A world leading manufacturer of yacht coatings, Awlgrip is nearing completion of an exciting product development programme that will bring a range of special effect finishes to the yacht market.
Awlgrip reports on its latest approach:
"Bringing new products to the market that have already been tried and tested can be a challenge for any manufacturer. In the paint field, the stakes are high and the challenge is great. Ordinarily, products developed for non-yacht applications require extensive modification to make them properly suited to the particular requirements that arise in superyacht yards. For this project, a different approach was adopted. In less than 18 months, we were able to work with leading application experts from across the superyacht industry to leverage their experience and harness the technology that is already available to us within the wider AkzoNobel group.
"During the programme, Awlgrip development chemists consulted with our field team and customers to identify their key requirements when choosing a special effect finish. They also established which technologies they had already tried and their views on their effectiveness. The project team employed this learning to fully integrate new components within the standard Awlgrip topcoat system, creating the special effect finish," says Chris Toole, Global Senior Product Manager, Awlgrip.
The latest product development will enable delivery of new special effect finishes into the market much quicker than with the traditional product development cycle. The approach further benefits from the already well-established track record of the Awlgrip brand as well as the warranty and performance expected from Awlgrip products. The supply logistics are currently being finalised and full details of the new system will be released shortly.
