Less often examined, however, is how a builder sustains consistency as projects become increasingly complex.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388534/image/large-b2ccd786974c3724c2d70de3539dc839.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388534">To understand this requires looking beyond the finished yacht and into the internal structures that support it. Over that time, formal project management frameworks were introduced, transparency increased and facilities expanded. Alongside these visible changes, however, one principle has remained constant.“<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> has always been, first and foremost, a human company,” says Paris. “From the very beginning, our success has come from our people, who care deeply about their work, take ownership of what they do and understand that extraordinary yachts are created through teamwork and shared ambition.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/378677/image/large-95b260286ebcb39540f638f7f82168a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/378677">To reinforce this culture, leadership structures have evolved to become less performative and more functional. Hierarchy still exists, but its role is supportive rather than directive. In practice, this means decision-making sits close to the point of execution, with input valued regardless of job title.“Each project team works physically alongside the yacht during the build, moving with the project between our facilities in Zwijndrecht and Alblasserdam and operating from an open workspace directly next to the yacht, where the owner’s team and key subcontractors also work side by side,” explains Paris. “If something changes on board, the relevant people can quickly review the situation together and agree on the next step without unnecessary layers of hierarchy or administration.”This approach runs counter to a common instinct within high-risk, high-value construction environments, where control is often centralised as complexity increases. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s model distributes responsibility instead, relying on clearly defined roles and mutual trust to manage risk.Motivation and recognition also play an important role. When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DreAMBoat111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">DreAMBoat</a> was delivered, the celebration again included those who helped build her, allowing everyone to share in the pride of the finished yacht. Key subcontractors are described internally as ‘Co-makers’, reflecting long-term partnerships built on trust and transparency. These relationships can have a direct impact on project outcomes, particularly when it comes to capacity planning.A recent example came during the builds of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="DreAMBoat111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">DreAMBoat</a>, which were delivered just two weeks apart. “Delivering two complex projects so close together creates significant pressure across <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> and for our Co-makers,” says Edske Smit Project Director “But because we had already been discussing capacity and potential risks several years in advance, we were able to plan and adapt together. By looking at both projects from a broader <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> perspective rather than only individual contracts, teams could shift people and resources where they were needed most.”&nbsp;Transparency therefore becomes an operational necessity. Problems are surfaced early, with the expectation that accountability and learning follow disclosure rather than blame. This approach becomes particularly crucial when projects come under commercial or schedule pressure.“Because many of our Co-makers are long-term partners, there is already a strong level of trust that allows us to act quickly and solve challenges together,” Edske Smit adds. “We communicate clearly about the targets we need to meet and the risks we are prepared to accept, so expectations remain aligned. That openness helps us navigate pressure constructively and continue building trust over time.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388643/image/large-8ea500b0c047de9da42f5c995df3563b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388643">Progress driven by collaborationInnovation follows a similarly collaborative logic. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> encourages Co-makers and suppliers to view themselves not simply as contractors but as partners in developing new ideas. The challenge, however, is less about generating ideas and more about ensuring they gain traction within the realities of a live project environment.“Innovation is always developed collaboratively with our Co-makers and suppliers,” says Edske Smit. “When new ideas emerge, the first question is whether there is a suitable project where they can be tested or implemented, and then whether they align with our broader strategy.”Because innovation inevitably brings a degree of risk, it is always discussed closely with the owner’s team. “We are lucky that many of our owners are enthusiastic about exploring new solutions,” Edske Smit adds. “The key is finding the right balance between strategic direction, project timing and the willingness to pilot new ideas.”Smaller innovations are often evaluated directly within project teams. One example is the compound used for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a> synthetic deck on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Leviathan111.0m (364'2&quot;)Oceanco2025">Leviathan</a>, developed collaboratively between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>, the crew and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7672" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bolidt (Company)">Bolidt</a>. “One of the known challenges with synthetic decking is heat retention,” says Paris. “By adjusting both the colour and the compound, we were able to significantly improve heat dissipation.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/388530/image/large-ed1d71e71ba1e6a59cad7fd831529575.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/388530">Larger developments involve the wider development team and, at times, the board. Take <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s Life Cycle Assessment tool, for instance, which gained traction during the development of DreAMBoat when the owner offered support in exploring ways to improve the design and build process for future projects. The result was a collaboration with an independent engineering expert to co-develop a tool capable of measuring a yacht’s carbon footprint in far greater detail than previously possible. The tool is now used during the design stage of all <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> projects, giving clients clearer insight into how design and material choices influence energy use and environmental impact.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/73482/image/large-272c9906641d609027608ac76389fb19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/73482">An invisible frameworkWhat is notable is how understated much of this remains. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a>’s culture is not heavily branded or overtly publicised. Instead, it manifests through repeated behaviours – how meetings are structured, how disagreement is handled and how pressure is absorbed during critical project phases. (Company)">Codecasa</a>, one of the oldest family-operated shipyards in Italy. Established in 1825 by Giovanni Battista Codecasa in Viareggio, the shipyard specialises in crafting steel and aluminium yachts ranging from 24 to 70-metres. Notable examples of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. "Our yachts are built according to the client’s wishes, just like a bespoke tailored suit. This approach allows us to closely monitor every step of the construction process, ensuring that the yachts we deliver are not only beautiful but also unique, reliable, safe, and of the highest quality."Additionally, Fulvio highlighted that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> facilities. Inquiring into the significance of these names and the overall construction capacity, Fulvio pointed out that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Tre and Ugo <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Shipyards, strategically located at the Viareggio dock, each cover an area of 7,000 square metres, 6,000 of which are permanently under cover. These facilities specialise in constructing yachts ranging from 40 to 90-metres in length, crafted from steel and aluminium. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> DR11 production site, also in Viareggio, near the Ugo <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Tre shipyards, spans 1,023 square metres, 745 of which are covered, and is dedicated to building yachts from 35 to 40-metres in length.Notably, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">CodecasaDue</a> Shipyard, located in the historic Darsena on one of Viareggio port’s oldest quays, stands out. It designs and builds motor yachts in steel and aluminium, up to 35-metres long. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for refit operations on all types of vessels, it features a travel lift capable of hauling and launching vessels up to 220 tonnes, and provides comprehensive services for the secure storage of yachts up to 30-metres in its outdoor or covered areas within the shipyard.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/341071/image/large-bd31d479d00c149b21de5f16dfb76edb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/341071">Finally, moving to Pisa’s Navicelli Dock, the group's most recent production site sprawls over 25,000 square metres, with 10,000 square metres covered and includes four identical sheds of 2,500 square metres each. This modern facility is designed to accommodate hulls and superstructures up to 80-metres long from the initial stages of construction.Looking ahead, Fulvio revealed that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> is actively expanding its fleet with the construction of three yachts: a 33.5-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> Classic Yacht scheduled for delivery in 2025; the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> F81, a 57-metre yacht also set for delivery in 2025; and the 58-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/162" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Codecasa S.p.A. (Company)">Codecasa</a> C128, with delivery planned for 2026.

It’s not every day that one has the opportunity to visit shipyards in the Far East, especially in China. In June, the inaugural SuperYacht Times <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/events/asia-pacific-summit-2024-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Summit</a> in Hong Kong provided a perfect occasion to explore regional shipyards and marinas. Recently, the Asia-Pacific region has been increasing its share in the construction of yachts over 30-metres in length.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332002/image/large-fea235340d9ae4c2209734e97934a880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332002">During the summit, SuperYacht Times' Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert, presented the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Market Report 2024</a>, which outlined this trend. According to the report, as of the beginning of 2024, builders from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 509 out of the 5,787 operating yachts over 30-metres worldwide, representing a share of 8.8%. This positions the region as the third-largest superyacht construction area globally, following Europe (including Turkey) and North America. Moreover, over the past decade, the share of builders from the Asia-Pacific region has increased to 9.9%, with these builders delivering 159 out of the 1,604 yachts completed between 2014 and 2023. As a result, the region now ranks second after Europe, as the influence of North America has declined.SuperYacht Times Features writer Enrico Chhibber recently visited <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> at their facilities in Zhuhai, China, just before the commencement of the Summit. After a pick up in Hong Kong, Enrico met with Fiona Li, the head of marketing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>, and was driven across the border towards Zhuhai.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332001/image/large-5cd01e6d8d238d387a69cdc8691186e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332001">Cheoy Lee</a> is one of the oldest family-run shipyards in the Asia-Pacific region, with a storied history. Originally founded in 1870 by the Lo family in China, the company relocated to Hong Kong in the 1930s. While the company maintains its head office and a small repair yard in Kowloon, Hong Kong, it relocated its construction facilities from Penny’s Bay to Zhuhai, China, in 1996. Since then, the Penny’s Bay site has been transformed into what is now Hong Kong's Disneyland.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220646/image/large-5477a925a390ad705be09ae7d33a0b6e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220646"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has constructed numerous innovative yachts and was one of the first shipyards in the region to use fibreglass, notably on the 39.78-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3836" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nataly39.78m (130'6&quot;)Cheoy Lee1978">Nataly</a> (formerly Shango II), which was the largest fibreglass yacht ever built at the time of her construction in 1978. However, the yard's expertise extends beyond fibreglass; it also works extensively with steel and aluminium. Among the well-known superyachts constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> are the 46-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avalon46.0m (150'11&quot;)Cheoy Lee2011">Avalon</a> and the 45-metre explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limited Risks45.0m (147'8&quot;)Cheoy Lee2007">Limited Risks</a> (formerly Marco Polo).Upon our arrival at the shipyard, we were warmly greeted by Martin Lo, the Director, and his nephew, Hans Lo, the Deputy Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>. Hans represents the fifth generation of his family to work at the company. They escorted us to the main meeting room, where Martin shared his background in yachting. Born into a shipbuilding family, his career path seemed a natural progression. He emphasised the importance of a family-run shipyard to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s identity. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247078/image/large-b55615fc33411404935e67ddb8b13459.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247078">In late 2018, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> underwent a strategic restructuring. The company's luxury production arm was rebranded as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6398" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CL Yachts (Company)">CL Yachts</a>, while larger custom builds continued under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> brand. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> shipyards are focused on the production of commercial vessels, including offshore supply vessels, tugs, and ferries.Regarding the production ratio between commercial and pleasure yachts, Lo stated that at present it stands at 85% commercial projects and 15% pleasure craft. As for the yachts currently under construction, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has two explorer motor yachts in the pipeline: the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer</a> and the 32.76-metre Cheoy Lee 107. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332003/image/large-040340f503dfd284944242680f218609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332003">Lo then explained that the city of Zhuhai and the surrounding area has developed into a hub for the production and refit of commercial vessels. Additionally, he mentioned that some local shipyards have recently started to venture into yacht construction.When asked about the state of the domestic yacht market, Lo explained that the majority of yachts built in China are intended for international markets. He specified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s primary clientele has traditionally been in North America, with additional clients in Europe. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and features exterior design and naval architecture by Overing Yacht Designs, while her interior was penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia Bolton Design, Inc. For owner Paul Andrews, the search for the right yacht was a journey that spanned more than a decade. However, when he first came across the 25.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmer Johnson Yachts (Company)">Palmer Johnson</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> online, something about her caught his attention. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394762/image/large-d54e9461baa90d5794ad964df495e456.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394762">“I first saw her in a video while I was searching for yachts,” he explained. “She was located in Thailand at the time, which was quite literally on the other side of the world from me, but her presence immediately stood out.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394534/image/large-bfddc47ecaf6a83efc8300953b5b19d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394534">Originally launched in 1967, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> was the largest aluminium hulled sailing yacht in the world when she first hit the water. Built as a classic world cruising yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> had circumnavigated the world three times, with voyages to the Antarctic and Arctic regions when she entered the market in 2022. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394541/image/large-c96b4ebc0ab5a9453459421e627799d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394541">“The beam, the proportions and the sheer character of the yacht caught my attention straight away,” recalled Andrews. “I wasn’t specifically searching for a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmer Johnson Yachts (Company)">Palmer Johnson</a>, but when she was built, she was engineered to a commercial, almost military-grade standard and built to navy specs, which gave her a genuine pedigree, strength and a fascinating story behind her.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394543/image/large-0b87ef55ef9559c3dc95e76eca2db6c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394543">However, when Andrews finally travelled to Thailand to inspect the yacht in person, the initial impression was far from ideal. “It was raining heavily and she looked tired and neglected.” But returning the following day to see the yacht in clear conditions revealed a completely different vessel. “Her lines were beautiful and the potential became obvious. She simply needed vision and attention.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394544/image/large-f191bd60c4deb3732c009830efb76fc3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394544">In 2015 under the ownership of her previous owners, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> had started a refit programme spanning more than $1 million, which lasted five years and saw her receive a full teak interior refit. “It was clear that previous owners had already invested heavily in the yacht,” added Andrews. “The teak interior joinery was exceptional and the hull structure was sound. However, the layout did not fully make use of the yacht’s size.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394540/image/large-3bd64f4dfb231598384875f28fc57a05.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394540">With the help of Martin Holmes and his team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lee Marine International Brokerage (Company)">Lee Marine</a>, Andrews took a boat from Langkawi, Malaysia where he purchased <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> and started the process of refitting her in Phuket. “My vision was always to maximise the yacht without taking away the character that makes Firebird special,” he explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394689/image/large-066bcffa01ddea4816fadbefefba6fb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394689">“Rather than remove that character, the refit focused on respecting the craftsmanship already onboard, while improving the functionality and layout for modern cruising. So the very first thing I wanted to do was lay a completely new teak deck.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394684/image/large-59c92dfa1c2c4dfaf499558c82520e13.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394684">The refit saw beautifully laid teak installed throughout, which instantly transformed her appearance and the feeling underfoot. From here, Andrews had a large swim platform and gangway at the stern installed for easy access, as well as an alfresco dining area for 12, with a large three-metre teak L-shaped sofa added and a circular seating area for eight at her stern.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394683/image/large-ccd9dbe381bbc98da19e89f67500eafb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394683">Additional work saw her saloon and guest staterooms reworked to create a larger and more comfortable interior, while technical works included the installation of a new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Raymarine UK Ltd (Company)">Raymarine</a> navigation suite, electric furling systems and the recommissioning of her <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1497" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Detroit Diesel (Company)">Detroit Diesel</a> engine and generators.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394537/image/large-a9744df0db0cb9126710320c8ad8f685.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394537">&nbsp;“I was involved in every stage of the project!” beamed Andrews. “Working alongside skilled craftsmen in Thailand allowed the ideas I had for the yacht to be executed properly.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394682/image/large-6c7c43f1ab3dc6151b36ef4b9e0c6d90.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394682">“The region has an impressive concentration of marine specialists including riggers, carpenters, sailmakers and marine engineers. The quality of teak craftsmanship in Thailand is also exceptional and the cost of skilled labour is significantly lower than in many other parts of the world. By chance I also discovered a local boat carpenter whose family had been building boats in the region for generations. His team worked tirelessly and played a crucial role in transforming the yacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394536/image/large-a684c5dbb17405c08f59b474c49fe63e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394536">A large portion of the refit work was carried out at Premier Superyacht Shipyard near <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yacht Haven Marina (Company)">Yacht Haven Marina</a> in Phuket. The yard operates an 890-tonne travel lift and regularly handles vessels significantly larger than <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a>, so during her haul-out, hull works, repainting, mechanical servicing and installation of the bow thruster were completed at the yard. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394535/image/large-fe228dc87c3eb4c006007450d0644190.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394535">The refit started almost immediately after Andrews had stepped onboard and he remained involved throughout the process. “After studying the layout of an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1097" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oyster Yachts (Company)">Oyster</a> 85, I realised it might be possible to alter the companionway arrangement and open access to unused space within the yacht. By cutting through the bulkhead at the end of the galley we created a new passageway that allowed an entirely new guest stateroom to be built.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394687/image/large-2e193db0a4b19958ca9e5ecb0fbbb3b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394687">The result allowed for unused areas to be converted into additional guest accommodation, while maintaining the logical flow through her companionway and saloon areas. Thanks to this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is now able to comfortably accommodate up to 13 guests, while still feeling spacious. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394691/image/large-d359643ead180961dcf469e992df6a3a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394691">“The onboard experience is exceptional now! <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is incredibly comfortable and she has become a wonderful place to spend time. I have several comfortable homes on land, but I genuinely did not expect living aboard a yacht to feel this enjoyable.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394775/image/large-19d12ff20ebf8798893858104887e523.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394775">From a technical standpoint the most important upgrade was the installation of a Max Power bow thruster. At 71 tonnes, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12413" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Firebird25.6m (83'12&quot;)Palmer Johnson Yachts1967">Firebird</a> is not a small yacht and the thruster significantly improved manoeuvrability for docking.
