Since opening its doors to superyachts in 2022, the Montenegrin refit facility <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> has gone from strength to strength, quickly earning a reputation as a gold standard refit facility in the region. This winter, the shipyard has its busiest season yet, completing 26 refit projects ranging from major refits, to in-water maintenance and it is already receiving a myriad of requests for the upcoming 2024/25 winter season. We recently sat down with Mr. Zoran Stanjevic, Director of Operations and Executive Director, to find out a bit more about the capabilities of the shipyard and its plans for the coming refit season. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/323248/image/large-8674781d282e47b57f23556d9980b65f.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/323248">The FacilitiesDespite the rich history of its location, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> set to work with its sights firmly focused in the future. The superyacht service facility is led by international professionals in close collaboration with the local workforce, giving bulletproof service based on its trained team's years of experience. Local craftsmen are particularly renowned for their expertise in both woodwork and steel, and last season saw a number of complex projects coming to completion, such as the rebuild of the classic motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1737" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kalizma50.29m (164'12&quot;)Ramage & Ferguson1906">Kalizma</a>.&nbsp;The yard provides top-notch equipment and materials, ensuring that the superyacht service facility is always stocked with the highest quality product. Additionally, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> has an extensive network of European suppliers, allowing them to offer a wide range of options and solutions to meet the unique needs and preferences of each client. Over the course of the past two years the company has expanded its onsite offering, with a 180 x 34-metre floating dock able to accommodate the largest superyachts in the global fleet, or two superyachts for in water maintenance side by side.&nbsp;The facility is already home to a 720 tonne travel hoist, 8,000 square-metres of warehouses and workshops and 30,000 square metres of hard standing. This season, a company also acquired a new 350 tonne boat trailer lift, enabling them to move more vessels onto the hard standing area. “We can currently accept 16 yachts on the hard but by the upcoming season will be able to accommodate 22 as we are expanding our capacity”, explains Zoran. “The aim is not to overcrowd the yard, but to ensure that each project can be stored in its own scaffolding structure and wrap, with a good amount of space between projects to ensure the safety of all yachts and workers at the facility. We have a major focus on safety and regulations and have been working closely with both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a> and the class societies to ensure that all of our projects are entirely compliant,” he adds. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/267271/image/large-8cee98b562e723533e15d276570e6783.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/267271">Season Success StoriesThe 2023/24 season was a great success story for the shipyard, completing all of its 26 projects on time and to specification. “Among our recent projects, we are proud to count notable vessels such as the 43.3-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1666" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ice Lady43.3m (142'1&quot;)Helsingfors1959">Ice Lady</a>, the 49.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5918" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endeavour 249.9m (163'9&quot;)Rossinavi2017">Endeavour 2</a>, and the 38.6-metre Jetsetter, all of which have chosen our yard for their needs once again.”&nbsp;In addition to these confirmed return projects, the yard also completed the refit of the world renowned 106.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/64" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Oceanco (Company)">Oceanco</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a>, which has been a regular visitor to the yard since 2022. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4795" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Black Pearl106.7m (350'1&quot;)Oceanco2018">Black Pearl</a> was the first yacht to have been refitted at the yard and demonstrates the team’s capabilities in working on complex systems, with the superyacht well known for its technological innovations.&nbsp;Another example is the four month refit recently completed aboard the 50.29-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1737" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kalizma50.29m (164'12&quot;)Ramage & Ferguson1906">Kalizma</a>. The 118-year-old motor yacht came to the yard for a maintenance upgrade and had her three main engines and two diesel generators completely overhauled, with the team facing the challenge of limited space onboard. The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> team also repaired her steering system and rudder shaft, in addition to a number of other maintenance jobs, which were made more complex by the age of the vessel.&nbsp;Finally, the yard is particularly proud of the refit of the racing trimaran Paradox 3. The yacht’s unique design and shape makes the task of lifting her from the water safely, and preparing it for service challenging. However, with the precise manoeuvring of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> experts and working closely with the boat captain this project was successfully completed once again. After the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6770" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adriatic 42 (Company)">Adriatic 42</a> team performed highly precise work on Paradox3’s new rigging parts this beautiful trimaran was ready to set sail again, onwards to new races and new victories. How do you future-proof an AV/IT system?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond Technology Management</a> has a fundamentally different perspective than an integrator, as our position working directly for yacht owners means we can drive the specification to ensure systems are future proof. Integrators must bid on specifications, we write them.On a more specific level, we’re always looking 10 and 15 years ahead to make sure the systems we design are future proof, with many completed vessels being the living historical proof that we have been doing it right. Our job often means helping customers to avoid being penny wise and pound foolish when it comes to infrastructure planning. Additionally, we are encouraging yacht owners to simplify and streamline their systems so that long-term maintenance and operational costs are reduced. Starlink was the lynchpin we were waiting for to fundamentally re-invent the onboard AV/IT systems we tailor to owner needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322599/image/large-a561ce10bcb309cc0cab486ec60e95a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322599">AV/IT systems are complex and costly. What is your advice for project managers or owners' reps tasked with choosing an integrator and speccing a system?&nbsp;We respectfully challenge the assumption that AV/IT systems must be complex and costly. &nbsp;There is a clear trend towards simplification which we at bond are leaning into, and it is possible today to simultaneously shrink systems and future proof them. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Returning to the question, one should first make sure a good team is creating the system specification packages. If you are considering bringing expert consultants onto your team like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond TM</a>, then scratch the surface to ensure their merit and avoid cronyism. It takes time to build a good specification, and cutting corners at early stages can be costly in the end.Next, there has been a downsizing trend in the last decade which has allowed us to return space back to the interior, but it relies on good communications with the owner in terms they can relate to. If you ask an integrator or anyone really who doesn’t know the client, you will get over-spec’d systems containing everything plus the kitchen sink. However the systems we’ve been working with our customers to specify are smaller, cooler and more capable than those of the past, because customers today are rejecting a lot of the complexity which in the past was under-utilised or never used at all. &nbsp;Armed with a solid specification, one can then of course go to tender. If done right, you will get good apples to apples offers, and you can select your suppliers based on price and compliance to specification.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322598/image/large-1cc1724a3788481a08127e53899b4a72.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322598">Some superyachts now have a full-time ETO (Electro Technical Officer) on board. Generally speaking, is there sufficient training for crew to run and maintain the AV/IT systems properly? A well trained and knowledgeable crew will always make the guest experience onboard better, zero doubt. For over a decade, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> has offered a variety of technical and cyber training courses to help crew enhance the skill set they bring onboard.Furthermore, our push to simplify and streamline the AV/IT systems means that these systems simply cause fewer headaches for the crew to begin with. The interesting caveat however is IT system administration. Switches and Wi-Fi over the next decades will always be required, as will the need for IT specialists who are experts in keeping the network secure and performant.Our Support Services group has been delivering expert technical assistance to crew for over 15 years, exactly to reinforce the crew and ensure they have access to all skills necessary to keep their yacht running smoothly.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/322165/image/large-9baeaf85af25d3b0b9d19bf5328f94bf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/322165"> In an increasingly connected environment, how important is it to have a cybersecurity management plan when designing an onboard IT system?A Cyber Security Management Plan is a vital operational matter that crew must attend to; it is not a tangible thing one can design into a system or pay cash up front for. If experts have designed the IT system to adequate standards using sound best practices while not cutting important corners, then it will be possible to operate it safely and securely. However a system packed with the most exotic security technologies in the world will amount to nothing if it gets hacked due to being operated and maintained incorrectly, or because the crew was not trained adequately to understand and avoid cyber threats.If the worst does come to pass and there is a cyber incident onboard, the crew need to have a good plan they can follow to ensure they immediately do the right things to mitigate harm and/or loss, while quickly bringing the vessel back to a secure state. This is what good cyber policies and plans can do.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> serves the Cyber needs of yachts at every level. Our build management group ensures systems are designed and delivered to robust standards. &nbsp;Our service and support group maintains those systems at a secure state and helps crew to craft world class cyber policies that are well tailored to their needs. Lastly, our training team routinely conducts Cyber Awareness courses for entire crews to help everyone level up their operational security. Daily vigilance is needed in the face of the threats out there, and a well-prepared crew is the first and best line of defense. Fast connectivity at sea can be elusive. Are 5G, Starlink and other low earth orbit satellites taking over from traditional VSAT technology?This is not elusive any more since virtually every yacht on the sea has already installed Starlink. This constellation of satellites has fundamentally changed everything. Since 2014 when Greg Wyler and Elon Musk first started planning a Low Earth Orbit constellation called WorldVu, and when O3B went online, we have been preparing our customers to be ready for low and medium earth orbit systems. &nbsp;We are therefore proud to have had SpaceX as a guest on our stand at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/122" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2022">Monaco Yacht Show 2022</a> when they first launched their marine service.It’s not nice to hear for legacy providers, but the fact is that conventional VSAT is now only a backup service, and one that will be in decline for the next decade. On the new-build side, we are now working on the first generation of yachts that will not have any large satellite radomes, resulting in a stunningly sleek exterior. &nbsp;Some in the industry made mistakes over the last decades, recommending unripe technologies that were obsolete before they were even installed. However, we at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2965" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bond Technology Management (Company)">Bond</a> steered our clients to avoid this error and can today assure anyone reading this that those days are over.Internet at sea is now abundant and more affordable than ever, and as more services come online to complete with Starlink in the next years, it will only become more so.AV/IT upgrades are commonly requested during refit or maintenance periods when time is limited. What do crew and shipyards need to be aware of? Firstly, if the vessel has good infrastructure (quality ship run cabling, well built and cooled technical racks, etc..) then absolute refit costs will be much lower over time. It costs a bit more upfront to build good infrastructure, but it pays off in savings *forever*, while increasing the longevity and reliability of all systems. &nbsp;Therefore, if the vessel’s infrastructure is poor, with intermittent faults and outages, overheating equipment, etc.., it may be a wise long term investment to improve said infrastructure. It might not provide any new flashy capabilities for guests, but it can pave the way for more robust and affordable systems in the long run.Next, to get the best prices and ensure a smooth refit period, start developing your scope of work early and be realistic. Instead of trying to do everything at once, we have seen a trend with several customers whereby they prefer to develop an evolutionary upgrade strategy for their vessel with us. By breaking the upgrades into discrete chunks of work, it can result in lower costs and higher quality outcomes which don’t require the vessel to be out of service for any one long block of time.Lastly, logistical aspects such as hardware lead times, labor logistics and access to refit shipyards should not be underestimated. When these things go wrong they can cripple a refit, so they are best considered well in advance. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Reflecting on the origins of the Velarca 135 concept, Sami revealed that the idea emerged on a sunny day in August 2021 in Helsinki’s Kaivopuisto Park. Accompanied by an advertising agency and several bottles of champagne, the team were spurred by a bold vision. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/242232/image/large-8fd4ddc1c0153b0949334960523201b4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/242232">“We knew that motor yachts dominate the superyacht market with over 90 percent market share, which also means they produce most of the greenhouse gas emissions. So, we decided there and then to start selling sailing yachts to the motor yacht clientele,” Sami explained. This marked not only the birth of Velarca 135 but also the formation of a business model that would allow <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6600" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Isola Corvus Ltd. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> to enter the superyacht market, without a designer or shipyard already in place.One of the cornerstones of the Velarca 135 design is sustainability, a principle that Sami was determined to uphold without compromising on luxury. “Sustainability is a tricky word,” elaborated Sami. “Many luxury products have a longer lifespan because they are valuable, beautiful, and timeless. When asked about the design process, Sami recounted the strategic decisions that guided the yacht’s development. “We consulted well-known yacht brokers in the Mediterranean to understand what their customers prefer in terms of yacht size and amenities. (Company)">Isola Corvus</a> brings a fresh perspective, heavily influenced by Sami’s background in offshore racing. “We dared to do what we wanted without asking too many questions,” Sami explained, reflecting on the fearless approach that has driven the company forward. One significant innovation influenced by Sami’s racing experience was the rig design. “I was never a fan of the Chinese gybes, as the boom had the potential to cause damage or injury by slamming from side to side when jibing; so I wanted to eliminate the risks of this happening completely. The Velarca rig is simply a boomless, rope free, two masted solution, with two rolling and self-tacking jibs on each mast and a third jib in an inverted position between the two masts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/216499/image/large-e6b6b2919ec59af2b44f6642ef4ec58f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/216499">Despite their innovative spirit, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. “We didn’t have a designer or shipyard partner in the beginning, both of which are must-haves to even launch a design,” Sami admitted. However, a fortunate connection with Finnish superyacht hydraulics entrepreneur Nadine Proctor opened doors, leading to a partnership with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/164" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beiderbeck Designs (Company)">Beiderbeck Designs</a>. “By January 2022, the design was ready to launch,” Sami recalled. Can you give us some insight to what is involved?Hull form design can range from the simple to the complex in any vessel, superyacht or otherwise. How simple or complex one makes it really depends on the driving aims of a number of outcomes that need to be achieved in the final design. These typically include propulsive efficiency, comfort (seakeeping), construction considerations and practical alignment to the design intent of the overall vessel / its functionality. It is possible to address all of these in a simplistic manner, or equally with a high degree of engineering effort. Also, in the real world of commerce, time, budget and other resources play a role.In general, for a superyacht there is no one overall factor that dominates to the detriment of others. Some projects have a bias one way or another, but achieving an optimised result that delivers the very best result across all of these outcomes demands a rigorous process. Whilst not complex per se, it requires a high degree of insight via experience and grounding in a clear strategic approach to leverage the best result, when set against real-world commercial constraints.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325411/image/large-824189ecde9fb6967bcd09e46988355a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325411">It must be daunting to start with a blank sheet of paper, where do you even begin?Any notion of a blank sheet of paper is a misnomer. While every project results in a unique hull form that is specific to that design, one’s ability to optimise quickly, effectively in terms of results and with low technical (and therefore commercial) risk, means that we always begin via examination of our hull form family. By family I mean the many hulls that have been tested and / or proven in service, and the accompanying insight derived from the experience in their development. For <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a> that spans about thirty years of development reaching back into our heritage in specialised commercial vessels as well as superyachts. Marry to this a collaborative approach in development, with an experienced shipyard partner(s), and also model test institutions, the sum of the collective knowledge that can go into a new hull form is potentially very significant.&nbsp;It would be easy to select a ‘parent hull’ and simply manipulate and develop to achieve a good result on a new project, that is a fairly straightforward process. We take a more strategic approach aimed at the progressive development of a hull form family. That progressive development ensures that we are, over each successive generation, investigating, pursuing and employing technical developments that embody an engrained evolution of knowledge, data driven outcomes, and insight.There are exceptions to this. In more ‘blue-sky’ projects where novel or experimental fundamental technology is being explored then a ground up approach where you “challenge everything” is taken, but this is not suitable for conventional projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325412/image/large-7cf075d26588c70a0a160061ddd73616.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325412">In this evolutionary approach could the use of Artificial Intelligence and other computational methods be employed?The short answer to that is yes. The advancement of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) over the last half century (yes that long) has meant that the exploration of strategic evolutions has become faster, more reliable and more cost effective, certainly in the regime of propulsive efficiency. It has advanced the state of the art into progressively smaller steps because the state of the art is now very mature. The use of other computational methods encompassed by AI have and are bringing a new dimension to the state of the art. Ultimately they will serve to enable us to find new innovations, which in a mature state of the art environment, become progressively more demanding in time and resources to find. I personally think the real task for any AI, is to challenge the biases and paradigms that are an inherent part of being human. AI can help challenge and expand these paradigms by presenting data-driven perspectives that may differ from traditional viewpoints, potentially leading to innovative solutions and advancements. I do not prescribe to the idea that AI will make the human redundant, it will accelerate our abilities and augment our creativity.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325410/image/large-b2b16fcaaaffa7251bf58f189c4dc3bd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325410">How would you describe&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5009" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lateral Naval Architects (Company)">Lateral</a>'s hull form family and what developments are you working on?Our family is broad and diverse, and whilst it has a core focus on large displacement hulls, it also encompasses smaller families with different areas of focus, leveraging much from our heritage in other marine markets.&nbsp;Central to the family tree is our ‘Type-D’ series, now in its 10th generation with one keel of over 110m currently under construction. From that central family other variants are in development for different areas of the market in which we are active, our ‘Type-De’ series, specifically optimised for the use of azimuthing thruster propulsors (pod) with one keel over 110-metre currently under construction and a 130-metre in development. Our Type-L family addresses a smaller region of the market, namely the sub-85 metre load line in the 80/90 metre range, with the latest 80 metre variant having its keel laid this summer. All of these families have evolved around a blended optimisation of efficiency and comfort, adapting for progressive improvements in propulsor and stabilisation technologies.Our Series-UE (Ultra Efficient), as was initially created to underpin the LIFE platform upon which the 109-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bravo Eugenia109.0m (357'7&quot;)Oceanco2018">Bravo Eugenia</a> was built. We have continued exploration of this family looking at downscaling and leveraging further efficiency gains to enable more innovative engineering layouts, in turn enabling a more creative canvas for the design community. We have a new platform to launch based on the 3rd generation of UE Series, that is quite unusual and should enable design USP to be created in the market.Finally we have been actively developing smaller families, such as that which underpins our 50m Spitfire in Turkey, that is derived from mature and proven patrol vessel designs, yacht support operations derived from offshore oil and gas supply designs that have proven operation in very demanding conditions. Finally our Type-S series is a very refined and elegant design family incorporating integrated propulsion systems, the first 45 metre variant of which has been delivered from Turkey. This demands an approach that takes a broader range of variables into account, and therefore needs more elegant and multifaceted optimisation techniques. SES Yachts: A 50-year journey of custom crafted excellence

"Originally, I was looking for a motor catamaran for my personal use. It's important to note the geographic significance of Slovenia, which is bordered by Italy to the west and Croatia to the south and east. Slovenia attracts many visitors from the Czech Republic and other Eastern European countries. Additionally, our linguistic similarities foster a welcoming environment for these tourists.This early experience further fueled my interest in the nautical industry, which prompted me to explore additional opportunities. My breakthrough came at the Genoa Boat Show in 1994, where I discovered the Pershing brand. We also have an office in Prague, Czech Republic, and one in Belgrade, Serbia. Indeed, Slovenia and Croatia were not part of the European Union at that time, leading to intricate customs and logistics scenarios.To address these challenges, we significantly expanded our service network, which now covers all major marinas and key cruising locations along the Adriatic coast. These occasions allow us to engage deeply with our clientele in a setting that highlights both our latest offerings and our rich legacy. Moreover, we hosted a similar event last year where we invited all our clients and provided entertainment with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5733" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Technohull (Company)">Technohull</a> luxury RIBs, for which we are also the official regional dealers.These events, along with our yearly magazine and our 30th anniversary book, significantly enhance client engagement. Crucially, they also provide us with deeper insights into our clients' perspectives, such as whether they are considering acquiring a new yacht because their current one is becoming outdated or too small. Despite these successes, we recognise areas that require further improvement.Currently, like many in the industry, we face a shortage of skilled labour, particularly mechanics and electricians. The growth of our fleet has outpaced our staffing capabilities, highlighting the critical need to balance the number of yachts with employee recruitment to enhance our operations.Moreover, we have been improving our technological capabilities by investing in software programs that aim to more efficiently understand the yachts clients desire. This will better facilitate our sales strategies and improve our ability to track client inquiries and preferences. For instance, if a client expressed interest in a specific type of superyacht a year ago, these new systems will allow us to process that information more quickly and accurately. We have a dedicated team, much like a family, where each member, including my son, plays a crucial role. Together, we are committed to continuing our legacy for many more years to come.
