Asia Superyacht Rendezvous 2010

As the Superyachting world casts attention on Asia as the world’s next superyacht playground, preparations are underway for the largest gathering on superyachts in Asia - the 10th year celebration of the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous in Phuket, Thailand, the “Mediterranean of the East”.

The whole of the superyacht world is looking to Asia as the next great cruising ground and organisers are seeing a steady growth of yachts in the region. As more superyachts are attracted to the region and to the fun and festive event, an invitation is extended by the organiser to power and sail vessels over 30 meters LOA (100’ in length) to come aboard held during the festive Christmas holidays, December 16-18, 2010.

Good news for many superyacht captains and owners the expansion of the event, moving from two days to three days. For the first time there will be two days of racing events - with sailing vessels accompanied by attending motor yachts. Organisers Gordon Fernandes, GM of Asia Pacific Superyachts and Charlie Dwyer, Captain of the Yannekee Too, comment, “It’s not often that you get motor boat owners mixing with sail boat owners! The three days will be filled with camaraderie and fun, starting with the opening sunset cocktail party aboard the beautiful sailing yacht, Silolona”.

Following the first race running south to north from Nai Harn Bay to Surin Bay December 17th, accompanied by the mammoth motor vessels, guests will gather for the popular “Challenge” team boat-building and racing contest. Commented one of the mega yacht captains, Rob Hossack of the 46 meter superyacht, Maverick, “This is a great time. Not only do we enjoy the camaraderie of a superior party, the “Challenge” brings our crews together in an original competition that seems to have a new twist each year, while pitting the wits of the crew in working together as boat builders.”

Participating last year were superyacht and sponsor teams from: S/Y Yannekee Too; M/Y Archimedes; S/Y Naos; S/Y Sililona; S/Y Obsessions II; S/Y Thalia; The Chedi; M/Y Vie Sans Soucis; Jumeirah Private Island; M/Y Maverick; M/Y Braveheart; and S/Y Bristolian.

The superyacht event continues to grow due to the generosity of the event sponsors, such as Host Hotel, The Chedi. Returning for the 10th year, Principal Sponsor Feadship comments they are convinced there is, “a great potential for yachting in the area, and for Phuket in particular, as a yacht hub”. First-time co-sponsors Merle Wood & Associates and Rolling Stock join Asia Pacific Superyachts, along with new Media Partner, Boat International Media, focusing worldwide attention on the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous.

Following the second sailing event, December 18th, is a VIP cocktail party aboard a superyacht. As the sun sets crews come ashore for the festive ‘Crew Beach BBQ’ party while owners, captains and guests segue to the ‘Boat International VIP Reception & Gala Dinner’. Meeting one last time, new friendships are forged as old ones renewed, with many planning to meet again the following year in Phuket, Thailand for the Asia Superyacht Rendezvous.
