The hull of the yacht, hull C.2239 was constructed at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/191" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yildiz Shipyard (Company)">Perini Navi Yildiz Shipyard</a> and <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/hull-of-fourth-perini-navi-60m-sailing-yacht-arrives-in-viareggio" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">was moved to Viareggio in January 2018</a>. Milan-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> has come a long way since the studio was founded by three young postgraduates in 2004. With their diverse backgrounds in architecture, automotive and interior design, they chose the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> name to evoke their passion for design and the formal research that goes into their projects. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/214865/image/large-2a5a9d058a6555a3760866b59555f157.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/214865">Over the years the studio has evolved and matured. (Company)">Tankoa</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/207097/image/large-7c518165baffe4e2442855b521019304.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/207097">A glance at the list above reveals a preponderance of projects in Turkey. When SuperYacht Times recently dropped by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> studio, we began by asking the company principals whether this has been by choice or chance. &nbsp;Antonio: A bit of both. Certainly most of our clients today are European or Turkish. When we were starting out it was probably easier to find work in Turkey and we’ve maintained those friendships and connections. Turkey is also ideally suited to our core business for yachts between 40 and 70 metres. A key aspect of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> is that most of our work is full-custom, which is another reason why our Turkish customers come to us. We also have Latin American clients and we are working to develop the North American market through our broker contacts. But the market is opening up: a few years ago we would never have knocked on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>’s door, for example, but even they are now presenting smaller concepts within our size range.You head up a young team of designers – is that a draw for younger owners?Enrico: It certainly doesn’t do any harm. The owners of the first two 43-metre Atlantique hulls in build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo Superyachts</a> are in their early 40s like us, for example, and we have a lot of enquiries from owners looking to acquire their first yacht of 40 or 50 metres. This means they come to the table with very different set of expectations than the older generation of owners, who probably grew up with smaller boats before investing in a superyacht.&nbsp;We’re told that younger owners are more interested in sustainable technology for their yachts. Is that your experience?Antonio: Just recently we had a discussion with an owner’s representative interested in a 75-metre project with advanced hybrid propulsion, eco-efficient glass, energy recycling, and so on. But that was just one customer. Even among younger owners, sustainability is rarely a priority.&nbsp;Enrico: Yachting is at least a decade behind the automotive industry in this respect. I started to think seriously about buying an electric car in 2020 when they were still at a premium: now you see Teslas all over the place. The technology for yachts is still developing and it’s going to take a while for both the products and perceptions to catch up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213969/image/large-94be124531b9db0a91dffdfdf0b81467.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213969">Your most recent exterior designs have a harder, cleaner edge to them. Does&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a>&nbsp;have an in-house style?Enrico: More than a style, I think we have an in-house ethos that is reflected in our designs. The Architecture for Voyagers philosophy looks to renew the balance between structure and form, elegance and versatility. The Columbus Atlantique range, for example, expresses what we are all about: clean, contemporary lines without any fussy adornment. Sailing yachts are rarely over-designed, so we combined Italian GT sports car motifs with a classic scooped-out sailboat stern that highlights the essence of travelling by sea.Antonio: Our focus has changed since Enrico took over as head of design and we’ve seen this in the projects we have in build or in development with four times the number of exterior designs we had ten years ago. The way we present projects to shipyards and brokers has also changed. We used to go with a portfolio of what we had already done, take notes on what they were looking for, and go away and come up with a design. Most of our proposals today have already been developed independently in-house. This was the case for the Atlantique range, but also the Neptune and Superleggera concepts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/202265/image/large-c3e133582ee8776af0ff79bcc50f5f26.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/202265">Is there a yacht project that you would like to design given the opportunity?Enrico: There are a couple of projects we worked on during lockdown when we had more time to spread our wings that I’d like to develop further, also because they are smaller than what we usually do. But I’m also very interested in the evolution of &nbsp;relationship between spaces in yacht design. We’re starting to see yachts of 55 metres or more that are under 500 GT, and you can only do that by having more open or semi-open spaces. This in turn influences the exterior proportions and the relationship between full and empty volumes.&nbsp;Antonio: I think this is one of the most exciting design trends we’re seeing at the moment. The most recent example is 58.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phi58.5m (191'11&quot;)Royal Huisman Shipyard BV2021">Phi</a>, the longest yacht under 500 GT, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor D Rover</a> and built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Huisman Shipyard BV (Company)">Royal Huisman</a>. These low-rise superstructures and long, slender hulls are more challenging to design and engineer, but we’re seeing more and more demand for this kind of yacht. We’ve started experimenting with designs of our own and the 50-metre explorer concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tankoa Yachts S.p.A. (Company)">Tankoa</a>, for example, is available in two different versions that prioritise interior volume or hull length.

Last week, the Italian design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/908" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hot Lab (Company)">Hot Lab</a> celebrated the successes it had in 2021. (Company)">Baglietto</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/191" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yildiz Shipyard (Company)">Yildiz</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5574" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Extra Yachts (Company)">EXTRA</a> and more. Finding himself today in the quintessentially Dutch city of Haarlem, Israeli-born Jaron Ginton has taken the scenic route into superyacht naval architecture and exterior design. Serving five years as an officer in the Israeli navy before becoming charter captain of a 24-metre schooner and a 20-metre motorboat and travelling across the ocean to the Caribbean on a wooden sailing boat with his now-wife, “It was only at the age of 29 that I started to study naval architecture and then went into business with my partner, Ferri Weber,” Ginton explains. “After 11 years, in 2002, we split and I formed&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/285" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ginton Naval Architects (Company)">Ginton Naval Architects</a>.”<img src="/uploads/store/photo/113496/image/large-83008deb50f8381d6845d1d5a5ffd4ab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/113496">With such a varied path to yacht design, here Jaron takes SuperYacht Times through the six steps to his superyacht design success.&nbsp;1. My 11 years and 50,000 sea miles of active sea experience have significantly affected the look and function of my designs. As a user of a boat, you know what is required with things like the anchor arrangement and the chain locker - both things are annoying if they are not well designed! We also design to comply with the classification society and try not to go beyond that too much, but, for example, when it comes to the anchor, we often use heavier anchors than are recommended from classification as from personal experience, I know how important it is. Another example is the wetness of the forward deck: those things you cannot study: you have to do it by feeling and there is no instruction manual on how to create a dry bow or a wet bow. There is nothing compared to practical experience. You do it by feeling. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/17101/image/large-d60e0fee10b407d71fb83cb889f4bf22.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/17101">2. There were a few milestones that helped me along the way. One of them was the 48-metre motor yacht called <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1512" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Elsa48.35m (158'8&quot;)Scheepswerf Peter Sijperda2004">Elsa</a> (previously named Grace), but unfortunately she was a total loss on the rocks in Saba. They were not at anchor, they were on a sinker which apparently was too light for them. Actually, the owner of this boat told me when we started: there is no budget, I don’t want stabilisers but I want a comfortable boat and so we played with the beam until the boat was just about compliant with the rules for cargo ships because at the time, she was registered as a cargo ship. The owner told me that after years of chartering in Norway, he never once missed the stabilisers. It all went very well until he wanted to sell the boat, as no one wanted a boat without stabilisers and to add them at that late stage was a difficult task, but eventually he did sell her. It’s unfortunate how it ended. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/16031/image/large-fe4ee191dd38124d54b40a91ebb5f312.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16031">A second milestone was the 2006 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/323" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Metsuyan IV36.2m (118'9&quot;)CBI Navi2006">Metsuyan IV</a> - a 36-metre we did with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CBI Navi (Company)">CBI Navi</a> - this was an exceptionally nice project. Once these milestones were completed, we went on to do six projects in Moscow by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/442" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Timmerman Yachts (Company)">Timmerman Yachts</a> and another six boats in Ukraine. Later we did many boats in Turkey and are still very busy there, as well as in Holland, mainly with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2948" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van der Valk Shipyard (Company)">Van der Valk</a> and with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/293" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Shipyard (Company)">Mulder</a>, and workboats with de Haas Maasluis.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/68362/image/large-cc989b558a19264f1219de4a127487a6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68362">3. About half of our work is what we have designed ourselves. The other half we get from styling designers like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/234" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Guido de Groot Design (Company)">Guido de Groot</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cor D. Rover Design (Company)">Cor de Rover</a> and others. Shipyards make up 50% of our client-base such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi-Yay (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>, who we work very harmoniously with and with whom we have completed nine boats since 2009. The very first boat with them was the successful 41-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Steel41.0m (134'6&quot;)Mengi-Yay2011">My Steel</a> and a repeat order immediately followed. The latest was the 44m <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6838" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tatiana V43.7m (143'4&quot;)Mengi-Yay2019">Virtus</a> which was launched last year and has already been sold. With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/293" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Shipyard (Company)">Mulder</a> shipyard we did the naval architecture for 13 boats, including the 30-metre A Squared as well as the 22-metre Fairwind, and followed with six boats with the same hull over the years. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2948" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Van der Valk Shipyard (Company)">Van Der Valk</a> shipyard has assigned us for the naval architecture of eight yachts including the 37-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5022" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Santa Maria T36.8m (120'9&quot;)Van der Valk Shipyard2015">Santa Maria T</a> and the fast boat series called ‘Beachclub.’ <img src="/uploads/store/photo/103996/image/large-6be9cec5fa11d12d6d745116d1155664.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/103996"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/104004/image/large-4710a139e8bb2d865caab827a5319b89.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104004">4.&nbsp;We don’t tend to experiment with new hull shapes and we are reserved with adopting new trends without recognising the side effects. For example, when it started to become fashionable to adopt a straight bow, we recognised the advantages of the longer waterline and more space at the bow, however, this also has two drawbacks. One is that the anchor chain may touch the stem when swinging on anchor and the other is the wetness of the bow deck. Whilst the anchor is a drawback one should just accept, the wetness of the deck could be improved scientifically by adding a pronounced spray rail above the waterline, and obviously, having a high bow also contributes. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/22743/image/large-7986dda2c894f1e161a324c212b6080c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22743">5. The 31.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5398" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CCN - Pisa (Company)">CCN</a> boat <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vanadis31.2m (102'4&quot;)Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN)2019">Vanadis</a> was the first time we did a hybrid with a pod drive on board. We needed to facilitate the space in the engine room for the electrical system and so we created one small generator room at the bow and one engine room at the stern. One big advantage of this setup is that you don’t need to put the accommodation at the point of the bow but it starts a few metres behind the collision bulkhead where the boat is much wider. The pod drive has its own advantages compared to a conventional propeller, as the propellor is directed to the stream, whereas with the conventional propellor you have a shaft angle which is not the natural position in relation to the stream, so you have less vibration and higher efficiency as a consequence. With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vanadis31.2m (102'4&quot;)Cerri Cantieri Navali (CCN)2019">Vanadis</a>, we were the winners of the Boat International Design &amp; Innovation ‘Eco Award‘ this year. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/111696/image/large-9dfa866de2816c3d01b975bb0dc6ee93.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/111696"><img src="/uploads/store/photo/111702/image/large-d6c1ac6ed9d145b3c3925122ecb895ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/111702">6. I think it is impossible to predict the future of the industry, but taking into account what’s happening for us now, it looks positive. Under construction we have a 42-metre sloop with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi-Yay (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>, which is very much our style. Also, the 41-metre M55 at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/191" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yildiz Shipyard (Company)">Yildiz Shipyard</a> will be launched this year alongside the 43-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7070" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunrise 43.06m (141'3&quot;)Yildiz Shipyard2019">Sunrise</a>, which was delivered to her owner at the end of December. In the Netherlands, we are involved in an extension of a large yacht and we are also refitting a 50-metre Russian/East German fish factory boat called Kaspryba built in 1992 in East Germany which will become a geological research vessel. The process is very similar when working on both a yacht and a commercial vessel. That said, we do not identify too much with supersonic boats and styling is not our major activity. I studied business administration at New York University and during my summer holidays, I spent a couple of days on my friend's yachts: that injected a passion for yachts into my blood. We also have an office of our regional headquarters for F&amp;B distribution in Marmaris where is full of yachts and famous of gulet building, that’s why we decided to get into the yachting industry and build our first yacht.How did you become involved with Aresteas Yachting?At the last stages of building our first yacht in Marmaris, I became involved with Aresteas Yachting, since market research and sales are my fields. We aimed to give the impression of a tri-deck superyacht, but on the other hand, we wanted to build a vessel that can sail without engines, and with no noise aside from the sound of winds. We would like to use this reputation to our advantage. When you get inside <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aresteas50.92m (167'1&quot;)">Aresteas</a>,&nbsp;you can see and feel the Turkish heritage on the wall motifs. We have very talented carpenters and their craftsmanship has affected our build very positively. Turkish baths are very well-known all over the world, so because of this idea we aimed to use the best marbles in our bathrooms to showcase our cultural heritage throughout<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aresteas50.92m (167'1&quot;)">&nbsp;Aresteas.&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/33850/image/large-32e934aef492c4b5c0cb45e52652d119.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/33850">What does the future hold for Aresteas Yachting and what do you have on the drawing boards?&nbsp;After finishing our first superyacht, we brought her to Monaco Yacht Show in 2017 and invited most of the well-known brokers onboard: they all liked the yacht and this really motivates us for the future. We are planning to build a superyacht over 55 metres and we are still working on the design. She will be a trideck, six cabin, Ocean-going yacht with a big beach club and skydeck that will be also available on the charter market. We are also considering options for buying a shipyard in Malta or Italy in the future.&nbsp;
