With a penchant for speed and a requirement to reach some of the most remote and daring dive locations in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had a challenge. A challenge that a ready-made solution could never cater to. When speaking to the father and son team behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, custom superyacht tender builders based in Perth, Australia, their combined passion and experience for their industry immediately shines through. SYT chats with Gunnar and Lynden Vikingur about what custom means at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, how the industry is developing, and most importantly, the strides they have made in the innovation of hybrid electric propulsion systems for their tenders. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194881/image/large-906c02ada528698d204bb8dc1f23e22c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194881">With a pedigree dating back over 35 years, the company had serendipitous beginnings when renowned British-Australian yacht designer Jon Bannenberg approached Gunnar Vikingur, Director of the shipyard, and asked if he might consider constructing a custom tender for a project he was working on. For the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, who had until then been building and repairing local composite yachts, it was a golden opportunity, that they immediately jumped at, building their first tender for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Island</a>, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/233" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coral Ocean72.54m (237'12&quot;)Lürssen Yachts1994">Coral Ocean</a>, in 1994. Though it was another four years before their next commission, Gunnar knew he had found a great entry into the market and as Lynden put it, “we subsequently carved a niche for an unusual product, in the most unlikely of locations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194920/image/large-293f9c88ac4969cba12abe0b317d6c90.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194920">Today it is clear that their perseverance paid off, having just delivered two more tenders, the company has now constructed more than 75 bespoke vessels to some of the finest yachts in the industry. Gunnar commented, “we have been extremely busy for the last 25 years, and have delivered more custom tenders to larger superyachts than any other company in the world, which is particularly impressive given the competitive nature of the market.” Though in Gunnar’s opinion the word custom is overused, the vessels produced at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> are custom in the truest sense. Every yacht is made to specific and highly unique specifications, “often clients don’t know exactly what they want, and we work with them and their teams to create their bespoke tender”, and as Lynden stated, “we can create anything that a client desires.” It is not only the designs that make the tenders unique, most elements of the tenders, are handmade and hand finished, a rarity in the modern mechanised world, &nbsp;which also determines that no two vessels are ever the same. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195129/image/large-b0dccebab8a1ef3cb6ff103089492884.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195129">Over the last few years, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> have been, like much of the industry, looking for more sustainable solutions to yacht propulsion. Unlike their larger counterparts however, the movement to electric is a far more manageable manoeuvre, and to this end, they have already designed a hybrid propulsion system for their tenders. As Lynden pointed out, “the logistics of converting a superyacht to electric versus converting a tender is clear. With a yacht you have to cut large propulsion systems, often out the side of the ship, but you can re-power a tender with relative ease; engine compartments are accessible, you just need an owner who is willing to take that quantitative leap into new technology and a new product, which only a certain kind of owner is willing to do.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195112/image/large-e8820d85bafbfdbced53fe608f38e56d.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195112">In fact, the most recent delivery, an 8.1-metre limousine, is a platform that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> can already sell as an electric hybrid product. Lynden is eager to emphasise that, “there is a misconception that to build an electric hybrid vessel, you need to start from scratch, but you can approach it in a different way. Most clients specify that they want a specific motor for their tender, and we deliver on that specification, it is no different to put electric propulsion in your tender. You are adapting the battery system, it's not a major deviation from what is done every day here at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194880/image/large-a0dbbb7b57d6b20006601ef867452299.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194880">Though they recognise that the technology to support fully electric propulsion yachts is some way off, they have developed a successful diesel/electric system which can already be installed aboard their tenders. This system can replace the current engines with no impact to the design of the yacht: batteries replace fuel storage and electric motors replace the diesel ones. As Lynden said, “we are pulling out all the stoppers to achieve this end and make our hybrid electric tenders immediately available.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194895/image/large-b86a2f0d91e499c0ee22d5083e8a88d3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194895">Something that both Lynden and Gunnar are quick to point out is that technological developments are happening every day in this industry. Today we recognise that fully electrical propulsion systems would cut down the range of a tender drastically, but in five years, that might be a vastly lower division. What <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> is able to do is move with the times, if a client were to buy a hybrid tender from them to today, in five, ten years, they might be able to return and retrofit the vessel with fully electrical systems.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/194834/image/large-d19db97e595c8f3a6eca26d852321121.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/194834">Finding owners throughout the industry that are willing to step into new technology is paramount to the move to more sustainable propulsion methods. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> however, there is always the opportunity to refit existing tenders, an option made all that more viable by the materials the company uses. There are no hollow promises at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a>, this is one company that are ready and eager to take active steps – it is now time to find the clients who will take those steps with them.&nbsp;

One of the most visible pieces of equipment carried by a yacht is its tender. It is therefore no surprise that many owners are eschewing production tender models and opting for more custom designs to complement their yacht. So are custom tenders becoming the norm?<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158130/image/large-51133660e3bff6241a7a30a6f7c958ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158130">Vripack agrees that bespoke tenders are a growing trend. “Our customers are highly influenced by their fast moving environment,” they say. “New techniques result in disruptive innovations which form standards that not only challenge our industry but also the industries around us. The need for personalisation or the increase in custom design demands is just a logical result of these developments.”Hodgdon Yachts, which built the two 8.5 metre custom tenders for the 62 metre Feadship Sea Owl, believe that the growing numbers of custom tenders is having a snowball effect. “As more custom tenders appear on the scene more owners and their teams are more aware of the benefits of a custom build,” said Ed Roberts, Head of Sales and Marketing for Hodgdon Yachts.<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AKlw_DuHADQ" width="560"></iframe>Many tender clients are working with the designer of their yacht to ensure complementary styling between the two vessels. One example is Andrew Winch Yacht Design, which designed both Sea Owl and her accompanying tenders. “In recent years, the market is moving more towards custom made tenders,” says the Andrew Winch yacht design team. “Clients want unique designs to complement their superyacht.”Gunnar Vikungar, Managing Director of Vikal, is well placed to comment on the custom tender market, with Vikal having delivered 54 custom builds over the last 24 years. Vikungar is cautious about the increasing use of the custom label, believing that there are still very few fully custom tender projects. “I do not think the overall tender market is moving in a custom direction; custom is a loose and much abused term,” he explains. ”My personal view is that a custom tender is a one off built from from original bespoke moulds, although a production builder who modifies his tenders to suit a client may also call his tenders 'custom'.”How involved clients are in the design of a custom tender can vary. “Our clients are from a broad church and their involvement varies greatly, from the client trusting his advisors to take care of business to intimate involvement in every stage of design,’ says Vikungar. But regardless, “with tenders increasingly being seen as ‘mini yachts’, they [owners] want to ensure the design of the exterior and interior is unique,” says the Andrew Winch yacht design team.When dealing with custom requests, a key challenge for designers is to marry form and function.“Often it becomes a very involved process to make reality of an idea that looks good in a rendering,” says Roberts. “Tenders have to do more than function; they have to fit into the mothership,” says the Andrew Winch yacht design team. “They are the showpiece of a yacht at dock side: the first point of boarding the mothership and they have to fit into the dock.”<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/158131/image/large-07e3bb10d82b5bd16b63e78180f5ac77.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/158131">If the functionality of the tender is too neglected the end result may be a tender that is wholly impractical. “An owner may be pleased to have his tastes truthfully represented in the tender but the crew charged with daily operations will quietly resent the builder,” says Vikungar. “They will look for ways to use the tender as little as possible and on large yachts where they will have a number of tenders at their disposal they quietly vote with their feet.”One positive effect of the increased importance of tenders to the overall look of the yacht is that the tender design is increasingly being addressed much more early on in yacht build programs. “In the old days the tender was often an afterthought,” says Roberts. “Now it is more common that we get called in early to collaborate on the size, capacity and configuration of the tender bay; we wish more programs would recognise the importance of involving us early in the process.”Perhaps the best way to answer the question of whether the tender market is moving towards customisation is that while truly custom tender projects are still in the minority we are certainly seeing increased customisation of tenders.
