In collaboration with Torqeedo, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3619" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtwerft Meyer Gmbh (Company)">Yachtwerft Meyer</a> has developed a fully electric version of its Silverline open tender, showcased at the Monaco Yacht Show this year. Schutte notes that while electric drives offer a zero-emission alternative, they come with a weight penalty and limited autonomy, similar to current electric cars. Nonetheless, they meet many mission needs and represent a significant step toward sustainability.Looking ahead, Schutte and his team are focusing on a fuel cell system to overcome the limitations of fully electric drives. “Small fuel cells are now being used in vehicles with specific mission profiles,” he explains. “We are working on a zero-emission hybrid system that could address the current range limitations of electric drives.” The anticipated fuel cell technology could revolutionise the practicality of electric tenders, potentially making them a viable option for more large yacht owners in the near future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/250090/image/large-f485eacb75c6691ffa5255347b2349e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/250090">When discussing the benefits of hybrid versus fully electric drives, Schutte highlights the trade-offs. “The primary challenge with fully electric propulsion is weight and limited range due to battery storage capacity,” he says. In contrast, hybrid systems mitigate some of these issues by combining electric and internal combustion engines, reducing range anxiety. However, hybrids also introduce additional weight and complexity, including these associated with onboard charging systems. “While hybrid systems offer zero-emission operation in sensitive areas, the balance of risk and reward still leans towards the risk side due to these factors,” Schutte concludes.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329290/image/large-e76ab14c9380d7c998fa69f16ba6469c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329290">Integrating natural and innovative materialsMichael Schutte discusses the company's approach to integrating natural and innovative materials into their tender designs. While the team experimented with flax fibre cloths and bio-resins for laminating parts, they found that the additional weight required to match traditional strength led them to reconsider this practice. “Though we studied laminating with these materials, the weight penalty for equivalent strength has dissuaded us from making it standard,” Schutte explains.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/327714/image/large-ccb57d627e75c82bd62a71fb97ef1cc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/327714">Despite these challenges, the company has successfully adopted alternative decking materials to replace scarce genuine teak. Schutte notes, “We have tested various alternative decking materials with positive customer feedback.” They are now exploring a super-light insulating foam from the aerospace industry, which Schutte believes could significantly reduce thermal gain and weight in engine spaces.Bio fabrics and resins are currently sourced from smaller manufacturers, but Schutte is optimistic that growing industry interest will improve their reliability and consistency. He notes that while small batch production can lead to variability in mechanical properties and might require more layers to match traditional materials' strength, the commitment to experimenting with these materials has already led to significant improvements. A car elevator is in its final stages of assembly for a luxury private residence, and the two round glass elevators will be shipped to Tasmania for installation in a catamaran ferry. Additionally, we have installed our unique belt-driven round elevator on a 120-metre yacht, which promises to be a stunning feature with exceptional visual and rider quality.What are the unique constraints when designing elevators for yachts?Yacht elevators must contend with unique challenges, such as movement, limited space, and heightened aesthetic concerns. Safety constraints are paramount, and ease of maintenance for the crew is a top priority. For instance, when designing elevators for different vessel types, the requirements often vary based on the client’s preferences, the shipyard's needs, and the designer’s vision. Our team trains the crew during the installation handover to guarantee they understand how to perform basic upkeep.Can you elaborate on your maintenance services?We provide comprehensive maintenance services for all types of lifts, ensuring they operate safely and efficiently. Crew members are trained during the installation handover, and we aim to educate them about what to monitor. Our technical team usually returns for maintenance once a year and flags any issues for the client. Additionally, we once considered a robot arm concept, and we have ongoing projects with belt drives on a 120-metre vessel, which is quite unique.What makes your service stand out in the industry?Our unique selling point lies in the pre-assembly of elevator components in our workshop in Meppel. By doing this, we can ship elevators in one or two pieces, significantly reducing installation time onboard and enhancing quality. Partly due to rising prices of light metals such as aluminium, losses started to mount from 2022. The orders that were needed to fill the gaps did not materialise. With eight years of experience as a crew member on superyachts, he brings a fresh perspective focused on consistent growth, inspired by Sir Dave Brailsford’s ‘one percent philosophy.’&nbsp;“We strive for marginal gains of one or two percent, as even small enhancements can lead to significant progress over time,” he explains. INEOS’s recent part-acquisition of Manchester United has inspired MacManus to think more creatively in the department's day-to-day practices. “We can always do better, dig deeper, find more for our clients”This approach has shown promise, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> reporting a 30 percent increase in revenue for their fleet of 13 superyachts this year-to-date, compared to 2023. It’s not just about presenting an offer and a contract; we want to maintain contact and show our interest and care for their yacht. We aim not only to provide a strong revenue stream for our clients but also to share our marketing expertise. This service also allows MacManus to assess clients’ commercial mindset by prioritising those who view their yachts as revenue assets, while permitting others to opt out of data updates.“This year, charter clients have been particularly price-conscious,” MacManus observes, underlining the need for owners to align their expectations with market realities. While many owners see their yachts as prime investments, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> focuses on providing accurate market data to facilitate informed decisions. Regular market reports are vital, as MacManus states, “They provide market knowledge and help owners understand when to adjust pricing or negotiate.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332066/image/large-57a93d2356d77113582e7cadca9e4e7a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332066">“We have helped our owners become more flexible and commercially oriented, largely due to our regular data updates,” he explains. Rather than suggesting arbitrary price cuts, MacManus stresses the importance of context and credible advice in navigating shifting market conditions. “By offering data and insights based on our historical knowledge, we ensure that our recommendations are informed and relevant,” he adds.Strategic and tailored marketing<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> has collaborated closely with its marketing team to refresh the fleet’s image, ensuring each vessel remains relevant in the evolving market. This has contributed to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> charter fleet revenue in the 20 to 35-metre segment surging by 185 percent this year-to-date, compared to 2023. In addition, yachts between 60 to 80 metres and above experienced a 69 percent increase.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332065/image/large-6e222907edd116c149efa17f57440543.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332065">MacManus attributes the notable increase in charter fleet revenue partly to a shift in owner mentality: “Owners are realising the need to reinvest in their products.” He cites a specific case where a yacht transformed its charter performance after adopting a cost-effective wrapping method, allowing significant aesthetic changes at a fraction of the traditional repainting cost.MacManus notes that, “these owner investments have been transformative, with the marketing team playing a crucial role in these improvements.” Indeed, “the previous marketing materials were inadequate for some yachts,” and new imagery to display the yacht’s features has played a crucial role in promoting them, particularly to a younger clientele. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332071/image/large-72f2d0be1711627190c08357a00a2253.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332071">The 35 to 60-metre segment experienced only a modest 10 percent increase, indicating intense competition: “There are simply too many boats in that range, and with more launching, competition will intensify next summer.” This highlights the necessity of a data-driven approach to tailor proactive marketing strategy.Looking Forward“Our fleet consists of only 13 boats, making every new client invaluable,” he adds. Over the past eight to nine months, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/206" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Partners International (Company)">YPI</a> has refined its marketing strategies, ensuring every lead is pursued vigorously. “We are relentlessly connecting with charter brokers and clients and gauging their interest. In fact, the original concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> was the final essay at university, so although the company was founded in 2011, it had really been with me for years before then.&nbsp;After university, I decided that before establishing my own business, I needed to learn how to work within a team and to grow in practical experience. It felt presumptuous to assume I had all the answers without appropriate training, so I joined a company in Asia for five years importing luxury furniture design manufacturers. During that time I learnt how to work with different people, from various backgrounds and cultures and it taught me the skills that you need in order to manage your own team and your own clients. It was an incredible learning experience and gave me the opportunity to work in a varied and complex environment, and after five years I returned to Italy and began the research process for the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331999/image/large-21757ca123fc9e37a78d60e699868147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331999">Why did you decide to focus on high-end, sustainable linens?&nbsp;I’ve always had a deep passion for quality and for me Italian linen is the supreme material with an amazing heritage, however the sustainable approach was not in my original concept. I wanted to offer the lineage of linen with a modern twist, but I didn't yet know what that twist was. I am an observer by nature and when I returned from Asia in 2011 sustainability was beginning to become mainstream, with eco foods in supermarkets for example and the demand was increasing . Sustainability was also becoming a buzz word in the media and I could see that it would only increase in significance, so I decided that founding the business with a truly green heart would set <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> apart from the rest of the market. That is when the struggle really started.At that time it was impossible to find refined sustainable fabrics. Everything on the market was rough and completely unsuitable to luxury linen products. That was a period of frustration and of almost giving up because once I'd set my heart on the sustainable element of the business there was no way that I was going back. It became absolutely central to my belief in the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331998/image/large-5f21af1057a168c58caf722e89ffeb08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331998">How did you overcome that hurdle?I met with the owner of Italy’s largest fabric producer, and after an eight hour meeting managed to convince him to invest in a certified sustainable production line. He said, “If I can't convince you to change your mind about this approach in eight hours, you must be able to see something I haven't seen yet, so we will try it.” That was an amazing moment. Two years later, he had certified the entire production line of the company and had become one of the first sustainable fabric suppliers in Italy.&nbsp;So your investment in creating the business sustainably delayed the foundation of the company – why did it become so important to you?The answer is twofold. The first is ethical, but the second was strategic. I could foresee that sustainability would become an important factor of businesses in the future and fortunately reality has shown that my instinct was right. The decision to create a certified business from the ground up also means that everything we do is done in a sustainable way – our materials, work standards and business practices are routinely reviewed to ensure that we are maintaining the certified standards. When I see companies today launching ‘sustainable lines’ I know that it is greenwashing. You cannot be sustainable in one collection, it is a hypocrisy, either you believe in it and practise it throughout your business, or it is a gimmick to sell your products.&nbsp;What are some of the challenges you’ve faced since establishing the business?Well, aside from the initial challenge of finding the suppliers, we have faced many challenges in the past 13 years. Our first line was a kids bed linens collection because I thought mothers would be sensitive to the sustainability aspect, but it really didn't go as expected. I invested a lot of money and almost went broke. I realised that the market wasn’t ready for the sustainable topic to be the main focus of the business, so I developed the business model focusing on the concept of Italian quality, with an international service approach.&nbsp;Italian’s make wonderful products, and Made in Italy still carries a lot of weight internationally, but Italian companies are not good at marketing, customer service etc. So I decided to focus a lot of investment in our service offering, utilising my international experience to create something different and that is how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> came to the yachting industry, where quality and service are most recognised.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332000/image/large-90fdc1caae0a58aa21af956ebab21436.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332000">When did yachting linens become the focus of the business?In about 2013 we decided to approach the yachting sector, making our first sales in 2014 and pulling the company out of some challenging financial times. Then things progressed quickly because we secured <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> as one of our first clients. In fact when I went to Benetti to pitch our business, they had an array of linen suppliers on show, but by the end of our meeting we had secured our position as the exclusive supplier for the shipyard and that really established our relationship with the yachting sector.&nbsp;What do you think they saw in your products? What set&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>&nbsp;apart?The quality of every single detail. Every piece that carries our label is checked by hand right down to the stitching because I want my team to be proud of every piece. We will take as long as it takes for it to be perfect and I think that sets us apart from other companies. I have a huge amount of respect for Hermes, which I believe is the only true example of true luxury brand. They continue to make their bags by hand, they aren’t interested in speed or numbers, they are focused on quality and that is my focus for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331993/image/large-f12efeba8de238fae187efa8cfdede06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331993">How have you maintained that level of control and what do you think are some of your keys to success?With a lot of saying no. The success of a brand is more in the no’s than the yes’s. We’ve been approached by retailers offering display space, but you will never find <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> products on the shelf, we’ve also been approached to create products for under famous brands. Our know-how is precious to me and we will never supply our products under someone else’s label.The company is also completely self financed, so there are no investors telling me to cut budgets and increase production at the sacrifice of quality. I will make no compromises and that is really important to who we are. I also think that the most important thing when you’re an entrepreneur is that you involve everyone in your dream. From your suppliers, to your employees, you have to make them believe and in order to do that, you have to truly believe in yourself and in what you're doing. Moreover, an owner’s suite can be found on the main deck and is complete with both a private office and spacious walk-in closet. With a beam of 10.3-metres, the superyacht also has room to host crew members in six cabins on the lower deck, as well as in the captain's cabin on the full walk-around bridge deck. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331713/image/large-68c3060d816b1a127ee94608aa5c501d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331713">“What makes this project unique is that it was conceived simultaneously as an interior and exterior styling exercise. Meanwhile, the port and starboard integrated seating in the side hulls, bustles for those onboard to unwind.&nbsp;From here, the aft door leads to a vast beach club with a bar at the forward end of the pool, creating a ‘swim-up’ effect. The beach club is also decked out with a fitness area, dayhead, and changing room. The cutting edge concept is developed to optimise charter revenue by including the most highly requested amenities of yachts with success in the charter market. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331126/image/large-a51c0e19c02d22ca58653928e29c19ad.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331126">Head of Charter Management at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson</a> Nicolas Fry seized the opportunity to craft a design that places charter at the forefront, which can cover both running costs and generate revenue for the owner. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331125/image/large-0f860304f48f1ee407673d1fc30e1020.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331125">“We gathered precious insight from brokers, Captains, and clients about their perception of the perfect charter yacht and composed an extensive brief for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dölker + Voges GmbH (Company)">Dölker + Voges</a> that enabled Isabella Knappe to create a beautiful design centred on charter,” Fry explained. “Building the Perfect Charter Yacht with the right shipyard will drive the clients who are interested in renting it, the price competitiveness, and maintenance costs.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331127/image/large-3695885ec0fd3d2bfb618241059cb781.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331127">One example of a charter-oriented feature onboard the yacht is the flexible cabin arrangement. The Perfect Charter Yacht’s six staterooms can be joined in pairs to form three spacious VIP suites, complete with lounge areas. Moreover, sliding doors either divide or unite the suites, making the spaces ideal for families chartering with children in adjacent staterooms.&nbsp;Outside, the vessel’s multi-level aft terraces allow guests to take in the scenery, while a swimming pool, sun loungers, and alfresco dining area allow for outdoor activities. The Perfect Charter Yacht also offers an entertainment lounge decked out with games and a large-screen television, as well as an extensive sundeck containing a barbecue and more lounge seating. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331130/image/large-9cb856f7b42b0f59bfeea2d7ab3641f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331130">At her stern, the yacht houses a beach club with fold-down terraces over the water, alongside direct access to a wellness suite with a sauna and gym. Additionally, a range of tenders and water toys can be stored onboard.Furthermore, the crew quarters and movement of the crew around the yacht was also taken into consideration for this design, in order to promise excellent hospitality for superyacht charter. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331129/image/large-d9472343701a128061a674d56afdaf36.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331129">The Perfect Charter Yacht&nbsp;could be marketed at high season rates of €600,000 per week in the Mediterranean during summer, and in the Caribbean during winter at $650,000 per week.“We would expect the Perfect Charter Yacht to book at least five weeks at her high season summer rate and a further three weeks at low season pricing. During winter, two weeks at the high season rate and two weeks at the slightly lower rate would be easily achievable.
