Here’s a sneak peek at what’s inside.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357511/image/large-32971015d79041e1ec72d2e13e30718b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357511">How many superyachts are there in Asia?Over the past few years, SuperYacht Times has refined its yacht tracking capabilities using the Automatic Identification System (AIS) tracking signals that yachts emit, now covering more than 76% of all operating superyachts over 30 metres. For this report, AIS data was further enhanced by crosschecking the yachts transmitting on AIS against all yachts that are known to be in the area according to our records, providing one of the most comprehensive and accurate views to date of superyacht activity in the Asia-Pacific region.Missing vessels and their likely locations were incorporated into the dataset, ensuring maximum reliability of our analysis.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357507/image/large-e2d53a664142bb0230e77c8d9a77a598.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357507">Yachts in Asia-Pacific: larger than averageFrom January to December 2024, we recorded 530 unique superyachts active in the region – either permanently based there or visiting during the year. Of these, 343 yachts were owned by Asia-Pacific nationals, while 187 were foreign-flagged.Only 12% of the fleet were sailing yachts – lower than the global average of 15% – and the overall fleet in the region trends slightly larger than the global norm. Just 59% of the fleet fell into the 30–40-metre category (vs. 63% globally), while more than 20% exceeded 50 metres, compared to 16% worldwide. Number of yachts in the region is increasing While we counted a total of 530 unique superyachts in the Asia-Pacific region over the past year, annual figures vary as yachts are added to the local fleet or visit from outside the region. That said, the upward trend is clear. In 2022, we recorded 372 unique yachts. In 2023, this rose to 445, a 20% increase. By 2024, the figure climbed to 530, representing a further 19% growth. If this trend continues, the number of superyachts operating in the region could exceed 600 by the end of 2025.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/357508/image/large-aa8faedf4b62bc1d28c7b0846ecfe5ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/357508">Where are the yachts based?The Asia-Pacific region spans a diverse and expansive maritime landscape, from established yachting hubs to fast-growing destinations. According to our latest tracking data, Australia continues to attract the highest number of superyachts, with over 140 active yachts recorded in the past year – a testament to its strong infrastructure and appeal for long-range cruising.Singapore remains a key stopover, serving as a vital transit and provisioning hub for yachts moving between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Southeast Asia continues to show strong cruising activity, with countries like Thailand and Malaysia each recording more than 70 superyachts. The US Government and President Donald Trump announced a comprehensive tariff regime, dubbed “Liberation Day” on 2 April 2025 (yesterday), which includes a 20 percent reciprocal tariff on exports to the US from the European Union (EU).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/30218/image/large-8673d8081c2f8ea4435b9b181f1304bc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/30218">The new policy introduces a baseline 10 percent tariff on nearly all imports, with higher reciprocal tariffs imposed on countries deemed to maintain significant trade barriers against US products, such are those in the EU.The administration has justified these measures by citing the need to rectify large and persistent annual US goods trade deficits, which are viewed as a threat to national security and economic stability.&nbsp;The White House asserts that a lack of reciprocity in trade relationships, evidenced by disparate tariff rates and non-tariff barriers, has contributed to the erosion of the US manufacturing base and critical supply chains.The imposition of a 20 percent tariff on EU exports could have significant repercussions for the superyacht industry, particularly affecting European yacht builders and American buyers with increased costs for buyers, challenges for European builders and changes to the brokerage market.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355008/image/large-49c5dba8b78d80ed3faf2c2b560c90ed.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355008">What this could mean for yachtingA 20 percent reciprocal tariff on EU exports could raise costs for American clients who are interested in purchasing European-built superyachts. Buyers may face higher acquisition costs due to the tariffs, potentially leading to decreased demand or a shift towards alternative markets.As well as this, European shipyards, many of which are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), might experience a decline in orders from the US market, impacting production schedules and financial stability. In turn, the brokerage sector may need to adapt to changing market dynamics, possibly focusing more on domestic listings or exploring new markets less affected by the tariffs.According to <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a>, 565 of the over 6,000 operating yachts 30 metres and above are US flagged. This figure equates to around nine percent of the current fleet. As well as this, 258 of those are built outside of the US, which is just under half.As a result of this announcement, the industry association European Boating Industry (EBI) issued a statement on 3 April, expressing strong opposition to the tariffs, highlighting the potential risks to businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.EBI represents the recreational boating and nautical tourism industry in Europe, with members from national industry associations and key companies across boatbuilding, engine manufacturing, equipment supply, refit and maintenance, marinas, yacht charters and water sports rental.“European Boating Industry (EBI) strongly opposes tariffs and underlines the potential risks to businesses on both sides of the Atlantic and the entire value chain. The boating industry is globally integrated and North America and Europe are the largest markets. Tariffs disrupt businesses, hinder economic growth, and jeopardise jobs.”&nbsp;The global yacht industry is deeply interconnected with European yacht builders supplying a substantial portion of superyachts to American owners. Over recent years, many European shipyards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> have delivered projects to US clients, with the new tariffs meaning &nbsp;they could be at risk of incurring increased costs when exporting to the US.&nbsp;"This will undoubtedly impact companies importing yachts into the US, particularly large builders which rely heavily on the American market for a significant portion of its annual sales. The same applies to British brands such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, which have a strong presence in the US," explained broker Alex G. Clarke of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison Yachting</a>.European yacht-building powerhouses like Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK will be directly affected, with uncertainty still remaining over whether these new tariffs stack with the existing 25 percent duties on steel and aluminium, with reports suggesting that they won’t.These new tariffs would also directly affect the economies of many other countries such as China, which has a strong background in boat building. China currently faces a 34 percent tariff, with fears that this will spark inflation, recession and potentially a global trade war.However, despite the introduction of new tariffs, certain aspects of yacht ownership for US buyers will remain unaffected. "The approach for new-builds purchased by American buyers in foreign countries such as Italy, Turkey, or Northern Europe will remain unchanged," added Clarke. "These yachts will continue to be foreign-flagged, with ownership often structured through foreign corporations for tax and liability purposes."“However, buyers should be aware of a potential price increase of 10 to 20 percent that was not previously factored in. Additionally, those who ordered a yacht a few years ago and are now preparing to take delivery may face unexpected costs due to these tariffs, impacting their final payments. Another key consideration is the cost of importing the yacht into the United States and the challenges of securing a US cruising permit if the vessel is not US Duty Paid."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355049/image/large-3d3a02bdefcb01051061e471c5835d20.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355049">The effect of tariffs on the marketPresident Trump has argued that many of the United States' trading partners have taken advantage of lower US tariff rates while applying higher taxes on American exports. Developing economies across Africa, Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia are anticipated to face significant challenges, either due to specific tariff increases or broad import duties imposed on goods from these regions.Tariffs of this magnitude risk disrupting business operations, slowing economic growth and impacting employment, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that dominate the sector.According to EBI, SMEs form the backbone of Europe’s recreational boating industry, accounting for over 96 percent of the sector’s 32,000 businesses and employing more than 280,000 people. Additional costs imposed by tariffs could lead to reduced sales, increased financial strain on companies and a shift in market dynamics.For American buyers interested in purchasing European-built yachts, a 20 percent tariff represents a significant increase in acquisition costs. This could deter potential buyers or drive them towards alternative markets, including domestic US builders or non-EU yacht manufacturers such as those in Asia, many of whom already target the American client base.Furthermore, the superyacht brokerage sector could see a slowdown in transactions for European-built vessels, as higher import costs may make some yachts less attractive. This situation echoes the impact of previous tariff disputes, where added costs resulted in delayed or cancelled orders."The final outcome and impact of the tariffs will take time to unfold as markets adjust and countries potentially reciprocate with increased taxes, so we are far from reaching a definitive resolution. However, it is clear that the tariffs are already having a negative effect, as many American buyers have temporarily put their yacht purchases on hold to assess the situation. Maintaining free trade between these key markets is vital for sustaining the superyacht sector’s long-term health and competitiveness.“We welcome the EU’s objective to reach a negotiated solution with the US and EBI stands ready to contribute with proposals to enhance the recreational boating industry’s mutual success. The permanent removal of tariffs would support economic growth, jobs and investment on both sides of the Atlantic.”The EU has already signalled that it may retaliate with tariffs on €26 billion worth of American goods, including boats. However, a two-week pause on implementation has been put in place, suggesting that there is still room for negotiations.The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), which represents the US recreational boating industry, has been actively monitoring the tariff situation and advocating for policies that protect domestic manufacturers. While the organisation acknowledges the administration's goal of strengthening American industry, it has urged the government to adopt a more measured approach to trade enforcement.“The recreational boating industry is a proudly made in America industry that supports more than 812,000 American jobs and generates $230 billion in annual economic impact,” they explained in a statement. “NMMA is closely monitoring developments and engaging with administration officials to ensure the voice of the recreational marine industry is heard.”As discussions continue, industry stakeholders will be following these developments and exploring potential strategies to mitigate the impact of the new tariffs. According to <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a> data, sales of used 30-metre-plus yachts experienced a slight decline of approximately 3% in 2024, with 305 yachts sold compared to 314 in the previous year. This represents a 40% decrease from the peak year of 2021, when 515 yachts were sold - the highest sales figure for 30-metre-plus used yachts sales recorded. Nevertheless, sales still remain slightly above the pre-pandemic levels, with 293 used yacht sales recorded in 2019. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347811/image/large-13dcfc95af1ed88b54bd6f0d8d80e911.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347811">This dynamic mirrors trends observed in the new yacht sales market, suggesting that the yacht brokerage market may have completed a cycle since 2019. This view is reinforced by Dimitris Kyriazakos, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2510" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="EKKA Yachts (Company)">EKKA Yachts</a>, who sees the decrease in sales as part of a 'maturing market' or the conclusion of a long five-year market cycle. He anticipates these trends will continue into 2025Despite a continual decrease from used yacht sales from 2021 onwards, the total value of used yacht sales for 30-metre-plus vessels remained high, at €4.4 billion. This reflects a modest decrease of just 5% compared to 2023 and a substantial decline of approximately 18% from the 2021 peak of €5.3 billion. Nonetheless, it represents around 7% increase in value of sales from 2022 and a significant 43% rise from pre-pandemic levels in 2019, which stood at €3.1 billion, as depicted in the graph below.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347812/image/large-9fece20374d7edf42a71268b5e67c6ac.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347812">Raphael Sauleau, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>, maintains that the evolution of the brokerage market over the past few years reflects broader industry trends, from post-pandemic demand surges to a more measured and selective buyer approach in 2024. He further adds, “While sales volumes have declined from their 2021 peak, the overall transaction values remain somewhat high, driven by sustained interest in newer, well-maintained yachts and the rising cost of new builds.”Juan Andrade, a Sales Broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2237" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYachtsMonaco (Company)">SuperYachts Monaco</a>, links the high total value of yacht sales, despite a decrease in the number of used yachts sold since 2021, to post-COVID market dynamics. “Right after COVID in 2021, there was a surge in buying activity, particularly among clients with budgets ranging from one to five million euros, who were keen to purchase. Additionally, some clients paid premium prices, which increased both the number of sales and the total value,” he explains.Expanding on this point Andrade further notes that the ongoing high asking prices can be attributed to owners who, several years after making their high-priced purchases, are now looking to sell. “Two to four years later, those who bought at premium prices are either upgrading or discovering that yachting doesn’t suit their lifestyle,” he says. “They are trying to recoup some of their investment, which keeps asking prices elevated. Unfortunately, the pool of buyers in the one to five million euro range has diminished, leading to many unsuccessful sales.” According to Andrade, this situation has helped maintain the overall high value of transactions, despite a reduction in the number of yachts sold this year.Echoing Andrade's insights, Sauleau also emphasises the challenges in pricing strategy, stating: "Pricing misalignment between buyers and sellers continues to pose challenges, especially for those who purchased at premium prices and are now looking to resell."Through <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a>, an analysis of the total asking prices for the top five used yachts sold in 2024 reveals they amounted to €1.05 billion, compared to €1.04 billion in 2023. Some of the yachts with the highest asking prices this year include the 90.02-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1677" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix 290.02m (295'4&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2010">Phoenix 2</a> and the 74-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5957" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="New Secret74.0m (242'9&quot;)Amels2017">New Secret</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/286291/image/large-314443d37396c15d2bff82c44ddcbed0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/286291">Kyriazakos elucidates why valuations remain high by directly linking the robustness of used yacht market valuations to the production output and market dynamics in the new-build market. The post-pandemic boom of 2021 and 2022 not only expanded the brokerage market but also led to significant backlogs for builders," he explains. "In response, builders raised their price lists annually due to rising material costs. This situation provided an arbitrage opportunity for those who took deliveries between 2021 and 2023. They could list and often sell their yachts at prices significantly higher than their initial purchase costs, thanks to the escalated replacement costs." Consequently, "buyers saw a chance to acquire almost new yachts without the extended wait times associated with new builds,” posits Kyriazakos.Analysing Gross Tonnage (GT) trends When comparing the total GT of used 30m+ yachts sold from 2019 to 2024 with the average GT, it becomes evident that the peak in 2021 – when total GT reached 220,851 while average GT remained approximately 429 – was driven by a higher number of sales rather than a shift toward larger yachts. This aligns with Andrade's analysis, which highlights that many buyers in 2021 opted for smaller yachts.Moreover, in 2023, total GT declined to 154,977, while average GT rose to 494. This suggests that although fewer yachts were sold, those that did sell were generally larger, indicating either a shift in buyer preference toward higher GT yachts or a decline in smaller yacht transactions. Andrade supports this observation, explaining that &nbsp;“buyers who typically rely on financing are not in the market at the moment, whereas those who don’t require financing are still acquiring yachts.” The relationship between total GT and average GT of used 30m+ yacht sales is illustrated in the graphs below.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347813/image/large-4fe78a7367677c000886c75dcff97cca.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347813"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347814/image/large-494b40b2d48110a32866e2d8a5ffff4b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347814">In 2024, total GT continued to decline to 130,517, while average GT fell to 428 from its 2023 peak of 494. However, it remained higher than in 2022 and only slightly below 2021. This suggests that despite a decrease in overall sales, more voluminous yachts are still being sold.Between 2019 and 2020, the average price per GT dropped sharply by 11%, likely due to market uncertainty at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, since 2021, the average price per GT of used 30m+ yachts has been rising steadily, reaching a record high of €32,500 in 2024 - a 6% increase from 2023 and a 32% increase from 2021, as shown in the graph below.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347815/image/large-593c719f14936c2b0264833d8e5f8806.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347815">According to Andrade, the rising average price per GT of yachts can be attributed to the increasing inflationary costs of new builds, coupled with their extended delivery times. This situation has led buyers to pay a premium for desirable yachts currently on the market. Andrade elaborates, stating, “The cost of new builds is extremely high, and delivery times are long, with many yachts not available until 2029 or even 2030. As a result, the market for new builds is currently less attractive, prompting buyers to increasingly focus on recent or very recent second-hand yachts.”This trend is further confirmed by <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a> data, shown in the graph below, which illustrates the average number of days on the market for used 30m+ yachts sold between &nbsp;2019 and &nbsp;2024. The data indicates a steady decline since 2021, with a 22% decrease from 2021 to 2024.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347816/image/large-a5229d76452697d62111a26987789971.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347816">In addition, examining the average age of used 30m+ yachts sold from 2019 points to &nbsp;buyers preferring recently built yachts. Indeed, the average age has steadily declined from 22 in 2019 to 17.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347817/image/large-4eb8b79ab38b2159a5a66573b87d72ab.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347817">According to Kyriazakos, the trend of declining average age in yacht sales is closely tied to the increased production output that began in 2019. He explains: “With more new-builds launched each year since then, the market has seen a growing availability of 'younger' yachts. This trend aligns with buyer preferences for newer vessels, often perceived as better, and is expected to continue over the next 2-3 years as newer inventory becomes increasingly available for sale.” He contrasts this with the period of 2017-2018, marked by a noticeable scarcity of new yachts due to reduced production following the 2008 financial crisis. Kyriazakos’ analysis highlights how changes in production levels over the years have directly impacted the age profile of yachts available on the market.Analysing Length TrendsExamining the total length of used 30m+ yachts sold reveals a dramatic peak in 2021, reaching approximately 21-kilometres, a significant 57% increase from 2020. This peak was followed by a noticeable decline, culminating in a reduction of 40% by 2024 from the 2021 levels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347818/image/large-d1830acd75e933968296856aca9ae48d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347818">When evaluating the average yacht length, as depicted in the graph below, it is clear that the average length in 2021 remained relatively stable compared to 2019 and 2020. This stability indicates that the spike in total length was primarily due to a higher number of yachts sold, rather than an increase in the size of the yachts being sold.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347819/image/large-006343d21cc8d6768e91422ee2184b3a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347819">Post-2021, while the total length continued to decrease, the average length exhibited less volatility. This is particularly evident in 2023, where the average length peaked at 42.7-metres, despite a significantly lower total length than the peak of 21-kilometres in 2021. This trend suggests that although fewer yachts were sold, those that were sold tended to be of a relatively larger size.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/347820/image/large-3099e517037c610da817e9e067b4f11c.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/347820">Assessing the various yacht length segments from 2019 to 2024 reveals while most segments experienced a decline in sales from their peak in 2021, the 40-50-metre segment demonstrated unique growth in 2024, with sales increasing to 84 units, up from 64 in 2023, approximately 31%. This uptick contrasts sharply with the general downward trend observed in other segments, such as the 30-40-metre and the larger 50-60-metre categories, which continued to see reduced sales. Andrade offers an explanation for the increased interest in the 40-50-metre segment, noting its appeal due to the substantial amenities these yachts offer under the 500GT threshold, characterising them as the "sweet spot" in the current market.Simon Goldsworthy, a Sales Broker at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/124" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Edmiston (Company)">Edmiston</a>, states: "There is no longer a single 'yacht market'; instead, we see wildly different segments performing in completely different ways. For larger, nearly new vessels over 50-metres, where there is a lack of supply, it remains a seller’s market. Conversely, the market for older and smaller vessels has become entirely a buyer’s market. In these segments, some sellers hold unrealistic expectations about recouping their investments, harking back to days when yachts could sit unsold for years. Additionally, the market dynamics are frustrating for brokers as some overvalue yachts to secure listings, which ultimately do not sell because they cater to clients who prefer optimism over realistic market evaluations."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/301497/image/large-b0f174fa2c8dcf7946d08f5b6387ceea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/301497">Dimitris concurs with Andrade’s observation on the appeal of the sub-500GT range but adds that larger 40-metre vessels are proving more resilient compared to those in the 30-40-metre range. This resilience might be partly due to a growing charter fleet and specifically an increasing appetite in the 40-50 metre/sub-500GT range, which for many is considered the perfect compromise between size and return on investment for charter operations. Traditional charter markets such as the Western Mediterranean have shown great potential for fleet growth, especially during and after the pandemic, enticing owners of smaller craft to invest in larger and newer vessels. Additionally, emerging charter markets in regions like Greece and the Gulf have provided ample opportunities for the expansion of the larger yacht charter fleet."Sauleau reflects on broader industry dynamics that underscore ongoing adjustments within the yacht brokerage market. He points out that shifts in buyer demographics, the resilience of certain size segments - most notably the 40-50-metre range, and the ongoing expansion of charter markets are all playing significant roles in shaping the industry. With new-build availability still constrained and financing-dependent buyers less active, Sauleau anticipates that the market will continue adjusting in the coming years. He emphasises the importance of aligning pricing, inventory, and buyer expectations more closely over time. Additionally, Sauleau &nbsp;notes that while the U.S. market, a historical key driver, shows a renewed level of activity, particularly in terms of inquiries, the anticipated surge in sales following recent election results has yet to materialise. A federal judge in Florida has dismissed a class-action lawsuit that accused the world's largest yacht brokers’ association and other entities of charging boat sellers inflated sales commissions. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289300/image/large-1ffa49ca8775f0bb7ce606cad8163ecf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289300">The lawsuit, initiated by a group of yacht sellers, claimed that the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6362" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYBA (Company)">International Yacht Brokers Association</a>, along with Boat Trader, Yacht World and Boats Group LLC - the operator of Boats.com - had violated antitrust laws. Historically, US shipyards also had a large share of the superyacht new-build market, but their presence all but disappeared in the years following the global financial crisis of 2008. As of late 2024, the main remaining US players over 30 metres are <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta Marine</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport Yachts</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/145" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burger Boat Company (Company)">Burger Boat</a>. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/466" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hatteras Yachts (Company)">Hatteras Yachts</a> has also extensively built yachts over 30 metres in the past, and is still capable of doing so. The same can be said for some of the dedicated US sportfisherman yacht builders, who still build a significant number of yachts between 24 and 30 metres each year.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304581/image/large-3d2f28597b4ac5981aeebfd08c1f4ffe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304581">As US builders used to have a significant presence, it may come as no surprise that their share of the operating fleet over 30 metres is still quite large, at 785 yachts out of 6,006 a share of 13%. US yards’ share of the construction book over 30 metres is smaller however, with 10 yachts out of a total of 616, amounting to a share of just 1.6%.Shannon McCoy, Yacht Sales and Charter Consultant at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2529" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Worth Avenue Yachts (Company)">Worth Avenue Yachts</a> comments: “Many of my clients prefer US-built yachts, so it’s unfortunate that we’ve lost renowned American shipyards like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/149" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christensen Shipyards, LLC. (Company)">Christensen</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts (Company)">Trinity,</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/121" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palmer Johnson Yachts (Company)">Palmer Johnson</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/613" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lazzara Yachts (Company)">Lazzara</a>, and custom Northwest yards such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/610" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northcoast Yachts (Company)">North Coast</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/735" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northern Marine Co. LLC (Company)">Northern</a>. Many Americans want to support local businesses, and these yards produced – and continue to produce – exceptional yachts. It would be great to revive these lost brands, create US jobs, and deliver superb products once again from the US.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/32303/image/large-4c9e3ae385bcf6e96f2d996d82ef2e9a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/32303">US buyers continue to lead in new-build purchasesWhile domestic superyacht construction may have dwindled, the appetite of US buyers for new-builds has not. In fact, it rose sharply during the pandemic and has remained strong throughout 2024. Between 1 January 2019 and 30 September 2024, <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a> recorded 1,260 new-build sales worldwide over 30 metres, and for 939 of those, we have been able to identify at least the buying owner’s nationality. Of those 939, some 258 new yachts were bought by US owners, a share of 27%. In reality, the US share is probably even higher, as many new-build sales are not public and it may take some time to identify the buyer.&nbsp;The number of new-build purchases over 30 metres by US buyers peaked at 65 yachts in 2021. This number remained relatively steady in 2022, with 61 sales to US buyers, despite a declining market. During the same period, global sales of new-builds over 30 metres dropped by 20% in terms of the number of yachts sold. In 2023, there was a further decline, with sales dropping back to pre-Covid levels, reaching just 36 sales.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335820/image/large-a26c598cab211aed815ee4bfa721defc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335820">Unfortunately, 2024 has so far been less favourable for new-build sales to US clients, with only 24 sales in the first three quarters, meaning the market could see around 32 sales by the end of the year if this trend continues. Nevertheless, the US market continues to occupy first place in worldwide new superyacht sales.<ul><li style="font-style: italic;">Further reading:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/yacht-news/fort-lauderdale-international-boat-show-2024-seminars" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">A full summary of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2024 seminars</a></li></ul>Looking at used yacht salesIn the used yacht market, American buyers leave an even greater mark. Since the beginning of 2019 until the end of September 2024, US buyers have accounted for 40% of the sold used yachts over 30 metres for which we know the buying owner’s nationality. A total of 2,098 used yachts were sold worldwide in this period, and for 1,373 of these, <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a> identified the buying owner’s nationality. 545 of these were US buyers, a share of 40%.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335817/image/large-70c31922d53c49a7d29c1b0b708a2b9b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335817">As with new-build sales, sales of used yachts to US buyers peaked in 2021, at 170 yachts, but then started quite a steep downward trajectory, down to just 75 sales in 2023, which was below pre-COVID levels. In the first three quarters of 2024, <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht iQ</a> noted a mere 36 used yacht sales to US buyers, which suggests the year could end on around 50 sales.According to Kevin Ralph, Yacht Consultant at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2529" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Worth Avenue Yachts (Company)">Worth Avenue Yachts</a>, this market contraction is interpreted as a “return to normal” after the brokerage boom witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The number of large superyachts sold, both in brokerage and new sales, was unprecedented during the COVID pandemic, peaking in 2021, leading to a significant run-up in pricing. As the saying goes, what goes up must come down.” Other factors contributing to this trend include economic and political uncertainty, causing many potential buyers to adopt a “wait and see” stance regarding yacht acquisitions or upgrades. This year has also seen a record number of elections, alongside continued instability in both the Middle East and Ukraine.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/338862/image/large-abbaa8c0aab5a21331add754c8b1bf89.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/338862">US Presidential electionsThe 2024 US presidential elections, held on 5 November, brought some predictability to what had been a year marked by uncertainty. “In a presidential election year, US superyacht sales tend to slow down as buyers often feel uncertain about the financial future. Many prefer to wait until after the election to make large purchases, like a yacht, once they have a clearer picture of the economic outlook,” explains <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a> sales and charter broker Mark Elliott. This year, “inflation and market jitters” also compounded these effects, he adds.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217589/image/large-e99ae030f5049a0678404c9d8941c3fe.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217589">Kevin Ralph notes that “this slowdown began to be felt at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/183" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - 2023">FLIBS 2023</a> and became more apparent at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palm Beach International Boat Show - 2024">Palm Beach International Boat Show</a> in March 2024.” He adds: “I don’t believe this is truly a slowdown when viewed against longer-term statistics, but given the unprecedented recent sales cycle, many will perceive it as such.” He also points out that “while the US presidential elections may have some effect on the market, they are not nearly as significant as the deflation of the sales cycle and pricing caused by the global COVID pandemic, which has no real equivalent in modern history.”Now that the election results are in, the market’s trajectory remains uncertain. Mark Elliott predicts that “uncertainty [will linger] until at least a month after the election, and it may take longer to stabilise.” He hopes for “price stabilisation, interest rate cuts, and a less volatile stock market” to boost confidence in the coming months.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335703/image/large-eeea4c66d3eb6cc4371ee7c2007f2c31.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335703">Looking ahead, Kevin Ralph believes that “the sales cycle will reset, regardless of which political party takes office; the only question is how significant the reset will be and how long it will be before it takes hold. We’ll have a much clearer picture after November, but I expect some confusion until January when the next president enters office. Then depending on which side wins, there will be some additional time while people work out the tax implications. Either way, I expect 2025 to continue at a more normalised pace.”Superyacht trends to watchMark Elliott observes that more buyers are “looking to charter their superyachts,” and expedition-style and support vessels are gaining popularity. While demand for superyachts over 80 metres remains strong, he expects this trend to unfold more slowly. Shannon McCoy highlights that the 70-metre-plus market has limited availability of well-priced late-model yachts.&nbsp;Her younger clients often seek larger spaces, expansive outdoor areas, bigger hot tubs, and floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light. Primary staterooms with private outdoor space are also in high demand. Brands like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/18" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amels (Company)">Amels</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> are frequently mentioned. Shannon McCoy further adds that the pandemic sparked interest in spending more time on the water, but many found smaller yachts lacked the necessary storage, range, and amenities, driving demand for larger, exploration yachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335808/image/large-f78633fc2154007bc1ab933c4346d9e7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335808">Pierre Badin, Europe Broker with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/833" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Denison Yachting (Company)">Denison Yachting</a>, highlights that sport fishing is particularly popular in the US, a trend not seen as much in Europe. “The first question I often get from American buyers is about the draft of the boat, which is something European buyers rarely ask. In the US, buyers want a boat with a shallow draft to get close to the beautiful beaches in the Bahamas,” he adds. Pierre Badin also highlights that American buyers typically purchase superyachts for the Caribbean season, which runs from Christmas to June. “Regardless of a global slowdown in superyacht sales, the US is still the largest buying segment and the most active brokerage market in Florida in the winter (and there’s still some great cruising in the Bahamas and Caribbean),” reminds Kevin Ralph.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/338863/image/large-1e155bf7c29dbd207464fbc1e99c7d6b.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/338863">As the US superyacht sales market navigates economic and political uncertainty, including the impending presidential election, industry stakeholders remain cautious yet optimistic. While recent trends indicate a contraction, the resilience of American buyers and brokers will be crucial in adapting to the evolving landscape of superyacht sales in the coming year.

The US superyacht market in a nutshell

In their latest financial disclosure, the Board of Directors of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>, presided over by Chairman Massimo Perotti, convened to evaluate and endorse the financial results for the period ending on 30 September 2024.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320979/image/large-649a94dae16898ab9df849136057ab5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320979">Consolidated net revenues new yachts&nbsp;Net Revenues from new-build yachts (Net Revenue New Yachts) for the first nine months of 2024 reached €669 million, with €253.9 million generated in the third quarter alone. This marks a 6.9% increase from €626 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.&nbsp;For the first nine months of 2024, the Yacht Division reported Net Revenues New Yachts of €384.4 million. This figure is attributed to contributions from the initial sales of the SP92 and SL86-Asymmetric models, unveiled at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/210" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cannes Yachting Festival - 2024">2024 Cannes Yachting Festival,</a> as well as the pre-launch sales of the SD132 model.The Superyacht Division reported robust performance, recording Net Revenues New Yachts of €198 million for the first nine months of 2024. This marks a 15.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023, primarily driven by the continued success of the Steel line.The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bluegame (Company)">Bluegame</a> Division reported Net Revenues New Yachts of €69 million for the first nine months of 2024, representing a 3.1% increase from the same period in 2023.An additional contribution of €17.6 million was recorded by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan Division</a>, which was consolidated starting from 1 August 2024. This figure represents revenues generated in just two months, August and September, of the nine-month reporting period.Furthermore, a geographical breakdown of net revenues shows a return to historical trends, with a more diversified mix than in 2023. The Americas experienced significant growth of 38.8%, while the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region saw robust development at 80%, and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region had solid performance, increasing by 16.6%, though Mainland China was an exception. However, Europe experienced a 9%.&nbsp;Consolidated operating and net resultsEarnings before interest depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) reached €123.6 million, an increase of 8.6% compared to €113.8 million in the first nine months of 2023. The margin on Net Revenues New Yachts stood at 18.5%, rising by 30 basis points from the previous year and by 50 basis points when excluding the impact of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a>'s consolidation.EBIT reached €97.5 million, marking a 6.8% increase from €91.3 million in the first nine months of 2023. The margin on Net Revenues New Yachts stood at 14.6%, reflecting the dilutive effect of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a>'s consolidation. Excluding this impact, the margin would be 14.9%, a rise of 30 basis points from the previous year. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a>'s comparatively smaller scale contributes to a higher incidence of depreciation and amortisation on revenues than the group average.Pre-tax profit reached €101 million, marking a 7.3% increase from the €94.1 million recorded in the first nine months of 2023. Similarly, the group net profit rose to €72.9 million, up by 9% from €66.9 million during the same period last year. The margin on Net Revenues New Yachts was 10.9%, an improvement of 20 basis points over the previous year, enhanced by net financial income of €3.4 million.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298552/image/large-7852cafec36587fb5fa33772c6d2e93d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298552">Consolidated balance sheet and financial resultsAs of 30 September 2024, net working capital stood at negative €4.2 million, marking a substantial improvement from negative €34.9 million as of 31 December 2023 and negative €59.5 million as of 30 September 2023. This shift indicates a normalisation of seasonality trends and order intakes in the post-COVID period, essentially neutralising the impact of net working capital on Net Revenues New Yachts .Inventories reached €153.6 million, reflecting increases of €68.2 million since 31 December 2023, and €79.5 million since 30 September 2023. These rises are primarily due to higher levels of raw materials and work-in-progress products, aimed at accelerating production to meet demand for the most sought-after models. Additionally, finished product inventories stood at €43.8 million, an increase of €21.8 million from the end of 2023.Organic net investments during 2024 amounted to €27.8 million, with 88% directed towards expanding industrial capacity and developing new models and product ranges. These investments represented 4.1% of Net Revenues New Yachts, reflecting a reduction driven by a growing revenue base, despite consistent investment levels required for new model development. Including the consolidation of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine Group</a> and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan Group</a>, total investments rose to €162.1 million.The net cash position stood at €27.2 million, down from €140.5 million on 31 December 2023. This change reflects temporary cash absorption driven by key factors, including dividend payments of €34.6 million, organic net investments of €27.8 million, and extraordinary disbursements totalling €82.9 million. These disbursements included €5.4 million for treasury share purchases in Q3 and investments in M&amp;A. Specifically, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan Group</a> acquisition impacted the net financial position by €53.6 million, comprising €32.4 million for a 60% stake purchase and €21.2 million for consolidating its financial position. The acquisition of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine Group</a> added €23.9 million to the total. Excluding these extraordinary disbursements, the net financial position would have been €110.1 million.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/289245/image/large-500b25b57fef38c2479f03d4e2bac261.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/289245">BacklogThe backlog as of 30 September 2024 stood at €1,719.9 million, including €128.7 million attributable to the newly acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan Division</a>, up from €1,674.1 million a year earlier. This increase of €45.8 million reflects the contribution of the acquisition during the reporting period.Net backlog reached €1,050.9 million, compared to €950 million as of 30 June 2024, representing a coverage level exceeding 1.1 times the annual revenues – a figure higher than pre-COVID levels. For fiscal year 2024, the backlog provides strong visibility on future revenues, with €875.9 million (94% of the mid-point of the 2024 Net Revenues New Yachts Guidance) allocated to the current year and €844 million for subsequent years.Order intake for the first nine months of 2024 totalled €582.7 million, reflecting a normalisation compared to €604.5 million in the same period of 2023. This adjustment is attributed to the return of typical seasonality following the extraordinary post-COVID demand and extended delivery times for superyachts due to a high volume of pre-existing orders.2024 Guidance<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has reaffirmed its 2024 guidance for Net Revenues New Yachts, EBITDA, EBIT, Group Net Profit, and Investments. This outlook applies to both organic operations and a consolidated basis, incorporating the five-month contribution from the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan Group</a> between August and December.In addition, the reabsorption of net working capital, achieved faster than initially anticipated, has led to a revision of the Organic Guidance for the Net Financial Position as of 31 December 2024. The new range is set at €110 to 120 million, down from the previously projected €160 to 170 million. With a Net Backlog exceeding one billion euros, 90% of which is sold to final clients with whom we have established close and authentic relationships, we are immune to the stocking-destocking dynamics of distribution networks typical of players exposed to smaller-sized and/or lower-positioned product segments.”

Sanlorenzo reports a 9% increase in group net profit

The Board of Directors of Sanlorenzo have convened to evaluate and endorse the financial results for the period ending September 30, 2024.

Following the publication of the 50th issue of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4509" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="SuperYacht Times (Company)">SuperYacht Times</a> newspaper, Ralph Dazert, our Head of Intelligence, takes stock of the performance of the new yacht sales over the first half of 2024 and compares them with the same period of 2023. The numbers corroborate the perceived downturn of the market, but there are also some bright spots...<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/290842/image/large-cafcec4880398ac75a1f8276a9d4d3b1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/290842">Sales down by 25%At first glance, the sales figures for new yachts over 30-metres during the first six months don’t make pleasant reading for shipyard execs, as total sales in numbers of yachts are down by about 25%, from 110 during the first half of 2023 to 83 during the same period in 2024. However, when we zoom in on the various subsegments, the picture is more mixed:The 30-40-metre market, being the largest segment, also bore the brunt of the downturn in sales, as we noted just 35 new sales until 30 June 2024, compared to 62 in the same period of 2023, a drop of 44%. The strong drop in sales in this segment is also apparent in the sales numbers for Italian builders, who are traditionally strong between 30 and 40-metres. Sales of Italian-made new-builds dropped by 41%, from 80 to 47 yachts of all sizes. Also Turkish shipyards sold no new-builds between 30 and 40 metres in the first six months of 2024 against six in the same period of 2023. Meanwhile shipyards in the UAE and Taiwan posted higher sales in this segment in 2024 compared to the previous year.The slower sales between 30 and 40-metres also translate into a higher share of in-build yachts for sale in this category. At the start of 2023 this share stood at 21%, while at the start of 2024, it had gone up to 28%, and as of early July 2024 it stood at 32%, almost a third. At the same time, a share of 32% of in-build yachts for sale is not something to be unduly worried about. In early 2021, just as the Covid sales peak was starting, no less 38% of the in-build yachts between 30 and 40 metres were for sale.&nbsp;The 50-60-metre segment also saw a decline of 20% in sales from 10 to eight yachts, while the 60-80-metre segment was particularly impacted with a drop in sales of 50% from 10 to five yachts. Meanwhile the 40-50-metre segment bucked the downward trend, as 27 new yachts were sold so far in 2024 against 25 in the corresponding period of 2023. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/317636/image/large-9dd9666253f164fdd95754c891d17450.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/317636">Good news was also to be found in the very large yacht segment over 80-metres. During the first six months of 2023 we noted a mere three sales there but in the same period of 2024, this went up to eight yachts, which already matches the sales number for the full year of 2023 when we also noted eight sales. So it looks like the yards in this top segment are recovering rapidly after a very poor year in 2023, when several prestigious yards in Northern Europe sold no new yachts at all. What’s even more, five of the eight yachts sold in 2024 are over 100-metres against just one in the same period of 2023. As we have noted before, sales over 80-metres seem to have a rhythm of their own, and 2024 is no exception.The resurgence of sales of very large new yachts has mainly been good news for the Dutch and German yards. We noted 10 sales of new yachts over 30-metres in the Netherlands in the first six months of 2024, against six in the same period of 2023. Meanwhile, we noted three sales in Germany so far this year, against zero in the same period of 2023.Of course, a roundup like this is not complete without looking at the sailing yacht market. Unfortunately, sales of new sailing yachts over 30-metres remain at a low level, but the interesting fact is that the number of sales is holding steady at five units, both in the first six months of 2023 and in the same period of 2024, while motor yacht sales dropped.&nbsp;So, while new-build sales in 2024 are definitely down on 2023, it mostly seems to be a situation of “back to normal” after the peak of 2021/’22, while some subsegments continue to perform well or are even recovering after poor results in 2023.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335420/image/large-f9026ad5feea45801224dd5b9c61c0cf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335420">This story and more are published in Issue 50 of the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/newspaper" target="_blank">SuperYacht Times newspaper</a>, out now! While the over 40 metre segment continues to demonstrate healthy growth, the 30 to 40 metre category is experiencing a marked decline in new orders.After peaking at 375 new superyacht sales in 2021, the market recorded 195 new-builds in 2024. At the same time, deliveries have continued to rise, from 163 in 2021 to 228 in 2024 as shipyards work through a once-record backlog of orders. That backlog stood at 695 yachts at the start of 2024 but has since begun to decline for the first time in years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360142/image/large-0e57af53390af9de0374fcf22e4e9dda.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360142">The clearest trend, however, is the divergence between market segments. New orders in the 30 to 40 metre range dropped by 20 percent between 2023 and 2024, while those in the 40 to 50 metre bracket rose by 28 percent. In total, segments above 40 metres recorded a 13 percent increase in new orders during the same period.“The market is moving towards a two-speed dynamic,” said Ralph Dazert during the session. “Buyers in the upper segments are continuing to invest, while the more accessible size ranges are seeing hesitation, likely due to broader economic uncertainties.”In the first quarter of 2025 alone, new sales of 30 to 40 metre yachts dropped dramatically from 35 units in Q1 2024 to just 15. Units above 40 metres also fell, from 36 to 26, hinting at a potential slowdown across the board, possibly influenced by tariff announcements and macroeconomic pressures.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360141/image/large-9012db260b0ffe019d635576b6750ded.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360141">Despite the shifting market conditions, Italy continues to dominate the superyacht construction sector. In 2024, Italian shipyards accounted for 120 new yacht sales above 30 metres, more than double the combined total of all other competing nations. As of 1 January 2025, the country’s shipyards held 371 projects in their order books, representing 53 percent of the global backlog.Notably, Italian projects are also growing in scale.
