In 2022 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> celebrated 240 years in business. Few companies can boast such longevity. Ever fewer can claim a dozen world firsts, which have allowed the firm to sail ahead of the fleet since 1782. The passion for invention began in 1809. A 16-year-old shipwright named William Camper joined an unremarkable boatyard in Gosport on England’s south coast. His apprenticeship certificate is now deemed so important that it’s housed in Britain’s National Maritime Museum. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241649/image/large-1335ec890609a5590dc4be09f4eb9481.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241649">William Camper’s first recorded launch was Breeze. At the King’s Cup this 16.5m cutter sliced competitors from the Royal Yacht Squadron to shreds. Squadron members fought among themselves to commission Camper for their new build. Earls, Viscounts and Members of Parliament ordered racing boats 15m, 25m and even 35m in length — an astounding size for the day. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241648/image/large-4b33f3c5582611b1e668089f84a8057e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241648">Camper’s designs sailed the seven seas. His 24m schooner Nancy Dawson explored north past Point Barrow in Alaska, the point of no return for Arctic exploration. On her journey back to England she became the first yacht to circumnavigate the globe.In 1842 the 14-year-old Ben Nicholson joined the firm. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper and Nicholson</a> expanded the Gosport yard from racing yachts into “English gentlemans’ floating hotels” — the luxury yachts familiar today. Nicholson’s ultimate design was 44-metre Amphitrite. This magnificent schooner belonged to a Scottish aristocrat, then a Swedish industrialist, followed by a German production company where she starred in 40 television shows. Now a cadet training vessel, Amphitrite remains one of the world’s oldest working yachts. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241650/image/large-24a40d25de0fc46a9606d93c9f1170f8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241650">The ‘s’ was added to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> after Ben Nicholson’s three sons took the helm. The middle child, Charles E Nicholson, showed little early promise. Yet once introduced to the Gosport shipyard in 1888, he began styling racing yachts like it was his God-given gift. His first racing commission, Coquette, scooped 110 prizes in her first competitive season. For the once-in-a-generation naval architect, far greater accolades were to come.&nbsp;Charles E Nicholson lived through boom, bust, two World Wars and an era of changing aspirations, materials and racing rules. He led <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> to victory in all. With the 23-metre Istria <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/229" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Charles E. Nicholson (Company)">Charles</a> scored two world firsts: the lightweight composite hull and the Marconi racing rig. Istria&nbsp;took an incredible 35 flags from 36 starts, causing the entire racing industry (including the royal yacht itself) to ape her style.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241653/image/large-fb6767408f05878f26d9f6c937d5d328.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241653">The list goes on. With the 29.5m J-Class <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour39.56m (129'9&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1934">Endeavour</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/229" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Charles E. Nicholson (Company)">Charles</a> came closer to winning the America’s Cup than any competitor until the 1980s, losing on a technicality. With the 75.5-metre Philante, he designed the biggest private motor yacht built in Britain until modern times. Philante served with honour during World War Two, running seven treacherous Atlantic crossings. Today she sails with distinction as the Royal Norwegian yacht KS Norge. Legends never die.&nbsp;After World War Two, the coming generation of Peter and George Nicholson reinvented the yacht industry once again. Having largely been associated with yacht design and build, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> formed a new division for yacht charter. In Gosport, Peter pioneered GRP production yachts that sold by the hundred. These included 45.57-metre Chambel IV. Today she cruises as <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yachts/northwind-ii" target="_blank">Northwind II</a>, with her 22k gold taps installed by the designer who styled John F Kennedy’s White House.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241651/image/large-81a01e5eab56476f03271076558c556e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241651">Around 1950, George Nicholson moved to Cannes to help <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>’ appointed agent Derek Burton to generate a refit business. In 1961, their hard-earned success led to the formation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a> International, the brokerage wing of the company. The brokerage side of the business performed steadily, and the company set many records for the most expensive yachts sold, becoming leaders in the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/241652/image/large-649284fa62e150778113263c3ed4dbed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/241652">During the 1960s, offices opened in Palma and Monaco and by 1992 the business had crossed the Atlantic. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">C&amp;N</a> established offices all across North America, making the company a household name from the Mediterranean to California. The company expanded the scope of services to sale &amp; purchase, charter, new-build, yacht management, crew placement, insurance, and charter management.<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/companies/camper-nicholsons-international" target="_blank">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>’ latest investment is in the industry’s first Innovation &amp; Technology Hub. While other agencies rely on third-party software, the company now operates bespoke platforms for its seven divisions. The vessel, a top ten superyacht at the time of her launch, was virtually marketed in a metaverse arena by the oldest name in yachting. We spoke with Justin Beard, Marketing and Sales Development Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/28" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Aquila85.6m (280'10&quot;)Derecktor Shipyards2010">Derecktor</a>, to find out a little more about this titan of American yachting. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251765/image/large-20e7c52020c060c2309484b9b543e89a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251765">What were the origins of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor Shipyards</a>&nbsp;and how has it continued after Bob Derecktor?When Bob was in high school, sometime during the 1930s, he designed a 26-foot sloop and built it in his family’s backyard in White Plains, New York – using oak for the frames, fir for the deck and pine for the mast. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. This is her first trip in over 30 years. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255426/image/large-59f8d68d4ad4c4f939fe246b34377e8a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255426"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10513" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Llys Helig32.77m (107'6&quot;)John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd1922">Llys Helig</a> was locally referred to as the “Burnham Titanic'' after she dramatically capsized in the town’s moorings in 2017. Her remarkable survival astounded the local residents, who witnessed her decks and superstructure slowly decay. Initially, the local council, harbour authority and yacht club were adamant for her to be cut up and removed, deeming her to be an eyesore. However, London-based businessman Howard Dawber decided to take on the hefty task of salvaging and restoring the yacht, and bought <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10513" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Llys Helig32.77m (107'6&quot;)John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd1922">Llys Helig</a> in 2018. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255427/image/large-7c2d8e0001f63dc3b91b5cf89f94bce1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255427">With help from the Essex Marina, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10513" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Llys Helig32.77m (107'6&quot;)John I Thornycroft & Co Ltd1922">Llys Helig</a> was raised from the mud and refloated in 2020. Now, she has been loaded into a floating dry dock and transported to Sutton Wharf’s boatyard in Rochford for surveillance and repairs. The tow and repairs are being led by Mike’s Boatyard of Leigh-on-Sea. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/255425/image/large-0ce89d2c59466ea1fa6908d94875d508.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/255425">In terms of specs, the 157 GT yacht measures at 32.73-metres with a 5.82-metre beam. She was initially fitted with twin oil engines by Plenty &amp; Son of Newbury, and was constructed from steel, with a steel and teak superstructure and pine decks. Before the incident, she spent 30 years being used as a house boat.

As a result of this, she was sold to aeroplane builder Sir Richard Fairey, who named her Evadne. Nicholson (Company)">Charles E. Nicholson</a>. When the 23.91-metre 1935 classic ketch sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> berthed in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1857" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Porto Montenegro (Company)">Porto Montenegro</a> some 10 years ago, her fate was pretty unknown. The famed trophy winner was falling into disrepair; she was riddled with worms and leaking badly. Even in such a derelict condition, she was pulling heartstrings. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175118/image/large-8b1573b603a3e12ed6131a284eab06eb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175118">While her owner had enjoyed a long relationship with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a>, the work to keep her afloat was too costly so her restoration ground to a halt. She was put on the market around the same time as Edward Daniell, an avid sailor and Service Contractor at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1857" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Porto Montenegro (Company)">Porto Montenegro</a>, sadly lost his partner last year. The couple was besotted by the elegant French lady, so “the timing was too much of a coincidence,” Daniell said.&nbsp;“Purchasing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> meant I had an elderly mistress that took my time and money; I think my late wife was instrumental in organising this for me,” Daniell said. “Although she disliked boats and was scared of drowning, she always liked <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a>. The timing of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> coming on the market was her way of making sure that I was well looked after and had something to do.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175121/image/large-0b497cf69dc49f744e27ae24dd710d56.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175121"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> was built by Mr. F. Rey of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5195" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Chantiers de Normandie (Company)">Chantiers Navals de Normandie</a>, in Fècamp, during the interwar period to a design drawn up by Mr François Camatte. Her owner requested a Bermudian ketch that handled well and that could outpace fellow sailing yachts at regattas. When she first hit the water in June of 1935 she was around a metre and a half shorter than she is today (22.3-metres with a 16.4m LOA).&nbsp;She was constructed primarily out of oak and furnished with Oregon pine for the deck planks. Moulmein teak was laid for the fittings, hatches and gunwale. Her large 235 square-metre Bermudian sail plan was crafted by Eugène Ma riole from La Havre, and fashioned with an additional triangle sail that was to be set up when sailing downwind. She was state-of-the-art and equipped with electric lights and a 50-horsepower Renault diesel engine.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175119/image/large-fc640035de82cfd2d1fbf91cc43fec34.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175119">On 29th June 1935, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> embarked on her maiden voyage from Fècamp to Cannes via Gibraltar, with her owner and family onboard. Unlike the dream voyage that was envisioned, the journey was treacherous and very nearly perilous. Dire weather conditions persisted and it took 574 hours of navigation to complete the route, 320 hours of which were under sail and the remaining 253 under motor. Even without the weather abating they arrived safely, if not soundly, after travelling a total of 2,619 nautical miles.&nbsp;Little is known about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> after this frightful passage; but the fact that she has fallen into the hands of Edward Daniell is proof that she’s been well-loved over the years. She also survived WW2 and Nazi occupation – a war which saw many pleasure vessels commission for the effort.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/175120/image/large-467802a25ae642ada8c1661bf455f23f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/175120">Daniell is restoring <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10419" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="L'Odyssée23.91m (78'5&quot;)Chantiers de Normandie 1935">L'Odyssée</a> back to her former glory, making great use of the astounding talent who worked at the Arsenal Shipyard before it became <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1857" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Porto Montenegro (Company)">Porto Montenegro</a>. “When she was lifted we discovered that she was riddled with worms – and these weren't your ordinary worms, they were the size of earthworms! They had destroyed parts of the rudder, which was fortunate as they hadn’t made it to the main hull,” Daniell said. On the eastern Gulf of Thailand, around an hour and half drive from Bangkok, is Chon Buri: a thriving province that's lured backpackers and bohemians for centuries. It’s no wonder why – Chon Buri has a coastline peppered with natural enclaves of white sand beaches, which are lapped by crystal clear waters. But what is lesser known about the region, is that it’s where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/222" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Concorde Yachts (Company)">Concorde Yachts</a> built and delivered its small dynasty. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/245559/image/large-bb6bd4290776c4bdda0695336d9d1617.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/245559"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/222" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Concorde Yachts (Company)">Concorde Yachts</a> was in operation throughout the 1990s and delivered four yachts; a batch of three sailing yachts between 1991-1994 and then a motor yacht in 1997. The site was commissioned for a project spearheaded by the founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a>, Pekka Koskenkylä, who wanted to design and build three large sailing yachts. The first and third units, the 40-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2340" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Latitude40.0m (131'3&quot;)Concorde Yachts1991">Latitude</a> and the 41.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mirabella41.5m (136'2&quot;)Concorde Yachts1994">Mirabella</a> (ex. Mirabella III), were built for charter. The two yachts, delivered in 1991 and 1994 respectively, were commissioned by the late Joseph Vittoria, CEO of Hertz and then Avis, who was building a commercial sailing yacht fleet.&nbsp;The second unit from the series was the 41-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/243" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Pure 241.0m (134'6&quot;)Concorde Yachts1992">Ocean Pure 2</a> (ex. Bruce Farr plied his racing experience into the schematics of these three cruising yachts, opting for hand-woven sandwich laminated fibreglass (GRP) to keep weight down and efficiency up. She can carry as many as 11 guests and six crew. Her accommodation comprises a master suite with a walk-in wardrobe, a VIP suite, two doubles and a guest suite with both a double and a single bed. In addition, she benefitted from a full hull inspection, repaired keel and hull joint, copper coat antifouling, and new seacocks. When it comes to disruptive superyacht brands there aren’t many that have caused as much of a riot as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a>. As the Polish shipbuilder pops the cork for its 20th anniversary, it has much to celebrate, having overcome some serious challenges since its inception, all of which have made it stronger. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is not only disruptive – it’s punk rock and extremely cool.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224720/image/large-baafe4c2e7762ae9ff47bf2640404830.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224720">At the turn of the millennium the superyacht industry was one saturated with monohulls. Those looking for something different, something beamier and something just as luxurious were pressed to find one. Francis Lapp, founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, was one of those unsatisfied minorities who enjoyed what catamarans had to offer, but was dissatisfied with the quality of finish and the lack of glamour that was available on the market.&nbsp;“I was operating a successful catamaran charter business in Madagascar in the late 1990s, which had a fully booked calendar season after season. But even though I had some of the best catamarans on the market, they were still plastic yachts that didn’t stand up to the level of quality of monohulls from the same category. This had to change,” Lapp explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242999/image/large-8b5d75aa5004b21a679f125367d4f355.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242999">Lapp was on a mission and he knew that to achieve the high-standard that catamarans deserved he had to build one himself. During this initial journey he came across the historic Gdansk shipyard in Poland and started to gather a team of experts to help him actualise his vision. In 2003 Lapp’s vision hit the water, as the world’s first-ever ocean going luxury catamaran, the 22.5-metre Sunreef 74 was launched in Gdansk. Not only was this the first catamaran to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with monohulls in terms of quality, it was the first catamaran with a flybridge. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242998/image/large-03c54f83baafdc88927fabbe28a4238f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242998">The company’s success stems from Francis Lapp being an outsider to the world of yacht, he grew up far away from the water of boating and as a result brought a completely new approach to yacht design. But while the launch of the first luxury catamaran was heralded a great success in Gdansk, its initial reception wasn’t well received when it made its debut at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>. Lapp had his hopes high for the event, but he barely had any visitors onboard. It was just too different, too radical: first it was a catamaran and second it was built in Poland. There was somewhat of a lack of trust, as Lapp was presenting an innovative world of firsts that the industry just wasn’t ready for.Luckily for the superyacht sector, Lapp wasn’t deterred. He just had to contend with a larger PR drive and that was for Poland itself. Not only was Lapp pushing a cultural change within the industry, peddling luxury multihulls in a world exclusively reserved for monohulls, but he also had to showcase the breadth of talent that Poland had to offer. Poland is that place in Europe where luxury brands thrive and there’s some serious manufacturing here, and to prove it Lapp started hosting a series of lifestyle events, inviting guests from all over the world. They were a success and helped put Poland back on the map as a provider of outstanding luxury products.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232891/image/large-fe9c83430a584635ed02186db5935c84.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232891"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/232896/image/large-541b59c1b11243b60fc558e441da3a4c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/232896"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s operations in Gdansk were also championing this as Lapp and his team weren’t content with redefining the very definition of catamaran only once, they championed the platform year in and year out with a revolutionary overthrow of what’s possible. In 2008 it launched the world’s first double decked power catamaran, and then two years later it delivered not one but two catamaran superyachts: the 31.1-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 102, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> and the 34.72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 114, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74201/image/large-9329a2f27feb7248e67e94dac5e08628.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74201"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/74340/image/large-e4f2bbef9e2ce16ebf6b4e296bec3756.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/74340">In just 10 years <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had cornered the catamaran segment and redefined the very meaning of luxury catamarans. The Poland-based builder had confirmed its prowess and created a new awareness of the virtues catamarans had to offer. Its reception was far from that at its inaugurating Monaco Yacht Show, as in 2011 both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1917" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ipharra31.1m (102'0&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Ipharra</a> were finalists in two coveted ceremonies, the World Superyacht Awards and the Showboat Design Awards.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> had become a formidable force and was rapidly growing in stature. But was soon stopped dead when a fire broke out at its facilities and completely burnt down the production centre, including a number of in-build projects.&nbsp;Lapp was travelling to Turkey at the time for a meeting in Istanbul when he received a call from Gdansk with the news. He jumped straight on a plane back to Poland where his team of around 70 and everyone was looking at him, asking what next? Lapp made the decision to resume operation pretty much immediately. He had so much support from the team, and our clients. Everyone trusted him – and their trust was well placed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/187271/image/large-0f5c4b7b67b6b504a54bd421faf44ba2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/187271">Like a phoenix from the ashes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> came back with even more vigour. In 2013, just one year after the event, S<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">unreef Yachts</a> presented two new superyacht concepts – a 64m trimaran concept and the Sunreef 165 Ultimate, the first from the popular series. The industry had not only cottoned onto the strength of the Polish builder, but to the value of catamarans more generally. Conversations were rolling and more designers were adding multihulls to their portfolios. Catamarans weren’t synonymous with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a>, they were in vogue. And this trend has only continued upwards, especially given the positive advances they offer on the ecological front. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217057/image/large-cdb33dec87739692a755aa801b46f5e5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217057">The Polish shipyard has stayed ahead of the curve and launched the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco brand in 2020, with Nico Rosberg the German-Finish Formula One driver championing the series as ambassador. The series was well received and in 2021 its composite-integrated solar power system won the UIM Environmental Award, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> 60 “E” was touted Best Electric Sailboat at the Gustave Trouvé Awards, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> Eco range won the Eco Green Catamaran category at the World Yachts Trophies. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> continues to capitalise on this success and this year it launched its first-ever yacht to feature a solar skin. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/224742/image/large-0d3a4514a83af69b6d9512b7a6104838.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/224742">With its line of catamarans in such high demand, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> has outgrown its shipyards in Poland and is now expanding into the Middle East with a new shipyard in Ras Al-Khaimah, which will begin production next year. Much like the global stage, both regions are also suggesting a vested interest in what catamarans have to offer.&nbsp;Turkey and the UAE are becoming major markets and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef Yachts</a> wants to be closer to its clients in both of these regions. On top, it is a strategic choice to be located in Dubai, the city of the future. Designed by Herward A. Oehlmann and constructed under the project name Animos, the yacht was completed in 1990 as the Butterfly McQueen for an owner based in the Far East.At the time she was being described as the "World's Most Advanced Sailing Yacht", a statement that was probably true owing to the vessel's highly automated control systems. Everything from sail handling and engine controls to weighing anchor are controlled by touch-sensitive screens from Touch'n Control Systems.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/22308/image/large-beb21a1565245a75fc286e76d9a0690d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/22308">Onboard she features luxurious accommodation for twelve guests in six cherry-panelled staterooms and cabins for seven crew are provided. Engines are twin Fiat]/<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Iveco (Company)">Iveco</a> V8 diesels of 400 horsepower each, providing a maximum speed of 12 knots and a cruising speed of 10 knots. Her fuel capacity is 21,000 litres.Originally built to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1479" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Det Norske Veritas (DNV) (Company)">Norske Veritas</a> class with a GRP hull and teak-laid decks, this motorsailer has sailed extensively in the Pacific and Australasian regions over the years, as well as to other world cruising regions. The yacht today sails under the name <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Cloud39.72m (130'4&quot;)Faenoe1990">Southern Cloud</a> and is still in the Southern Ocean.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/236155/image/large-1f26a8adb5d62d41ad4cbf9e3bdf46b5.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/236155">Now let's turn to the second unique schooner that was built as Vendredi Treize at the Tecimar yard at Sainte Nazaire. Initially designed by the Danish naval architect <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2403" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="J. Ring Andersen Skibsvaerft (Company)">Jim Andersen</a> to compete in the Ostar, the British single-handed race across the Atlantic. She was the largest and fastest boat on the starting line.She was also the world's largest fibreglass sailing yacht when she was completed in 1972. Length overall was 39.13-metres with a displacement of 88 tonnes. Light winds however eventually put paid to that dream.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4377/image/large-a2ccc5add40d8ff76b30ca58fa36bfd2.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4377">The opportunity to acquire the yacht arose in 1992 when Jean Michel Tissier of Stardust Marine bought her with the intention of restoring the yacht and converting her into a fast luxury cruiser. However, the yacht proved uneconomical to repair and a new hull had to be moulded from the original.This new yacht would be christened Friday Star-Vendredi 13 with a luxurious interior by Jacques Pierrejean. Completed in 1994 her new length is 42.10-metres with a beam of 5.76-metres and a draft of 4.20-metres, Displacement was now 95 tonnes. Guest accommodation was now for ten guests and five crew and a cordon-bleu chef to provide exceptional cuisine. Power is provided by a single 300 horsepower <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1483" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cummins Inc. Originally from the UK, he settled in Newport, USA, in the late 1980s and set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> with business partner Nigel Ingram. Outside of work, Peter enjoys cycling, sailing, motorbiking, photography and tending to his beehives.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261482/image/large-8f42f4d17c286aa23635d9c9afd0624b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261482">How did you and Nigel meet and what sparked your decision to set up a company together?&nbsp;We met in Antigua in the ‘70s and became fast friends. In 1988 I was wrapping up an America’s Cup challenge and Nigel was finishing the build of a new yacht. We started chatting about what was next. As yachts were getting larger and more complicated, we felt clients needed an advocate to represent their best interests. We also believed there should be more discipline in terms of fiscal and time-related control imposed on the build process. And after 35 years it appears there was indeed a need!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/171475/image/large-def9b7fbcd7516e5756f79bc7fc282d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/171475"> You’re a sailor and in the past&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;was best known for its sailing yacht projects, but you’re now taking on more motor yachts with brands like&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. Was this a straightforward transition and how does your role change between sail and power?&nbsp;When one considers today’s sailing superyachts and their relative systems, they have more complications than the equivalent motor yachts. For example, both types of vessels have engines, generators, HVAC, AV/IT systems, cooking and domestic appliances, desalination and sewage treatment plants, and so on. But on a sailing yacht there are also masts, rigging, captive winches, booms, hydraulic furling and tensioning systems and appendages like lifting keels – all in a hull that is usually less voluminous than a motor yacht. So the transition from a technical standpoint is quite straightforward, although it should be noted that we have been doing motor yacht projects for many years and so they are not new territory for us.&nbsp;In terms of role differences, in the sailing yacht world there is more focus on the nuances of sailing performance, whereas on motor yachts the performance is well defined and based on engine kilowatts, propeller designs and, of course, the hull shape. The interiors, outfitting, finish and quality are equally important on every superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180780/image/large-1604c001b0dc9b9c1caaa60d0e99d298.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180780">What kind of decisions can you make on your own and which require the owner’s approval?&nbsp;This depends largely on the involvement and experience of the client. In many cases, we have clients that are knowledgeable and have had a string of yachts before. In those cases, the client is often closely involved and brings that experience to bear, and it can be a very collaborative affair. Where a client is perhaps building for the first time, they may need more guidance. In either case, we present them with the options available in a clear and concise manner when a decision is required and recommend the one we feel is the right choice. This gives the client the benefit of our experience and the requisite information on which to base an informed decision.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/92787/image/large-25fbaa062214a0955512eecbe552c80e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92787">Do ‘involved’ owners make your job easier or more difficult?&nbsp;Having a client closely participate in the project typically makes it more memorable for them as they are really creating their vision. In turn, this makes it more enjoyable for the entire team. Designing and building a yacht is a terrific endeavour and may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we strive to make it a rewarding experience for the client. We have developed great friendships with many of our clients that outlast the build process. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/68864/image/large-d01918c154c9386a1eba29b93edea26b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68864"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;offers yacht construction and management services. Does it make more sense if the same agency does both?&nbsp;When we started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> in 1988, we didn’t have a yacht management division. However, once we had a few yachts ‘under our belts’ it became abundantly clear that there was a requirement for post-construction support the and formalising that support in the form of a yacht management division was a service that yacht owners needed. As the vessel progresses from the build phase to the operational phase, having one company providing both services makes for a seamless transition. Not least because by that stage we have a long-standing relationship with the client, we know the vessel inside and out, we have all the data, drawings and manuals, and we know which design decisions were made and why.The rules and regulations surrounding vessel navigation and operation have also increased exponentially and the burden is such that captains and crew require shore-based support. Furthermore, the client benefits from the continuity <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> offers; crew inevitably come and go, but we are the common thread and institutional knowledge about the yacht and the programme. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75757/image/large-814590a2342fc3180dd4d70ca59bd2d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75757">Do you bring in your own preferred suppliers and/or subcontractors for new-build projects, or is that always up to the shipyard?&nbsp;To ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, we remain fiercely independent. However, over many years of operation we’ve developed strong relationships with quality suppliers, manufacturers and vendors and can recommend those to the shipyard. We also have real-world experience as to how the equipment performs at sea. However, it is the shipyard that has overall responsibility for the construction process and provides the warranty, so they ultimately decide which suppliers and subcontractors are the best fit and those they prefer to work with. &nbsp;What would you change about the way we work in the superyacht industry?&nbsp;The elapsed time from the first conversation to the yacht being handed over can be many years. As an industry, we are always seeking ways to be more efficient and shorten the time required to build one of these masterpieces &nbsp;while maintaining the high quality standards expected. The other challenge is how to build yachts that can operate in an environmentally friendly way. Emissions are being lowered. We need to continue that trend to protect the marine environment we all so enjoy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217714/image/large-e37cd890a97c5e166adce7d9d371918b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217714">Beyond the technical qualifications, what are the personal attributes needed to be a successful owner’s rep?&nbsp;On the personal side, attributes such as honesty, integrity, patience and respect. Being a good listener is also profoundly important. Other key qualities include staying focused, open-minded, nimble and the ability to adapt. Managing expectations is the most challenging aspect of the job. As these projects become larger and costlier, there are many facets to consider and with sometimes differing agendas, so the ability to develop a team with members sharing a common goal, is fundamental.&nbsp;Lastly, the experience of having been to sea in a multitude of yachts in wide-ranging conditions is enormously helpful. Turkey-based builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="FDC Yachts (Company)">FDC Yachts</a> has unveiled the second model in the Aluna series, the 39-metre Aluna 127. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Jet 2020 is the brainchild of Fulvio Codecasa, who called me to collaborate on his futuristic project.
