In 2024, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal Yacht Coatings</a> celebrates its 20 year anniversary, and this is an excellent time to take a look back at the company's mission, the first steps, and what lies ahead for the next two decades. Under the slogan 'It's about time', the company started at Mankiewicz in March 2004 as a global paint manufacturer to help shape the market for high-end yacht coatings. In the more than 125-year history of Mankiewicz, a few products had already been used in boatbuilding over the decades.At the beginning of the 2000s, there was a comprehensive vision: a complete portfolio under the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal Yacht Coatings</a> was to be launched. Applicable from the first primer coat to the final topcoat. Thomas Schultz, Global Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a>, has been on board from the beginning and looks back on the course already taken, and what lies ahead in the coming years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309209/image/large-cc105f0c06ef57868d1e4950e8a5af2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309209">Engineering in a Can"Developing and applying yacht paints is considered one of the fine arts in the coatings industry. There are an incredible number of industries where the highest demands are placed on the finish, the surfaces to be painted are rarely as large and demanding as on a superyacht," says Thomas. "In car and aircraft painting, a comparably good finish is essential, although the design of a car or aircraft is much more forgiving in terms of the visual appearance of the finished surface."&nbsp;This is because vehicles only very rarely have large, completely flat surfaces. For example, the fuselage of an airplane is enormous and is painted by several painters at the same time. But it is still round, and the passengers "only" expect an extremely high gloss, not a mirror-like surface. "Especially on large yachts, we have comparably huge but almost flat surfaces on the hull. This is an extreme challenge, even for professional painters. If the performance of the topcoat is not at 100%, you cannot achieve a mirror-like surface appearance. Suppose the underlying primer or fairing compound layers are not 100% perfect. In that case, you can also see this immediately through the topcoat," says Thomas, summarising only one of the challenges for yacht paints and the paint crews.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309213/image/large-bb60343f88bcaa9009ff55b009e076a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309213">Anyone who has ever painted a high-gloss yacht can confirm this and knows that it is important to match and coordinate products for each layer to achieve a perfect surface finish. To develop and produce yacht coatings at the highest level, you must know how to do your homework right from the beginning.Suppose you look at all five layers of a yacht coating. In that case, you come up with a vast bundle of functional and optical properties that must be fulfilled: DOI and UV resistance are just the tip of the requirements iceberg, extending deep into adhesion, sand-ability and polish-ability. "Painting conditions vary significantly worldwide and also play a crucial role. Almost everything is possible, from construction site environments to clean rooms and from cold, dry environments to warm, humid ones. The coating portfolio must be able to map all of this with suitable systems.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/267888/image/large-650b618a2a3247335cff7624bd0e4800.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/267888">Challenges: Sought, found, solved"At the beginning, it was a very complex and exciting challenge to enter this market and put together a suitable portfolio," recalls the yacht expert. "But what made life much easier for us was the wealth of experience that we, as the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> team at the company Mankiewicz, could draw on. There have been some synergies in terms of development, and we have gained experience with high-gloss and robust surfaces over time since our foundation in 1895 as a paint manufacturer."Mankiewicz's markets and product lines show clear parallels. The global coating manufacturer is firmly anchored in the aviation industry, which has taken the exterior painting of aircraft to a new level with innovative coating systems. The rail sector is also concerned with large exterior surfaces with visually and functionally highly sophisticated finishes."Of course, this was and still is worth its weight in gold for developing our yacht portfolio. Right from the start, we had an experienced team and colleagues who could quickly adapt to the yacht industry on the laboratory side, in application technology and production," says Thomas.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309212/image/large-54c81b8d4cf532ff327a7e06793bbcbd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309212">Markets aheadWith such a background, it was easier for the young <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> team to get a foot in the door with shipyards and yacht painters. "Nevertheless, despite the many advantages, it was difficult to win the first major projects at the beginning," explains the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> pioneer. "Confidence in our set-up is one thing, but experience with the right paint job in the dock is another. We first had to earn our spurs."&nbsp;In 2004, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> was brought to market first in Australia and the United States. After yacht painters and shipyards had noticed the first results, the first inquiries came from Europe, especially the Netherlands, in the second year, while in America, demand continued to grow steadily. By 2006-2007, many yachts were applying <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a>'s Polyurethane Premium Topcoat 501, including the largest dark blue private yacht in the world at that time.&nbsp;The story and the level of awareness naturally continued to develop over the following years. More and more projects came along, and they got bigger and bigger. So big and prominent that most of them can no longer be named. In 2023, almost 40 percent of the world's 100 largest yachts were coated with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> systems. For more than one decade, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> has been a solid and still steadily growing player in the yacht coatings market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309208/image/large-b832f26d3f879f812924d4672f54d36f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309208">Sailing on the Seven SeasToday the projects are painted worldwide and while the focus in Europe is primarily on the construction and refit of superyachts, there are sportfish yachts in the USA and a strong DIY community with smaller boats. In Asia, too, increasingly high-quality and larger new-builds have emerged in recent years. The larger the paint jobs, the more critical it is for yacht painters to receive close and personal support from the paint manufacturer. Trust in partnership and specialist knowledge is integral to a perfect finish."To do justice to this, a global network of experts is essential for a paint manufacturer," says Thomas, looking at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a>'s setup. "With our global distributor network, we are always quickly on site for our customers. This ensures fast and reliable technical support." Also the Mankiewicz locations in Charleston, SC (USA), Hamburg (Germany), Gyancourt (France), Leicester (UK), Singapore, and Shanghai (China) are vital support hotspots.However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alexseal Yacht Coatings (Company)">Alexseal</a> is interested not only in close cooperation but also in personal relationships. That is a system with which Mankiewicz has already revolutionised the aviation industry."The system offers outstanding values for a wide range of painting parameters but should be applied by experienced painting crews to achieve the best possible result. "The final, additional layer in particular - the clearcoat - gives the finish particularly high durability, UV resistance, and visual depth. This is the direction we consider significant for the coming years."&nbsp;However, the yacht market is not just a sea of superyachts. The sport and leisure segment and medium-sized luxury yachts also make up a large part of the market. The feeling of a truly luxurious carpet is something that cannot be cheated, and it is for this reason that superyacht owners and designers turn to the most talented makers in the world; Tai Ping. Founded in 1956 in British Hong Kong, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3550" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tai Ping Carpets (Company)">Tai Ping</a> was established with the goal of developing an industry and providing employment for migrant workers. (Company)">Riva</a> is actually re-entering the superyacht segment, a market we initially explored back in the 1960s. Mr. Carlo Riva undertook significant projects both in Holland and at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a>. At the time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> was already renowned for its bespoke, full-custom superyacht builds. Among these were projects like the 30-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1234" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vespucci30.5m (100'1&quot;)CRN1978">Vespucci</a> and others ranging from 22 to 40-metres. During the 60s and 70s, yachts of this size were considered what we call superyachts today, thus making it more of a re-entry into the larger segment of superyacht construction.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/260187/image/large-868d2ae4accbc207a4324c3e0115a63b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/260187">Moreover, I mention this in part because my return to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> in 2014 marked my second tenure with the company, my initial stint having been with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. (Company)">Riva</a>. During this second period, I presented a strategic plan to Mr. Galassi, emphasising what I believed was the optimal way forward. This approach helps to keep costs down. However, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> operates differently; it focuses on full custom builds, which, while inherently more expensive, offer a distinct advantage. This opens up a unique opportunity: why shouldn't <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. We're going to approach Carlo Riva and propose building a 50-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. (Company)">Riva</a>”. Filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension, we presented our plan to Mr. Riva. I was somewhat anxious that he might dismiss our proposal as a mistake. To my relief, his response was encouraging. He said, “I don't understand why it took so long for someone to come forward with this idea.” I believe it was a natural progression for us to return to constructing yachts of that size, given <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. Although it might remind some of the Aquariva, the Rivarama introduced a completely new class of boat that many have since attempted to emulate. Like Porsche, which has successfully transitioned classic designs into the modern era while maintaining its distinctive appeal, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. (Company)">Riva</a> too has evolved while preserving its identity.&nbsp;This evolution extends beyond design to encompass technology. Our technical department, a direct descendant of the teams that built boats in the 1960s, continues to grow and innovate. I first started it on my own, and once I had more work, we built it together. In the beginning, we just had one yacht and were doing charters. Then, step by step, friends and colleagues in our network started to refer us. Being ex-crew members has been so beneficial for us in building our company, as we began by utilising our existing yachting network.Antoni: Being a young company, in the beginning, it took some time to gain the trust of brokers and clients and go through all the correct processes and certifications, but we are there now and are much more established. Transitioning into yacht brokerage felt like a natural progression for us. While we had to learn the professional aspects of brokerage, our first-hand experience onboard gives us a deep understanding of crew dynamics and technical operations. When we assist in selling or purchasing a yacht, we discuss all aspects with the crew and go onboard the vessel, allowing us to give an in-depth technical perspective that sets us apart. For example, the friend of an owner who was the first seller of the first boat we sold is how we transitioned into sales. We always knew we wanted to do sales, but we started with charter and then it developed. Our big goal at the moment is to get more yachts in our portfolio above 60 metres for charter to allow us to have more yachts to propose to our clients.&nbsp;Dominika: We have quite a lot of clients that come back to us each year since we began, which is great. In terms of the clients requesting charters, we have definitely experienced the wave of the younger generation entering the industry. We work closely with a lot of Captains and have built these relationships, so a lot of our business comes from these referrals. We have quite a big CA charter listing for an agency our size. Although still in its early stages, this trend started to emerge around &nbsp;five years ago, it has been steadily growing.”Client composition and expedition preferences at Simpson Marine: When asked about the composition of the Asian market and its main nationalities, Clayton explained that the majority of their charter clients are Chinese, accounting for more than half. “Around a quarter are Thai, a market not to be underestimated,” he noted. He also mentioned that a significant number of clients are Singaporeans, a group with considerable wealth. Indonesians, too, are beginning to enter the market. We sat down with Tim to find out what makes the Lotus table so unique and the perfect accompaniment to any superyacht interior design. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310755/image/large-03804da547ef24f5748951ffeb064dab.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310755">Tell us about the origin of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7636" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lotus Woodworks (Company)">Lotus Woodworks</a>, when was the company founded, and how has it developed over the years?&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7636" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lotus Woodworks (Company)">Lotus Woodworks</a> was spun out from our existing reclaimed barn wood furniture company, Western Heritage Furniture (WHF) two years ago. WHF designs and manufactures interior home furnishings in the Mission and Craftsman styles utilising reclaimed barn wood, leather, copper and steel. We sell to furniture dealers, interior designers, hospitality and residential and offer full custom options.&nbsp;In 2009, we were creating custom furniture pieces for a residential remodel in Utah while working with an interior design firm. They had an existing Jupe style table that they wanted to incorporate into the design, but it had warped making it non-functional. We took on the challenge to design and build a new table that would remain stable for years to come and the result is the Lotus Table. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310749/image/large-97263ba060be2bae2a7adc49c75d414f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310749">Can you explain how the table works and why it is so unique and in demand?&nbsp;Round dining tables have, and I believe always will, remain the best choice for maximising space and seating capacity. Additionally, the circle is a universal symbol of totality and&nbsp;wholeness that creates movement towards unity and equitable relationships. In its mechanism, the Lotus table expands on a locking carousel, meaning that you can open and close the table from one place instead of having to walk around and unfold each section in situ. First you pull each pie out and unfold each leaf, then push the leaf into the centre and then each pie to lock it all in place. We approached this challenge by minutely breaking down each process and subtracting wasted motions or adding valuable details. We then researched and developed the best materials available today and added specific CNC technologies to execute the precision required.&nbsp;Can you tell us more about the capabilities of your craftsmen and the intricacies of the furniture&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7636" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lotus Woodworks (Company)">Lotus Woodworks</a>&nbsp;produces?&nbsp;Our craftsmen are unique in the woodworking industry due to the focus and endurance each table requires. It is not unusual, when speaking with yacht owners, to find that very few spend more than a few weeks a year aboard their yacht, even now when superyachts are able to double as home offices and many have impressive autonomous capabilities. One couple that bucks that trend however, are the owners of the 40-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>, who enjoy, not a few weeks, but almost a week per month for the entire Mediterranean summer aboard their semi-custom <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. We recently sat down with the owners to hear more about the customisations made to their yacht, including the embroidered panels made by a collective of Vietnamese women, their love of adventure and passion for cruising in Croatia. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181215/image/large-c194f92d6c46f8bb1d84ce81077ad125.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181215">Tell us about your history with yachts and how you came to build a superyacht?Husband: It all started with our love of being in nature. Being outside reminds us of our place in the world and being on the water is really the epitome of the outdoors experience – enjoying the day from sunrise to sunset, swimming in the sea and exploring hidden islands. That passion drove us to our first yacht charters more than 15 years ago aboard 55 foot motor yachts, but we were always disappointed that by 2pm captains and crew wanted to leave the anchorages and head into port.&nbsp;We didn't get into chartering to sit stern-to in marinas. We wanted to wake up in private bays and jump straight into the water, but the crew had other priorities – which we also understood. We realised that to really have that autonomy and to go where we wanted to go, we needed our own yacht, so in 2010 we bought a 26-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> in Croatia, which was the moment we met Captain Boris and Chief stewardess Nicky, who are still with us today.Wife: Croatia became our second love and really offered us everything we could want in a yachting destination. By 2016 we were spending weeks at a time aboard and that experience really taught us what we loved (and didn’t love), eventually leading to the decision to build our own dream yacht. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/112577/image/large-c7aa374fb8078904f134f0fc0589f639.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/112577">So in 2017 you acquired an in-build semi-custom&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>&nbsp;Classic Supreme 132, later to become&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>, can you share some of those unique customisations?Husband: For us the sundeck is the best place to be throughout the year, with the great views and best sunshine. Most superyachts feature an open sundeck, but because we start using the yacht in April and continue through to October, it can get windy and chilly so we decided instead to close the central section to create a protected area which is unique for this series. It’s been such a success because it made that deck a lot more versatile and usable, and with heaters inside you have a great spot to sit whatever the weather. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181246/image/large-1cb99dcb8ba2dc6b9894edbe6fcd7007.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181246">The second thing is that most yachts have at least one dining table on every deck, as well as in the main saloon, but for us this just seemed like an unnecessary use of space. We decided instead to use the middle deck as a sporty, fun space where we could play games with friends and entertain. We had a self-levelling pool table and a foosball table made, added a bar with beer taps and this is the space that we use all the time when onboard – whether it's just the two of us or we have friends and it is also loved by our charter guests.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181233/image/large-10201c7c7d050b0f815cdfc433b1f15b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181233">Did you have charter guests in mind when you were designing the yacht, particularly as you designed the interiors yourselves?Wife: It was our dream to create an active boat where we could have fun, so these choices were really personal decisions for us, but it happens that they are also loved by charter guests, especially because she is quite unusual. The most important thing for us was to create a space that felt like home, whereas most boats are fairly neutral in their interior design but we wanted to add our spirit to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181236/image/large-911583c9ebfedd2ab95c636e65639637.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181236">I worked hard on her design because it was important to create something visually beautiful, but that fit with our life. We spent a long time considering the material choices, to make sure she was robust enough to withstand quite a bit of use, but also so that the crew had an easy experience with the boat. We really didn’t want to come aboard and spend our time worrying about spilling things on the floor, so the balance between beauty and functionality was very important.Husband: The interior configuration is also very tailored to our lifestyle, with the formal main saloon and then the more informal and entertainment area above. We have also created a massage room on the middle deck and have two therapists within the crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181240/image/large-fc551d86e69603f996acf976f05f7b3c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181240">Can you tell us a bit about the embroidery panels that adorn many of the spaces?Wife: I am half Vietnamese and I travel there often for work on a foundation that I run, alongside my husband. This embroidery technique is deeply embedded in Vietnamese culture and over the years I have much admired the artistry of the work. During one trip some years ago I visited the women who created these panels and spent some days with them learning about their craft and I was deeply inspired by their commitment to their work. It takes around 10 years to qualify in this technique, but if they want to create a face, it is another five years of training. This is something truly unique and I wanted to share this heritage with our friends and the charter guests, so perhaps they can also be inspired by this incredible work. And actually even the embroidery materials have been specially selected for their resilience to salty air to protect them while onboard the yacht!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/314699/image/large-fb768483a6ea8a39b4ee22c94c5a53a4.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/314699">What does a normal day onboard&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6994" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Happy Me40.24m (132'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Happy Me</a>&nbsp;look like for you and your guests? Husband: We really use every part of this yacht, moving from deck to deck throughout the day and even sitting on the observation foredeck when cruising at night and taking in the stars. We love to listen to classical music in the main saloon, and rock music on the middle deck, while the sundeck is where we spend most of our time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/181247/image/large-2a725a2994f7c682a170ed38bc4de39a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/181247">We also have the full spectrum of tenders and toys, including a 12-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Technohull (Company)">Technohull</a> Explorer 40 tender with two Yamaha 425 hp engines that we tow behind the yacht. We decided to go for a proper tender so that we can explore hidden bays during the day, pick up guests from beaches safely and easily and tow wakeboards and water skis. We also have two of everything you could need for fun on the water; Jet Skis, e-foils, kayaks and eight bikes (just to name a few).
