Built in almost complete silence at the Yachtley shipyard in Kocaeli, Turkey and launched under just as much secrecy in July this year is the 80-metre superyacht Elements. Here we get a first look inside Turkey’s largest yacht ever built, and the largest yacht of her kind in the world.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/16321/image/large-de2703152ae6ffabdad9a51b50195a11.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16321">At 2950 GT, Yachtley and designer Alpha Marine didn’t hold anything back in terms of size and making sure that Elements is the biggest possible yacht that she could be (within the 3000 GT constraints). The sheer volume, therefore, made perfect sense to set up the interior according to SOLAS’s requirements to carry up to 24 guests. The ability to carry twice as many guests as other yachts in her size range makes Elements ideal for charter.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/16320/image/large-3f129fb5d4d0036f4d69d9f514509b14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16320">It was up to designer Cristiano Gatto to create Elements' interior spaces. An art-deco oriental theme was decided on which now fills the guest areas with shades of gold, ebony, ivory and sparkling precious stones. With both MTU engines running at full speed, Elements can cover a distance of 4,700 nm at 18.4 knots. Exclusive: inside the world’s biggest 80m superyacht 

Located in Koaceli Free Zone in Turkey, the Yachtley shipyard launched its greatest project to date this week ahead of her international unveiling in Monaco in September. The 80-metre Elements project is designed by Alpha Marine and features an interior by Cristiano Gatto.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/166248/image/large-1d5719933f15fa8979dd1832cfea370c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166248" class="legacy">At 2,950 GT, Elements is one of the largest superyacht projects to have been completed in Turkey. The steel and aluminium constructed yacht is designed to house 24 guests in 12 staterooms along with a maximum crew of 29. Yachtley launches 80m Elements project

Gresham Yacht Design has announced an 87 metre new build. I talked with a spokesperson for the designer earlier this week, who confirmed the contract for the construction has been placed with Yachtley.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/150591/image/large-c2a98cabb708cfcfe14f3e8cd04129a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150591" class="legacy">The owner provided a list of requirements for the yacht, with guest accommodation at the top of the list. The saloon will be full width amidships on the upper deck, and so the full beam of the yacht can be exploited and further expanded by the balconies port and starboard for exterior deck space. A 'Viewing Lounge' on the aft bridge deck is cantilevered and overhangs the side of the yacht with full height windows giving an uninterrupted panoramic sea views.The yacht has a single flowing line from the bow to aft deck, a design feature which holds the visual balance of the yacht together. She displays many original ideas incorporated into the design, including the combined Cone shaped Radar/TV Domes which Gresham calls the 'Scantenna Pods' to the balconies. In addition, the MES lifesaving system is also incorporated, which is unusual for a yacht this size and negates the need for external life rafts.<img alt="" src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/150592/image/large-87e5e7f583aca7b06c68dd3c06afdb4e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150592" class="legacy">An enclosed mooring room forwards allows the helideck to be on the bow and enclosed mooring rooms aft allow the main aft deck to be free of bollards, capstans and mooring lines to give large clear deck spaces for the guests.Naval architecture will be undertaken by Alpha Marine, and the vessel will be built by the Yachtley Shipyard in Izmit, Turkey. She will have a maximum speed of 18 knots, and approximately 3000 GRT.

Gresham Yacht Design announces 87m Yachtley contract

Tell me something about your business. Are you doing both interior and exterior design?<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150548/image/large-f504fabb51c2ee053b6065dc5ef0aeea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150548">Yes, actually we are interior designers, but we do a lot of concepts. We had a delivery last year of a vessel called I Nova, and that was the first big yacht with the interior, exterior and concept design all done by us. I’m very proud of that. We have a few other projects at the moment with Benetti and with other shipyards, so we’re starting to become more serious exterior designers, though our focus is interiors.Where are you based? I see you have an office in London and Italy?Yes, basically the main office is in Italy, close to Venice in the countryside, then we have an office in London and we will also be opening an office in Monaco.How many people are working in your company at the moment?We are 13 at the moment, and just like a lot of others designer, we also work with freelancers, especially when we start working on workshop drawings, which takes a lot of time and energy.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150549/image/large-0f3f9144781ffe6227ecb84c5a8916e1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150549">We are here at Cannes, where you did the interior for the Otam. Can you tell me something about the brief and the style of the interior?The brief was fantastic. If I remember correctly, it was during the Monaco Boat Show, and the briefing was, “close your eyes, and that is the interior that I want.” We discussed making the boat completely black with a touch of a lighter colour in order to see through. That is the result of what you will see.What projects are you currently working on?Several. Some are in quite an advanced phase, for example, we are designing a 45 metre and 50 metre for Heesen, then we have an 80 metre under construction at the moment in Turkey. We are in the preliminary stage with three 70 metre yachts, and one 85 metre, and I really hope that we go ahead with a boat at around 90 metres. We also have two yachts of 50 metres, where we are designing the interior and exteriors, but those two are not yet under construction. We are now starting with the preliminary stages for the next two or three years.The 80 metre project, Element, that has been going for a few years now. How far along is the interior?We have been in charge of the project since December last year. We have almost fully redesigned the yacht, and at the moment all the bulkheads and all the systems are there. We are finalising all of the technical drawings, and we are at the moment building the last room for the final check of the owners for quality, materials and finishing. Then they will proceed with the standard production of all the interiors, because they are quite a repetitive model or construction. Summer 2016 is the dream completion date for the client, and I would really be pleased if she would be in the Monaco Boat Show 2016.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/150550/image/large-168e9135f6dfe923555d5e4761344be0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/150550">You have been doing this for many years. What has been a really stand out, fun project for you to do?Can I say the next one? No, especially in the past two or three years, I’ve had the chance to do a project that, for different reasons, has been very close to us. One was the hull number 3 of Icon, Maidelle. She took almost four years to be designed and to follow all the production, so it has taken a lot of energy. Crazy Me is another stand out project because of the fantastic relations that I started up with the team of the owners on one side, and the team of the shipyard on the other side. The clients turned up to my office and said they wanted me to do everything, the exterior and interior concepts and layout, etc, and we will not build it in any shipyard, but we’re going to build a shipyard and create a brand out of it. Frankly, looking back, it was one of the most challenging projects I ever had.How would you describe Crazy Me’s interior style?It’s quite peculiar, as the project is itself. It’s very simple on total look, but with the volume and the windows, there is a really different approach to the living on board. That was one precise request of the clients, and with Heesen, I think we achieved exactly that. The perception of volume and to not be in a claustrophobic space.It’s also a design made with opposites, so all the minor details were designed to obtain something very simple, but at the same time very efficient. We designed for example the knobs to open the doors of the cupboards, because none of the ones on the market were working the way we wanted it to work, so that was the kind of project that we were facing. For example, the engineering of the stairs, which is a floating staircase made of glass with lighting etc, that was quite challenging. As a result, I’m pretty proud of it.By Merijn de Waard

Interview with superyacht designer Cristiano Gatto

The Middle Eastern owned superyacht Nourah of Riyad was completed in 2008 by the Yachtley shipyard in Turkey with interior and exterior design by well known superyacht designer Donald Starkey. Superyacht Nourah of Riyad lengthened to 70 metres

In May 2008, and with great anticipation, Nourah of Riyad left her dry dock and entered the waters of Izmit Bay for the first time, making her the largest superyacht launched in Turkey. Both her plush interiors and crisp exteriors were designed by Donald Starkey. The main saloon maintains this superyacht’s contemporary themes with a multi-level overhead arranged in a distinct decorative pattern and is fully carpeted. This space has integrated indirect lighting with special care taken to ensure that the lighting could not be seen through reflection. The main saloon also features built-in seating and loose furniture arranged in a majalis style, including a gaming table sized for six. The suites offer spectacular panoramic views from port or starboard sides, oversized king-sized beds, and electronically controlled adjustable bed frames. Columned headboards are upholstered wih lacquered panels. Each suite features built-in cabinetry that conceals well-equipped entertainment systems. For privacy, electronically-operated screens and curtains have been installed for all the windows. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/130837/image/large-c0be3b9ff92c5bba5beed7b309d09a80.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130837">Attached to the dressing rooms, through sliding doors, are the his and hers luxury baths. The starboard bath includes a steam shower and sculptured marble vanity. The port-side bath features a shower and separate bathtub and a second sculptured marble vanity. Special attention was given to air flow in the Owner’s suites, to ensure that dry air is always moving from the suite into the bathrooms areas, from where air will be continuously extracted, to avoid unwanted drafting. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/130838/image/large-cad0db6f64ae0a562dbb185dc1b7597b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130838">The owner’s private area also features a dedicated lounge that spans the full width of this superyacht, offering forward-looking panoramic views, comfortable seating, and a well equipped entertainment system. <img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/130839/image/large-b70bb97b5e438112a2eb5c5046f4f411.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/130839">On the main deck starboard side, separate from the main saloon, is a purpose built private theatre with seating for nine. Each suite is finished with its own unique interior design. Suites are fitted with either a king-sized bed or two extra wide single beds. Bulkheads have mahogany paneling and veneers, lacquered fabrics, padded leather, and other specialty details. Built-in cabinetry is accentuated with gold-plated or hand-painted fixtures. Windows have electrically controlled shades and curtains. Each suite has programmable indirect lighting made by Savage Marine.
