For our latest edition of Entrepreneur in Yachting for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/issue-48-superyacht-times-newspaper" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Issue 48</a> of the SuperYacht Times newspaper, Francesca Webster sat down with Josh Richardson, Founder and CEO of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tenders &amp; Toys</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303861/image/large-4aed28d1595ca94dd8dbe8c2f1ee84d4.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303861">Can you share the inspiration and vision behind the founding of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a> (SYTT)?&nbsp;Essentially it was due to a need for a go-to company offering management consultancy and procurement for tenders and toys on a new-build project I was working on as a yacht manager. As I could not find anyone who offered what I needed, I thought it was something the world needed! Turns out it did – phew! The tenders and toys had always been a specific area of interest for me as a previous captain and a yacht manager, and I believed I had a very specific skill set which others could use on their projects! Prior to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> I was Chief Instructor of a yacht training school, so had a huge amount of experience in all manner of craft. I also had a job driving boats in films, followed by captaining various sailboats between the UK and NZ, followed by a few years working for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson Yacht Management</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303864/image/large-056c07999a8a74c083bc6d9ac61fd644.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303864">Could you elaborate on some key milestones and challenges that have shaped the company's journey so far?&nbsp;Initially it was just my wife and I working from home but very quickly we grew with seemingly large steps such as getting offices, warehousing and growing our staff. In recent years with Brexit, covid and the Ukraine war this has certainly caused some additional challenges. Some of these are positive, such as us setting up a Monaco company and extending our warehousing to Nice to cater for EU clients.We were ahead of the market (first to market) in the offering we were doing as a business when we set up and that certainly helped us grow as a business. Typical tenders onboard yachts were a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Novurania (Company)">Novurania</a> or a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zodiac Maritime Ltd. (Company)">Zodiac</a> and toys were usually a Jet Ski and towable. As we know this has greatly changed, with tenders and toys being critical to the enjoyment and marketing of a yacht, with a typical 50 metre spending approximately €100k on a new-build toys setup and yachts having multiple, often custom yacht tenders, limousines and chase boats. In the very early days, many tender manufacturers were unknown and poorly marketed, and our experience made a huge difference in helping guide clients into the best craft for their needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303865/image/large-c67e542ebaca2327d33f9f53256808f2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303865">In terms of milestones one significant one was where we won a Queen's Award and met the Royals at Buckingham Palace in 2017. We also won numerous other awards such as the British Marine Federation (BMF) Best Marine Business to work for, BMF Business of the Year and Sunday Times Fasttrack awards showing company growth. Other milestones are some large new-build orders which we got a lot of PR and marketing from. We have been lucky to work with some innovative owners and an example which instantly springs to mind is the original Ulysses U107 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) and U116 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5796" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Multiverse116.0m (380'7&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2018">Multiverse</a>) made by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2996" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kleven Maritime AS (Company)">Kleven</a>. On these we completed the full tenders and toy outfitting, showcasing what it is we do. We are now involved in a lot of large new-builds in a similar capacity. In truth, the larger the project the more value we add and are often considered an extension to a new-build team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203481/image/large-f2ec189e8856bb169bf1f545e7f7c8b7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203481">How has the company evolved to meet the changing demands of the industry?&nbsp;There have been several changes over the years to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> and we are now a Group of companies. This includes:&nbsp;• <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6281" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shipyard Supply co (Company)">Shipyard Supply Co</a>, setup in 2018, specifically aimed at manufacturing and selling our own deck equipment out of our Suffolk, UK HQ. This includes transom fenders, carbon pillar fenders, tender whips and more.• Incorporating <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> MC in 2019, our Monaco business, required due to Brexit but also setup to increase our presence to operational yachts and toy rental in the Med.• Launching <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ROAM (Company)">ROAM</a> boats in 2021, our own brand of aluminium adventure yacht tenders.• Bringing to market our own Superyacht Inflatables, manufactured in the EU and made from a recyclable TPU instead of PVC.&nbsp;A constant theme with our businesses has been the development to offer what the market is after and adjust what we offer to suit, constantly being in evolution. The requests we got back in 2011 are very different to what we now receive. An example of this is that we used to get asked to populate a tender garage and had a very loose brief. Nowadays people are more educated and know specifically what they want. One significant change for us as a business is that now, in 2023, an increasing number of clients are after a manufacturer direct relationship. This is partly due to price, to ensure the best value, service and communication. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/221830/image/large-dcfd9578fc59eae1b469069b3c099f14.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/221830">As the CEO, what strategies have you employed to foster a culture of innovation within the company?Innovation has been easy! Clients simply ask us to develop new things, whether that be products or services. In terms of personnel we are a very relaxed office and everyone mucks in at all levels. Office doors are always open and both Claire and I have always shared all information throughout the company. This is done face to face but we also share info internally on newsletters, days out and corporate events. Everyone is as important as each other, that is why we have things such as company wide bonuses, which are the same value if junior admin to senior management.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303862/image/large-e593931158c77696b4e0c14e5b233bca.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303862">Are there any strategic partnerships or collaborations that have played a significant role in the growth and success of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>?&nbsp;There are a number of ones here, and thinking about this they mostly rotate around who we like, are friends with and trust. Exceptional relationships on the tenders side have been <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5749" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ribeye Tenders (Company)">Ribeye</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4611" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Argo Navis (Company)">Argo Navis</a>. On the toys side it is hard to look past JOBE, Watersports World and Flite.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>&nbsp;has expanded its scope beyond traditional yacht toys. Can you share insights into the diversification of the company's offerings and how this has contributed to its overall success?&nbsp;There are actually a few ways to answer this. We made our name back in 2011 being a one stop shop. Whether this be fenders, toys, tenders, ropes, gym equipment, procurement and much more. I remember us shipping bottled water around the world for one yacht! We have however had a mini reset in recent years and we now do not market ourselves like this. We no longer do procurement of anything other than tenders and toys. We are very good at what we do, often being seen as a management consultancy and having unique industry experience and do not want to compete with procurement companies selling toilet rolls, crockery, cushions and filters. This change was mainly due to a combination of seeing which products do well for us as a business. Procurement was the worst and one which no staff enjoyed. Since making this change, which felt quite brave at the time, profits have more than doubled in three years and clients are respecting us as the authority on all things tenders and toys.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303867/image/large-189d771c72cd6c82c98a9ecb6a4cbdef.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303867">What exciting developments and innovations can we expect from&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>&nbsp;in the near future?&nbsp;We have some great new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ROAM (Company)">ROAM</a> tenders soon to hit the water in 2024. These include a 11 metre owners landing craft, a 9.3 metre and 7.5 metre beachlander, some inflatable landing crafts and an electric RIB. Other than that we are involved in almost all large yacht builds delivered from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and others. On the fun front we are working on plans to cycle across the channel on a hydrofoiling bike and skydive from a helicopter in Monaco!Finally, what advice would you give to prospective entrepreneurs in this sector?I would tell them it is terrible, you will never earn money and to look for a different sector! Go and sell crew uniforms or something! (Company)">Reymond Langton Design</a>, they both bear subtle styling characteristics taken from the mothership’s exterior design, particularly with regards to the window shape, coachroof, and bimini detailing.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/276535/image/large-b9ced7e65a72adc427039e71a53941d1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/276535">The limousine tender offers seating for 12 within its climate-controlled cabin space. The interior is finished to exceptional standards and features custom leather seating, mirror-polished stainless steel trim, leather panelling, clear coat carbon fibre window surrounds, and a beautiful teak floor with an intersecting geometric pattern.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/276536/image/large-988d4946225032b15b3153d64c161000.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/276536"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass Tenders</a> worked closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/56" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reymond Langton Design Ltd. (Company)">Reymond Langton</a> to ensure the interior echoed the design they had implemented aboard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/300" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="H3105.0m (344'6&quot;)Oceanco2000">H3</a> with their refit design. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/276537/image/large-63908d2aed647d9cbb75aa9589fed156.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/276537">Other onboard amenities include an integrated audiovisual system, ambient lighting, a fridge, and forward-facing cameras that provide a view of the tender’s journey shown on twin screens within the cabin.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/276534/image/large-54db5a55a511524c3a9417617a30905c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/276534">The limousine can be boarded via steps forward and aft, as well as the stern platform. Access to the cabin is through sliding glass doors, and an electrical sliding roof system allows for the glass panels to be retracted in either direction. Performance-wise the two tenders are powered by twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1741" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yanmar Co., Ltd. (Company)">Yanmar</a> engines with two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1741" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yanmar Co., Ltd. (Company)">Yanmar</a> stern drives under joystick control.

The Dutch design firm has poured its experience into the superyacht concept, to create a design using the most innovative material and latest design techniques. With a booming market, 2021 saw many sales of new and used yachts alike. Here, we round up the most expensive superyachts sold in 2021.

As the share of very large superyachts within the global fleet has increased in the last decade, the demand for tenders has followed suit. Here, we speak to experts from across the industry to get the inside scoop on what the owners of today (and tomorrow) are looking for from their tenders. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/176919/image/large-ae3e8010b9a42ef595a7da8d56907769.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/176919">Firstly, it is obvious that, as with many things in the superyacht industry, size matters. Tom Southern from the Southampton-based company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoe International (Company)">Pascoe International</a>, explains that the company has noted a marked increase in requests for 10-metre-plus tenders to accommodate the operational needs of the mothership. This trend continues across the pond with Audrey Hodgdon, Director of Sales &amp; Marketing at the Maine-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodgdon Yachts (Company)">Hodgdon Tenders</a> commenting that “as superyachts increase in size, the tenders are relied upon more and more as yachts are likely to be anchored further out.”Notably too, involvement of owners in the tender-choosing process has also seen an uplift, to beneficial effect on the final product. As Tom Southern from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoe International (Company)">Pascoe</a> highlights: “This rise in the level of owner input on the selection and design of tenders is a major positive for the quality of the final product, allowing us to ask the owner directly how they want to use each tender and what they’d like to see done differently from previous ones.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/176917/image/large-93b0acf54dc95714a47f97e62c7034a8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/176917">And what, exactly, is the average owner looking for from their tender? Well, of course, there is no such thing as an average superyacht owner, but our experts have observed some commonalities. Good aesthetics and complementing the mothership in appearance are key.A popular combination of tenders for today’s owners noted by Richard Faulkner, Founder and CEO of Hamble-based company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass Tenders</a>, is for owners to opt for both a stylish limousine tender to transport guests to and from the mothership, and a more practical, open, utility-style tender to serve as a base for watersports and beach activities. As Faulkner highlights: “Tenders are being used for extended periods of time and are required for a wider array of uses – it’s no longer just about getting from superyacht to shore in comfort, but exploring stretches of coastline and facilitating sports activities.”In today’s market therefore, where versatility in tender usage is key, an owner can reap the benefits of a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ tender, which has the ability to take owners and guests from A to B, as well as packing storage for toys, provisions, dive gear and so on. “This modularity is a key feature as having multiple tenders requires a substantial amount of space,” Rene Markus from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DutchCraft (Company)">DutchCraft</a> explains. “Our tenders can easily be transformed from guest shuttles into spacious tenders designed for provisioning.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/176916/image/large-a832018b8f021704fe06671f453e6c55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/176916">Onboard space is, naturally, a key consideration for any owner looking to add tenders to their arsenals, and should be taken into account as early as possible in the design stage of the vessel. As Hodgdon recalls, "One captain recently told us that the decision on the tender is just as important to the owner as which engines go into the superyacht.”Where the tender is stored on board contemporary vessels has seen a shift in recent years, according to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoe International (Company)">Pascoe International</a>’s Tom Southern. “The typical location for tender garages on large yachts was an aft garage with side doors, however as the design trend has moved towards expansive beach clubs with fold-out balconies, we are now seeing more tender garages moving towards the bow in order to accommodate full beam beach clubs.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192145/image/large-b1bc3b5045de8888ae522ac6ff2eaebc.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192145">Finally, there is one trend in tenders which would be remiss to omit: the drive towards sustainability. “The tender niche follows the trends in pleasure yachting,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DutchCraft (Company)">DutchCraft</a>’s Rene Markus. “Driven by environmental changes, owners are definitely becoming more ecologically-savvy and caring about the environment.”&nbsp;This desire from owners to greenify their tenders will also have implications for the future of their designs, meaning that tender builders need to keep abreast of the latest trends. Tender of the Month: The Landing Craft and D-RIB custom pair from Compass Tenders 

Everybody knows that tenders are, in many ways, the lifeblood of all superyacht operations. Whether it’s the crew jumping in the tender and zipping around to pick up groceries and supplies, being transported safely from shore to your superyacht, or simply cruising around small coves, bays, and hard to reach secluded destinations, a tender is an essential part of ensuring the best experience of the superyacht life.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/18962/image/large-b13f4bd6da2bd83f5c9976dfde326971.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18962"> Pascoe's fleet of tendersWith that being said, investment in a good, seaworthy and aesthetically pleasing tender is a wise decision. But with a larger tender requiring a substantial amount of dedicated space on board - sometimes at the sacrifice of living areas - and a tender custom-built to match her mothership a pretty substantial cost, it can be easy to treat the tender as an afterthought. We caught up with the experts at X-Tender, Pascoe, Castoldi and Compass Tenders to hear their thoughts on how to make the most of your tender on board.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/18960/image/large-5f0e71e3991e5c99019c9c5c82b3692a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18960"> Savannah's 9.9m tender from XtenderMany superyacht owners would argue that the investment in time, energy and money into a beautiful, big tender is not worth it when you can get a no-nonsense tender for a fraction of the cost. What makes the investment worth it?Pascoe: When it comes to selecting tenders, owners should remember the saying: ‘Buy cheap - buy twice’. Often any saving on the initial purchase will be lost in on-going maintenance when it becomes apparent that the less established and cheaper brands are not able to offer the level of in-service support and aftersales care that comes from a dedicated superyacht tender brand.Compass Tenders: A good tender doesn't have to be a 'big' tender. A good tender has to be safe, dry and give the owner and his guests an appropriate level of creature comforts. My thought is that it's the correct investment for an owner to get the best tender he can and that investment should be in line with the mothership. There is no substitute - guests need to be safe and dry whilst travelling between shore and superyacht and with yachts anchored offshore more and more, to not be able to make it ashore because of wind or sea state just isn’t an option. At the end of the day, it's all about guest safety and comfort, which doesn't include getting soaking wet!Castoldi: Firstly, I don’t think the focus should be on the size, it should be on the price to quality ratio, reliability and performance. You can get large tenders which are substantially much less expensive than a small custom tender, for example. But either way, I don’t think that investment in a custom tender is worth it considering that a bespoke tender must be considered a prototype, surely not free from all the defects of the one-off product. At Castoldi, we make tenders produces in series, deeply tested, that work for thousands of hours, ending up with a superior product. You just can’t get it right the first time, in my opinion, so these custom tenders that are worth millions of euros… it’s slightly absurd!Xtenders: Important to notice: custom does not mean good. There are custom builders that use the same techniques and quality finish as production boats. Regardless, and despite the relatively small size of the custom tender market, the differences in build quality and technologies are big. Smaller tenders are easier to store on board of the yacht, but that is where the advantages end.One who wants a small, cheap, mass-produced tender probably doesn’t have much experience with tenders. First, the majority of the mass produced tenders are of poor build quality, hence they can be heavy and difficult to maintain. Companies just have to take major shortcuts to bring the price down and stay competitive in the business-to-consumer market.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/18961/image/large-57015a25ff5864a8fc63330d2196f5d8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18961">What impact does a good tender on the superyacht experience for owner, guests and crew?Castoldi: A good tender is extremely important for any superyacht. When a yacht is moored up, all of the movements from the boat will be undertaken on the tender - from grocery shopping to transporting guests to shore. Tenders should be seen as work boats, they never stop. So on a practical level, a good tender is essential. Furthermore, if you have a luxury yacht and you’re tender is some little outboard, then it doesn’t make sense. Guests want to experience the level of luxury they get on a superyacht with every element of the experience, and that includes the tender.&nbsp;Pascoe: Tenders play a key role in the overall superyacht experience for owners and their guests. With large yachts forced to anchor offshore, the tenders are the only representation of the mothership at the dockside and the first element of the yacht that guests will come into contact with when they start their time onboard.A good tender should, therefore, show the same attention to detail and the mothership whilst performing perfectly in all weather conditions with complete reliability. If a guest arrives by private aircraft, is chauffeur driven to a marina only to be transferred to the superyacht by a basic leisure boat which covers them in spray during the passage then the tender becomes the weak link in the entire process.Xtenders: A good custom tender allows the owner and the crew to present their requirements and wishes before the design starts. That means that they should get exactly what they need. The owner will obviously enjoy the accurately matched to his yacht styling and finish of the tender. The tender will be a true part of the yachting experience. For the crew, it means, a tender that is easy to store on board, good after-sales service and specific usability features that are included into the design.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/18963/image/large-a8db54f53acb488521f103b71bc07afc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18963">Black Pearl Limousine from Pascoe InternationalWhat are some of the more common mistakes made when selecting a tender?Compass Tenders: To avoid mistakes, careful appraisal of the tenders’ use and the age groups the tender will be used for is essential. For me, RIB's aren't a great option as superyacht guest tenders as they tend to have low freeboard, so they’re potentially wet and present a feel of sitting on the tender, rather than in it. Also, elegant and safe boarding can be challenging with a RIB, as you generally have to stand on the air-filled tubes.Xtenders: Quality varies a lot per brand, testing the product and gathering experience of other users is essential. Some clients insist on certain features that at the end badly influence a total design and durability of the tenders.Castoldi: In my opinion, buying a one-off custom tender is the biggest mistake you can make. Sure, on yachts of 100+ metres, okay, but on a smaller boat, I just think it doesn’t make sense. Owners should invest in a decent sized tender, reliable and that performs well. In fact, the tender should be as big as possible. The bigger the tender, the better it is. <img src="/uploads/store/photo/18964/image/large-9f8f0784a03a9876afb0544e92d1eee4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/18964"> Madame Gu's limo tender from Compass TendersPart of a lack of investment in tenders is the fact that there is simply no room on board many superyachts to accommodate a substantial additional vessel. For an owner considering whether to sacrifice living space for tender space, what would you say? Xtenders: Without a doubt, rearranging interior space to fit the largest tender possible will maximise the yachting experience. Especially for those who fancy active leisure activities. In 8 years I have never heard an owner saying that his tenders are too big. A bigger tender will extend the reach of the yacht without sacrificing the comfort. It will also connect the yacht and the shores and ensure the unique experience starts already during the transfer to the yacht and ends when dropping off back at the vast land.Another trend on bigger yachts is to have a larger number of specific boats such as sailing boats, wakeboard boats etc. It may be a better option to create a dedicated space for a larger multipurpose tender instead of stuffing the yacht with numerous smaller ones.Compass Tenders: We are finding that tender stowage areas are becoming more and more challenging in relation to crew and owner expectations. Tenders can quickly become compromised through lack of stowage space. It's not only length that needs to be considered, it's height. This is becoming more and more relevant to open tenders as well as limousine tenders, as owners are demanding solid T top biminis to shield seating areas. If crew members are going to be required to supervise long periods of watersports activities, then shade from the sun is also a must. Again the LOA and guest use of the mothership should be carefully considered so the appropriate tenders can be built or sourced.&nbsp;Castoldi: I would always recommend sacrificing a bit of living space to accommodate a bigger tender. This doesn’t always have to be such a big sacrifice, though, with more and more yachts featuring completely different configurations. Tender of the month: the Jupiter Limo tender

Here we sit down with owner and CEO of the British brand, Richard Faulkner, who has been building and repairing yachts and tenders at his workshops on the River Hamble for over 30 years and shares his insights into the importance of getting your tender right.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166055/image/large-8b0f2ee37bf3d3a19008f2f95a3bce64.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166055"> Tell us some of the main evolutions of the company over the years.In 2004, our core business was building, repairing and servicing racing yachts. With the assistance of Ed Wingate the Design Manager and Katharine Dominy the Operations Manager, the business has grown since then to have some 3000/m2 of workshop space, employing over 50 craftsmen, five designers and five additional office team members. A dedicated stores/ordering department, engineering and joinery workshops and our climate-controlled spraybooths, gives us the benefit of in-house quality control.What have been some of your most significant projects?All our projects are significant in their own way! One that stands out particularly is our first limo tender. I remember at the time we received the Tango Limousine Tender there were a few people in the industry that doubted our capabilities, but we went on to build an award-winning tender that became renowned for its styling, ride and comfort and, most importantly, the client loves it. This also marked our entry into the limousine tender market. Following this project, we moved directly with the Tango client’s build team onto their next project; Madame GU. For Madame Gu we produced two award-winning tenders for this high-profile project. More recent significant projects include the Lady Lara Limousine and Sports tenders.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166056/image/large-bbea09525656fe6cd1467f316c42e404.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166056"><img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166057/image/large-56b80c36dcd144878696affb984c3858.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166057">We’ve heard you have a new ‘platform' tender under development, a starting point for clients to then customise. Can you tell us a bit more about that?Our new platform tender, which will be called the Compass Latitude Limousine, will be announced in detail ahead of the <a href="http://www.monacoyachtshow.com/en/" target="_blank">Monaco Yacht Show</a>, but we will be using a tried and tested hull design with a range from 9.5-metres to 11-metres in length. We will use a leg driven engine package from either Volvo or Yanmar and our preferred systems for items like Air Conditioning, roof mechanisms, door mechanisms and electrical install. This ‘platform’ will still have several customisable options and, to some extent, we have been using this concept with our 9-10-metre Open Tender models which we have successfully produced for Ocean Victory, Lady Lara, Dilbar, Project Jupiter and two further projects which are in build.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166058/image/large-da206295b0ce71b78501ceead00f5b12.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166058"> At what stage of the build process should an owner be considering their tender requirements? I strongly believe that an owner should be considering their tenders at the first concept meetings with their design and build team. Time after time, we feel that we could have offered a better tender package if more consideration for the use of the tenders was given earlier in the design process. The size and layout of the tender garages generally dictate the tender you can fit on board. The crane capacity also needs to reflect the type of tender required. These must clearly reflect the intended use of the mothership and the client’s expectations of use. Also, once you get over 90-metres, a dedicated tender for crew operations, as a sensible workhorse, can be hugely beneficial - but this is often overlooked.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/166059/image/large-006b4da9160e3a55af8eb2b37220aee7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/166059">What are some of the benefits of a custom tender build?The main benefit of a custom tender is that we can produce exactly want the client wishes, in both style signature and operational capabilities for a given length, beam and stowed height. With larger yachts now often at anchor, it’s usually the first experience the owner and/or guests have of the mothership and the enjoyment it offers.
