Boat shows often host some tantalising older yachts in addition to the latest models and new arrivals. The last edition of the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palm Beach International Boat Show - 2022">Palm Beach International Boat Show</a> was no exception. Moored at a floating dock at the northern end of the show, we came across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a>, an iconic 85-foot (26-metre) motor yacht for sale with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="1 Ocean Yachts (Company)">1 Ocean Yachts</a> that was custom built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodgdon Yachts (Company)">Hodgdon</a> Shipyard in 2013 at their Boothbay facility in Maine.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223078/image/large-a53d2b819726111615c1c68711ab2157.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223078"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a> was ahead of her time when she was delivered a year later. The high-quality outfitting is evident in the Miele-equipped galley-dinette, reassuringly solid doors and rattle-free handles, although guests and crew very rarely slept aboard a yacht conceived as a dayboat – one reason why the interior is in immaculate condition.“This was a custom build with very high specifications that spared no expense,” says José Arana Muñoz de Cote, owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4667" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="1 Ocean Yachts (Company)">1 Ocean Yachts</a>. “The owner is renowned for keeping all his yachts in tip-top condition, regardless of the cost. For her last major refit in 2016, she went back to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodgdon Yachts (Company)">Hodgdon</a>, the original builders, when they also installed a Seakeeper gyro stabiliser for more comfort at anchor.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223028/image/large-ed72f67ef52f68c5fd4d2c2ea3722253.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223028"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223026/image/large-0e48a2606a4e68db6c8f26bc15516f27.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223026"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223022/image/large-d43e233b998eea0a17bb79c6f5b3a9fe.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223022">During our tour of the boat we chatted with Captain ‘Blurge’ Brown, who has been running the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zarkava 26.52m (87'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2010">Zarkava</a> sistership in the Med for the last 10 years. He was originally engaged to work on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a> and remembers her undergoing wind tunnel tests to avoid excessive wind noise on deck, and visiting the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodgdon Yachts (Company)">Hodgdon</a> shipyard during the final stage of construction.“Performance was very important for the boss,” he points out. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zarkava 26.52m (87'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2010">Zarkava</a> was launched with the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> 1350 engines, but when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a> was fitted with the 1800 units he decided to put the new 1900s in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zarkava 26.52m (87'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2010">Zarkava</a>. Whenever a new engine came out, he wanted it!&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223024/image/large-cac99b9fd6113860efca6a391e147423.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223024"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223023/image/large-f2143e01e75d8f40214b3bd663b4a449.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223023">With her new engines <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zarkava 26.52m (87'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2010">Zarkava</a>’s redline performance leapt from around 50 knots to over 60, although Captain Brown admits that conditions have to be perfect to achieve those kinds of speeds. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a>’s official top speed is 58 knots and at a cruising speed of 37 knots she has a range of around 400nm.&nbsp;Arana Muñoz de Cote believes there are two kinds of potential clients for a super high-speed yacht like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a>. “On the one hand had you have the crypto guys looking for something really unique that can get them to the Bahamas quickly, and then you have the experienced owners who appreciate the build quality and are looking for a fast chase boat for a larger yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223082/image/large-36c3b74c94edc547d56380f27cf60f83.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223082">The reason for the sale of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/11944" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Valyra 25.91m (85'0&quot;)Hodgdon Yachts2013">Valyra</a> is that the owner’s busy grown-up children are using the family boats less, but by all accounts their father still enjoys pushing the envelope:&nbsp;“Not so long ago we had a race with another boat that had the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1441" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MAN (Company)">MAN</a> 2000 engines,” recalls Captain Brown. “The only reason we had to slow down was because the boss was spilling his coffee!”

As the share of very large superyachts within the global fleet has increased in the last decade, the demand for tenders has followed suit. Here, we speak to experts from across the industry to get the inside scoop on what the owners of today (and tomorrow) are looking for from their tenders. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/176919/image/large-ae3e8010b9a42ef595a7da8d56907769.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/176919">Firstly, it is obvious that, as with many things in the superyacht industry, size matters. Tom Southern from the Southampton-based company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoe International (Company)">Pascoe International</a>, explains that the company has noted a marked increase in requests for 10-metre-plus tenders to accommodate the operational needs of the mothership. This trend continues across the pond with Audrey Hodgdon, Director of Sales &amp; Marketing at the Maine-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hodgdon Yachts (Company)">Hodgdon Tenders</a> commenting that “as superyachts increase in size, the tenders are relied upon more and more as yachts are likely to be anchored further out.”Notably too, involvement of owners in the tender-choosing process has also seen an uplift, to beneficial effect on the final product. As Tom Southern from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoe International (Company)">Pascoe</a> highlights: “This rise in the level of owner input on the selection and design of tenders is a major positive for the quality of the final product, allowing us to ask the owner directly how they want to use each tender and what they’d like to see done differently from previous ones.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/176917/image/large-93b0acf54dc95714a47f97e62c7034a8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/176917">And what, exactly, is the average owner looking for from their tender? Well, of course, there is no such thing as an average superyacht owner, but our experts have observed some commonalities. Good aesthetics and complementing the mothership in appearance are key.A popular combination of tenders for today’s owners noted by Richard Faulkner, Founder and CEO of Hamble-based company <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass Tenders</a>, is for owners to opt for both a stylish limousine tender to transport guests to and from the mothership, and a more practical, open, utility-style tender to serve as a base for watersports and beach activities. In addition, a dedicated crew tender can also be accommodated for where space allows, so that guest tenders are reserved for the owner’s use. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/21662/image/large-7b9853502fc61f93f304ce952a0be3e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21662">In addition, with the often-noted trend of 2020’s owners becoming increasingly adventurous with how they use their yachts – seeking out locations further afield – the tenders have adapted to match. As Faulkner highlights: “Tenders are being used for extended periods of time and are required for a wider array of uses – it’s no longer just about getting from superyacht to shore in comfort, but exploring stretches of coastline and facilitating sports activities.”In today’s market therefore, where versatility in tender usage is key, an owner can reap the benefits of a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ tender, which has the ability to take owners and guests from A to B, as well as packing storage for toys, provisions, dive gear and so on. “This modularity is a key feature as having multiple tenders requires a substantial amount of space,” Rene Markus from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DutchCraft (Company)">DutchCraft</a> explains. “Our tenders can easily be transformed from guest shuttles into spacious tenders designed for provisioning.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/176916/image/large-a832018b8f021704fe06671f453e6c55.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/176916">Onboard space is, naturally, a key consideration for any owner looking to add tenders to their arsenals, and should be taken into account as early as possible in the design stage of the vessel. As Hodgdon recalls, "One captain recently told us that the decision on the tender is just as important to the owner as which engines go into the superyacht.”Where the tender is stored on board contemporary vessels has seen a shift in recent years, according to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4716" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pascoe International (Company)">Pascoe International</a>’s Tom Southern. “The typical location for tender garages on large yachts was an aft garage with side doors, however as the design trend has moved towards expansive beach clubs with fold-out balconies, we are now seeing more tender garages moving towards the bow in order to accommodate full beam beach clubs.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/192145/image/large-b1bc3b5045de8888ae522ac6ff2eaebc.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/192145">Finally, there is one trend in tenders which would be remiss to omit: the drive towards sustainability. “The tender niche follows the trends in pleasure yachting,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DutchCraft (Company)">DutchCraft</a>’s Rene Markus. “Driven by environmental changes, owners are definitely becoming more ecologically-savvy and caring about the environment.”&nbsp;This desire from owners to greenify their tenders will also have implications for the future of their designs, meaning that tender builders need to keep abreast of the latest trends. Hodgdon Tenders presents luxury 8-11m Crossover line

Burgess has announced that the 29.9-metre sailing yacht Windcrest has been sold in an in-house deal. With their Miami and New York offices representing both the buyer and seller, Burgess have secured the sale within just five months of the yacht coming on to the sales market.

Built in 2006, Windcrest is the product of a collaboration between Fontaine Design Group and Hodgdon Yachts of East Boothbay Maine. The elegant sailing yacht accommodates up to eight guests across three cabins, including a master suite and two twin rooms. The vessel also accommodates up to four members of crew.

With a 300hp Lugger engine and three large sails, the yacht has a top speed of 11 knots, with a cruising speed of around 9 knots. Windcrest marks the 11th sailing yacht Burgess has sold in the last 18 months, with an average length of 40.13-metres. At the time of sale, Windcrest was listed at an asking price of $5,450,000.

Hodgdon Yacht Services has today announced that repair work on the 47.15 metre ketch Asolare (ex: Scheherazade) has been completed. Refit of the 47.15m superyacht Asolare completed

One of the most visible pieces of equipment carried by a yacht is its tender. It is therefore no surprise that many owners are eschewing production tender models and opting for more custom designs to complement their yacht. So are custom tenders becoming the norm?<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158130/image/large-51133660e3bff6241a7a30a6f7c958ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158130">Vripack agrees that bespoke tenders are a growing trend. “Our customers are highly influenced by their fast moving environment,” they say. “New techniques result in disruptive innovations which form standards that not only challenge our industry but also the industries around us. The need for personalisation or the increase in custom design demands is just a logical result of these developments.”Hodgdon Yachts, which built the two 8.5 metre custom tenders for the 62 metre Feadship Sea Owl, believe that the growing numbers of custom tenders is having a snowball effect. “As more custom tenders appear on the scene more owners and their teams are more aware of the benefits of a custom build,” said Ed Roberts, Head of Sales and Marketing for Hodgdon Yachts.<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AKlw_DuHADQ" width="560"></iframe>Many tender clients are working with the designer of their yacht to ensure complementary styling between the two vessels. One example is Andrew Winch Yacht Design, which designed both Sea Owl and her accompanying tenders. “In recent years, the market is moving more towards custom made tenders,” says the Andrew Winch yacht design team. “Clients want unique designs to complement their superyacht.”Gunnar Vikungar, Managing Director of Vikal, is well placed to comment on the custom tender market, with Vikal having delivered 54 custom builds over the last 24 years. Vikungar is cautious about the increasing use of the custom label, believing that there are still very few fully custom tender projects. “I do not think the overall tender market is moving in a custom direction; custom is a loose and much abused term,” he explains. ”My personal view is that a custom tender is a one off built from from original bespoke moulds, although a production builder who modifies his tenders to suit a client may also call his tenders 'custom'.”How involved clients are in the design of a custom tender can vary. “Our clients are from a broad church and their involvement varies greatly, from the client trusting his advisors to take care of business to intimate involvement in every stage of design,’ says Vikungar. But regardless, “with tenders increasingly being seen as ‘mini yachts’, they [owners] want to ensure the design of the exterior and interior is unique,” says the Andrew Winch yacht design team.When dealing with custom requests, a key challenge for designers is to marry form and function.“Often it becomes a very involved process to make reality of an idea that looks good in a rendering,” says Roberts. “Tenders have to do more than function; they have to fit into the mothership,” says the Andrew Winch yacht design team. “They are the showpiece of a yacht at dock side: the first point of boarding the mothership and they have to fit into the dock.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158131/image/large-07e3bb10d82b5bd16b63e78180f5ac77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158131">If the functionality of the tender is too neglected the end result may be a tender that is wholly impractical. “An owner may be pleased to have his tastes truthfully represented in the tender but the crew charged with daily operations will quietly resent the builder,” says Vikungar. “They will look for ways to use the tender as little as possible and on large yachts where they will have a number of tenders at their disposal they quietly vote with their feet.”One positive effect of the increased importance of tenders to the overall look of the yacht is that the tender design is increasingly being addressed much more early on in yacht build programs. “In the old days the tender was often an afterthought,” says Roberts. “Now it is more common that we get called in early to collaborate on the size, capacity and configuration of the tender bay; we wish more programs would recognise the importance of involving us early in the process.”Perhaps the best way to answer the question of whether the tender market is moving towards customisation is that while truly custom tender projects are still in the minority we are certainly seeing increased customisation of tenders. Set to kick off on Saturday 26 December 2015, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race will see an international fleet of 110 yachts from 28 nations gather at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sydney to embark on the iconic yacht race that covers over 628 nm to reach Hobart on the Tasman Island. The International Superyacht Society (ISS) announced the winners of the 2015 Design &amp; Leadership Awards yesterday at the 25th anniversary of ISS’s Awards Gala in Fort Lauderdale. In terms of the superyachts, award categories are separated into motor and sailing yachts in various size ranges, best interior design and best refit, in which six yachts were listed as winners with the 51.8 metre Elfje awarded two titles in the ceremony, including best interior.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/156961/image/large-f088ba19c303a25b2bdb9cb136fa45bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/156961">The 33.04 metre Win Win from Baltic was awarded best sailing yacht between 24 to 40 metres, whilst best sailing yacht of 40+ metres was awarded to Elfje, built by Royal Huisman. Hodgdon launches 12 metre limousine tender

Following the close of Les Voiles de St. Barth regatta recently, it has been announced that the superyacht Comanche has broken a new record whilst competing. A regular participant in regattas all over the world, Jim Clark commissioned Comanche to be built at Hodgdon Yachts, with the sole purpose of building a sailing vessel capable of breaking records - something in which he has certainly achieved since her completion in 2014.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153820/image/large-f0f1245101b2b9c23245a3f37d0beb5f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153820">The first record was already set during her construction at the Maine, U.S. based shipyard Hodgdon Yachts, becoming one of the largest single-hull infusions undertaken stateside. The second was set the 15th of April on the water, when Comanche established a speed record of 2 hours, 33 minutes, and 4 seconds in the Maxi 1 class during the race in St. Barth.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/153821/image/large-cde4536e2bebfebcfe865c376a1c982c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/153821">During the four racing days, Comanche took all the line honors in her division and placed second, just behind Rambler 88, with 12 points on the scoreboard according with the corrected-time performances. Completed in 2004 by the US shipyard Hodgdon Yachts, the 47.15 metre ketch Asolare was originally built under the name Scheherezade and, at the time, was the largest cold-molded yacht ever built. A decade after her launch she was due for a minor refit, and in Autumn of last year, she arrived at the Front Street Shipyard in Maine for her Lloyd’s survey, a fresh paint and systems maintenance.<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" scrolling="no" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/cUcxNxgMwpI" width="560"></iframe>Describing the systems work on the yacht, the shipyard comments, “Asolare’s systems are comprehensive, which meant we had to put all of our best technicians aboard. Working with the yacht’s crew, our team identified several updates that would put Asolare back in the water with more comfort for the crew and her guests."“Our electrical team ran a significant amount of new wire through the hull and mast for computer, electronics and entertainment systems. Some of Asolare’s hydraulics also needed maintenance, so we made upgrades to the most critical systems on board the boat.”She'll spend the winter cruising in warmer climes and is scheduled to return to Front Street Shipyard in Spring for some additional work ahead of the summer season.By Gemma Fottles

A new participant in the 6thth annual Les Voiles de Saint Barth has been announced. The owners of the super-maxi Comanche, Jim Clark and his wife Kristy Hinz-Clark are following one major goal with their boat: to cross the line first and to beat existing ocean records.The comparison with a Formula 1 racing car may come from Comanche’s ability to approach 32 knots. Built at Hodgon Yachts in Maine and launched in October 2014, this 100’ black and red beauty with a sleek shape and a high mast, will definitely be one of the yachts to keep an eye on. He has participated three times in the America’s Cup and twice in the Volvo Ocean races. The international 23-member crew also involves navigator Stan Honey from the US and tactician Kevin Harrap from New Zealand and has huge chances of winning the races in Saint Barth.Comanche’s first regatta was the Sydney-Hobart in December 2014. Short before crossing the finish line and after a neck-and-neck-race with Wild Oats XI, Comanche has lost this race. But this regatta was a first prove that this sailing yacht has huge potential in both medium and strong winds, with serious acceleration.Before the 2015 Transatlantic Race in June and Les Voiles de Saint Barth in April ’15, Comanche will participate in the Sydney-Hobart again. The London Yacht, Jet & Prestige Car Show 2015

Gemma FottlesHodgdon Yachts has launched the 100 ft. pre-preg carbon racing yacht Comanche, for well known superyacht owner Jim Clark. Hodgdon Yachts launch Comanche

Hodgdon has recently opened a Monaco based office, appointing a new European sales and marketing director in the process. Hodgon Yachts announces one of the largest hull infusions ever in USA

Hodgdon Yachts delivers superyacht limo-tender

Scheherazade skillfully outmaneuvered the fleet Sunday to take first place honors and winner overall at Shipyard Cup X. True to the spirit of the event, the "winner overall trophy" was an engraved bucket and large bottle of Dom Pérignon. The bucket was filled with champagne and passed around to the winning crew. Scheherazade's owner drew great cheers from the crowd as he took his turn. In Sunday's event, <a href="#managed-by-application" data-legacy="true" data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/923">Scheherazade</a> was followed by Rapture and Whisper in the daily results, in which the boats and the race committee were able to take advantage of breaks in the fog to complete day 2's racing. The Best Duck Boat in Boothbay Award to Tenacious for her owners sounding duck calls as they left the harbor. The Best Start Possibly Under Power Award to the 1939 Schooner When and If. The Winginít Award to Rapture for their "wing and wing" downwind run on day 1. The Best Main Uniform Award to the Captain of Virago for sailing in a terrific authentic Maine flannel shirt. The Best Smoke and Mirrors Award to Scheherazade for their "fake jibe", which smoked their nearest competitor. The Best Spirit of the Regatta Award to the Sumurun for starting day 2 in Flintstones' costumes. The Where’s Tito Award, in honor of Shipyard Cup sponsor, Tito's Handmade American Vodka, for the person who shall remain nameless that "borrowed" the full size poster of Tito himself. Following on the heels of two custom tenders for Oceanco Y706, ( M/Y Seven Seas), Hodgdon has signed a 10.5m custom limo tender and 10.5 m custom open tender for another Oceanco client. The new build design and construction specifications for these Michael Peters Yacht Designs (Sarasota, FL), were developed by A.J. Hodgdon Yachts Inc. is pleased to report that Windcrest, the 98' ketch launched last July, performed incredibly well in the St. Barth's Bucket regatta. Windcrest finished 2nd in her class and 3rd in the fleet. <div align="center">

</div> Over the three days of sailing with winds ranging from 10 to 25 knots, Windcrest was fast upwind and held her own with the much larger boats on the reaches and runs. The sailing systems worked flawlessly, with the only thing broken being the starboard mizzen runner tag line. The reliability and performance of the electrical and mechanical systems was impressive. Other yachts in the fleet experienced bilges full of hydraulic oil, broken steering gear, shredded sails, captive winch failures, and an engine room fire. Twenty eight yachts participated in the regatta, ranging from 86' to 289', with Windcrest the third smallest. In many ways this weekend was the first time many in the yachting world saw Windcrest – it was a great debut!
