A wind turbine further contributes to the yacht’s energy production by harnessing offshore airflow. Just as physical tank test models are giving way to computational fluid dynamics, so another form of virtual modelling is coming to the fore – the digital twin. But what is a digital twin, and how can we use them to streamline superyacht design, construction and operation?Providing an exact definition of a digital twin can be tricky, not least because different people use the term in different ways. With conceptual origins tracing back to NASA in the 1960s, the truth is that digital twins come in a variety of forms and offer multiple applications – all of which have the potential to change the approach to design and enhance the operational effectiveness of superyachts.“I haven’t found a consistent way that people use the term,” says software developer Boudewijn van Groos. “For example, some call a simple 3D model a digital twin, even if it doesn’t make predictions. It might show live sensor data from the vessel, but it’s really just a portal into the actual ship. That is fundamentally different to a software model that mimics the behaviour of a system based on physical or statistical calculations. Yet people refer to both as digital twins.”Models created in a software environment are arguably the purest form of digital twinning. They are increasingly being used both to train AI and to enable systems developers to code the core parts of a yacht’s controllers while the physical yacht itself is still in build – a decisive factor when faced with tight construction and delivery schedules.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397081/image/large-c63a38ee887c535cd43a28154e353077.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397081">Virtual virtuesVan Groos is leading a team of software developers who are undertaking the coding of a multifaceted monitoring and control system aboard Project Zero, the renewables-powered sailing yacht under construction at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters Shipyard</a>. In collaboration with German company XRG Simulation, they have been building a virtual version of the yacht’s systems in Modelica, which allows them to write the code for the programmable logic controller (PLC) for the thermal harvesting and recovery system, for example, and test it before the physical system has been completed. While the team has also been using a current sailing superyacht as a test bed, creating a digital twin has brought additional benefits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397079/image/large-c1ba2f94baf775740a49c5322a0b5621.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397079">“For everything we’re doing we first write the physical thing into code to form the digital twin,” Van explains. “That simulation can be very basic, or a deep mechanical simulation. It gives us an opportunity to prevent regression bugs and it means we can avoid having to run our code on a physical system that means needing the real machine every time, which is just a hassle.”Developing a digital twin not only creates a platform for virtual testing, it also provides an opportunity to explore or to train AI, which can have real-world applications in a finished project. Indeed, this is the approach that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3559" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Videoworks Group (Company)">Videoworks</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> took, in collaboration with the University of Pisa, to develop the systems on the 42.84-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf X42.84m (140'7&quot;)Rossinavi2024">Seawolf X</a> catamaran.“On a yacht you have a lot of very high-tech systems, each optimised and each with sensor actuators,” explains Maurizio Minossi, CEO and CTO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3559" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Videoworks Group (Company)">Videoworks</a>. “The idea is to create a sort of manager that grabs the data coming from the different subsystems and, thanks to the use of AI algorithms, gives it added value in terms of monitoring and control.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397078/image/large-3bbe7f4296cb60275d58eb400d1d5976.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397078">“AI algorithms need to train on something – you need a story,” adds Sergio Saponara, director of the Department of Informational Engineering at the University of Pisa. “But if the technology is new, how do you create that story? Creating a digital model of a yacht allows you to fill the AI with data. You analyse the chiller in a model, then you combine it with all the other models to create the whole ship.”The system they have developed, which has been designed to be modular for use across multiple yacht designs and configurations, integrates various network-connected sensors, smart plugs, and actuators, such as HVAC systems, lighting, and automated blinds, orchestrated by an advanced AI algorithm. The digital twin enables the simulation of different configurations and operational scenarios, generating virtual data that can be used to train AI models – a useful approach given the challenges of limited experimental data on energy consumption and passenger habits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397077/image/large-efe714be9d6f415bcddaf70b66ca2da0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397077">Test rig&nbsp;It’s not just in systems design that digital twins are being utilised. For Dale Morris, Group Head of Global Design at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a>, the development of digital twins has enabled advanced, in-the-box testing before a rig is stepped – a serious advantage given the one-off nature and complexity of superyacht masts and sail plans.&nbsp;“The outcome is what’s on the water, but the model that came before it has been through all the conditions,” he says. “It starts with base mast properties, rigging pre-tension and tuning, but we add in the actual moulded sail shape and structural files from North Sails, and then we can assess the rig to a whole other level.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397082/image/large-2efc90f958531c34f23220a01c23ffdf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397082">This allows the team to see the effect of their rig design choices even down to its impact on the actual shape of the sails. They can go into a whole CFD loop, where the fluid structure interaction (FSI) loops back into the non-linear FEA – non-linear because the mast is flexible. That essentially means they can sea-trial the yacht before any carbon fibre even gets laid in the mast mould.“That also flows through into how we communicate the safe operation to the customer with all the sheet runs and all the load interfaces, so that boatbuilders can build-in the right safety factors,” &nbsp;Morris explains. “You can assess all that within the digital twin.”It also impacts the initial sea trial phases because, rather than the traditional method of stepping a mast and eyeballing the rig to tune it and ensure it is set up symmetrically, it can effectively be pre-set. Gone are the days where you put the rig in, go sailing and flop from tack to tack, make changes, rinse and repeat, which can be a two-day operation.“We are able to virtually go sailing before we even put carbon in the mast tooling, and for yacht designers, owners and crew that’s a huge benefit because it elevates confidence before you get further into the project,” &nbsp;says Vincent Guiot, Group Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a>. &nbsp;Further, the applications extend to the operational phase. By using the information from the load sensors from specific conditions. If something doesn’t look quite right, the team can plug that data back into the digital twin and help someone on board diagnose the issue more efficiently.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397080/image/large-77d39333b2a17751661ad462a20fdfc0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397080">Practical magic&nbsp;As CAD has advanced, so 3D models have become commonplace, not only in terms of determining the underlying engineering layout of a vessel but also to ensure the vessel can be built as efficiently as possible. But when one superyacht project approached Dutch company Goltens to take that 3D model further, the potential for an all-encompassing digital twin quickly became apparent.“Normally we design, engineer and create 3D models, and during that process a lot of information on the components – size, material, capacity, make, model – is put into a database,” says Sandra Jutte of Goltens’ Green Technologies division. “But when the vessel departs, most of that information, which can number thousands of data files, stays behind. For this project, we were asked how we could collect all the engineering data in one place during construction and use it to make the yacht smarter in operation.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397085/image/large-8490e120db5880a524554f471c7eb9b6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397085">To achieve that, the Goltens team combined ongoing 3D scanning during the build with CAD and engineering drawings to create a digital version of Project Zero that is a perfect match for the real thing. The result is that all the information on the build, systems and components is available for easy access – especially useful when it comes to fault-finding or in the event of a system alarm.&nbsp;“You need an exact copy of the yacht, so during the entire build our team has been on site with a 3D scanner capturing every stage of the build,” says Jutte. “We’ve scanned every detail, including 100,000 metres of cables and six kilometres of piping.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397086/image/large-39fff693692206113bdc5e36b8ec672b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397086">Every pump, pipe and system is connected and with e-sharing it’s possible to click into the engineering drawing and instantly jump to the same spot in the 3D model, and vice versa. All relevant details and spare parts listings are available with a click. What’s more, the digital twin will form the backbone for predictive maintenance and, potentially, AI-rooted energy efficiency and systems analysis during the operational phase – an aspect that could have huge impact for a project where every kilowatt counts.The potential goes further, however, because wherever the vessel goes, the digital twin goes too. This means designers can use the digital twin to experiment with new ideas or test layouts without ever touching the real vessel, while engineers can follow system performance and simulate improvements, and and owners can explore their yacht anytime, anywhere.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397087/image/large-8c4ef31785ce28bc95f037d27cf282ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397087">Such a comprehensive scan-based digital twin improves maintenance aspects – with all manuals and spare parts lists easily accessible, and with the potential to add predictive maintenance algorithms – but also aids efficiency in a refit phase.&nbsp;“Refits and repairs are no longer a guessing game,” says Jutte. “Because if a component needs to be replaced or a new component fitted, the digital twin already knows what’s there currently and if the new one will fit. It means you can order or prefabricate parts with confidence. Outside, custom elements can be found throughout, from the spoon bow and matte-finished deck hardware to the sculpted stern cap and hand-painted transom finished in a wood-effect treatment. Smoked European oak, reclaimed bark-based materials, leathered stone and hand-selected veneers are featured prominently throughout. Natural knots, cracks and grain variations have been deliberately preserved rather than concealed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396255/image/large-213cb67058fc8448969608065d402377.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396255">A unifying design language runs throughout the entire yacht. The designers have employed curved architectural forms, shaping joinery, furniture, structural glazing, and lighting. They further remark that all elements either begin or end in a full radius, creating a sense of continuity between the spaces.The owners' choices can be seen throughout <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12410" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zero68.85m (225'11&quot;)Vitters Shipyard2026">Project Zero</a>’s design. Her main saloon features a flexible dining table designed to double as a puzzle and craft table, reflecting the owners' hobbies during extended periods onboard. Elsewhere, modular cockpit furniture can be swiftly reconfigured into either lounge or dining arrangements. The owner’s suite is arranged around the mizzen mast, which has been wrapped in a bespoke artwork by American sculptor Sienna Martz. Moreover, this area benefits from a dedicated study to support long periods of working remotely while cruising.Further customisation extends behind the scenes, where the traditional full-beam engine room has been eliminated to make room for a concealed service corridor, enabling the crew to move discreetly throughout the yacht while maintaining guest privacy.According to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a>, the yacht combines hydro-generation through regenerative turbine propellers with more than 100-square-metres of photovoltaic thermal panels integrated into her biminis. Taking place from 26 May to 30 May 2026, the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta returns to Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy.

Known for its traditional charm and as the birthplace of the cheese of the same name, the Dutch village of Edam is also home to the studio of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design Naval Architects</a>. As I settled down into the Regentenkamer (Regent’s Room) of the beautifully restored 16th-century orphanage which now acts as their studio, handpainted walls and a plethora of yacht models offered a glimpse into their forty year history, setting the stage for the conversations ahead.&nbsp;Founded in 1986 by Andre Hoek, with Ruurt Meulemans joining in 1999, before becoming partner in 2011, the studio specialises in naval architecture, exterior and interior design, as well as performance optimisation and the structural engineering of custom sailing and motor yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394086/image/large-b0a927e2d7997fae575f0756ee38d56a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394086">SuperYacht Times Sophie Spicknell speaks with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design Naval Architects Partners</a>, Andre Hoek and Ruurt Meulemans to find out more about the studio’s 40-year design legacy.“We wanted to create yachts that are not only high-performing, but visually timeless and most of all beautiful,” explained Hoek. From the early days of tank testing in 1987 to today’s sophisticated in-house developed performance software, hydrodynamic analyses and structural engineering, &nbsp;the studio has consistently pushed the boundaries of performance, whether for racing or cruising yachts. The styling of their yachts has become highly recognisable, with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design</a> name becoming a trademark, alongside their Truly Classic yacht designs.&nbsp;Over the years, the studio has grown into a multidisciplinary team of around 10 specialists, spanning naval architecture, hydrodynamics, structural engineering and interior design. “We are experienced in all fields,” added Meulemans. “That makes it easier to communicate and to find solutions together as a team.”Both Hoek and Meulemans share a long-standing creative alignment when it comes to yacht design, with this shared philosophy shaping the studio into what it is today. “We have a similar eye,” laughed Hoek. “Nine out of ten times, we say the same thing when we look at a design.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394104/image/large-77be71a61399b1223b5c619862f0f303.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394104">A recognisable signature<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design</a>’s long-term success has also been built on its semi-series Truly Classic range. Developed in the 1990s, the concept combines the elegance of the 1930s with modern hull configurations and was designed to lower the barrier to entry for clients hesitant to commission a one-off yacht.“There is quite a threshold for clients to walk into a design office and start a completely custom project,” said Hoek. “So we developed designs that were easier to step into.” The result is a portfolio of proven platforms, ranging from 15 to nearly 40-metres, that can be customised, while retaining a consistent design DNA.&nbsp;Some of the yachts in this portfolio include the 24.7-metre TC80 yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4078" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmyre24.75m (81'2&quot;)Holland Jachtbouw2000">Palmyre</a> which showed what was possible for customisation in 2000, as well as the first 27.5-metre TC90 yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3638" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kealoha27.5m (90'3&quot;)Claasen Shipyards2008">Kealoha</a>, which was launched in 2008, and the first 38.8-metre TC128 yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6756" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Atalante I 27.5m (90'3&quot;)Claasen Shipyards2009">Atalante</a>, which was launched in 2015. With a pronounced sheer, canoe stern and deep V icebreaking bow, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6037" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue II55.99m (183'8&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2020">Blue II&nbsp;</a>incorporates many modern features, while remaining classic in her design.&nbsp;“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6037" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue II55.99m (183'8&quot;)Turquoise Yachts2020">Blue II</a> was a really exciting challenge for us,” explained Meulemans. “We wanted her to perform like a modern expedition yacht, but you should still be able to recognise her as a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek design</a> at first glance.”Since then, the studio has developed smaller and mid-sized motor yachts that carry the same classic design DNA. “Whether it’s a 33-metre cruising yacht, or something closer to 75-metres, the principles remain the same,” said Hoek. “You can innovate in terms of propulsion or hull design, but the yacht still needs to be elegant, practical and enjoyable to live onboard.” With innovation at the forefront, various new designs measuring 27, 33, 35, 66 and 70-metres are also in development.The non-hierarchical structure of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design</a> also allows the studio to extend beyond to external collaborations with shipyards and specialist designers, while retaining overall design control. Their team is involved in all aspects of design, including complete interior designs by a specialised team at the studio, which ensures that decisions are both structurally and technically feasible. “When you understand the construction behind an interior, you can do so much more,” added Meulemans. “When interior designers work next to structural engineers, decisions can be made to optimise space.”For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design,</a> the transition from sailing yachts to motor yachts is a simple one. “What we have achieved with styling and performance for sailing yachts can also be done for motor yachts,” noted Meulemans.A striking new design that fits this bill is a 45-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Royal Hakvoort</a> motor yacht, which is due for delivery in 2027, as well as similar 33 and 66-metre designs which are also in development. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/339560/image/large-85b9c9c6c5118d4df7b63033ceada249.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/339560">Looking aheadFrom the cobbled streets of Edam to the open seas, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design</a>’s track record is firmly established, thanks to a large client base and approximately 170 yachts delivered. But the studio shows no sign of standing still just yet. Their current projects include new iterations of the Truly Classic range, as well as larger custom sailing yachts and an expanding profile of classic-inspired motor yachts.&nbsp;When asked what message they would give to the next generation of designers and naval architects, their answer was clear. “Be patient, it doesn’t happen overnight. Pieter van Geest founded <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1356" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Geest Design (Company)">Van Geest Design</a> in 2006 alongside his wife, Tracey Canavaggio, following a career shaped by experience at established studios. Before establishing his own practice, he worked within the sector as a captain, owner’s representative and designer, bringing perspectives from both the operational and design sides of the industry to his own studio.In this interview with SuperYacht Times,&nbsp;van Geest discusses his entry into the industry, the background that has shaped his approach, and how he views current shifts and future directions in yacht design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/389299/image/large-0b618dce188f345bf9dd86e1284f7fbd.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/389299">From industrial design to yacht designFrom an early age, Pieter van Geest developed a passion for sailing, spending much of his childhood on the water with his family. He later studied industrial design, but began to question whether that path fully aligned with his interests. “During my studies, I realised I was drawn to a more bespoke form of design,” he said. “In industrial design, you are typically creating products for a broad market, whereas yacht design allows you to work closely with an individual client and design specifically around their needs and ambitions.” It was that personal dimension, he recalled, that steered him towards the yachting sector.Early in his career, van Geest joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/52" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ron Holland Design (Company)">Ron Holland Design</a> in Ireland, moving from smaller 15 to 20-metre sailing yachts to larger projects. “At Ron Holland, I was introduced to bigger yachts,” he said, noting that his earlier experience had been focused on smaller yachts that were “more into the production”. Among the early projects he was involved in was the 28.04-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/60" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alloy Yachts (Company)">Alloy</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tawera29.0m (95'2&quot;)Alloy Yachts1995">Tawera</a> ex Catalyst. The vessel, owned by an American client and overseen by a professional management team, introduced a new level of coordination within the yard. “It was next level for the shipyard, and I was responsible for it,” he recalled. “It was not really about designing, but much more about building it and client communication.”The commission subsequently led to further work in England, before an unexpected change of course. When the owners asked whether he would consider taking on the role of skipper in the United States, he agreed, spending two years as a professional captain on the East Coast. In retrospect, he sees the period as adding a practical dimension to his design background. “Having been a captain makes you realise that not everything you design actually works,” he said, particularly on smaller sailing yachts where issues of access and maintenance quickly become apparent. “You have to get your hands dirty and go into the builds and fix stuff.”Following his time at sea, van Geest returned to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/52" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ron Holland Design (Company)">Ron Holland Design,</a> where he was involved in the design of the 77.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/270" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vosper Thornycroft (Company)">Vosper Thornycroft</a> sailing yacht Mirabella V, later renamed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="M577.6m (254'7&quot;)Vosper Thornycroft2004">M5</a>. It was during this period that he met his future wife and business partner, Tracey Canavaggio.The pair subsequently established <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1356" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van Geest Design (Company)">Van Geest Design</a> in 2006. In the early stages, they worked alongside <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/533" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rémi Tessier (Company)">Remi Tessie</a>r in Paris while building their own practice in parallel. “She focuses on the interior part of the company and I am more of the exterior part,” van Geest said, describing a division of roles that has remained central to the studio’s structure.Looking back, he regards this sequence of roles as formative in shaping his approach to yacht design. “It was a good path,” he reflected, noting the difficulty of establishing a studio immediately after graduation. “It’s a hard start to become a design firm. The project involved retaining the original hull while removing and reconstructing the entire superstructure.&nbsp;The redesign addressed spatial limitations inherent in the original build. “At the time when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Istros42.06m (137'12&quot;)Amsterdamsche Scheepwerf G. de Vries Lentsch Jr1954">Istros</a> was first delivered, the headroom was quite low,” he noted, adding that contemporary standards required a reassessment of proportions and internal volume. Increasing headroom while preserving the yacht’s character required careful structural recalibration and close coordination between engineering and design disciplines.The project also involved integrating modern systems into a classic platform. “The challenging thing was the technical integration of modern equipment,” he said, reflecting on the complexity of updating infrastructure without compromising the vessel’s identity. Such projects, including bespoke light fittings and integrated cinema experiences, reflect a broader industry movement towards multi-sensory design.” he recalled, adding that technological advances have since made such integrations more accessible.Alongside technological experimentation, van Geest observes a sustained preference for restraint in interior design. “It’s minimalist in its look,” he said, describing an approach that prioritises uncluttered and uncomplicated environments. For him, the yacht exemplifies a clarity of design that has become increasingly rare.Reflecting more broadly on what constitutes good design, he acknowledges the difficulty of defining it. “It’s a very hard question,” he said. For van Geest, strong design is characterised by clarity and coherence, where the proportions and lines feel intentional rather than arbitrary.
