There have been 25 reported yacht casualties this year – not all have been totally lost, but a good portion have been. The term “casualty” covers fire, collisions and seizures. Six yachts have been severely damaged by fire; two yachts have been seized due to tax fraud; while a further 17 have been damaged from collisions.&nbsp;Fire damage in 2021<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/202890/image/large-508eea58fa9ccad64fa67633b1fc04d9.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/202890"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/81841/image/large-916780ddf83c2e6c42b4b15e6a1fb4bd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/81841">During the early hours of the 11th August 2021, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>’s 29.06-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9005" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Reine D'Azur29.06m (95'4&quot;)Sanlorenzo2019">Reine D’Azur</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53523" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="29m Sanlorenzo yacht Reine d’Azur catches fire in France (2021-08-11 15:15:00 +0200)">caught fire during a charter trip</a> in Port-Cros, Hyères, France. She was only launched in 2019, making the accident all the more devastating. The seven passengers and crew were safely evacuated, but the yacht has been damaged beyond repair.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/204720/image/large-3f8ba78ce625a748d984fadade3ef47d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/204720">September saw a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53622" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fire severely damages 25m yacht Miss Dunia in Massachusetts (2021-08-31 15:15:00 +0200)">second victim to fire</a>, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a>' 24.99-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8028" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miss Dunia24.99m (81'12&quot;)Horizon Yachts2008">Miss Dunia</a> caught alight on the 30th of the month at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3170" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pope's Island Marina (Company)">Pope's Island Fleet Marina</a> in Massachusetts, United States. She had been seafaring since 2008, but unfortunately, this incident has put a stop to this as she was totally gutted by the blaze. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/204990/image/large-fc3ef9659fa91db2e2b4e7883682d8c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/204990"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/169632/image/large-80cc8703d02bf1a72cc24f06807c6c44.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/169632"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1756" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tansu Yachts (Company)">Tansu Yachts</a>’ 35.2-metre explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3411" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Siempre35.2m (115'6&quot;)Tansu Yachts2010">Siempre</a> was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53647" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tansu motor yacht Siempre has sunk after a fire in Marina di Olbia (2021-09-06 09:30:00 +0200)">devastated by fire on the 6th September</a> and is damaged beyond repair. The incident happened in the Marina of Olbia, Italy. Luckily no one was hurt, even though the crew were believed to be sleeping onboard at the time of the event. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3411" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Siempre35.2m (115'6&quot;)Tansu Yachts2010">Siempre</a> was launched in 2010 and had proved to be a strong companion for long-distance voyages. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/209773/image/large-6d64c14447080ffa8258497a5dfdca7a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/209773"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208004/image/large-2b933408a777d3fe3e4024bb76a99a26.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208004">The brand-new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5302" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maori Yacht (Company)">Maori</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11370" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mama-G24.2m (79'5&quot;)Maori Yacht2021">Mama-G</a>&nbsp;then caught ablaze on the 21st October when she was en route to Porto Corallo in Sardinia. The fire was severe, but she has been listed as “out of service”, meaning there is scope for her to be refloated. No one was hurt during the incident, and the local Coast Guard was able to put out the blaze.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213610/image/large-5909a4c489777479207a78c28bcf7fda.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213610">A huge fire broke out at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3172" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hinckley Yacht Services (Company)">Hinckley Yacht Services</a> in Portsmouth on the 10th December that engulfed two superyachts: the the 32-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1490" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Ocean Marine (Company)">Southern Ocean</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Danneskjold32.0m (104'12&quot;)Southern Ocean Marine2009">Danneskjold</a>, and the 30.53-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Alexander (Company)">Ocean Alexander</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Drinkability30.53m (100'2&quot;)Ocean Alexander2017">Drinkability</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Drinkability30.53m (100'2&quot;)Ocean Alexander2017">Drinkability</a> was the first to catch alight and has been completely destroyed, while <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2627" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Danneskjold32.0m (104'12&quot;)Southern Ocean Marine2009">Danneskjold</a> could potentially be refloated, as she is said to be severely damaged but it is not yet known if she is beyond repair. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29424/image/large-c81dfdcb1421baba9938a98c1dfba6c4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29424">Fire damage over the yearsIf we compare the amount of yachts in the above 30-metre category that have caught fire over the last six years, the numbers for this year aren’t out of the ordinary. It’s an unfortunate fact that fires and accidents do occur. We lost two yachts in 2015 due to fire. Five in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2019, though, there was an unprecedented number of fires and we lost an incredible 12 yachts. &nbsp;In total then, 35 yachts have fallen victim and become severely damaged due to fire since 2015.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213676/image/large-01ae92b4630a0ecad22c63a39eb4143c.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213676">This number is pretty substantial if we look at the figures back to 1945. We are sure that our database is still missing a few superyachts, but we estimate that in total we have lost around 200 yachts since 1945 and a further 300 commissioned as out of service. That means that around 18 percent of all superyachts losses occurred since 2015.Collisions and wrecksFire hasn't been the only cause of damage this year, as a further 17 yachts were damaged from collisions and wrecks. Most of the yachts are repairable from their incidents – but will still require substantial maintenance to get them back to seaworthy condition. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/202693/image/large-9377377577aea12a50f3e5fbbbc8a210.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/202693">The most tragic casulty this year was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>’s classic 24.38-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3522" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Malizia24.38m (79'12&quot;)Perini Navi1989">Malizia</a>, which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53515" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi sailing yacht Malizia shipwrecked on Stromboli (2021-08-10 17:45:00 +0200)">crashed into the coast of the Aeolian</a> island of Stromboli, just off Sicily. The accident is believed to have been caused by a failure with the navigational controls. There were five guests and three crew members onboard the 1989 yacht during the incident, none of whom were hurt.&nbsp;

Yachts lost in 2021: 6 fires and 17 collisions

Local news coverage reported that a Portsmouth shipyard fire had broken out and engulfed two superyachts on Friday morning. Fire crews worked hard to control the blaze as the yachts were situated directly next to a smaller shed full of highly flammable vintage yachts, fortunately, they got it under control before it could spread.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213610/image/large-5909a4c489777479207a78c28bcf7fda.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213610"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/213608/image/large-37e444956ce0a4eebf8fed984dd7b165.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/213608">The Department of Environmental Management was on the scene because of concerns around the air quality as the powerboat was made of fibreglass. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/54023" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="32m sailing yacht Danneskjold sold (2021-11-05 11:15:00 +0100)">Danneskjold was only sold in November</a>, it is quite likely that she was at the shipyard for a short refit period before setting sail with her new owners in the Spring.

Drinkability and Danneskjold destroyed in fire

Two superyachts, Drinkability and Danneskjold were engulfed in Portsmouth shipyard fire on Friday.
