When it comes to disruptive superyacht brands there aren’t many that have caused as much of a riot as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a>. As the Polish shipbuilder pops the cork for its 20th anniversary, it has much to celebrate, having overcome some serious challenges since its inception, all of which have made it stronger. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is not only disruptive – it’s punk rock and extremely cool.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224720/image/large-baafe4c2e7762ae9ff47bf2640404830.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224720">At the turn of the millennium the superyacht industry was one saturated with monohulls. Those looking for something different, something beamier and something just as luxurious were pressed to find one. Francis Lapp, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, was one of those unsatisfied minorities who enjoyed what catamarans had to offer, but was dissatisfied with the quality of finish and the lack of glamour that was available on the market.&nbsp;“I was operating a successful catamaran charter business in Madagascar in the late 1990s, which had a fully booked calendar season after season. But even though I had some of the best catamarans on the market, they were still plastic yachts that didn’t stand up to the level of quality of monohulls from the same category. This had to change,” Lapp explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242999/image/large-8b5d75aa5004b21a679f125367d4f355.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242999">Lapp was on a mission and he knew that to achieve the high-standard that catamarans deserved he had to build one himself. During this initial journey he came across the historic Gdansk shipyard in Poland and started to gather a team of experts to help him actualise his vision. In 2003 Lapp’s vision hit the water, as the world’s first-ever ocean going luxury catamaran, the 22.5-metre Sunreef 74 was launched in Gdansk. Not only was this the first catamaran to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with monohulls in terms of quality, it was the first catamaran with a flybridge. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242998/image/large-03c54f83baafdc88927fabbe28a4238f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242998">The company’s success stems from Francis Lapp being an outsider to the world of yacht, he grew up far away from the water of boating and as a result brought a completely new approach to yacht design. But while the launch of the first luxury catamaran was heralded a great success in Gdansk, its initial reception wasn’t well received when it made its debut at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. Lapp had his hopes high for the event, but he barely had any visitors onboard. It was just too different, too radical: first it was a catamaran and second it was built in Poland. There was somewhat of a lack of trust, as Lapp was presenting an innovative world of firsts that the industry just wasn’t ready for.Luckily for the superyacht sector, Lapp wasn’t deterred. He just had to contend with a larger PR drive and that was for Poland itself. Not only was Lapp pushing a cultural change within the industry, peddling luxury multihulls in a world exclusively reserved for monohulls, but he also had to showcase the breadth of talent that Poland had to offer. Poland is that place in Europe where luxury brands thrive and there’s some serious manufacturing here, and to prove it Lapp started hosting a series of lifestyle events, inviting guests from all over the world. They were a success and helped put Poland back on the map as a provider of outstanding luxury products.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232891/image/large-fe9c83430a584635ed02186db5935c84.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232891"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232896/image/large-541b59c1b11243b60fc558e441da3a4c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232896"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s operations in Gdansk were also championing this as Lapp and his team weren’t content with redefining the very definition of catamaran only once, they championed the platform year in and year out with a revolutionary overthrow of what’s possible. In 2008 it launched the world’s first double decked power catamaran, and then two years later it delivered not one but two catamaran superyachts: the 31.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 102, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> and the 34.72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 114, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74201/image/large-9329a2f27feb7248e67e94dac5e08628.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74201"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74340/image/large-e4f2bbef9e2ce16ebf6b4e296bec3756.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74340">In just 10 years <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had cornered the catamaran segment and redefined the very meaning of luxury catamarans. The Poland-based builder had confirmed its prowess and created a new awareness of the virtues catamarans had to offer. Its reception was far from that at its inaugurating Monaco Yacht Show, as in 2011 both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> were finalists in two coveted ceremonies, the World Superyacht Awards and the Showboat Design Awards.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had become a formidable force and was rapidly growing in stature. But was soon stopped dead when a fire broke out at its facilities and completely burnt down the production centre, including a number of in-build projects.&nbsp;Lapp was travelling to Turkey at the time for a meeting in Istanbul when he received a call from Gdansk with the news. He jumped straight on a plane back to Poland where his team of around 70 and everyone was looking at him, asking what next? Lapp made the decision to resume operation pretty much immediately. He had so much support from the team, and our clients. Everyone trusted him – and their trust was well placed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/187271/image/large-0f5c4b7b67b6b504a54bd421faf44ba2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/187271">Like a phoenix from the ashes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> came back with even more vigour. In 2013, just one year after the event, S<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">unreef Yachts</a> presented two new superyacht concepts – a 64m trimaran concept and the Sunreef 165 Ultimate, the first from the popular series. Francis Lapp was also awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Cannes Yachting Festival. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/215502/image/large-e407475158ad31fec8f78a4c87d25d0a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/215502"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> continued to ramp up production, delivering fresh novel designs year after year. The industry had not only cottoned onto the strength of the Polish builder, but to the value of catamarans more generally. Conversations were rolling and more designers were adding multihulls to their portfolios. Catamarans weren’t synonymous with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, they were in vogue. And this trend has only continued upwards, especially given the positive advances they offer on the ecological front. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217057/image/large-cdb33dec87739692a755aa801b46f5e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217057">The Polish shipyard has stayed ahead of the curve and launched the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco brand in 2020, with Nico Rosberg the German-Finish Formula One driver championing the series as ambassador. The series was well received and in 2021 its composite-integrated solar power system won the UIM Environmental Award, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 60 “E” was touted Best Electric Sailboat at the Gustave Trouvé Awards, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco range won the Eco Green Catamaran category at the World Yachts Trophies. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> continues to capitalise on this success and this year it launched its first-ever yacht to feature a solar skin. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224742/image/large-0d3a4514a83af69b6d9512b7a6104838.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224742">With its line of catamarans in such high demand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> has outgrown its shipyards in Poland and is now expanding into the Middle East with a new shipyard in Ras Al-Khaimah, which will begin production next year. It also has a number of sales offices around the world; one in Fort Lauderdale, the United States, and another in Istanbul, Turkey.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243000/image/large-fa9ca39c0b2027abbe71c0b0a232e0a1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243000">The decision to concentrate its efforts in the east was driven by a growing yacht culture in the regions, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> want to be strategically positioned to benefit from these blossoming markets. Much like the global stage, both regions are also suggesting a vested interest in what catamarans have to offer.&nbsp;Turkey and the UAE are becoming major markets and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> wants to be closer to its clients in both of these regions. On top, it is a strategic choice to be located in Dubai, the city of the future. In less than ten years <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a> has evolved from a small brokerage office in Fort Lauderdale with a couple dozen staff members, into a powerhouse full-service international superyacht brokerage, with a global clientele and an impressive portfolio of yachts for sale, charter and management. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219125/image/large-76d0c4739a3321cb41031ed70f0e4fd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219125">While the superyachting industry as a whole has of course grown in recent years, approximately doubling in size, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> has outperformed the sector growth enormously, expanding tenfold in the last eight years alone, and in the process overtaking many more established industry competitors. Daniel Ziriakus, the company’s President &amp; COO, has been with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> for most of that decade, and he sat down with SYT to share his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities that superyacht brokerage firms face today, and the secrets of N&amp;J’s success to date.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219124/image/large-eb22920ece83e9b24e076486379b2f0f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219124">“Data has been a major factor in our success, allowing us to spend our money wisely in the areas where it will have the greatest return”, explains Ziriakus. “And our marketing capabilities have also helped us to look different, especially from the more hidebound of our competition. Over the past decade we have built a comprehensive support structure in-house which encompasses marketing, business intelligence, tech development, PR and events, in-house video production (which almost no one else has), and strategic partnerships. These marketing teams consist of more than 30 people on staff, and include an intelligence team dedicated to data research. I really don’t know of any other brokerage firm that has invested so much in these categories, and it has definitely helped us to differentiate ourselves with our clients and win more and more of our competitor’s business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35342/image/large-bdee32c15b4a067e6002354accf83f97.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35342">The brokerage's acquisition in 2021 by industry titan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> has certainly given the company the financial firepower to make this transition more quickly, but there was always a focus on data analytics and marketing, even prior to the takeover. “Many brokerage houses have just one or two employees who provide their yachting data, but it's generally a slow and outdated manual process that is rarely capable of finding the right yachts first – something which is one of the most important roles expected of a broke by their clientele. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. N&amp;J’s investment in data has enabled them to ride the sector wave with massive success, including reporting recently that its brokers sold 36% more yachts on average per broker than its closest competitor in 2022, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours during 2022.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> isn't in the news for its extensive catalogue of sales, the brokerage house is stealing the limelight with partnership after partnership, and for Ziriakus this has also been one of the greatest growth assets for the company. “The strategic partnerships team has been working hard to build deep, multi-year partnerships with other brands that go far beyond simply sharing a logo or sponsoring events. It has truly been a business development drive to build powerful PR campaigns, events and activations that work directly with UHNW client segments. With the carefully selected and powerful partners that we have, for example NetJets and Airbus, we have created an integrated programme to offer clients a wider array of services, and it has been a phenomenal success at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">Northrop &amp; Johnson</a>.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35345/image/large-3227dab3db722f3690b5e19a306f889e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35345">The multifaceted approach <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> employs is just as strong in its marketing. Content creation is a leading strategy for the brand, and it employs not just one but five videographers and editors who shoot high end productions of yachts all over the world. While this isn’t in and of itself particularly revolutionary, the work the production team does with former broker David Seal is.Seal runs a YouTube channel for the company called Yachts for Sale, and shoots video content for the brokerage firm. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. Clean data, strategic partnerships and video production are the three areas that we excel in, and which not every brokerage recognises as an asset or invests in as we do.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/214846/image/large-72c5c3de41c239666e2b50bdd062a55f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/214846">Another key element to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a>’s success is the mindset of people first. The company exists to support its salespeople and services, and therefore its clients. It is this mentality that has enabled the company to build amazing features that support exactly what the brokers need, creating a better working environment for its employees and in turn benefiting the end user – the superyacht owner.&nbsp;In a decade where the company has already expanded tenfold, the next question is what will the next decade bring and can they build on their success to become the market leader. &nbsp;

While the most recent was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo Yachts</a>, which builds yachts in the 24-73 metre range, is a true reflection of this blossoming market.&nbsp;“We don’t only cater to the Polish market, though,” Uznanski explained. “We have clients all over the world whom we offer both brokerage and charter services for &nbsp;– one of my most recent charter clients, as an example, is based in Dubai.”&nbsp;The charter department of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6641" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Patrick Marine (Company)">Patrick Marine</a> with its dedicated domain (<a href="http://patrickmarine.pl/charters/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">www.patrickmarinecharters.com</a>) achieved great success – roughly 40 weeks of charter per year with €70,000 net average charter price – the firm competes well with the average European brokerage house.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/257953/image/large-a07f72a3d62a33a0a9e786ae278d4888.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/257953">“We’re particularly proud of our charter team which we brought together just five years ago. Patrick Marine: How a boutique yacht company cornered the market and built a strong global presence

There is a deft art to creating bespoke one-of-a-kind tenders, especially as they come in such a variety of shapes and sizes. The demands placed on these smaller vessels are just as high as those of the motherships – in some instances, even more. Topaz) pitched the project. The 11.25-metre Open Sports limousine tender elegantly skims across the water with grace and comfort, thanks to her ingeniously engineered hull and two punchy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> D6 400 horsepower diesel engines.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> furnished the custom Topaz Convertible with a cream, rounded settee that wraps a heavily varnished coffee table. Befit for a tender belonging to such an outstanding mothership, the Topaz Convertible is suave, sophisticated and a point of pride for owner and guests to embark from when perusing the treasures onland. Her crowning feature though is undoubtedly her hardtop convertible roof – a world’s first for a tender of this size – which allows for usage in any weather condition. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256232/image/large-8988d9422027cffa438b371dd20a6e71.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256232">19m Octopus Dive TenderAt 18.8-metres the custom-built Octopus Dive Tender is one of the largest power boats to complement a superyacht. With a penchant for speed and a requirement to reach some of the most remote and daring dive locations in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had a challenge. A challenge that a ready-made solution could never cater to. The marketplace for ready-made solutions might be thriving, but it’s not perfect.Australia’s resident designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/98" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sam Sorgiovanni Designs P/L (Company)">Sam Sorgiovanni</a> oversaw her design – and most definitely delivered. The Octopus Dive Tender is refined, lavish and brimming with amenities expected on a yacht, not a tender. She can carry as many as 10 guests, who can kick back in utmost comfort in her plush saloon, and she has a generous aft deck for seamless access to the water. Thanks to twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines, the Octopus Dive Tender can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256228/image/large-e97a5f6fe4b00aa7785de9dd3a193030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256228">10m Secret Limousine&nbsp;Many superyachts have a low tender transom garage, which is typically used to store a RIB or water toys. But the space can also be utilised for a more luxurious limousine tender – you just have to be clever. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had to keep the tender’s height under two metres, which makes an enclosed aft normally impossible. To counter this, an electronically operated hardtop was fitted so once out the garage the shell roof can be opened to welcome the owner and guests onboard.The 9.8-metre Secret Limousine tender is fitted with twin D4 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> diesel engines that deliver a top speed of 48 knots. Topaz), is a 12-metre custom-built Cargo Catamaran. This tender was commissioned to serve the yacht, acting as a private taxi, a dive platform and the vessel to supply fuel and cargo to and from shore. To facilitate dive expeditions, the Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a modular unit fitted to the front deck with an 18+ dive bottle capacity. Her bow was also customised to aid guests with seamless sea access.&nbsp;The 12-metre Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a pair of D6 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> Diesels coupled to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5769" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hamilton Jet (Company)">Hamilton</a> HJ 292 water jets that deliver a top speed of 35 knots. She’s incredibly versatile and is handy for fishing excursions, equipped with all necessary paraphernalia. Five of the most impressive custom-build superyacht tenders from Vikal

Over the last decade and a half, the Italian designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6168" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Francesco Struglia Design (Company)">Francesco Struglia</a> has built a career working with some of the top names in the yachting industry. Cutting his teeth with the inimitable <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/105" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zuccon International Project (Company)">Zuccon International Project</a>, Struglia has learnt from the best since his very earliest days in design, cultivating a childhood passion for drawing into a formidable career as consultant to one of the world’s largest shipyards. Today his studio is focusing its energies on the superyacht sector, and in addition to his yachting , Struglia is also building a name for himself as the designer of bespoke and production yachting furniture. We sat down with Francesco for an interview, to find out more about his mutli-faceted approach to all-things design.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256239/image/large-9c6a34846b801d1a5739b31a9685bc08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256239">“I was very fortunate during my studies to have been taught by Giovanni Zuccon,” explained Francesco, “who took me under his wing and brought me into the amazing world of yacht design. I learned the intricacies of fibreglass yacht construction, and, working on exterior and layout planning, was given the opportunity to pour my artistic passion into the creation of unique vessels. It was very inspiring.” After his period at the Italian studio, Francesco turned to Northern Europe and joined the ranks of the famous <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega Architects</a> under Frank Laupman, who Struglia believes is the very best in the industry within the 50 metre segment. In the Netherlands, Struglia had the opportunity to combine his passionate and romantic Italian design approach, with an effective, creative, and time scheduled real Dutch workflow. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256236/image/large-292dd35fccc32701de1aba2b4176b31b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256236"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256234/image/large-407f33146083d390d9d8c9189e3c1bd1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256234">It wasn’t long after his tenure at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/55" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Omega Architects (Company)">Omega</a> that Struglia found himself back in Italy and working in the Style Department Team of Giovanna Vitelli at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>. Working closely alongside the technical teams, Francesco became closely entrenched within the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> styling, and after many years of work, with his new own studio established, he was given the opportunity to pitch for a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> motor boat series, the series which later became the Verve, styled in its entirety by Francesco himself. The Verve has now sold more than 100 units, far exceeding any expectations Francesco, or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a>, had for the model.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256246/image/large-91ba3e6484039c80652e30d433423f3b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256246"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248918/image/large-6ac433b20523fe5f7812fa6f4e2f3675.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248918">Then in the late 2010’s, the studio was contacted by Giovanna Vitelli and asked to work on the start of a new series, signing the first model this time for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. “It really began in an informal way, building that strong relationship with the shipyard over a number of years meant that they had faith that I was capable of distilling the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> mentality and design ethos into a new model. We worked closely with the Benetti team on what became the Motopanfilo series, which was always intended to be a classic motor yacht series.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248906/image/large-8ef9f449ef54f2a5e58f662937bea44d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248906">Eight hulls of the 37-metre Motopanfilo series have now been sold, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10815" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="eh²36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Eh²</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10892" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hayat36.8m (120'9&quot;)Benetti SpA2022">Hayat</a> both launched in 2022. The yacht was Struglia’s first solo superyacht design and it's no surprise that the model has been such a success, with his deep and intimate understanding of the shipyard’s styling. In fact to this day, the studio works closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a>, consulting the designers, both in-house and externally, on new models. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/248911/image/large-16bb8aaf031363dd431d75c3c908a53b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/248911">It is clear in speaking to Francesco that he has a true form-equals-function mentality when it comes to design, something he has no doubt learned over a career with some of the industry's top designers. Removing the superfluous and distilling his designs right down to include only what is necessary means that his lines are characteristically minimal, flowing and uninterrupted. It's this same design ethos that the studio takes to all of its design projects, working both on industrial projects and designing bespoke furniture.In 2020, the studio entered into a design partnership with ARAS Italia, an Italian-pedigree company working with artisans in the leather industry and which has an excellent portfolio in the automotive industries. The goal of the partnership was to design two driving seats for the yachting sector and a bar stool for the luxury yachting furniture sector and the first three products were presented by ARAS at the <a href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE - 2022">2022 METSTRADE</a> to much applause from the industry. It will also have four docks for yachts up to 200-metres in length and three for those up to 155-metres.&nbsp;An additional 40 mooring points will be available and 25 refit spots on shore, which will be serviced by a lift capable of carrying 80-metre yachts.

The course aims to create real career opportunities for participants, such as naval carpentry, deck fitting, engine mechanics, the list goes on.The first edition of the three-month course officially launched in March, and will be held at the “Don Bosco” Professional Training Centre in Forlì. After this first stage in Forlì, the Scuola dei Mestieri will move to Mondolfo and Sarnico in September to involve more young people in the new project. As a world leader in the design, construction, and sales of luxury yachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> will share their expertise to the participants.
