Singapore’s new downtown is set to come alive as sail boats pit wit and skills for the first time on the iconic Marina Bay to emerge champion in Bay Challenge, which will take place from 14th – 15th May 2011, in conjunction with Boat Asia 2011.
Race organiser, TMX Show Productions, is partnering the Singapore Sailing Federation (SSF) to bring this race to the Bay for the first time. The race is supported by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore, along with sponsors Keppel, M1 and Tissot.
Mr. Tan Wearn Haw, CEO, Singapore Sailing Federation said, “Singapore Sailing’s role is to inject vibrancy into the sailing scene and grow the sport. Making it a viable and self-sustaining ecosystem would be a testament to the value proposition of sailing. So we are happy to sanction the upcoming Bay Challenge and excited to grow Bay Challenge as a key sailing event for Singapore and the region with TMX.”
Aiming to attract at least 10,000 spectators over two days, Bay Challenge will be set against Marina Bay’s spectacular skyline which includes Marina Bay Sands, The Arts Science Museum, The Promontory at Marina Bay and Marina Bay Financial Centre, Singapore’s single largest integrated mixed-use development and leading business address. Bay Challenge is envisioned to be a stepping stone to introduce a broader nautical lifestyle to a larger audience. Mr. Herman Ho, Managing Director of TMX Show Productions Pte Ltd, commented, “We are truly excited about bringing sailing into Marina Bay, Singapore’s major business, residential and recreational hub. Through the BAY Challenge, we hope to encourage Singaporeans to embrace sailing not just as a sport, but as a lifestyle, and at the same time position Singapore on the regional sailing map.”
Presenting sponsor, Tissot, sees Bay Challenge as the perfect platform to align their brand’s commitment to making excellence assessible. “Bay Challenge looks set to make an indelible positive impact on developing Singapore’s sailing scene. As one of the most innovative watchmakers and a champion of multi-discipline international sporting championships, Tissot’s partnership with Singapore’s first city sailing match race reinforces our innovation leadership and dedication to core values of performance, precision and setting new standards,” said Suzanti Yeo, Vice President, Tissot Singapore.
The Bay Challenge will see 16 regional teams of three-crew members competing in high performance Laser Bahias in a match race format. Two boats will be locked in a one-on-one battle around a two-lap course. Lasting a short but intense 12 minutes, each match will see the two contesting teams jostle for pole position and pitting their tactical and speed skills against each other. The resulting champion team will walk away with the Challenge trophy and will also have the honour of being crowned the winner of the first-ever Bay Challenge.
Spectators at the Bay Challenge at Marina Bay can also visit Boat Asia 2011. Already in its 19th edition, Boat Asia is Asia’s largest and longest running boat show with a stellar showcase of sleek sailing yachts, luxurious powerboats and prestigious lifestyle brands.
