The superyacht fleet has a problem: while fuel cells and multifuel engines may be the future for power on board, what of the 6,000 vessels still reliant on fossil diesel? Second-generation renewable fuels may offer an immediate solution – albeit at a price.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268412/image/large-6b982a29cd25b351202b53e071fc0bfd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268412">“Yachts live forever,” says Giedo Loeff, Head of Research and Development at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>. “We have a huge, 6,000-strong fleet and we will keep on refitting them. They will survive though to the 2050 Net Zero targets, and in order to decarbonise we need to have all these vessels sail on non-fossil fuel, and they can only run on diesel today. Converting all these yachts to run something else is not impossible, but it’s not viable.”This is an eye-opening perspective, particularly when everyone seems to be touting hydrogen, methanol and fuel cells as our environmental saviours. With such a large existing fleet, 70 percent of which are below 50 metres in length, and with the technological and design challenges of future fuels still a huge hurdle to overcome, what does that mean for owners now and in the near future?It turns out there is a solution that enables the current fleet to decarbonise without making any modifications to their vessels. It is often referred to as ‘biodiesel’, although more accurately we should be calling it renewable diesel or synthetic fuel. Biodiesel has been around for some time and is used as an additive to conventional fossil diesel, but it also has a reputation for causing problems in tanks and engines, and for the sometimes non-sustainable feedstocks used to make it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268410/image/large-804600657d48ecc7db6acf403f1fd6bb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268410">But things are changing. “First, I think it is important to distinguish between the different types of sustainable diesel replacement fuels,” begins Bart Hellings, COO/CTO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7107" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="GoodFuels (Company)">GoodFuels</a>, a Dutch company committed to facilitating the energy transition away from fossil fuels that has supplied a handful of superyachts with renewable diesel. “With biodiesel, many people refer to a product called FAME (fatty acid methyl-ester) that has been around for 20 years or so, but it is way trickier from a technical perspective than conventional fossil diesel. There is also a second-generation product called HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) that is a sustainable drop-in replacement for diesel, which has properties that are similar or superior to conventional fossil diesel. This is the fuel that we think could play a very important role in the superyacht sector going forward.”The second generationHVO has been commercially available for around five years and is promoted as an alternative to diesel for transportation, in particular for fleets of trucks and for large commercial ships, as well as for aviation. Indeed, there is a growing list of refineries scaling up production of HVO. Finnish company Neste – one of the world’s largest producers of renewable diesel with refineries in Finland, The Netherlands and Singapore – claims that global renewable fuel production could reach over 1,000 megatons of oil equivalent by 2040, which it says would be enough to replace all fossil fuels used in aviation and maritime transport, as well as a substantial part of road transport. But what of the now?&nbsp;“This fuel is readily available now – it has been developed for road use and is therefore 100 percent suitable for the engines that power superyachts,” says Hellings. “The fuel we supply to the yachting segment is more or less comparable to fossil diesel – it has slightly more energy per kilogram, slight less per litre, but overall you don’t really notice a difference on board. You don’t need to recalibrate the engine or change any equipment.”This last point is key, because it opens the door for superyacht owners, captains and managers to make the decision to switch to renewable diesel. “Our experience is that you need the whole ecosystem to change,” says Hellings.&nbsp;The first person you have to convince is the one who pays the bill. To do it in a responsible way, you also need approval from the engine manufacturer, from the Class society, from the insurer, and from the manufacturers of all the other connected components. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268407/image/large-c86d9a71d80677a63c1c1de227c088ec.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268407">All the main engine manufacturers have now updated their guidance to say that renewable diesel that complies with quality standard EN15940 can be run in their engines. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a>, for instance, notes that no engine conversion process is needed, that renewable fuels are compatible with after treatment technologies such as SCR, that they are compatible with typical filters and engine oils, and that they can be stored in the same tanks as diesel fuel.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2207" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rolls-Royce Marine (Company)">Rolls-Royce</a>, parent to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a>, is taking a proactive approach with a pledge to reduce the emissions of its product portfolio by 35 per cent by 2030, and part of that will be simply moving away from fossil fuels in its combustion engines. Renewable diesel (a paraffinic fuel oil with a cetane number that is actually higher than fossil diesel) is perfect for that, as it reduces CO2 emissions by up to 90 per cent and also benefits from reduced NOx, zero SOx and less particulate matter than fossil diesel.In spite of this, the uptake of renewable diesel by the superyacht fleet has been minimal. Loeff thinks this comes down to three reasons: understanding, reputation, and cost.&nbsp;“First it’s about well-to-wake,” he explains. “If you comprehend that, you understand why HVO is something totally different from regular fossil diesel, because it is about running yachts on non-fossil energy. I don’t think everyone understands that truly.”&nbsp;Second, there is nervousness within the market about biodiesel and FAME having nasty effects on high-spec engines.&nbsp;“But HVO is different,” says Loeff, “it’s a synthetic fuel that has no contamination, and engine emissions are also reduced because the fuel has very high purity.”&nbsp;His third point is that it’s much more expensive than regular diesel, and it has to come typically from much further away when you bunker, so that’s an additional cost in the supply chain.Hellings agrees, but points out that the cost of renewable diesel also varies significantly, because some countries offer subsidies or incentives for renewable fuels. The Netherlands is a prime example.&nbsp;“We have a quite substantial incentive scheme for fuel supply to shipping, and that means if we supply HVO out of The Netherlands we would be looking at a price that is between 50 per cent and 100 per cent higher than fossil diesel,” he says. “But if we were to supply it out of the Caribbean, we would likely be looking at double or triple the price of conventional diesel.”The same is true for more localised delivery: there are no subsidies in France, for instance, meaning bunkering would be more expensive on the Côte d’Azur than in Rotterdam.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268408/image/large-2f17b53a1b4bb55e2c9681076f84c4b5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268408">Fuelling the futureAs HVO production scales up and more feedstocks become viable, does that mean the HVO will become more widely available and, at the same time, more cost effective? Moreover, has the rising price of fossil fuels following the events unfolding in eastern Europe meant that the price gap has closed?&nbsp;Unfortunately, it seems that the answer to both these questions is ‘no’. In the first instance, a combination of rigorous emissions goals and a drive for transport companies in all sectors to show they are taking positive action on climate change will likely drive demand up in line with that increase in production. On the second point, Loeff suggests that the energy market is uniform and linked whether referring to conventional fossil or renewable fuels.There is also the question of traceability. “It’s the elephant in the room with these fuels,” says Loeff. “It’s all about transparency, because the products which aren’t traceable or which don’t have the correct certification don’t have value, because you can produce a similar fuel to HVO from natural gas which is a fossil feedstock. The same is true, incidentally, for hydrogen.”&nbsp;The bigger hurdle, however, is uptake. As Loeff points out, he sees recreational craft using HVO locally in The Netherlands, but use on superyachts so far has been limited:“I haven’t heard about a yacht bunkering, or at least not for 100% HVO, and certainly not from our fleet yet,” he says. “But I think there will be some owners who understand it and are willing to pay the premium because in terms of the operational budget it’s still manageable. But I do wonder how the budget issue is resolved; I think that only happens when non-fossil is subsidised, like it is in The Netherlands.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/268409/image/large-e9c98ca190ae1515266ff5ea8a65ee57.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/268409">Rule changesThere’s another driver that may dictate the transition away from fossil fuels: legislation. It is already taking shape in the IMO relating to greenhouse gas standards, something that SYBAss is monitoring closely, but more importantly the EU is taking big steps of its own.&nbsp;“The EU has announced that ships over 5,000 GT will need to report their fuel use, both the amount of fuel and the fuel’s specification,” says Loeff. At the end of the day it will be about global warming potential (GWP) – a means of reporting warming-equivalent emissions – and the adding of that to the Emissions Trading Scheme, which represents the cost that somebody has to pay. “With non-fossil fuels like HVO there’s pretty much no GWP, but with fossil fuels there’s a lot,” Loeff adds.With the regulations applying to commercial shipping over 5,000 GT there is potential for it to include superyachts at the larger end of the scale, although there is debate as to whether yachts will slip under the radar. Either way, it speaks to a growing shift in the marine environment and it’s not hard to imagine such emissions reporting being extended downwards in the future, which would likely snare considerably more of the superyacht fleet.Arguably the most critical factor, however, is the collective conscience of the superyacht fleet and their owners. With HVO completely interchangeable with fossil diesel, even owners who baulk at the cost can take small steps toward decarbonisation by moving to 10 per cent or 20 per cent HVO in their tanks.&nbsp;“There is no real excuse to wait anymore,” Hellings urges. “We understand that it feels uncomfortable to suddenly change to 100 per cent alternative fuel, but that should not be the reason not to do it. We have been supplying the same HVO fuel to the same type of engines for five years already, without any issues; it’s better than the conventional diesel you buy. For our latest Entrepreneur in Yachting feature, Francesca Webster sits down with her friend Mariangela Oliveri to discuss her luxury linens business <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. Established in 2011, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> has evolved into one of the premier sustainable linen companies for the yachting and aviation sectors over the past decade. We explored its inception, the challenges Mariangela faced in establishing a sustainable business before sustainability became a trend, and her conviction that quality and service are the keys to success in the superyacht industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331994/image/large-c16f54ec63cb14a14d02590c1d28c25c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331994">What was the origin of the business and what is your background?&nbsp;Throughout my business degree my goal was to set up a company within the realm of luxury materials so I approached every class during my five year degree as an opportunity to develop the business plan. In fact, the original concept for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> was the final essay at university, so although the company was founded in 2011, it had really been with me for years before then.&nbsp;After university, I decided that before establishing my own business, I needed to learn how to work within a team and to grow in practical experience. It felt presumptuous to assume I had all the answers without appropriate training, so I joined a company in Asia for five years importing luxury furniture design manufacturers. During that time I learnt how to work with different people, from various backgrounds and cultures and it taught me the skills that you need in order to manage your own team and your own clients. It was an incredible learning experience and gave me the opportunity to work in a varied and complex environment, and after five years I returned to Italy and began the research process for the business. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331999/image/large-21757ca123fc9e37a78d60e699868147.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331999">Why did you decide to focus on high-end, sustainable linens?&nbsp;I’ve always had a deep passion for quality and for me Italian linen is the supreme material with an amazing heritage, however the sustainable approach was not in my original concept. I wanted to offer the lineage of linen with a modern twist, but I didn't yet know what that twist was. I am an observer by nature and when I returned from Asia in 2011 sustainability was beginning to become mainstream, with eco foods in supermarkets for example and the demand was increasing . Sustainability was also becoming a buzz word in the media and I could see that it would only increase in significance, so I decided that founding the business with a truly green heart would set <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> apart from the rest of the market. That is when the struggle really started.At that time it was impossible to find refined sustainable fabrics. Everything on the market was rough and completely unsuitable to luxury linen products. That was a period of frustration and of almost giving up because once I'd set my heart on the sustainable element of the business there was no way that I was going back. It became absolutely central to my belief in the company.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331998/image/large-5f21af1057a168c58caf722e89ffeb08.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331998">How did you overcome that hurdle?I met with the owner of Italy’s largest fabric producer, and after an eight hour meeting managed to convince him to invest in a certified sustainable production line. He said, “If I can't convince you to change your mind about this approach in eight hours, you must be able to see something I haven't seen yet, so we will try it.” That was an amazing moment. Two years later, he had certified the entire production line of the company and had become one of the first sustainable fabric suppliers in Italy.&nbsp;So your investment in creating the business sustainably delayed the foundation of the company – why did it become so important to you?The answer is twofold. The first is ethical, but the second was strategic. I could foresee that sustainability would become an important factor of businesses in the future and fortunately reality has shown that my instinct was right. The decision to create a certified business from the ground up also means that everything we do is done in a sustainable way – our materials, work standards and business practices are routinely reviewed to ensure that we are maintaining the certified standards. When I see companies today launching ‘sustainable lines’ I know that it is greenwashing. You cannot be sustainable in one collection, it is a hypocrisy, either you believe in it and practise it throughout your business, or it is a gimmick to sell your products.&nbsp;What are some of the challenges you’ve faced since establishing the business?Well, aside from the initial challenge of finding the suppliers, we have faced many challenges in the past 13 years. Our first line was a kids bed linens collection because I thought mothers would be sensitive to the sustainability aspect, but it really didn't go as expected. I invested a lot of money and almost went broke. I realised that the market wasn’t ready for the sustainable topic to be the main focus of the business, so I developed the business model focusing on the concept of Italian quality, with an international service approach.&nbsp;Italian’s make wonderful products, and Made in Italy still carries a lot of weight internationally, but Italian companies are not good at marketing, customer service etc. So I decided to focus a lot of investment in our service offering, utilising my international experience to create something different and that is how <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> came to the yachting industry, where quality and service are most recognised.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332000/image/large-90fdc1caae0a58aa21af956ebab21436.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332000">When did yachting linens become the focus of the business?In about 2013 we decided to approach the yachting sector, making our first sales in 2014 and pulling the company out of some challenging financial times. Then things progressed quickly because we secured <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut-Benetti</a> as one of our first clients. In fact when I went to Benetti to pitch our business, they had an array of linen suppliers on show, but by the end of our meeting we had secured our position as the exclusive supplier for the shipyard and that really established our relationship with the yachting sector.&nbsp;What do you think they saw in your products? What set&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>&nbsp;apart?The quality of every single detail. Every piece that carries our label is checked by hand right down to the stitching because I want my team to be proud of every piece. We will take as long as it takes for it to be perfect and I think that sets us apart from other companies. I have a huge amount of respect for Hermes, which I believe is the only true example of true luxury brand. They continue to make their bags by hand, they aren’t interested in speed or numbers, they are focused on quality and that is my focus for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/331993/image/large-f12efeba8de238fae187efa8cfdede06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/331993">How have you maintained that level of control and what do you think are some of your keys to success?With a lot of saying no. The success of a brand is more in the no’s than the yes’s. We’ve been approached by retailers offering display space, but you will never find <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7884" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oliveri Linens (Company)">Oliveri</a> products on the shelf, we’ve also been approached to create products for under famous brands. Our know-how is precious to me and we will never supply our products under someone else’s label.The company is also completely self financed, so there are no investors telling me to cut budgets and increase production at the sacrifice of quality. I will make no compromises and that is really important to who we are. I also think that the most important thing when you’re an entrepreneur is that you involve everyone in your dream. From your suppliers, to your employees, you have to make them believe and in order to do that, you have to truly believe in yourself and in what you're doing. Mariangela Oliveri on sustainable linens, building a business and the meaning of luxury

The superyacht industry is often portrayed by mainstream media as slow to innovate or adapt to environmental challenges. However, this perspective overlooks numerous initiatives and organisations at various levels, from international to local, that actively facilitate a more sustainable approach among all stakeholders within the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/237001/image/large-34661eb661037cedcc9fa816ea2839c9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/237001">Stakeholders in the superyacht industry have been actively involved in promoting and implementing sustainability projects through regulatory compliance across various aspects, from cruising operations to construction infrastructure and supply chains. The following sections detail the leading organisations such as the Sea Index, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a> and YETI and their projects, highlighting their active role in promoting a sustainable future.International Maritime OrganisationIn 2016, the United Nations' International Maritime Organisation (IMO) implemented Tier III of the IMO NOx regulations, aimed at significantly reducing nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) from vessels. These stringent regulations call for a reduction of approximately 70 percent in NOx emissions compared to the Tier II standards, marking a substantial step towards environmental stewardship.For the superyacht sector, the implications of these regulations are profound. Starting from 1 January 2016, every large yacht exceeding 500 gross tonnes and equipped with diesel engines over 130 kW has been required to comply with these rigorous standards. In 2021, the scope of these regulations broadened further, encompassing yachts under 500 gross tonnes but over 24-metres in length overall (LOA). This expansion ensures a wider application of the environmental standards, pushing the superyacht industry towards broader compliance and enhanced sustainability efforts.Superyacht Eco Association IndexIn 2020, Credit Suisse and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4337" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Club de Monaco (Company)">Yacht Club de Monaco</a> introduced a significant innovation with the launch of the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) Index. Developed in partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug</a>, the SEA Index is designed to measure and rate the environmental impact of superyachts, spanning areas such as propulsion systems, energy recovery, and waste management. This initiative marks a pivotal step toward transparency and accountability in the industry, providing a robust tool for assessing air pollution emitted by these luxury vessels. The Index aspires to evolve into a globally recognized standard, offering ecological ratings that could inspire a broader commitment to sustainability across the industry.The SEA Index operates as an online, customisable tool that allows yacht owners and industry stakeholders to perform 'no obligation' self-assessments of their emissions. If these assessments meet the SEA Index's stringent criteria, owners can then opt for an official audit to obtain a SEA Flag and an SEA rating. Such features underscore the Index's role not only as a benchmarking tool but also as a catalyst for change, pushing for lower emissions and cleaner operations. The initial launch was met with enthusiasm, as it provided yacht owners with a clear insight into the environmental efficiency of their vessels, evaluated on a 0-5 scale. This transparency is crucial in an industry often scrutinised for its environmental footprint.Recognising the need for wider applicability and greater inclusivity, the SEA Index expanded its scope in subsequent phases. The second phase saw a collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a> to incorporate more propulsion systems and alternative fuels, broadening the assessment criteria to accommodate a greater variety of yachting operations. The third phase further advanced the project by including smaller yachts, specifically those below 400 Gross Tonnage and over 25 metres in length, thereby covering a larger segment of the industry.Most recently, in 2024, the SEA Index expanded its reach to marina operations. It has been deployed in 15 marinas located in strategic yachting hubs like Menton, Saint-Tropez, and Bonifacio in Corsica. This move not only amplifies the Index's impact but also aligns with broader environmental goals, helping marina operators and yacht owners alike to gauge and subsequently reduce their carbon emissions. As the SEA Index continues to set new standards for sustainability, it offers a promising path forward for the yachting industry, one that aligns luxury with environmental responsibility.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/119359/image/large-1fae816de8b77f36e3d1ab53bc6299b0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/119359"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>&nbsp;and Yacht Environmental Transparency IndexAnother organisation at the forefront of promoting environmentally sustainable practices within the industry is the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a>. Established at The Superyacht Forum in 2018 by a group of industry leaders, the Foundation aims to foster collaborative efforts among stakeholders to enhance sustainability in the industry.The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5877" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Water Revolution Foundation (Company)">Water Revolution Foundation</a> adopts a constructive and collaborative approach, aligning with international scientific and institutional agendas. It equips the superyacht industry with essential tools, knowledge, and best practices. It is produced from food industry waste and left overs and, is 100 percent renewable and traceable from well to wake. “With such a significant reduction in harmful emissions, &nbsp;it also means that engine components, such as filters and injectors, stay cleaner and require less maintenance.”“As a team, we wanted to go beyond just scratching the surface. Collaboration, dialogue, and, most importantly, action is what is required today. The question at hand? “How the yachting industry is addressing the sustainability challenge with top talent.”This report focuses on the social pillar of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policy, whilst <a href="https://mb92.com/sustainability" target="_blank">past reports</a> have touched upon the need for increased regulations, upcoming innovations to reduce ecological footprint and advances in new technologies.The fourth report focuses on the social pillar of ESG, underscoring it as an indispensable engine for the industry’s transition yet it is also revealed that it maintains high levels of inertia in this area.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> analysed the sector’s social challenges, outlining recent progress, and identifying key focus areas, driving factors, and obstacles to adopting sustainable practices. This means that the amount of CO2 released into the air in the combustion process is equivalent to the amount removed from the environment to produce green methanol, allowing for a circular and completely carbon neutral system. Rather than the traditional layout of two technical levels, there is a move to a horizontal development of the propulsion equipment and a new distribution of the technical area on the under lower technical deck, freeing up the lower deck for guest and crew areas.&nbsp;In this modified layout, an additional saloon has been created on the lower deck, where the engines would normally sit, coined the Ocean Lounge which is directly connected to the beach club with its swimming pool and extensive seating area. On the other side, the guest staterooms are connected to the gym and spa areas, offering a new level of connectivity on the lower deck. The stairs, which have been designed to let the light filter through with glass sides, run through the interior of the yacht, connecting the different areas, from the gym and spa area on the lower deck to the second salon on the upper deck. It’s not every day that one has the opportunity to visit shipyards in the Far East, especially in China. In June, the inaugural SuperYacht Times <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/events/asia-pacific-summit-2024-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Summit</a> in Hong Kong provided a perfect occasion to explore regional shipyards and marinas. Recently, the Asia-Pacific region has been increasing its share in the construction of yachts over 30-metres in length.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332002/image/large-fea235340d9ae4c2209734e97934a880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332002">During the summit, SuperYacht Times' Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert, presented the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Market Report 2024</a>, which outlined this trend. According to the report, as of the beginning of 2024, builders from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 509 out of the 5,787 operating yachts over 30-metres worldwide, representing a share of 8.8%. This positions the region as the third-largest superyacht construction area globally, following Europe (including Turkey) and North America. Moreover, over the past decade, the share of builders from the Asia-Pacific region has increased to 9.9%, with these builders delivering 159 out of the 1,604 yachts completed between 2014 and 2023. However, the yard's expertise extends beyond fibreglass; it also works extensively with steel and aluminium. Among the well-known superyachts constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> are the 46-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avalon46.0m (150'11&quot;)Cheoy Lee2011">Avalon</a> and the 45-metre explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limited Risks45.0m (147'8&quot;)Cheoy Lee2007">Limited Risks</a> (formerly Marco Polo).Upon our arrival at the shipyard, we were warmly greeted by Martin Lo, the Director, and his nephew, Hans Lo, the Deputy Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>. Hans represents the fifth generation of his family to work at the company. They escorted us to the main meeting room, where Martin shared his background in yachting. Born into a shipbuilding family, his career path seemed a natural progression. He emphasised the importance of a family-run shipyard to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s identity. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247078/image/large-b55615fc33411404935e67ddb8b13459.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247078">In late 2018, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> underwent a strategic restructuring. The company's luxury production arm was rebranded as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6398" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CL Yachts (Company)">CL Yachts</a>, while larger custom builds continued under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> brand. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> shipyards are focused on the production of commercial vessels, including offshore supply vessels, tugs, and ferries.Regarding the production ratio between commercial and pleasure yachts, Lo stated that at present it stands at 85% commercial projects and 15% pleasure craft. As for the yachts currently under construction, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has two explorer motor yachts in the pipeline: the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer</a> and the 32.76-metre Cheoy Lee 107. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332003/image/large-040340f503dfd284944242680f218609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332003">Lo then explained that the city of Zhuhai and the surrounding area has developed into a hub for the production and refit of commercial vessels. Additionally, he mentioned that some local shipyards have recently started to venture into yacht construction.When asked about the state of the domestic yacht market, Lo explained that the majority of yachts built in China are intended for international markets. He specified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s primary clientele has traditionally been in North America, with additional clients in Europe. In 2022, the company broadened its international footprint by appointing a dealer in Australasia, SE Asia, Hong Kong and Middle East. .<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/182372/image/large-00a4e228745d20b66ec42741673de3d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/182372">As we commenced the tour of the facilities, we viewed several commercial projects along with the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130</a>, currently under construction for a returning client. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and features exterior design and naval architecture by Overing Yacht Designs, while her interior was penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia Bolton Design, Inc. (Company)">Sylvia Bolton Design</a>.&nbsp;During our tour onboard, it was evident to see Lo’s passion for yacht building and emphasis on quality. He shared that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> had formed a partnership with Genesis, an Italian furniture company based in Tuscany, to supply parts for the yacht interiors.
