba.”The superyacht Coba has been designed with family at the heart of it, and is aimed at those who like to connect with nature and enjoy the adventure of cruising. “She is fairly down to earth, no fancy spa, or impressive saloons. Instead, you’ll have the observation deck where you can relax and just watch the world passing by” adds Christian Leyk.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234379/image/large-5d907afd3aa15dc3de90f6c12990f1e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234379">As well as this, the design has a very noticeable cartoon Octopus on her bow, “My son, who is almost six, loves watching the Octonauts. In fact, it’s one show he has watched more often than I could count, and it’s featuring an adventurous octopus called, you’ve guessed it, Coba!” As a result of this, Christian used this as his inspiration for creating a true family explorer yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234380/image/large-6555804a9c0863404db73d242ebf0a89.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234380">The concept Coba makes sure that all the essentials are onboard, making her a perfect choice for young families. “Of course she will have all the latest in satellite communication so you can work from wherever you are, as well as allowing the kids to watch their favourite cartoons!”&nbsp;For those looking for more adventure onboard, there is a submarine as well as a nine-metre tender, and space for Jet Skis, or a car for land excursions. There is a high-spec multi-purpose crane placed under the aft deck that once stored away can be transformed into a large activity deck for parties and entertaining.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234377/image/large-6c9f4d76113dfa31f3cc2f04cbd69493.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234377">In terms of propulsion, Coba can be adapted based on the client’s requests, but Christian suggests that pods are best as “they allow for the best manoeuvrability and noise insulation, so naturally this will make the vessel a hybrid, utilising diesel generators.” The yacht Coba, will also have a draft of three-metres and extra plating to allow the yacht to be ice-classed if required.Christian adds that although the concept is speculative, his contacts within the industry allow Coba to be completed quickly should an owner be interested. “I always like to keep close contact with naval architects, yards, project managers and fellow designers, even though <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coquine![design] (Company)">coquine![design]</a> does offer interior and exterior design. This means that any interested owner could see the project started in no time, and turn it into a home away from home for himself and his family.”

Designer Christian Leyk speaks out about his new 49m family explorer superyacht, Coba.

Bruce Jones, CEO and Co-Founder of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton Submarines.</a>What does Triton do?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton Submarines</a> is the world’s leading provider of civilian, luxury deep submersibles. I co-founded the company 15 years ago, but I have been in the submarine business for more than 35. We offer 24 different models which can carry between 1 and 66 people, diving from a minimum depth of 100 metres down to 11,000 metres. We’ve also designed and built the deepest diving sub in human history: the Triton 36,000/2 which has made 15 dives down to Challenger Deep: the deepest spot in the world’s oceans.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177713/image/large-5bc7cb8e0d864a95321cb0db211d6ae9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177713">Who buys your products?Our primary clientele is large yacht owners of vessels over 40 metres. Notably, quite a few of our clients use their subs for scientific purposes, including Ray Dalio, who owns the largest hedge fund in the world and captured the first-ever footage of the giant squid underwater using one of our subs!&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177720/image/large-03f51fb121c640fa6547d9a99c875bc0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177720">Lots of entrepreneurs fail. Why didn’t you? I have made every mistake you could possibly make running my business. The submarine business is my second career: I had a lot of success in my first career and I think that helped. But there were a lot of false starts in the early days. We designed submarines that nobody wanted, as I think we were ahead of our time. My favourite thing was at the Fort Lauderdale shows where people would walk past our booths and say: “Why would anyone pay $3 million to get into a submersible and dive to 1,000 metres?” My answer to that is, ‘’Well, would you want to go down to 1,000 metres in a cheap submarine?’The most important thing for me is persistence: you just have to keep at it, and my business partner has the same mentality. We are now increasing our capabilities every year and have recently been expanding into new markets. On my side, I’m actually planning to retire this year and move onto other things. You can’t live a high-stress entrepreneur’s life forever!&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177712/image/large-58978a3f01878819dcc18c7910e43ad8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177712">What are the latest tech developments in submersibles? At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Triton (Company)">Triton</a>, we have always done things that nobody had thought possible for submersibles, especially when it comes to how deep we can go. We are now looking to build a full ocean depth submersible with a transparent glass passenger compartment and are on the cutting edge of technology when it comes to developing these glass pressure hulls.&nbsp;We are also in the process of developing a yacht analogue submarine. It’s about 100 feet (30 metres) long, with a transatlantic range, and can dive to 1000 feet (approximately 300 metres). It will be complete with staterooms, a galley, the whole thing, just like a luxury yacht. We’re currently working on it with a well-known firm of outside stylists and interior designers.This vessel will be able to cruise above the water, powered by diesel-electric propulsion and with a maximum range of 3000-3500 nautical miles. Imagine it: you could be cruising around underwater, sitting on the ocean floor, or looking out of the viewport in your bedroom out onto a coral reef.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177709/image/large-9a1cc319d98d8368cc8771f58261fc6e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177709">You have also been spearheading the world’s first seafloor resorts and private residences. Tell us more.When you compare it to building a submarine that can dive to 36,000 feet, where the pressure is equivalent to 292 747s stacked on top of each other, putting a building on the seafloor is child’s play! You don’t have to worry about complex life support issues or power – you can just bring power from the shore. No one has done it before, because no one has the expertise necessary, but we are the one company in the world that does. We are planning to build a few of these private residences that will be around 3,600 square feet (334 square metres), which can sit in up to 60 feet of water (18.2 metres) and are accessed via an elevator and via the pier.In addition, some of the resorts which we are talking to now are interested in having a small adjunct using the same footprint as the residences. This could include having six underwater suites and a small underwater bar – and you could substitute a conference room or wedding chapel for one suite if you wanted to. Seafloor habitats and undersea living are going to become a reality: we have all the design and engineering done and we have some very good clients that we are talking to about locations for the first installation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/183996/image/large-e44c9ef9279f5760f736b2178622b341.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/183996">We can’t wait! Secondly, you also need to really know your subject matter. If you don’t have all of the knowledge yourself, gather the expertise of people who can advise you and help you move forward. But their commitment to making a positive impact for the people of the Bahamas is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. He and his team ended up on the podium after three action-packed days where 26 Blue Marlin were caught and nearly all were released.But no team had a better tournament than Captain Russell Sinclair’s Bayliss 77 Wave Paver. They won Top Overall Team and Top Captain and Crew honours. However, without a submarine, divers will be hard-pressed to reach the boat’s stern, which is just shy of 240-feet deep. With 124 on board, no one is thought to have survived, and the ship’s resting place remained unknown for decades.&nbsp;Sitting inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine park, the wreck is considered an advanced dive due to strong currents and its remote location. But with the security of a submarine, the wreckage is a diver’s paradise and marine-life magnet.
