In terms of maintenance and servicing, it also has good repairability.” Polyurethane topcoats are considered a safe choice for both small and large yachts and are well established on the market. The Alexseal Premium Topcoat 501 product line is available in a wide range of solid colours and individual custom colours and can adjust to the desired processing conditions. The system can be applied with a spray gun and is also rollable.High Solid Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC)The crucial advantage of the Base Coat /Clear Coat (BC/CC) system lies in the last, extra layer – the clear coat. "The application of this system is clearly in the hands of experienced painters and is suitable for special requirements," Thomas explained. The BC/CC build has the greatest Hiding Power and exceptional Depth of Image (DOI) of all three systems. The clear coat provides excellent protection and outstanding durability making it appealing to superyacht owners. Our Base Coat/Clear Coat is also frequently used in the professional sailing yacht sector. The acrylic topcoat has a faster drying time, offering less surface area for dirt particles to adhere to the still-wet paint film. This topcoat is also slightly softer than a Polyurethane or BC/CC system, allowing for a very good polishability once dried. “With Acrylic Topcoat X, we have a product on the market for a good two years that plays on the level of the other two systems in terms of gloss level – even surpassing them in some cases," commented Thomas. Acrylic Topcoat X is frequently used in Europe as well, specifically Italy, Greece, and Turkey, with an excellent foothold in the US with smaller yacht users. The refit and painting conditions in these locations are also not necessarily cleanroom quality, and sea winds create particles in the air that could harm the wet paint. Over the past decade we have built a comprehensive support structure in-house which encompasses marketing, business intelligence, tech development, PR and events, in-house video production (which almost no one else has), and strategic partnerships. These marketing teams consist of more than 30 people on staff, and include an intelligence team dedicated to data research. I really don’t know of any other brokerage firm that has invested so much in these categories, and it has definitely helped us to differentiate ourselves with our clients and win more and more of our competitor’s business.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/35342/image/large-bdee32c15b4a067e6002354accf83f97.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/35342">The brokerage's acquisition in 2021 by industry titan <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1312" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MarineMax (Company)">MarineMax</a> has certainly given the company the financial firepower to make this transition more quickly, but there was always a focus on data analytics and marketing, even prior to the takeover. “Many brokerage houses have just one or two employees who provide their yachting data, but it's generally a slow and outdated manual process that is rarely capable of finding the right yachts first – something which is one of the most important roles expected of a broke by their clientele. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> however, we have our ‘Deep Data department’ that sources data from all over the world through various custom developed applications as well as significant human resources, making sure our brokers have the most accurate and acute information in the industry, as well as having it first.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219126/image/large-206b550a22422538d353d3e1d1b64044.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219126">“If you strip it down to its basic tenets, the world of yacht broking is an information and facilitation business,” says Ziriakus. “The value of data within the yachting industry can be pivotal to a company’s success.” This could not have been more evident than in recent years, when major market high, such as 2021 and early 2022, saw scares supply and very few superyachts of pedigree were hitting the market. N&amp;J’s investment in data has enabled them to ride the sector wave with massive success, including reporting recently that its brokers sold 36% more yachts on average per broker than its closest competitor in 2022, selling a yacht almost every 48 hours during 2022.When <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/526" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northrop and Johnson (Company)">N&amp;J</a> isn't in the news for its extensive catalogue of sales, the brokerage house is stealing the limelight with partnership after partnership, and for Ziriakus this has also been one of the greatest growth assets for the company. “The strategic partnerships team has been working hard to build deep, multi-year partnerships with other brands that go far beyond simply sharing a logo or sponsoring events. It has truly been a business development drive to build powerful PR campaigns, events and activations that work directly with UHNW client segments. Content creation is a leading strategy for the brand, and it employs not just one but five videographers and editors who shoot high end productions of yachts all over the world. While this isn’t in and of itself particularly revolutionary, the work the production team does with former broker David Seal is.Seal runs a YouTube channel for the company called Yachts for Sale, and shoots video content for the brokerage firm. The true value lies in the business development opportunities that arise from coverage on such a popular channel. “These infotainment-style videos are a fantastic asset,” explains Ziriakus, “not only because we create cool and interesting content, but because we visit shipyards, talk to clients and experts, and that content directly brings in leads to both the brokerage and the charter departments. Patrick Marine: How a boutique yacht company cornered the market and built a strong global presence

There is a deft art to creating bespoke one-of-a-kind tenders, especially as they come in such a variety of shapes and sizes. The demands placed on these smaller vessels are just as high as those of the motherships – in some instances, even more. Versatility is fed directly into their DNA and no builder knows this better than the Australia-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal International</a>.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal International</a> was founded in 1982 and has delivered more than 75 fully custom tenders to world’s largest motor yachts. Topaz) pitched the project. The 11.25-metre Open Sports limousine tender elegantly skims across the water with grace and comfort, thanks to her ingeniously engineered hull and two punchy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> D6 400 horsepower diesel engines.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> furnished the custom Topaz Convertible with a cream, rounded settee that wraps a heavily varnished coffee table. Befit for a tender belonging to such an outstanding mothership, the Topaz Convertible is suave, sophisticated and a point of pride for owner and guests to embark from when perusing the treasures onland. Her crowning feature though is undoubtedly her hardtop convertible roof – a world’s first for a tender of this size – which allows for usage in any weather condition. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256232/image/large-8988d9422027cffa438b371dd20a6e71.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256232">19m Octopus Dive TenderAt 18.8-metres the custom-built Octopus Dive Tender is one of the largest power boats to complement a superyacht. With a penchant for speed and a requirement to reach some of the most remote and daring dive locations in the world, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had a challenge. A challenge that a ready-made solution could never cater to. The marketplace for ready-made solutions might be thriving, but it’s not perfect.Australia’s resident designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/98" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sam Sorgiovanni Designs P/L (Company)">Sam Sorgiovanni</a> oversaw her design – and most definitely delivered. The Octopus Dive Tender is refined, lavish and brimming with amenities expected on a yacht, not a tender. She can carry as many as 10 guests, who can kick back in utmost comfort in her plush saloon, and she has a generous aft deck for seamless access to the water. Thanks to twin <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> engines, the Octopus Dive Tender can reach speeds in excess of 40 knots.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256228/image/large-e97a5f6fe4b00aa7785de9dd3a193030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256228">10m Secret Limousine&nbsp;Many superyachts have a low tender transom garage, which is typically used to store a RIB or water toys. But the space can also be utilised for a more luxurious limousine tender – you just have to be clever. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> had to keep the tender’s height under two metres, which makes an enclosed aft normally impossible. To counter this, an electronically operated hardtop was fitted so once out the garage the shell roof can be opened to welcome the owner and guests onboard.The 9.8-metre Secret Limousine tender is fitted with twin D4 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> diesel engines that deliver a top speed of 48 knots. She’s also been fitted with bright red leather for the large settees that replicate the colour scheme of the owner’s Ferrari. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256231/image/large-cbb7586372777224a62bd10c29dbf6d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256231">12m Topaz CatamaranSitting alongside the Topaz Convertible onboard the 147.25-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="A+147.25m (483'1&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2012">A+</a> (ex. Topaz), is a 12-metre custom-built Cargo Catamaran. This tender was commissioned to serve the yacht, acting as a private taxi, a dive platform and the vessel to supply fuel and cargo to and from shore. To facilitate dive expeditions, the Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a modular unit fitted to the front deck with an 18+ dive bottle capacity. Her bow was also customised to aid guests with seamless sea access.&nbsp;The 12-metre Topaz Catamaran is equipped with a pair of D6 <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> Diesels coupled to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5769" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hamilton Jet (Company)">Hamilton</a> HJ 292 water jets that deliver a top speed of 35 knots. She’s incredibly versatile and is handy for fishing excursions, equipped with all necessary paraphernalia. Being fitted with a 400-kilo capacity hydraulic davit crane, she’s ideal for crew use when they need to haul heavier cargo or retrieve Jet Skis and water toys. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> also designed her with a retractable bimini and linear activated helm hardtop, so she can snuggly fit into smaller garages.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/256222/image/large-1b8e4eab43ef13f46c86d155e668f7c8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/256222"> Vikal SP Range – 8M RIBThe 8-metre custom SP RIB features a hard ‘D’ collar fender and has a very generous deck area that can accommodate as many as 12 guests. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4218" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vikal International (Company)">Vikal</a> typically equips the 8-metre RIB with a single <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5350" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Volvo Penta (Company)">Volvo</a> D4 320 horsepower turbo diesel engine, coupled to a Hamilton HJ 274 waterjet, which delivers a top speed of 35 knots. With the help of a friend, he sailed it to Nova Scotia for the summer.After a couple of years, Bob left college to focus on his passion. He built a 38-foot schooner and sailed it from New York to Baltimore, where he took a job at the Owens Boatyard, advancing quickly through the ranks to become foreman. Eventually returning to the New York area, he worked at the Edgar Johns Shipyard in Rye and Minnefords in City Island, building minesweepers designed to detonate underwater mines during World War II. Bob soon joined the effort himself, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in the early 1940s.&nbsp;During 1947, shortly after returning from the Navy, the young boatbuilder established Robert E. Derecktor, Inc. on Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck, New York. Surrounding himself with talented employees who would continue to grow along with the company, over the years he expanded the yard, following the ebbs and flows of the boatbuilding business — transitioning from wood to aluminium, from cruising boats to race boats, from sail to power, then to larger yachts and commercial boats.Today, four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/36" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Derecktor Shipyards (Company)">Derecktor</a>’s facilities span the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S. from Maine to South Florida, offering vessel owners and operators everything from marina space to superyacht construction. Derecktor Shipyards: Born in the USA

Peter Wilson is co-founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>, one of the industry’s leading yacht construction and management firms. Originally from the UK, he settled in Newport, USA, in the late 1980s and set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> with business partner Nigel Ingram. Outside of work, Peter enjoys cycling, sailing, motorbiking, photography and tending to his beehives.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261482/image/large-8f42f4d17c286aa23635d9c9afd0624b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261482">How did you and Nigel meet and what sparked your decision to set up a company together?&nbsp;We met in Antigua in the ‘70s and became fast friends. In 1988 I was wrapping up an America’s Cup challenge and Nigel was finishing the build of a new yacht. We started chatting about what was next. As yachts were getting larger and more complicated, we felt clients needed an advocate to represent their best interests. We also believed there should be more discipline in terms of fiscal and time-related control imposed on the build process. And after 35 years it appears there was indeed a need!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/171475/image/large-def9b7fbcd7516e5756f79bc7fc282d0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/171475"> You’re a sailor and in the past&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;was best known for its sailing yacht projects, but you’re now taking on more motor yachts with brands like&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>. Was this a straightforward transition and how does your role change between sail and power?&nbsp;When one considers today’s sailing superyachts and their relative systems, they have more complications than the equivalent motor yachts. For example, both types of vessels have engines, generators, HVAC, AV/IT systems, cooking and domestic appliances, desalination and sewage treatment plants, and so on. But on a sailing yacht there are also masts, rigging, captive winches, booms, hydraulic furling and tensioning systems and appendages like lifting keels – all in a hull that is usually less voluminous than a motor yacht. So the transition from a technical standpoint is quite straightforward, although it should be noted that we have been doing motor yacht projects for many years and so they are not new territory for us.&nbsp;In terms of role differences, in the sailing yacht world there is more focus on the nuances of sailing performance, whereas on motor yachts the performance is well defined and based on engine kilowatts, propeller designs and, of course, the hull shape. The interiors, outfitting, finish and quality are equally important on every superyacht.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/180780/image/large-1604c001b0dc9b9c1caaa60d0e99d298.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/180780">What kind of decisions can you make on your own and which require the owner’s approval?&nbsp;This depends largely on the involvement and experience of the client. In many cases, we have clients that are knowledgeable and have had a string of yachts before. In those cases, the client is often closely involved and brings that experience to bear, and it can be a very collaborative affair. Where a client is perhaps building for the first time, they may need more guidance. In either case, we present them with the options available in a clear and concise manner when a decision is required and recommend the one we feel is the right choice. This gives the client the benefit of our experience and the requisite information on which to base an informed decision.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/92787/image/large-25fbaa062214a0955512eecbe552c80e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/92787">Do ‘involved’ owners make your job easier or more difficult?&nbsp;Having a client closely participate in the project typically makes it more memorable for them as they are really creating their vision. In turn, this makes it more enjoyable for the entire team. Designing and building a yacht is a terrific endeavour and may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so we strive to make it a rewarding experience for the client. We have developed great friendships with many of our clients that outlast the build process. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/68864/image/large-d01918c154c9386a1eba29b93edea26b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/68864"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a>&nbsp;offers yacht construction and management services. Does it make more sense if the same agency does both?&nbsp;When we started <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> in 1988, we didn’t have a yacht management division. However, once we had a few yachts ‘under our belts’ it became abundantly clear that there was a requirement for post-construction support the and formalising that support in the form of a yacht management division was a service that yacht owners needed. As the vessel progresses from the build phase to the operational phase, having one company providing both services makes for a seamless transition. Not least because by that stage we have a long-standing relationship with the client, we know the vessel inside and out, we have all the data, drawings and manuals, and we know which design decisions were made and why.The rules and regulations surrounding vessel navigation and operation have also increased exponentially and the burden is such that captains and crew require shore-based support. Furthermore, the client benefits from the continuity <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/742" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MCM (Company)">MCM</a> offers; crew inevitably come and go, but we are the common thread and institutional knowledge about the yacht and the programme. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/75757/image/large-814590a2342fc3180dd4d70ca59bd2d7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/75757">Do you bring in your own preferred suppliers and/or subcontractors for new-build projects, or is that always up to the shipyard?&nbsp;To ensure there is no perceived conflict of interest, we remain fiercely independent. However, over many years of operation we’ve developed strong relationships with quality suppliers, manufacturers and vendors and can recommend those to the shipyard. We also have real-world experience as to how the equipment performs at sea. However, it is the shipyard that has overall responsibility for the construction process and provides the warranty, so they ultimately decide which suppliers and subcontractors are the best fit and those they prefer to work with. &nbsp;What would you change about the way we work in the superyacht industry?&nbsp;The elapsed time from the first conversation to the yacht being handed over can be many years. As an industry, we are always seeking ways to be more efficient and shorten the time required to build one of these masterpieces &nbsp;while maintaining the high quality standards expected. The other challenge is how to build yachts that can operate in an environmentally friendly way. Emissions are being lowered. We need to continue that trend to protect the marine environment we all so enjoy.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217714/image/large-e37cd890a97c5e166adce7d9d371918b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217714">Beyond the technical qualifications, what are the personal attributes needed to be a successful owner’s rep?&nbsp;On the personal side, attributes such as honesty, integrity, patience and respect. Being a good listener is also profoundly important. Other key qualities include staying focused, open-minded, nimble and the ability to adapt. Managing expectations is the most challenging aspect of the job. As these projects become larger and costlier, there are many facets to consider and with sometimes differing agendas, so the ability to develop a team with members sharing a common goal, is fundamental.&nbsp;Lastly, the experience of having been to sea in a multitude of yachts in wide-ranging conditions is enormously helpful. Built for the charter market, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/271" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonlight II91.4m (299'10&quot;)Neorion2005">Moonlight II</a> can accommodate up to 36 guests, who'll be taken care of by a crew of 30. In terms of performance, she is powered by twin&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1408" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Caterpillar Inc (Company)">Caterpillar</a> engines of 2,760 horsepower each, allowing her to reach a top speed of 17 knots and cover a transatlantic range of 5,000 nautical miles while cruising at 14 knots.

(Company)">Codecasa</a> Jet 2020 is the brainchild of Fulvio Codecasa, who called me to collaborate on his futuristic project.
