British design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coquine![design] (Company)">coquine![design]</a> has unveiled the renderings for a new sailing yacht concept, Crystal. The eye-catching design measures in at 100-metres and features a very different styling approach which results in very varied and versatile spaces.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237331/image/large-710f0f0736cea1e5b55a4498014a7165.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237331">The superyacht concept Crystal comes from designer Christian Leyk <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/55581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Designer Christian Leyk on his 49m family explorer superyacht concept Coba (2022-07-18 10:30:00 +0200)">who unveiled his 49-metre family explorer superyacht concept, Coba, last month</a>. The motor yacht was based on his son’s love for the children’s television series ‘Octonauts.’<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237330/image/large-78131b71471c4aed4fcfb46e112148fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237330">However, the inspiration behind Crystal comes from his 10-year collaboration with designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/148" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ken Freivokh Design (Company)">Ken Freivokh</a> after a conversation from seeing the 88-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/385" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maltese Falcon88.0m (288'9&quot;)Perini Navi2006">Maltese Falcon</a> at a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. During this time, Christian also had the pleasure to work on many concept designs. One of these turned out to become the world’s second DynaRig yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s 106.7-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237327/image/large-5f4048f4eddf10969b4766f9696f3205.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237327">The three-masted schooner Crystal stands out from the crowd, thanks to her geometric glazing that mimics that of a gemstone. Crystal is defined by traditional flowing arches and curves to create a sleek profile. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237328/image/large-baa15b6a6c4498dd2d24de260c59dbd6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237328">For the interior, well known designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexandre Thiriat (Company)">Alexandre Thiriat</a> has been invited to the project, and for the engineering <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coquine![design] (Company)">coquine![design]</a> has been in contact with some parties who made the predecessor such an outstanding masterpiece.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237329/image/large-cd16c8bb0249a16abd1493d8f59b22db.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237329">The sailing yacht Crystal has been designed to emphasise the interaction between indoor and outdoor spaces by letting in plenty of natural light and creating shadows where necessary. She is able to accommodate up to 12 guests, including a full beam owner’s stateroom with folding balconies.&nbsp;Other amenities include a lovely beach club with gym, a garage for tenders and toys forward, a welcoming swimming pool aft, generous lounge spaces on main and upper deck, and a well equipped wine cellar.&nbsp;In terms of performance, Crystal has the same sustainability credentials as her bigger sister. She should be able to cross the Atlantic Ocean without using any fuel under normal conditions. Another advantage of the DynaRig is how easy it is to use, which allows for more time under sails than on a conventional sailing yacht.

Shortly into Newton’s time onboard, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetairos</a> underwent a rectification period at the Dutch <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters Shipyard</a>. “A lot of her systems and her hydraulics were changed. If you get it wrong, it catches you out pretty quickly, that’s for sure.” Her emerald green hull stands out against the water, both for its distinctive colour and long, regal waterline.&nbsp;“She is a big, powerful boat, with a long waterline,” Captain Graham Newton explained. “I’ve sailed a lot of miles on her now — probably about 120,000 — and she’s a fantastic boat to sail. She effortlessly eats up the miles, especially out on the ocean.” Indeed, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetairos</a> is the largest carbon composite ketch in the world and a force to be reckoned with out on open water. Her ketch rig and lightweight design allow her to cruise powerfully with an air of effortlessness. “She’s a wolf in wolf’s clothing,” laughed Captain Newton.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220440/image/large-0ba37b7249d9bcf1aad6899073675e2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220440">A native to open water cruising, preparing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetairos</a> for a regatta takes effort and expertise. “We put a lot of effort into preparing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetarios</a> for the racecourse,” explained Captain Newton. “It takes us about three or four weeks to transform her from a proper cruising vessel to being race ready. This is a long process, we change the sails and remove a lot from the vessel and set up different systems.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/80402/image/large-467ee25945d9b0cae92db14063587e0d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/80402">Indeed, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetairos</a> is often almost double the size of her competitors and when she races must undergo intensive preparation to shift her compatibility from open-water cruising to regattas. “There is a huge amount of workup, training and time and effort put into trying to take home a win,” Captain Newton explained.But when put against more typical purpose-designed performance style vessels, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011">Hetairos</a> is victorious. “In our class, we race alongside other high performance boats. It is a really challenging class to win, and to then win the overall title is not easy. To do it twice in a row, is an incredible achievement,” Captain Newton reminisced. “Her owner had been chasing a grand victory with the boat for a while, so to be able to deliver that to them back in 2019 was fantastic, and then to follow that up with a win last year was pretty special.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/592" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hetairos66.7m (218'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2011"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220437/image/large-3bf65e9b112b8897a9d3e97ee517a9f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220437">Hetairos</a> has 11 permanent crew members, and welcomes an extra 24 bodies exclusively for racing. “The core of the racing team have been with us for many years,” Captain Newton explained. “Having the core crew the same again and again makes such a massive difference. The race crew that we have are a really nice bunch of people who have a lot of respect for the permanent crew. Looking back to August 1986, one can observe the humble beginnings of the Bucket Regattas, the very first of which was a hastily thrown-together affair in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The originary seeds of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket Regattas</a> were sown in a spirited discussion that took place at a high-society birthday celebration between several yacht owners concerning optimal yacht design and individual sailing prowess.With undisputed bragging rights to last an annum hailed as the grand prize, the following day seven sailing yachts raced on a make-shift 15 nautical mile course around Nantucket Sound. However, participants soon learned that camaraderie formed at sea between like-minded individuals was the greatest prize of all. After a nearby bucket was deemed the perfect commemoration, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket Regatta</a> was born, and the spirit of camaraderie remains the beating heart of the regatta.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29460/image/large-0ec115066e113aada7f13d410a0a338b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29460">The course itself is demanding, spanning just over 23 nautical miles. “It is a challenging place to sail at times, especially when you go around the island on day one and three in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket</a>. Particularly last year, when it was very windy,” said Captain Newton. “Out on the eastern side of the island you get big seas and it is pretty breezy.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/29482/image/large-bedbc7adaa16fcaec8401eb16f2b4713.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/29482">For casual sailing, Captain Newton recommended, “The group of islands off the north coast of the St Barths make it brilliant for sailing, as there are some pretty interesting routes.” Here, sailors can find a rugged sailing ground home to a wealth of secluded bays and uninhabited islands and islets. “It is a pretty spectacular place to sail,” Captain Newton continued, “You get a mix of the flat water on the Leeside and big waves out to the east.”St Barths is a charming and flirty Caribbean island with a reputation for its luxurious feel and glitz-studded, lively atmosphere. “St Barths is particularly busy during the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket</a>,” Captain Newton laughed. “It feels like the Caribbean French Riviera. The island is home to spectacular beaches and beach clubs, making it good fun.”

More important, it is the first time <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/66" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Red Dragon51.7m (169'7&quot;)Alloy Yachts2008">Red Dragon</a> has ever raced period, so the yacht’s owner is delighted. “The owner loves to drive, so he drove the whole time and did a great job,” said King.The 44-metre schooner <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5645" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Columbia43.03m (141'2&quot;)Eastern Shipbuilding Group2014">Columbia</a>, one of the most elegant yachts in the L'Esprit 2 fleet, recorded a 43.5 degree of heel on its winning sprint. “We were taking a lot of water over the deck but we were under control,” said guest crew Jakob Havrlant, who counts this as his first Bucket but says it won’t be his last. “Some of the sloops were catching us upwind, but we were a reaching machine on the other legs. Her three staterooms echo the aesthetic of the main saloon, and the staterooms are unusually spacious for a yacht of her size, with high ceilings and walk-around beds in the master and double cabins. The master stateroom is situated in the bow of the yacht, and features a large bathroom, lounge area and a large closet. The owner’s have also opted for a study room to be situated opposite the lower level of the saloon, which will act as a private space, ideal for working or retreating during long passages. Versatility was a major consideration when the yacht was in the design phases, and many of the spaces can be transformed for different purposes and during different types of sailing. For any passionate sailor worth his salt, sailing aboard a classic J-Class yacht would be the pinnacle of their maritime career. For some however, life aboard the mythic J’s is not just a dream, but an everyday reality, and at times, an adrenaline overload. One of those rare few, is the Suffolk born Englishman, Will Gibbon, who has had the fortune to sail, cruise and live aboard not one, but two of these extraordinary vessels. The international team at OneSails cut cloth for some of the biggest names in the industry, designing sails for superyachts, as well as classics and dinghies. It was here that Will, already an experienced small boat sailor, began sailing and racing more frequently, eventually meeting English comedian Griff Rhys Jones and joining the race crew of his 1948 Bermudan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sparkman & Stephens, Inc. (Company)">Sparkman &amp; Stephens</a> yawl, Argyll. His passion for classic yachts already ignited, it was Will's firm ambition to join one of the Class and compete in the once in a lifetime regatta. Eventually his dream was recognised, with the invitation to join <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ranger41.55m (136'4&quot;)Danish Yachts2003">Ranger</a> as deckhand. “The mate at the time was promoted to captain, and he took me on and I worked through the ranks, which is the best way to learn these yachts. Even though <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/432" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ranger41.55m (136'4&quot;)Danish Yachts2003">Ranger</a> has had a refit since I was last aboard, I am still familiar with both of the yachts, having spent so much time aboard.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195515/image/large-74bdf602eba6143a336b0fe716023033.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195515">For many sailors who witnessed the 2017 America’s Cup, the spectacular show of the J-Class competition stood out as a pinnacle of the event. Processing through Hamilton Harbour, gigantic flags billowing at their stern, the J-Class yachts truly put on a show, and for Will it was a top moment of his career. “Bermuda is definitely the highlight for anyone that has sailed aboard these yachts in recent years, it is easily the highlight of my career.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/195513/image/large-ce1f6035c0d913dfafb3f22b12e18447.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/195513">It was not all fun and games however, the regatta was a serious affair and every owner, captain and crew wanted to take the top spot during the races. Racing on a yacht coming toward its centenary isn’t without its difficulties, and Bermuda posed some additional challenges for the crew. With the water temperature considerably hotter than the Mediterranean, and the yachts being pushed to their limits, sometimes with only thirty minutes between races. There wasn't much time to catch your breath, “One day we did three windward-leeward courses, which for a J-Class is massive, especially in the small space within the reef in Bermuda. As Will explained, many of the Class’ take a year out after big racing seasons like 2017 because the investment of time means less time for cruising, the other hugely rewarding part of owning a J-Class. The owner of one of the newest J's to the fleet, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/32" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Holland Jachtbouw (Company)">Holland Jachtbouw</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2632" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Topaz42.62m (139'10&quot;)Holland Jachtbouw2015">Topaz</a>, launched in 2015, fortunately shares the enthusiasm for racing clearly displayed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1933">Velsheda</a>’s owner, and the two yachts go bow-to-bow at almost every regatta. Despite their classic aesthetic however, these yachts are high performance beasts, as Will noted, “we are always pushing to get every last bit out of the boat, our rigger often reminds us ‘you only have to win by a second’.” Today the entire fleet features carbon masts and sails, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1933">Velsheda</a> has hydraulic winches and Future Fibres rigging, a big upgrade from a few years ago. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/77148/image/large-2b46575ac18ba220f40e375346d82ea0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/77148">When they aren’t competitively racing, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1933">Velsheda</a>’s owner joins the yacht throughout the year, and cruising is some of the crew’s favourite time aboard. When asked if a particular moment had stayed in Will's mind, a cruise in Greece when they spotted the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/192" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> 1934 J-Class <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1934">Endeavour</a>, the vessel which lost to the American defender Rainbow&nbsp;by Vanderbilt, Herreshoff and Burgess, immediately came to mind. Unlike their modern counterparts, many of which are made of carbon and GRP with wooden veneers, classic yachts demand constant work to retain them in pristine condition. Last year, while the pandemic raged across the world, and regattas were set aside, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/251" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Velsheda39.4m (129'3&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1933">Velsheda</a>'s team took the opportunity to conduct her 25 year survey. The hull of the 54-metre sailing yacht Argo 54, Hull 459, has arrived in Greece after it was launched in the Netherlands last month. The advanced electric yacht will join the shipyard’s growing fleet, which includes the flagship 27.5-metre Ocean Eco 90.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262793/image/large-ef2c87a0179b87414e8e15bf59833033.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262793">Designed with luxury and performance in mind, the Ocean Eco 78 catamaran boasts the latest technology developments with integrated solar panels and a fully-electric drive. After selling the firm to First Niagara Financial Group, Rob was appointed as the company’s Senior Vice President, where he guided the Insurance Division with over $600,000,000 in annual sales. He also founded Lama Commercial Real Estate, where he negotiated site acquisitions for a number of large American retailers, including Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid. During this time, Lama owned a yacht in Miami for his entire family to enjoy.&nbsp;After moving to Miami, Lama combined his love of yachting with his business acumen, establishing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Miami International Yacht Sales LLC. (Company)">Miami International Yacht Sale</a>. Lama’s business and negotiation experience enabled him to find his niche in the sale of vessels over 30-metres. He now joins <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> in 2023 after many years of successfully running his own yacht brokerage firm. The British design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coquine![design] (Company)">coquine![design]</a> has unveiled the renderings for a new 49-metre superyacht concept, Coba. The concept is heavily based on ocean and underwater exploration with emphasis on being a family explorer yacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234376/image/large-712cb379245eca535ec4f8417763119e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234376">The superyacht Coba measures up at just below 500 GT making her a low volume vessel that is suitable for a family of four or five, or a small group of friends. For that reason she has been designed to be simple and reliable, and can be operated by a small crew. The underwater world has always fascinated me, and those submarines do make it accessible to people who cannot scuba.”The superyacht Coba has been designed with family at the heart of it, and is aimed at those who like to connect with nature and enjoy the adventure of cruising. “She is fairly down to earth, no fancy spa, or impressive saloons. Instead, you’ll have the observation deck where you can relax and just watch the world passing by” adds Christian Leyk.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234379/image/large-5d907afd3aa15dc3de90f6c12990f1e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234379">As well as this, the design has a very noticeable cartoon Octopus on her bow, “My son, who is almost six, loves watching the Octonauts. In fact, it’s one show he has watched more often than I could count, and it’s featuring an adventurous octopus called, you’ve guessed it, Coba!” As a result of this, Christian used this as his inspiration for creating a true family explorer yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234380/image/large-6555804a9c0863404db73d242ebf0a89.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234380">The concept Coba makes sure that all the essentials are onboard, making her a perfect choice for young families. “Of course she will have all the latest in satellite communication so you can work from wherever you are, as well as allowing the kids to watch their favourite cartoons!”&nbsp;For those looking for more adventure onboard, there is a submarine as well as a nine-metre tender, and space for Jet Skis, or a car for land excursions. There is a high-spec multi-purpose crane placed under the aft deck that once stored away can be transformed into a large activity deck for parties and entertaining.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/234377/image/large-6c9f4d76113dfa31f3cc2f04cbd69493.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/234377">In terms of propulsion, Coba can be adapted based on the client’s requests, but Christian suggests that pods are best as “they allow for the best manoeuvrability and noise insulation, so naturally this will make the vessel a hybrid, utilising diesel generators.” The yacht Coba, will also have a draft of three-metres and extra plating to allow the yacht to be ice-classed if required.Christian adds that although the concept is speculative, his contacts within the industry allow Coba to be completed quickly should an owner be interested. “I always like to keep close contact with naval architects, yards, project managers and fellow designers, even though <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6643" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Coquine![design] (Company)">coquine![design]</a> does offer interior and exterior design. This means that any interested owner could see the project started in no time, and turn it into a home away from home for himself and his family.”

The 106.7m three-masted sailing yacht, Black Pearl, built by Oceanco and delivered to her owner in 2018, is the result of an evolutionary design by Ken Freivokh Design, Nuvolari Lenard and Villate De¬sign. A multi-level central atrium includes an all- glass lift that rises alongside the central mast, contributing to a feeling of vertical integration between the decks. Dykstra Naval Architects designed Black Pearl’s DynaRig carbon masts and sailing system. All 2,900 square metres of sails can be set at the push of a button in 7 minutes! BMT Nigel Gee collaborated with Oceanco to create Black Pearl’s hybrid propulsion system as well as other onboard systems such as waste heat recovery. In addition to wind power, she is powered by 2 x 1080kW MTU’s / 2 x 400kW electrical propulsion motors. Her accommodations include a master suite, 2 VIP suites, 2 double guest cabins and a full beam beach club, that is convert¬ible into a cinema.
