In September of this year, the Italian design firm <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1181" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydro Tec (Company)">Hydro Tec</a> unveiled its new approach Integrating and implementing its existing approach with the new design processes, with the announcement that it would be dividing its expertise between three business units and expanding its capabilities to include the first phases of physical construction work. We sat down with Founder and Owner Sergio Cutolo and Davide Minieri, Managing Director, to get a deeper understanding of how this evolution will benefit the full scope of the studio’s clients.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296217/image/large-9630c26a6aaa6c0a74975473b691ba45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296217">Davide Minieri explains, “Following our 25th anniversary in 2020, we have been reviewing the perception of the studio and realised that, while design is at the core of our work, we have been more closely perceived with our engineering expertise. In talking with different players from across the industry, we discovered that many struggle to control the timelines and project costs due to the number of individual stakeholders contributing to one project, combined with the sheer number of projects being undertaken at the same time. This is a common struggle and often becomes unmanageable for many businesses, so we looked at our own portfolio to see how we could expand our offering and offer yards a more streamlined proposition.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/296215/image/large-1975de5c1e358a7ea009a15f3f0e222d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/296215">While the design team followed the complete build to delivery, the studio previously provided the design and the description of how the systems and yacht were designed, but were not involved in the construction itself. Believing that a more centralised and integrated approach would benefit the full spectrum of owners, shipyards and the projects themselves, Hydro Tec made the decision to strategically divide its business into three unique and specialised units.Davide explains, “We never previously delved into the specifics of preparing the assembly booklet, but the new company is able to manage these projects from beginning to end.” While the company has always completed naval architecture and engineering for its projects, it has now gone one step further by translating the 3D design models into 2D formats for the exact stencils of the steel cutting machines. In Italy, most of the steel for the superyacht sector is produced and cut by Baglietto S.R.L, the marine steel manufacturer situated to the north of Genoa, just 50 minutes from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1181" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydro Tec (Company)">Hydro Tec</a>’s headquarters. Hydro Tec reached out to the manufacturer to find out how they could work together to streamline the cutting process and improve the efficiency of existing structures. Working under the single brand of Hydro Tec will be the design, naval architecture and detail engineering units, that can work either individually or simultaneously. The three distinctive <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1181" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hydro Tec (Company)">Hydro Tec</a> business units are focused on their respective fields, yet all communicating together for a single, integrated and comprehensive range of services, will benefit all stakeholders throughout the entire ‘chain’, from shipyard to client.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294013/image/large-fc41f06b08971f8ef0afabe4bc637f79.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294013">Sergio adds, “Instead of consorting with the many players required for such complex projects, we can now act as a single point of contact, pooling our talent, knowledge and expertise while simultaneously reducing risks, costs and lead times for any new-build project, beneficial for all stakeholders.”A new studio, named 'Yacht Engineering' was just opened in Genoa to focus specifically on detail engineering. RMK Yachts has begun construction of a new 70,000-sqm shipyard in Turkey, set to boost superyacht production capacity by 2027.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida has dismissed the entire complaint brought by Export Yacht Sales (Brill Maritime), which alleged that Boats Group illegally monopolised the US online boat-listing market through YachtWorld, Boat Trader and boats.com.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355047/image/large-0bd8f332392990f5a08cac6ea37b81d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355047">The lawsuit was filed on 14 August 2025, with Brill Maritime alleging that Boats Group controlled approximately 75 percent of the market for listing and marketing recreational boats and used subscription agreements that either bar or discourage brokers and dealers from listing vessels on rival platforms.Read more: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/64073" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="US boat dealers bring antitrust class action against Boats Group (2025-08-21 13:00:00 +0200)">US boat dealers bring antitrust class action against Boats Group</a><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355053/image/large-d4b378b0bbe9bf56a1926a2d570b4fd5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355053">According to Brill Maritime, competing platforms had been unable to achieve the scale or inventory to grow their services effectively, leaving brokers and dealers with limited options.The court found that Brill Maritime had plausibly alleged that the relevant market could be defined as an online boat listing and marketing service in the United States and that Boat Group may possess monopoly power in that market.&nbsp;Brill Maritime also alleged that Boat’s Group claimed 75 percent of the global share, reasonably supporting an inference that it has a dominant position in the US market. As a result of this, the judge did not dismiss the case because Boats Group lacks market power.However, the judge said that Brill Maritime had failed to show that Boats Group engaged in illegal anticompetitive conduct and under US antitrust law, being a monopoly is not illegal by itself.The court repeatedly emphasised that monopoly power is legal, but using that power through anticompetitive behaviour to exclude rivals is illegal.&nbsp;The judge found that Brill Maritime’s three main allegations were insufficient including that Boats Group became dominant by acquiring competitors such as YachtWorld.com, boats.com and YachtCloser.com.The judge said that acquiring competitors is not necessarily illegal and that Brill Maritime had not explained how these acquisitions had harmed competition. The complaint had described the acquisitions as “strategic” suggesting it was more of a successful business move than illegal conduct. The judge explained that Brill Maritime had shown that Boats Group bought competitors, but not that these acquisitions were unlawful. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355039/image/large-513a0ee840e10e5371f647093bba58d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355039">Brill Maritime also claimed that Boats Group's subscription agreements stoped brokers from listing boats elsewhere. The judge examined the contract language and concluded that the provision merely prevented brokers from implying that a YachtWorld or Boats Group listing originated somewhere else. He therefore concluded that you can advertise on YachtWorld and on other sites and the contract simply prevented you from pretending a Boats Group listing came from another platform, meaning the clause is not an exclusive dealing arrangement.Finally, Brill Maritime argued that Boats Group had dramatically increased its prices. The judge responded that high prices alone are not an antitrust violation. The court cited multiple precedents saying a legal monopolist is generally allowed to charge whatever prices it wants. To prove monopolisation, Brill Maritime needed to show that the higher prices resulted from illegal exclusionary conduct.In conclusion, the judge accepted that Boats Group may hold monopoly power in the US online boat-listing market, but ruled that the plaintiffs failed to show that Boats Group acquired or maintained that position through illegal anticompetitive conduct.United States District Judge, Roy K. Altman dismissed the complaint without prejudice, meaning the plaintiff is able to resubmit an amended complaint, with a deadline of 30 June 2026.&nbsp;The lawsuit also contained claims under Florida law, with the federal court declining to hear the state claims as the federal antitrust claims were dismissed.
