‘The birth of a new line of superyachts,’ is something you may have thought when you first saw Plvs Vltra. Yes, she is indeed the first of four units in the Dutch yacht builder’s new Limited Editions 242 collection so far, but there is certainly nothing generic about this vessel. With a name inspired by the ancient Pillars of Hercules signifying the edge of the known world, Plvs Vltra (translating to ‘farther beyond’) is as much a breakthrough in tradition and a pioneer of a new direction of yacht building and design as the meaning of her name suggests. Together with her experienced owner, the skills that a brand such as Amels hold, and the wealth of knowledge that owner's representatives Moran Yacht &amp; Ship brought to the project, she is setting the path for others to follow as the first of her kind.

It started with designer Tim Heywood, the man behind the exterior lines of all Amels’ Limited Editions superyachts. “Together with the Owner, we wanted to highlight Plvs Vltra’s profile with the paint scheme – the contrast of Jet Black on the superstructure between decks and the Matterhorn White, the graceful stripe following the form all the way from the bow to the transom.”

This created a strong and defined profile that makes Plvs Vltra very easily recognisable – “you can spot her instantly when she’s at the marina,” Heywood comments. This resulted in the perfect platform from which to build on the Limited Editions philosophy which combines a timeless design with feature-packed guest areas and a layout that will stand the test of time.

The 6.5-metre swimming pool on the main aft deck is certainly worth a mention. It is 1.2 metres deep and comes complete with its own current simulator that allows guests to enjoy a few morning warm-up ‘laps’ before breakfast. The remainder of the aft deck covers a staggering 180 square metres that is filled with several loose furniture pieces and a large lounging centrepiece.

Two levels above, on the bridge deck aft, an outdoor cinema continues the exterior fun but in a more toned-down kind of way. Perfect for those late night escapes after dinner, this area is neatly tucked away from the busier guest areas elsewhere on the yacht.

For daytime sunbathing and entertaining, few areas on Plvs Vltra are more suited than the sundeck. The circular Jacuzzi overlooks the forward part of the yacht and is surrounded by comfortable seating areas and wrap-around sun should be bathing cushions.

With the Amels 242 concept, Tim Heywood and the shipyard took the side balcony idea a step further by creating a large folding hatch at water level where guests can relax. Located amidships on the starboard side, this not only allows guests direct access to the spa area inside, but very importantly offers a calmer zone to board the tender from when anchored in choppy waters. The pitching motion often experienced at the stern when the swell picks up is not as evident in this section of the yacht.

Inside, guests can make use of the sauna and will immediately appreciate the natural light that flows in through large windows on either side along with the 2.2-metre headroom height that makes the beach club feel even bigger. “The large folding beach platform starboard adds yet more space, light and lets the sea breezes in,” comments Amels Design Manager, Hans Konings. “An external stair case provides guests with access to main deck.”

For Plvs Vltra’s interior, the owner selected Winch Design with whom he and his wife worked very closely with. “We discussed an eclectic mix of influences from classic French Riviera, art deco and contemporary style,” explains Interior Designer, Jim Dixon. “The Owner was inspired by the style of Versace as well as the Hotel Georges V in Paris”

The fully custom interior is truly a representation of the owner’s style and can clearly be picked up while walking through the yacht and taking in all the different colour schemes, materials, and surface elements. To make this particular style - with its delicate touches and finishings - yacht-friendly, Winch Design worked with Amels on designing ways to secure these priceless pieces of art such as the crystal chandeliers in the main saloon. Tiny metal pins keep these flamboyant pieces from flying across the room when the elements outside take a turn for the worse.

The added deck allowed the layout to house a forward-facing owner’s suite with spectacular views. The suite leads out onto its own foredeck to meet with friends in privacy and comfort.

No tour of the master suite is complete without a look inside the master bathroom. This forest of marble is finished with light rippled sycamore paneling to achieve that even-tone that makes the pastel greens and blues stand out.

A grand central staircase leads down to the lower deck and to the guest cabins. The same soothing yet highly detailed style of decoration is continued here with an even greater emphasis on bright colours. In Dixon’s words: “It’s a calm and cool interior with Côte d'Azur soft blues and yellows – soft tones reflected in the pastels and patterns on soft furnishings.”

All the way aft on the lower deck is the where Plvs Vltra’s tender garage is. It is here where her two 9.5-metre tenders are stowed along with an array of other watersports toys including a quadski and Seadoos and Seabobs.

Despite her slender and sleek exterior profile, Plvs Vltra consists of an internal volume of 1,790 Gross Tonnes. Her tested platform allows for a smooth experience at sea and the intensive engineering that went into the project by Amels' in-house team of engineers and naval architects is a testament to the lack of vibration and noise when cruising onboard the yacht. As Tim Heywood describes her: “She looks strong, she’s built to travel the oceans, and you can see that.” Her captain, Simon Truelove, agrees: "She is a very quiet boat, and something that we found on Plvs Vltra especially is that when we are at anhor we hardly ever have to use the stabilisers."
