When it comes to disruptive superyacht brands there aren’t many that have caused as much of a riot as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a>. As the Polish shipbuilder pops the cork for its 20th anniversary, it has much to celebrate, having overcome some serious challenges since its inception, all of which have made it stronger. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is not only disruptive – it’s punk rock and extremely cool.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224720/image/large-baafe4c2e7762ae9ff47bf2640404830.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224720">At the turn of the millennium the superyacht industry was one saturated with monohulls. Those looking for something different, something beamier and something just as luxurious were pressed to find one. Francis Lapp, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, was one of those unsatisfied minorities who enjoyed what catamarans had to offer, but was dissatisfied with the quality of finish and the lack of glamour that was available on the market.&nbsp;“I was operating a successful catamaran charter business in Madagascar in the late 1990s, which had a fully booked calendar season after season. But even though I had some of the best catamarans on the market, they were still plastic yachts that didn’t stand up to the level of quality of monohulls from the same category. This had to change,” Lapp explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242999/image/large-8b5d75aa5004b21a679f125367d4f355.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242999">Lapp was on a mission and he knew that to achieve the high-standard that catamarans deserved he had to build one himself. During this initial journey he came across the historic Gdansk shipyard in Poland and started to gather a team of experts to help him actualise his vision. In 2003 Lapp’s vision hit the water, as the world’s first-ever ocean going luxury catamaran, the 22.5-metre Sunreef 74 was launched in Gdansk. Not only was this the first catamaran to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with monohulls in terms of quality, it was the first catamaran with a flybridge. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242998/image/large-03c54f83baafdc88927fabbe28a4238f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242998">The company’s success stems from Francis Lapp being an outsider to the world of yacht, he grew up far away from the water of boating and as a result brought a completely new approach to yacht design. But while the launch of the first luxury catamaran was heralded a great success in Gdansk, its initial reception wasn’t well received when it made its debut at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. Lapp had his hopes high for the event, but he barely had any visitors onboard. It was just too different, too radical: first it was a catamaran and second it was built in Poland. There was somewhat of a lack of trust, as Lapp was presenting an innovative world of firsts that the industry just wasn’t ready for.Luckily for the superyacht sector, Lapp wasn’t deterred. He just had to contend with a larger PR drive and that was for Poland itself. Not only was Lapp pushing a cultural change within the industry, peddling luxury multihulls in a world exclusively reserved for monohulls, but he also had to showcase the breadth of talent that Poland had to offer. Poland is that place in Europe where luxury brands thrive and there’s some serious manufacturing here, and to prove it Lapp started hosting a series of lifestyle events, inviting guests from all over the world. They were a success and helped put Poland back on the map as a provider of outstanding luxury products.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232891/image/large-fe9c83430a584635ed02186db5935c84.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232891"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232896/image/large-541b59c1b11243b60fc558e441da3a4c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232896"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s operations in Gdansk were also championing this as Lapp and his team weren’t content with redefining the very definition of catamaran only once, they championed the platform year in and year out with a revolutionary overthrow of what’s possible. In 2008 it launched the world’s first double decked power catamaran, and then two years later it delivered not one but two catamaran superyachts: the 31.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 102, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> and the 34.72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 114, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74201/image/large-9329a2f27feb7248e67e94dac5e08628.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74201"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74340/image/large-e4f2bbef9e2ce16ebf6b4e296bec3756.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74340">In just 10 years <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had cornered the catamaran segment and redefined the very meaning of luxury catamarans. The Poland-based builder had confirmed its prowess and created a new awareness of the virtues catamarans had to offer. Its reception was far from that at its inaugurating Monaco Yacht Show, as in 2011 both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> were finalists in two coveted ceremonies, the World Superyacht Awards and the Showboat Design Awards.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had become a formidable force and was rapidly growing in stature. But was soon stopped dead when a fire broke out at its facilities and completely burnt down the production centre, including a number of in-build projects.&nbsp;Lapp was travelling to Turkey at the time for a meeting in Istanbul when he received a call from Gdansk with the news. He jumped straight on a plane back to Poland where his team of around 70 and everyone was looking at him, asking what next? Lapp made the decision to resume operation pretty much immediately. He had so much support from the team, and our clients. Everyone trusted him – and their trust was well placed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/187271/image/large-0f5c4b7b67b6b504a54bd421faf44ba2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/187271">Like a phoenix from the ashes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> came back with even more vigour. In 2013, just one year after the event, S<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">unreef Yachts</a> presented two new superyacht concepts – a 64m trimaran concept and the Sunreef 165 Ultimate, the first from the popular series. The industry had not only cottoned onto the strength of the Polish builder, but to the value of catamarans more generally. Conversations were rolling and more designers were adding multihulls to their portfolios. Catamarans weren’t synonymous with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, they were in vogue. And this trend has only continued upwards, especially given the positive advances they offer on the ecological front. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217057/image/large-cdb33dec87739692a755aa801b46f5e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217057">The Polish shipyard has stayed ahead of the curve and launched the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco brand in 2020, with Nico Rosberg the German-Finish Formula One driver championing the series as ambassador. The series was well received and in 2021 its composite-integrated solar power system won the UIM Environmental Award, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 60 “E” was touted Best Electric Sailboat at the Gustave Trouvé Awards, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco range won the Eco Green Catamaran category at the World Yachts Trophies. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> continues to capitalise on this success and this year it launched its first-ever yacht to feature a solar skin. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224742/image/large-0d3a4514a83af69b6d9512b7a6104838.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224742">With its line of catamarans in such high demand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> has outgrown its shipyards in Poland and is now expanding into the Middle East with a new shipyard in Ras Al-Khaimah, which will begin production next year. Much like the global stage, both regions are also suggesting a vested interest in what catamarans have to offer.&nbsp;Turkey and the UAE are becoming major markets and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> wants to be closer to its clients in both of these regions. On top, it is a strategic choice to be located in Dubai, the city of the future. Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. Can you give us some insight to what is involved?Hull form design can range from the simple to the complex in any vessel, superyacht or otherwise. How simple or complex one makes it really depends on the driving aims of a number of outcomes that need to be achieved in the final design. These typically include propulsive efficiency, comfort (seakeeping), construction considerations and practical alignment to the design intent of the overall vessel / its functionality. It is possible to address all of these in a simplistic manner, or equally with a high degree of engineering effort. Also, in the real world of commerce, time, budget and other resources play a role.In general, for a superyacht there is no one overall factor that dominates to the detriment of others. Some projects have a bias one way or another, but achieving an optimised result that delivers the very best result across all of these outcomes demands a rigorous process. Whilst not complex per se, it requires a high degree of insight via experience and grounding in a clear strategic approach to leverage the best result, when set against real-world commercial constraints.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325411/image/large-824189ecde9fb6967bcd09e46988355a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325411">It must be daunting to start with a blank sheet of paper, where do you even begin?Any notion of a blank sheet of paper is a misnomer. While every project results in a unique hull form that is specific to that design, one’s ability to optimise quickly, effectively in terms of results and with low technical (and therefore commercial) risk, means that we always begin via examination of our hull form family. By family I mean the many hulls that have been tested and / or proven in service, and the accompanying insight derived from the experience in their development. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> that spans about thirty years of development reaching back into our heritage in specialised commercial vessels as well as superyachts. Marry to this a collaborative approach in development, with an experienced shipyard partner(s), and also model test institutions, the sum of the collective knowledge that can go into a new hull form is potentially very significant.&nbsp;It would be easy to select a ‘parent hull’ and simply manipulate and develop to achieve a good result on a new project, that is a fairly straightforward process. We take a more strategic approach aimed at the progressive development of a hull form family. That progressive development ensures that we are, over each successive generation, investigating, pursuing and employing technical developments that embody an engrained evolution of knowledge, data driven outcomes, and insight.There are exceptions to this. In more ‘blue-sky’ projects where novel or experimental fundamental technology is being explored then a ground up approach where you “challenge everything” is taken, but this is not suitable for conventional projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325412/image/large-7cf075d26588c70a0a160061ddd73616.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325412">In this evolutionary approach could the use of Artificial Intelligence and other computational methods be employed?The short answer to that is yes. The advancement of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) over the last half century (yes that long) has meant that the exploration of strategic evolutions has become faster, more reliable and more cost effective, certainly in the regime of propulsive efficiency. It has advanced the state of the art into progressively smaller steps because the state of the art is now very mature. The use of other computational methods encompassed by AI have and are bringing a new dimension to the state of the art. Ultimately they will serve to enable us to find new innovations, which in a mature state of the art environment, become progressively more demanding in time and resources to find. I personally think the real task for any AI, is to challenge the biases and paradigms that are an inherent part of being human. From that central family other variants are in development for different areas of the market in which we are active, our ‘Type-De’ series, specifically optimised for the use of azimuthing thruster propulsors (pod) with one keel over 110-metre currently under construction and a 130-metre in development. Our Type-L family addresses a smaller region of the market, namely the sub-85 metre load line in the 80/90 metre range, with the latest 80 metre variant having its keel laid this summer. All of these families have evolved around a blended optimisation of efficiency and comfort, adapting for progressive improvements in propulsor and stabilisation technologies.Our Series-UE (Ultra Efficient), as was initially created to underpin the LIFE platform upon which the 109-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bravo Eugenia109.0m (357'7&quot;)Oceanco2018">Bravo Eugenia</a> was built. We have a new platform to launch based on the 3rd generation of UE Series, that is quite unusual and should enable design USP to be created in the market.Finally we have been actively developing smaller families, such as that which underpins our 50m Spitfire in Turkey, that is derived from mature and proven patrol vessel designs, yacht support operations derived from offshore oil and gas supply designs that have proven operation in very demanding conditions. Finally our Type-S series is a very refined and elegant design family incorporating integrated propulsion systems, the first 45 metre variant of which has been delivered from Turkey. SES Yachts: A 50-year journey of custom crafted excellence

"Originally, I was looking for a motor catamaran for my personal use. After exploring different motor catamarans and test-driving some of them, I couldn't find one that met my expectations," he shares, "I'm 1.95 metres tall, so from my point of view most of the catamarans are much too small to be comfortable, especially on long voyages.” Wuttke, therefore, took matters into his own hands.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325169/image/large-395eb329754ee0c2222a95115f313e15.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325169">"I started conceptualising my own ideas and commissioned several yacht designs," Wuttke recalls. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> has announced plans to expand into the Middle East with a new shipyard in Ras Al-Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224740/image/large-29239dd899515f0f9617f62ec248f87c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224740">This is the first time the Polish shipyard has set up shop overseas, and the yard has said the decision comes from a “rising demand from the Middle East, Asia and Australia” for its catamarans.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> currently operates two construction sites in Poland, and this facility in Ras Al-Khaimah is said to be “state-of-the-art”.
