(Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> unveiled its Nautilus yacht-submarine concept at last year’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. The Netherlands-based company followed up earlier this year with new interior renders in partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5796" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Officina Armare (Company)">Officina Armare</a> and the project has since grown from 37.5 to 42 metres in length. But can a vessel inspired by Jules Verne’s fictional novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea ever be a feasible proposition?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> knows what it’s talking about when it comes to manned personal submarines. Its model range – all designed and engineered entirely in-house using leading-edge 3D and FEM software tools – can accommodate from one to 11 people and operate at depths from 100 metres up to 3,000 metres. The company has a perfect safety record after many thousands of dive hours all over the world and its Cruise Sub 7 model carried on expedition-style cruise ships recently completed more than 1,000 Antarctic dives in a single season. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265884/image/large-b780b97b3a8f550ebc58c47c343e9043.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265884">“Our expertise for the past 15 years has been underwater vessels; now we have to start thinking like yacht designers as well,” says Lex van Rijswijk, who heads up the Nautilus design team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a>. “Naturally, we started with a feasibility study to determine whether it was buildable at all, but we’re well past that stage and it's definitely feasible.”The 1,610-tonne vessel will a depth rating of 150 metres, but it has to also work as a yacht on top of the water, which is why <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> has partnered with leading Dutch shipyards and marine research centres to assist with some of the technical parameters such as strength, weight, propulsion, speed and range when operating on the water’s surface. The pressurised hull will be built of stainless steel, whereas the deck structures will be a mix of stainless steel and GRP. The four circular viewing ports on each side of the hull, which are close to four metres in diameter, will be of acrylic as on all <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> submersibles (the windows bear an uncanny resemblance to an engraving in the first 1871 edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea that shows Captain Nemo at the helm of of the Nautilus behind the “bi-convex” window of the pilothouse).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265874/image/large-44c8f615ec83b62ea6c2cef3b6f0eb75.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265874"> Hybrid diesel-electricA specific area of research for the project partners has been the propulsion package. Diesel-electric systems on yachts are not designed to operate at a depth of 150 metres, while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> is more accustomed to working with much smaller propulsion systems. The most likely solution is a hybrid diesel-electric drive with batteries and the design team is in contact with propulsion suppliers to see who can the deliver the optimal outcome.“Nautilus is an evolution of our Under Water Entertainment Platform [UWEP] that we presented in 2021,” says Roy Heijdra, head of marketing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a>. “It’s about the same length but the main difference is that the UWEP platform is fully electric, because we envisioned it to be a shore-based operation where people go out in the morning, have lunch on the water, maybe do another dive in the afternoon, and then return to base. Nautilus, on the other hand, is conceived as both a submarine and a fully functioning yacht that needs more range, hence the hybrid diesel-electric propulsion.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265881/image/large-1b05a77231737d99317af9f93ea818b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265881">The idea is that Nautilus will engage diesel-electric drive on the surface and full electric battery power below the water. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> predicts it will be able to remain submerged for six hours at four knots, while in DE mode on the surface it will have a range of around 3,200 nautical miles at 8-9 knots.“One of the first practical considerations that came to my mind is the sundeck equipment,” says Heijdra. “Do you have to stow everything below deck when you submerge? We asked our design partners to look into this and they came up with a pretty unique deck set-up whereby most items can remain on deck. The bar fridge, for example, is housed in a watertight housing. Another thing we had to take into account were the hydrodynamics in submerged mode, so features like the hot tub and louvred hardtop can be retracted for less resistance and better speed and range underwater.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265885/image/large-0b32d48e511b3ccaef0530d87bb9ee51.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265885">Tender to&nbsp;Clearly, a 42-metre yacht requires a tender of some sort and there is dedicated docking slot in the stern platform. But what happens to the tender in submarine mode? In fact, the tender always remains on the surface because an important safety precaution for all manned submarine operations is that communications with the surface must be maintained at all times, which effectively means having an officer on standby in a waiting tender.&nbsp;Clearly there are safety factors that affect submersibles much more than yachts, not least the immense pressure at 150 metres underwater (pressure increases in relation to the surface by 1 bar for every 10-metre increase in depth, not accounting for atmospheric pressure), and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> is liaising closely with the classification society DNV. The principal design philosophy underlying DNV rules for submersibles is that redundancy is provided for all the essential systems, so that in the unlikely event of a failure they all remain functional and safe surfacing is guaranteed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265888/image/large-9678c76a828f6d820d0a09f870db55f5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265888">“The pressure hull and all pressurised components are required to undergo tests that significantly exceed the design diving pressure,” says DNV submersible expert Jonathan Struwe. “All the systems are tested during the various manufacturing stages, then again under controlled diving conditions, and finally at design diving depth. The role of the class society in all this is to ensure an independent critical review of the design by considering any foreseeable failure modes and load cases, reconfirmed and proven by load and functional tests.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265883/image/large-667ee94e0cd32a48a683492fd5dcf921.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265883">Surface stability&nbsp;Surface stabilisation systems, either fins or gyros, are the subject of ongoing research, but the low-rise, hydrodynamic superstructure brings with it the advantage of in-built stability: “We have much more hull structure below the water than ‘superstructure’ above it, which means the vessel has a very low centre of and a higher centre of buoyancy [the centre of the volume of water displaced by the hull],” explains van Rijswijk. “This is the opposite of what you find on a conventional yacht, and so Nautilus is already much more stable and may not require further stabilisation. And if the conditions get too rough, you can just submerge!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/265882/image/large-ec929a700ba819608fdd8b79a7f0983f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/265882">The General Arrangement has also to be finalised. Currently the proposed layout includes a master stateroom and four guest cabins, an observation lounge and gym, as well as accommodation for up to six crew. Because of the need for redundancy, the technical spaces will likely occupy a higher portion of the hull volume than a yacht of comparable size. &nbsp;What has been fixed are the positions of the deck hatch and the elevator in the back of the vessel (provisioning a yacht or submarine of this size by the stairs alone was not deemed feasible). The sweet sub-500 GT spot is desirable for shipbuilders and owners alike; lower <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">IMO</a> regulations need to be adhered to for one, but then you also have additional running and crew costs, pricier berthing rates, and limited cruising grounds in shallower waters. There is also the benefit of added privacy, as while you don’t have as much onboard space you can travel with less crew, making excursions all the more intimate. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208212/image/large-391ca1c70a6822b2c89fe2ca519bf6b3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208212">A beauty of this segment is that you’re not limited to production yachts either, as there is a &nbsp;plethora of astounding designers penning one-of-a-kind fully custom sub-500 GT superyachts, which are typically around 45-55 metres in length. “As the process of designing a full custom yacht is time-consuming, this is a sector pretty much exclusively reserved for experienced owners,” Jan Jaap Minnema, sales broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a>, explained.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/32758/image/large-b1924d2b13548bb868b7e704f857c44e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32758">While this has traditionally been the case, with recent events blocking a number of Russian clients out of the market, things could change. “Shipyards may need to reinvent themselves,” Frank Laupman, Founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a>, speculates. “If this situation continues, shipyards that build major 100-metre plus projects could lose a lot of clientele, the cruise sector would be a logical move for them. With these yards elsewhere, clients could be inclined to opt for mid-size projects with other shipyards.”&nbsp;There is also the issue of rising fuel costs. While this isn’t usually a persuading factor in this industry, the state of things at the moment may push owners to consider less fuel-consuming yachts. Another trend that has the potential to emerge in the future is from new money earned from crypto and the US tech boom. I posed this question to Albert Hakvoort of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Royal Hakvoort</a>, who said “these clients haven’t made it to his yard, but it could happen down the line after they’ve spent time enjoying chartering and production yachts.” &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206774/image/large-0405788646cb74c5f73f5e9358392f0f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206774">The current demand for mid-size fully-custom superyachts is as diverse as the yachts themselves, with clients coming from all over the world. There is a unifying factor though: these clients are experienced owners with high expectations. “My clients looking to go the custom route have usually enjoyed the ownership of production yachts, such as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> classics,” Jan Jaap Minnema. “So they know exactly what they like. I ask them to write a wish list of everything that’s important to them, this provides the foundation for the general arrangement. My role as a broker is to manage expectations, acting as an intermediary between the client, shipyard, and designer, every step of the way.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206771/image/large-e447c2e3dfa8a45448296c422b1d9dbf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206771">The process is lengthy, but pure customisation is the pinnacle of luxury; the bar doesn’t go any higher than taking a client’s perfection from a wish list to delivery. And when it comes to designing one-off bespoke superyachts there aren’t many designers with such a heritage as the Dutch studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a>.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a> has been in operation for more than 25 years and has designed over 100 yachts in that time, many of which are full-custom projects. If we reign the scope to the turn of the century, then <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> has more than 20 sub-500 GT motor yachts either delivered or under construction. Six of these are with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/54" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heesen Yachts (Company)">Heesen</a> and part of the Dutch yacht builder’s semi-custom series; while the remaining motor yachts are full custom and each with a story to tell. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206775/image/large-233bde91a402a83b801ad5a733d85419.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206775">I caught up with Frank Laupman to discuss two recent projects of his: &nbsp;the 43.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abydos43.9m (144'0&quot;)Venture Yachts2021">Abydos</a> by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Venture Yachts (Company)">Venture Yachts</a> and the 45.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Milele45.2m (148'4&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2022">Milele</a> by Royal Hakvoort, both designed in-full by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a>.The 43.9-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abydos43.9m (144'0&quot;)Venture Yachts2021">Abydos</a> is a true point in case Laupman explained. “We were approached by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Venture Yachts (Company)">Venture Yachts</a> with a brief from a very experienced Turkish client which specified small, but important details, such as circular portholes across the profile and vertical windows for the wheelhouse. We started with these small details and built the design around his taste.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/22891/image/large-6659764749b44d025009ec8b1da1397f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22891">“It was actually the interior that required the most attention for this project though”, Laupman confessed. The owner was very specific on certain aspects and features; for instance, he wanted the same vanity fitted that he has in his home. The vanity is large and incredibly ornate, which required <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> to design the master stateroom around this piece of furniture.Something else that was very important for this owner was to have a well-connected and open galley and dining area. “As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abydos43.9m (144'0&quot;)Venture Yachts2021">Abydos</a> is full custom we had plenty of scope to stretch and pull the dimensions to meet the family’s needs,” Laupman explained. “The owner’s wife loves to cook and spend time preparing food for her family, so the galley plays a very important role in the experience of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abydos43.9m (144'0&quot;)Venture Yachts2021">Abydos</a>.” So much so that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> remodelled the superstructure to allow light to fall directly onto the appliances.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206769/image/large-71309b71a1bcac840c600ab18df7b78e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206769"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206766/image/large-1839468fa009bf5a23e14212715c454f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206766"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4909" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Venture Yachts (Company)">Venture Yachts</a> handled the construction of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Abydos43.9m (144'0&quot;)Venture Yachts2021">Abydos</a> and between the Turkish shipyard and the Dutch studio, a highly charismatic sub-500 GT motor yacht came to life. “The client could have easily afforded an 80-metre superyacht, but he didn’t care. He wanted a yacht which he could cruise down rivers and enter certain bays; for this, he needed a yacht under 45-metres.”&nbsp;While small details can have a seismic effect on the overall design, not all requests start small – as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> experienced when it was penning the 45.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Milele45.2m (148'4&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2022">Milele</a>, which is being built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Royal Hakvoort</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Milele45.2m (148'4&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2022">Milele</a> is a sub-500 GT motor yacht and her owner was keen to stow an arsenal of toys onboard, including a submarine.&nbsp;“Our client really didn’t want to exceed 45-metres with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7921" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Milele45.2m (148'4&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2022">Milele</a>, so we had a lot of work to fit his wish list into a sub-500 GT package. Tenders and toys are important to him so we designed a large garage and additional storage foredeck, which is where a newly designed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. The client wanted them to be rounded and tapered forward. That’s not to say there weren’t any challenges. The Dutch builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> has unveiled the renderings for a new 37.5-metre yacht submarine Nautilus. The 1,250-ton vessel will be able to function as a yacht or a submarine and will have a range of facilities onboard.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243308/image/large-d2b14c689cf0e7b653820c5440890ed6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243308">The diesel-electric Nautilus has a depth rating of 200 metres, with a surface cruise speed of 9 knots and an underwater speed of 4 knots. Once ordered, an owner can expect to have their Nautilus delivered within 30 months.&nbsp;Nautilus offers plenty of deck space with a spacious sun deck equipped with a freshwater pool, a bar, and an alfresco dining table. This area is retractable when the submersible goes below sea level.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243307/image/large-94321e656a608077514c4ec15f79c7d4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243307">Her interior features a 50 square-metre lounge and dining area with four circular windows to allow for a constant stream of natural light. The proposed design for Nautilus has a master bedroom and four staterooms, as well as sleeping quarters for up to six crew, but the interior layouts are fully customisable for the client.Nautilus stores a pressure-resistant electrical tender, the Aronnax, under the aft deck and will stay outside while diving. Traditionally reserved for the navy and scientific research, underwater exploration has never been more accessible than it is today thanks to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> newest sub; the sleek and elegant NEMO submarine. To find out just how accessible, I travelled to Curaçao to test one out for myself and to say I was blown away by the experience would be an understatement. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218029/image/large-e47a5afabfb7b51d75933c8b1ba7d77d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218029">With the first 10 units already sold, the NEMO is breaking new ground in the world of underwater exploration, opening the audience to a wider range of owners and showing the world that you don’t need a 100 metre superyacht to delve into the deep. Designed entirely in-house by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> team, an unusual prospect within the submarine industry, the NEMO features a sports car inspired body which comes in 10 customisable colours. Her sporty look goes deeper than her exterior aesthetics, the sub’s interior is neatly compact, with control panels behind the chairs. The chairs themselves are likewise inspired by the automobile industry –and from the experience are extremely comfortable.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218018/image/large-18647746bdc62e19ab6e375554fb0c2c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218018">Arriving in Curaçao, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> submarine centre is located just off Mambo Beach on the south side of the island. Two years ago the company opened a testing and certification centre at the Curaçao sub centre which has been around for decades offering island guests trips into the deep. Built in the Netherlands, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> submarines cannot be certified in the Netherlands due to the water depth only reaching 50 metres, whereas in Curaçao the centre is based on a ridge that drops right down to more than 1,500 metres.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218016/image/large-7d05f18368d9dfafa4dfa169f2220b39.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218016">Scheduled for two dives over the course of the day, the first to 50 metres, the second to 100, I was first briefed by the pilot Artur, who has been with the company for years and works as a pilot, trainer and charter captain for when subs get sent out to various superyachts all over the world. With safety at the forefront of the company’s mind, I was both reassured and impressed to hear the list of automatic measures installed within the vessel in the unlikely event of an emergency, not least by the fact that it can remain below the water for 96 hours if necessary!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218022/image/large-981916482e8b9f6bbb493900eaa91f58.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218022"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218024/image/large-4c40c3470259b598aa4a9568d4867993.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218024">Walking me through to the launch station, my first view of the vessel was something of a surprise; a neat white submarine with a large acrylic dome sat in front of me, far more compact than I could have imagined. As the smallest and most agile of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> range, the NEMO weighs only 2.5 tonnes and takes up less space than two large Jet Skis, a huge advantage for the owners of smaller vessels. Roy Heijdra, Marketing Manager for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> commented, “There is certainly a perception that submarines are reserved for only the largest yachts or those with support vessels, but with the NEMO that simply isn’t the case. Orders have come from owners of ‘pocket explorers’ but also from a number of clients who don't own a superyacht at all, but have a home on the coast or off one of the great lakes.”In fact, the company has engineered a custom land launch for the submarine, meaning that owners are able to transport the sub wherever they wish to dive, meaning that the NEMO has vastly broadened the options for exploration to a much larger market. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218028/image/large-f38cea0ca42472b6c782b2253de41154.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218028"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218025/image/large-9b270999e23d4508c9e7d856af53281b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218025">In Curaçao the engineer launched the NEMO into the water and Artur stood on the back step with a remote control in his hands, guiding the submarine through the water to the pontoon where I joined him. Opening the circular hatch at the top of the dome, I boarded the vessel and settled myself comfortably inside, Artur joined me a moment later and we set off out past the harbour wall and sank below the surface. While that may sound like an unnerving experience, the ease and comfort with which the submarine is operated was hugely reassuring and a moment later we were floating among marine life as we skirted along the side of a reef, heading toward two sunken 20-metre trawlers.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218011/image/large-83f84292b715ad5cb5c93a2e50a39419.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218011">Artur explained, “The most impressive thing about the NEMO is its ease of use, of course pilots need to be trained by one of our team, but 75 percent of the NEMOs already sold are destined to be owner-driven and that was an important target for the design team. You can imagine the draw, many superyacht owners have demanding schedules and huge responsibilities, but when they step inside the sub and the rest of the world melts away as they explore the unfamiliar world around you.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218004/image/large-2c530268624ea29ab3b79cd2ea9247e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218004">It is certainly an inspiring concept and having been offered the controls myself, the ease of the system became immediately apparent. All of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="U-Boat Worx B.V. (Company)">U-Boat Worx</a> vessels share the same control systems, meaning that pilots can move between the models without the need for complex retraining. Operated by a joystick and directional panel, not dissimilar to a PlayStation controller, the sub has thrusters on all sides making it extremely agile and quick to respond, far more sophisticated than one would imagine.During the second dive we headed down to 100 metres, cruising off a bank until the darkness began to set in and the surroundings evolved into an unfamiliar landscape. The seabed was covered in feather-like coral and scales glinted in the spotlights as fish flashed past. At 105 metres down the subs safety protocol would set in, inflating with air and raising the vessel back to a safer depth, meaning that despite the slight spookiness of our surroundings, there was never a sense of danger. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218014/image/large-07c7f7c542d3375820499d1243f46430.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218014">With expertise in vessels that travel down to depths of 3,000 metres, the company also specialises in research and cruise vessel submarines like the C-Researcher Series, it is clear you are in very safe hands with the NEMO. Like the deep sea subs, for example the Super Yacht Sub which has a max depth of 300 metres, the NEMO can be outfitted with a number of unique additions, such as a camera, additional spotlights, arms and can even be custom designed.“While the NEMO is the world’s first production submarine, we also have clients that are looking for something custom and that is always an exciting challenge for us. For example we have just signed the contract for a high speed Super Sub that can reach speeds of up-to 8 knots, an absolute first in this industry,” explained Roy Heijdra.&nbsp;It is an extraordinary experience to be at such a depth underwater and have the chance to explore such unique and otherworldly environments, and at the same time be within a climate controlled bubble that allows you to enjoy your surroundings in comfort and clarity. It is no wonder that the NEMO won the RedDot Design Award 2020, marking her as the most sophisticated piece of underwater technology available. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/218021/image/large-dbac4c2e378dbd73f98a300df34bfa37.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/218021">When I asked Roy what he thought made NEMO stand out from her competitors, the answer for him was simple, “We are years ahead of our competitors because we have been designing submarines for more than 15 years, and our in-house engineers and designers are some of the best in the world. We don't rely on external suppliers and we are constantly innovating.
