Enrico Chhibber speaks with Japan-based yachting experts to explore recent regulatory reforms and infrastructure developments that are gradually positioning Japan as a more accessible and appealing destination for superyachts. When it comes to attractive superyacht destinations in Asia, Thailand has traditionally taken the spotlight. Japan, meanwhile, has remained a lesser-known cruising ground and has often been viewed as logistically challenging. Today, however, that narrative is changing, as Japan begins to reposition itself on the global yachting map. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370701/image/large-fccdf0ce93277bda47184d5f87855515.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370701">The Japanese archipelago, comprising more than 14,000 islands and stretching over 34,000 kilometres of coastline, spans approximately 3,000 kilometres from north to south. With climates ranging from the snowy winters of Hokkaido to the subtropical warmth of Okinawa, the country offers year-round cruising opportunities and a broad range of geographical and cultural experiences.Yet despite these natural advantages, Japan has not historically appealed to the international superyacht community. Regulatory complexities and limited marina infrastructure for larger vessels have, until recently, presented notable hurdles to its development as a cruising destination. This landscape is now beginning to evolve. Since 2021, a series of regulatory reforms have made it easier for privately registered, foreign-flagged yachts to enter and cruise Japanese waters.Further momentum followed in December 2024 with the announcement of Superyacht Base Kobe Marina, which is currently under construction, with a full yacht service opening in 2026 and a full opening with surrounding infrastructure taking place in 2027. The project is intended to help address longstanding infrastructural limitations and support Japan’s efforts to attract more superyacht tourism.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/370696/image/large-5ef3ac54fac761e21641b06208086062.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/370696"> Marina infrastructure development in JapanAlthough Japan’s general maritime infrastructure is well developed, facilities specifically designed for superyachts remain limited. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/935" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nigel Beatty, United Kingdom (Person)">Nigel Beatty,</a> yacht broker at YACHTZOO and Chairman of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, observed that while the country is well-equipped overall, it lacks dedicated infrastructure tailored to the operational needs of larger yachts. “Infrastructure is brilliant in Japan, but if you're talking about purely superyacht infrastructure, then we are lacking a little bit,” he said.In most cases, visiting yachts cruise along the coast, anchoring near beaches or making brief stops at town piers. According to Beatty, this pattern highlights the need for more structured superyacht hubs and ports where large yachts can access services such as mooring, refuelling, provisioning, and guest handling. “When you go cruising, you anchor or tie up at a town pier for a night, then move on,” he explained. “But you also need hubs, places where yachts can come in and operate with proper support.”Some capacity does exist. A marina in Fukuoka, for example, can currently host a small number of larger vessels. However, the most significant development is taking place in Kobe, where a new marina is under construction. Announced in late 2024, Superyacht Base Kobe Marina is being developed to accommodate yachts up to 80-metres in length for stern to dockage and any size for alongside dockage. Just in the last few weeks the facility has accommodated a 70-metre and a 117-metre. Beatty noted that the basin is roughly half the size of Port Hercule in Monaco.Yukio Shintani of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1132" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Creation Marine (Company)">Creation Marine</a>, a lead investor who has played a role in coordinating stakeholders for the Kobe project, confirmed the marina is being established as a destination facility and is expected to open within two years. Once complete, it will serve as one of the first ports in Japan specifically designed to support visiting superyachts at scale.While Japan does not yet offer the density of dedicated infrastructure found in more established superyacht destinations, ongoing developments suggest a gradual shift toward greater accessibility and operational support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104219/image/large-c94403a78cad4fa52830c3e4d2898030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104219"> Before the Change: Superyacht regulations in Japan prior to 2021 Although foreign-flagged superyachts were technically permitted to enter and cruise in Japan before 2021, a combination of bureaucratic complexity and limited facilities made the country a difficult destination to navigate. As Nigel Beatty noted, “Whether commercially or privately registered, Japan never really drew a strong distinction between yacht types. Superyachts have technically been able to visit Japan for quite some time. The issue was the bureaucracy involved. While we used to manage it, the process was labour-intensive, and that translated into high costs for visiting yachts.”Japan did offer a relative advantage for crew from visa waiver countries. “There have always been positive aspects to cruising in Japan,” Beatty added. “For example, if you were from a visa waiver country, such as those in Europe or North America, you could enter Japan by yacht and remain for up to 90 days as a tourist, even as crew.”However, crew from non-waiver countries such as South Africa, India, and the Philippines, who represent a significant portion of the global yachting workforce, faced more complications. These individuals were required either to obtain a visa in advance or rely on a short-term crew pass valid for just 14 days. “Renewing it involved leaving the country and re-applying at an immigration office,” Beatty said. “Approval often depended on the discretion of the local immigration office, which made the process inconsistent and inefficient.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)"></a><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Person/4301" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kenta Inaba, Japan (Person)">Kenta Inaba</a>, President and Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6572" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Super Yacht Logistics Japan (Company)">Super Yacht Logistics</a>, described how procedural rigidity once defined the experience for visiting yachts. “In the past, every time a yacht entered Japan, we had to process customs, immigration and quarantine, not just on arrival but again at each subsequent port,” he explained. “When I started in this business, I had to submit a full list of every port the yacht was planning to visit. But yachts don’t follow fixed routes like commercial vessels. Their movements are often dictated by weather and anchorage conditions, which makes rigid planning difficult.”Even minor navigational changes could create problems. “If a yacht was anchored and the wind shifted, they might need to move to another part of the bay. But if that area wasn’t listed in the original plan, it became an issue,” Inaba said. “Even bringing something as simple as a bottle of beer back onboard required paperwork.” The system, he added, was not designed with yachts in mind. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298475/image/large-124d7d95e2299e38d8fd95f9b6b90929.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298475">Turning Point: The 2021 regulatory reformsRegulatory changes introduced in 2021 significantly altered how Japan manages visiting superyachts. Previously constrained by complex procedures, foreign-flagged vessels now benefit from a more streamlined regulatory environment. “Much of that red tape has now been removed,” Beatty said.One of the most significant adjustments was the introduction of the Naikosen (similar to a cruising permit). After completing initial customs, immigration and quarantine procedures, yachts can apply for the permit, which, along with a blanket Closed Port Permit, removes the requirement to file repeated clearances at each domestic port. “Yachts used to be required to declare every intended stop in advance, which was completely impractical,” Inaba said. “Now, they have the flexibility to change course depending on conditions.”One of the more favourable regulations that was always in place in Japan is that foreign registered vessels remain indefinitely in Japan allowing for longer and more adaptable cruising schedules and possibly basing themselves in the country long term. Changes to crew entry procedures have addressed previous constraints. The introduction of the Multiple Landing Permit, or “Crew Pass,” allows foreign crew to remain in Japan for the duration of the yacht’s stay; and even up to one year. This replaces the former 14-day restriction that often-required multiple renewals and placed a disproportionate burden on those from non-waiver countries. The Crew Pass allows crew ashore in the local areas that the yacht will be for yacht business, shopping or sightseeing.Crew from countries covered by Japan’s visa waiver programme continue to benefit from 90-day tourist access, allowing for greater flexibility to travel ashore or explore the length while the vessel is in port.Together, these updates have reduced many of the operational constraints that previously discouraged superyacht visits. Japan is now better aligned with international practices and more accessible to a global yachting audience; and in some areas have more favourable regulations than well-established yachting countrie<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/298430/image/large-ae231a89fb0e19e109ca66eda85be1ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/298430">Looking AheadJapan’s regulatory progress in recent years has laid important groundwork, but further improvements will be necessary to support charter activity. In particular, foreign-flagged, commercially registered yachts still face regulatory hurdles when seeking to operate charters in Japanese waters. Shintani acknowledged this ongoing challenge. “I want to try to create everything for the foreign-flagged yacht to charter. This is our mission.”While Japanese-flagged yachts can operate commercially, the charter process for foreign-flagged vessels remains undecided, however moves are afoot to make a rule for foreign charter yachts with a charter contract already developed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3581" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Dickinson Llp (Company)">Hill Dickinson</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7320" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association (Company)">Asia Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, which navigates specific Japanese regulations. The solution to this issue will be an important next step in positioning Japan as a competitive superyacht destination in the Asia-Pacific region. A new chapter for Asia: Japan’s rise as a cruising destination

Japan is emerging as Asia’s newest superyacht destination, driven by regulatory reform and new marina infrastructure including Superyacht Base Kobe. 

A new streamlined administrative process has been launched to allow foreign yachts to sail freely between Abu Dhabi and Dubai from January 2026. The new protocol is designed to streamline yacht movement and elevate the UAE’s yachting experience. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/381143/image/large-5a93b42afa19898a8603a00bee753194.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/381143">The streamlined system removes duplicate clearance procedures, allowing foreign-flagged yachts to move between the two emirates with a single recognised sailing permit. For the first time, sailing permits issued by either Abu Dhabi or Dubai will be honoured across both emirates, eliminating the need for repeated approvals or local entry and exit processing, which will reduce waiting times, documentation requests, and administrative costs as a mutually recognised permit issued by either emirate will grant seamless passage between the two cruising hubs.Central to the change is a new digital information bridge powered by the Early Inquiry System. Building on its growth as a global yachting hub, Dubai is adopting a more strategic and business-oriented approach to developing its maritime sector as part of its wider economic objectives. Through regulatory reform, targeted infrastructure investment and large-scale environmental initiatives, the city sees yachting not only as a lifestyle draw, but also as a catalyst for long-term business growth, innovation and inward investment.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371503/image/large-62250e7ac28e232f2c5e8db6051ee892.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371503">Positioning Dubai for investmentDubai’s transformation from a modest trading port to a global hub for trade, tourism and maritime activity reflects its success in combining clear policy direction with strong public-private collaboration.&nbsp;Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit in May 2025, Issam Kazim, CEO of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6865" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dubai Tourism (Company)">Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM)</a>, part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), explained how the city has &nbsp;focused on building its infrastructure and attracting tourists from around the world. He detailed how the implementation of its diversification strategy had helped Dubai open the market quickly in the post-Covid era. More importantly, Dubai has become not just a repeat destination for many, it is now becoming home for people relocating family offices and headquarters.At the core of this proposition are Dubai’s favourable business climate and coordinated approach to development. In 2024, the emirate ranked as the world’s leading destination for Greenfield foreign direct investment (FDI) for the fourth consecutive year, according to Financial Times Ltd.’s fDi Markets, attracting 52.3 billion dirhams ($14.25 billion) in estimated FDI capital alone. This momentum aligns with the long-term goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy by 2033 and further consolidate its position as a leading global destination for business and leisure.Close cooperation between government and industry has been key to this progress. Regular consultation ensures infrastructure, regulations and sustainability measures align with investor expectations. As Kazim noted, truly understanding the industry and maintaining strong private-public sector partnerships have been “the backbone of Dubai’s success and will continue to be so going forward”.Public investment in major assets, such as the expansion of Nakheel Marinas and the redevelopment of Mina Rashid, is matched by private sector services ranging from maintenance and refit to technical support.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/371506/image/large-e25bec56d4382b9c999e4cae8b373e50.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/371506">Dubai’s appeal for yacht owners and marine businesses is also shaped by ease of access and strong connectivity. Flagship airlines and private aviation links connect the city to major markets, an advantage for high-net-worth individuals in Asia. With more than 5,000 berths across 22 marinas, Dubai offers capacity and technical services that rival long-established yachting centres. Kazim noted that this growth is clear in the increasing number of yachts and superyachts relocating to Dubai, if not permanently then for part of the year, to benefit from Dubai’s winter climate and supporting infrastructure.Visa policies and streamlined regulations further strengthen Dubai’s competitive position. Programmes such as the Golden Visa, multi-entry visas and simplified superyacht registration make it easier for owners and operators to establish a long-term base. Foreign-flagged yachts are exempt from VAT and customs duties under certain permits, while the proposed GCC Unified Visa could expand regional cruising opportunities.Complementing its business environment is a diverse destination offering. Luxury hotels, fine dining, cultural attractions and outdoor activities add to Dubai’s appeal for owners and family offices. Developed by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) in collaboration with the Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA), the programme spans 20 marinas and marina stations across the city. It is described as the region’s most extensive marina dining concept and supports the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33.Designed for yacht owners, crews and guests seeking short-term berthing, Dock &amp; Dine provides convenient access to a curated selection of restaurants, luxury hotels, cultural attractions and waterfront entertainment. Visitors can sail easily between different docks and dining venues, enjoying a diverse range of cuisines within a 45-minute to one-hour cruising radius.Key features include complimentary moorage at participating marinas, quick booking response times, direct coordination with restaurants for reservations, and dedicated dock tenders for smooth drop-offs and pick-ups. A unified regulatory framework ensures a consistent, straightforward experience across the city’s marinas.By harmonising marina regulations and enhancing operational processes, the city is making it easier for foreign-flagged vessels to arrive and ensuring guests enjoy streamlined access and world-class service.Making waterfront dining more accessible, the initiative supports Dubai’s appeal as a year-round destination, especially during the peak winter season when favourable weather and a vibrant events calendar attract a growing number of international visitors. Spanning 600 square kilometres of Dubai’s waters, the multi-faceted sustainability initiative is designed to enhance biodiversity, increase ecosystem resilience, and strengthen socio-economic prosperity and eco-tourism through its three main pillars: Marine Habitat Restoration, Marine Life Rehabilitation, and Marine Conservation Research.The first pillar, the Marine Habitat Restoration programme, will see a total of 20,000 purpose-built reef modules of various sizes and shapes deployed across the project area by 2027. The reef modules will help restore marine habitat, boost fish populations, and increase ecosystem resilience. Pillar two, Marine Life Rehabilitation, supports the growth of indigenous marine species and will focus on coral restoration in its pilot phase. An extended stay beneath Capri’s dramatic limestone cliffs was followed by a passage past Stromboli to Taormina in Sicily, and onwards to the Ionian Islands in Greece, with pauses at Zakynthos, Ithaka and Anti Paxos, before turning north to Montenegro and Croatia, where the voyage concluded in Dubrovnik.“It was probably the best of Italy, the best of the Ionian and the Croatian coast – all in one cruise,” the owner reflects. “We covered a huge amount of ground, but it never felt rushed. If the weather’s not great where we are anchored, we have the flexibility to move elsewhere quickly. If something looks promising on the chart, we make a detour. You’re not locked into a rigid itinerary.”This responsiveness, paired with a shallow draft and high cruising speed, allowed <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royale X49.9m (163'9&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2012">Royale X</a> to access small harbours and anchorages that many tri-deck yachts simply cannot reach. “We’ve taken her into places like Bonifacio, Portoferraio, Hvar – even backed her into Portofino. That’s a real experience, arriving at those spots by sea in a yacht of this size.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367659/image/large-8932eb38eb98815ce07278dc03827d06.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367659">Capable of speeds over 30 knots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royale X49.9m (163'9&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2012">Royale X</a> has been designed to make the most of every moment aboard. “We’re often travelling with limited time, just a few weeks, sometimes days. Being able to move quickly between locations changes the whole dynamic. From Monaco, you can be in Saint-Tropez in just over an hour, or dash across to Portofino for lunch. Importantly, this adjustment was made without removing the onboard gym, maintaining wellness facilities that are often the first to go on similar refits.“She’s not configured for large parties, we cruise as a family, usually just the five of us. But the layout works brilliantly. The cinema can be set up for guests, and we still have a proper gym. It’s balanced.”Noise and vibration levels are also notably low, even at speed, particularly with the new set of gyroscopic stabilisers. “We’ll often watch movies in the master at night while underway. You don’t notice the motion, it’s very smooth.”What the owner values most, however, is the sense of proximity to the water. “I’ve been on a lot of yachts where you feel quite detached – you’re up high, behind glass, away from the sea. This is different. You’re right there at the bow, low to the water, watching the coastline slip by.”The aft deck, too, offers wide views and clean sightlines, especially when manoeuvring in or out of port. “It’s a practical deck, but it’s also emotional – you feel the movement of the boat, the close link with the sea. That’s hard to find on larger yachts.”Though discreet by nature, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2951" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royale X49.9m (163'9&quot;)Overmarine Group SPA2012">Royale X</a> has earned quiet recognition among those who understand performance. The water surrounding the islands is considered sacred by the Guna people, making it impossible to legally search for the lost treasure. Now, the Guna Yala have decided to share this secret with the DBE-team.To understand why, we have to travel back to 2011 and 10,000 kilometres East. The Ocean X team discovered what is now known as the ‘Baltic Sea Anomaly’, a strange object sitting at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. To this day, no one knows exactly what it is or why it's there. That is, no one besides the Guna Yala. Although its thousands of kilometres away, the Guna Yala believe that the 'Baltic Sea Anomaly' is the interstellar vessel in which their ancestors descended from space. In 2012, a legal representative of the Guna Yala contacted Ocean X to get in touch about not just the anomaly, but also to explore the lost treasure of Maurepas.Besides the hindrance of the pandemic, the long timeline highlights how careful the Guna Yala people are in sharing the details of the lost treasure. After thirteen years of negotiations and conversations, legal agreements have been established, as well as enough trust between the DBE-team and the Guna Yala, to make this expedition a reality. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/368621/image/large-649fd34e338b413999d162950582b455.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/368621">What to expect&nbsp;During a seven-day stay onboard a catamaran or superyacht, guests will get to experience what it’s like to be a modern-day-explorer. Each day, guests dive and explore the sacred waters, sit in on evening lectures about the history of Maurepas, and have the rare chance to share a meal with the Guna Yala while listening to generation-old stories.&nbsp;After spending each day scanning the seabed with a magnetometer, salvage diving and observing the recovery process of the treasure, guests will get to enjoy gourmet meals, prepared by a 5-star chef, while relaxing in air conditioned spaces. &nbsp;Besides guests, the DBE-team and the superyacht's crew, the expedition will also be filmed and turned into a documentary by renowned filmmaker Mikael Flodell. At first glance, two insurance proposals may appear comparable. Similar limits, familiar terminology, and a competitive premium. Yet beneath the surface, the real differences emerge in structure, interpretation, and legal context.We asked ChatGPT to compare two superyacht insurance proposals. The outcome was structured, fast, and seemingly logical. But it also revealed a fundamental limitation: without true contextual understanding, critical differences remain unseen.This article highlights where that gap lies, and why specialist expertise remains essential.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396822/image/large-d04de7387341e559ee1e637ffd910549.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396822">1. Failure to understand layered policy structures and how clauses interact and override one anotherFor example, ChatGPT does not understand layered policy structures or how clauses interact and override one another.Policy wordings are built as layered legal frameworks, where clauses interact, override, or apply conditionally. AI tends to read them as isolated statements rather than as part of a structured system. Each insurer applies its own structure and hierarchy within the wording, often influenced by the applicable jurisdiction and its legal framework.For example, Policy A may state “worldwide navigation,” while Policy B specifies “worldwide excluding war zones.” ChatGPT may conclude that A offers broader coverage. In reality, Policy A may contain a separate war exclusion clause elsewhere in the wording that has the same, or even stricter, effect.2. Comparing apples with orangesOne operates on a Named Perils basis (only explicitly listed risks), the other on an All Risks basis (everything is covered unless excluded). The same term, but a completely different scope. ChatGPT sees “Hull &amp; Machinery” twice and concludes it is comparable, while the difference in coverage for a machinery breakdown or latent defect can amount to hundreds of thousands of euros.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396820/image/large-aa15c287e8791d5230e10db1b947032c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396820">3. Deductibles and sub-limits are overlookedAI tends to focus on the main coverage and premium, while the real differences are often found in the sub-limits. These include maximum payouts per incident for tenders, crew medical limits per person, and differing deductibles for machinery damage versus navigational incidents. Such details are typically scattered throughout the policy and are easily missed.It also struggles to recognise requirements for minimum underlying covers, such as mandatory national healthcare or other primary insurance arrangements. These elements can be critical to the validity and effectiveness of the coverage, yet are rarely identified without expert review.4. What is NOT included remains invisibleChatGPT can only compare what is written. It cannot identify what is missing. No cyber clause? AI will not flag it, because there is nothing to read. A specialist, however, knows what should be there and recognises the gap immediately.It also lacks the ability to properly assess how coverage is structured. Policies may appear comparable, while in reality one is based on an all risks foundation and another on named perils, or where insurers apply their own wording with a tailored definition of “all risks.” These structural differences ultimately determine what is and is not covered, yet remain largely invisible without expert interpretation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396862/image/large-15929412d50cbaf94d80733c90eaecca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396862">5. ConfidentialityOwners upload commercially sensitive documents to a public AI. Vessel values, cruising areas, crew details, claims history, all of this is shared with external servers. For high-profile owners, this represents a serious privacy risk.6. “Cheaper = better” biasAI tends to conclude that the lower-priced option offers “comparable coverage.” In marine insurance, however, a lower premium is almost always a reflection of reduced coverage, higher deductibles, or an insurer with a weaker claims reputation. It also lacks the ability to properly weigh subtle but critical differences in policy wording, such as a depreciation clause on masts and rigging, or to recognise exclusions that carry the same practical meaning but are phrased differently, such as a market value clause applied to running and standing rigging, which in practice can largely have the same effect.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396821/image/large-5911d8a80dbdc0631242e59608f5517a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396821">7. Jurisdiction and applicable lawThe governing law of a yacht policy determines how policy wording is interpreted at claim stage. The same wording can produce a very different outcome depending on the legal system behind it.This becomes particularly relevant in areas such as disclosure duties, warranties and gross negligence. Under some systems, sailing outside marked channels or ignoring a weather warning may already qualify as gross negligence, with a direct impact on the claim payment. Other systems apply a more proportional approach, or require a much higher degree of misconduct before cover can be reduced or declined.One policy may therefore respond very differently from another, despite similar wording and circumstances. This legal framework aimed to enable them to restructure, while continuing to operate under the supervision of an independent expert.Following this, on 20 April, the Court of Florence granted protective measures for a maximum period of four months, restricting creditors from initiating or continuing enforcement actions against the company’s assets, including vessels currently under construction.The court also confirmed that these protective measures extended to shipowners, which prevented them from terminating their contracts of yachts currently under construction during the proceedings.The Court of Florence has now issued an order upholding the appeals filed by five shipowners which prevented them terminating their contracts. The objective was a smooth, efficient ride across a transatlantic cruising envelope of close to 4,000 nautical miles – no small achievement for a vessel under 400 gross tons.“<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396218/image/large-f219694742e3fedf1f00ff2c0b5c4003.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396218">Meeting these requirements called for some clever engineering based on robust, proven solutions. Finite element analysis (FEA) guided the placement of bulkheads, stringers, and the keel to ensure structural integrity under long passages without compromising interior volume. The challenge was compounded by hybrid-assisted propulsion comprising twin 1,000-hp MAN diesel engines paired with electric motors and supported by a lithium-ion battery bank.The system integrated by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3869" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Eekels Technology BV (Company)">Eekels Technology</a> allows for flexible operational modes. Electric mode provides a few hours of silent propulsion at low speed, ideal for manoeuvring in harbours or environmentally sensitive zones. In diesel mode the electric motors can function as shaft generators to reduce fuel burn on extended passages. The electric motors also add redundancy for additional peace of mind far from home. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Royal Hakvoort</a> had direct experience of the latter: during sea trials of 61-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia61.0m (200'2&quot;)Royal Hakvoort Shipyard2024">Asia</a>, an electrical fault caused an engine shutdown, but the gearbox-mounted e-motors allowed the crew to manoeuvre safely away from an offshore wind farm.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396210/image/large-bfbd4613c1cb6d84c9fb37fa9b5d37a0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396210">The battle for spaceA signature feature of the yacht is the continuous ribbon of wraparound glazing on the main and bridge decks – 17 tonnes of it. The bulwarks are also glass and the hull windows incorporate a dot-fade pattern that blends with the white hull from a distance. Combined with the classic sheer line and bronze-metallic funnel, the green-tinted glass adds a touch of understated elegance that hints at an era that never quite existed – but should have. The wheelhouse windows are not full-height, but the aluminium surfaces beneath will be clad with glass and the same green reflective finish to create the visual effect of uninterrupted glass.&nbsp;Extensive glazing has a downside, however: heat. Solar load becomes a critical issue, especially for a yacht destined for hot climates. One option is to increase HVAC capacity, but a smarter one is to engineer better insulation. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Hakvoort</a> chose the latter. A two-year development programme with glass specialist Royal-Maritiem sought the ideal balance of solar control, privacy, clarity, structural strength, and colour uniformity. Each double-glazed laminated pane is filled with argon gas and coated with a low-emissivity metal film tuned to deliver the desired green tint. The result is a 50 precent reduction in heat transfer compared to conventional marine glass.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396219/image/large-043a6cfbb4c2ee18f77e9eca62c4d295.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396219">But heat is not the only issue. Full-height windows also eliminate the storage units and hidden cavities normally used to route ducting, wiring, and AC trunking, pushing the technical infrastructure inward. As a result, space became the defining constraint and the build team had to fight for every cubic centimetre. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/33" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hoek Design Naval Architects B.V. (Company)">Hoek Design</a> has deep experience of designing sailboats where space is always at a premium, but it was up to the shipyard to find ways to integrate complex systems into tight envelopes.“Nothing fitted, so we had to make it fit,” says Klaas, which could be the unofficial motto of the project. “By the time everything is installed, the engine room will be very full, but accessible and maintainable. Not cluttered – engineered.”The electrical switchboards span the full height of the engine from port to starboard across, an unavoidable result of the hybrid system. The engine room itself relies on seawater-fed heat exchangers because there wasn’t room for conventional air-cooling systems. The pool doubles as a tender bay with a dump tank and its own dedicated crane compartment that closes flush with the teak deck. Under the sunbed on the foredeck is a two-storey garage for the crew tender and a pair of PWCs. Add the elevator, wider side decks and interior passages sized for wheelchair access, and every available every void had to serve a purpose.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396209/image/large-486995c89e482f3860ee5f1204771fb6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396209">Hidden in plain sightThe metallic bronze faux funnel is more than a charming styling cue; it also highlights the kind of engineering concealment that defines the whole project. Since the yacht has underwater exhausts, there was no need for a traditional dry stack – nor was there space to route ducting up to one. Instead, the funnel became the home of the fresh-air unit that draws in and purifies outside air for the HVAC system. Fitting it inside that tight volume meant some early design assumptions had to be reworked.&nbsp;Routing the air quietly around the yacht from high up in the vessel posed further challenges. The onboard noise targets are uncompromising and the owner’s suite is engineered for a harbour maximum of 44 decibels, although <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Hakvoort</a> typically achieves lower. Underway, the expected levels sit in the low 50s – quiet enough that the only audible sound should be the soft splash of water along the hull. Modern superyachts achieve such low mechanical noise levels that airflow has become the primary acoustic concern, not the engines or generators.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396212/image/large-a2aeb88e2ca030f7dc36a4bed74abb21.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396212">“You won’t hear machinery these days – you’ll hear air moving through the ducting,” confirms Klaas. “That’s why we focus obsessively on silencing ducts, bends and terminations.”Consider the HVAC ducting for the crew quarters. To reach the lower deck forward, it has to pass under the bed in the owner’s stateroom, negotiating several dog-leg bends in the process. Air accelerates noisily through tight turns due to mass conservation and pressure shifts, so the yard routinely uses flexible elbow sections with larger diameters and internal damping to reduce turbulence and suppress sound. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396214/image/large-892daf254a9606fb0d0d5fed5e58dda4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396214">Elegance with an edgeThe aluminium superstructure was built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5231" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alu-bouw Fryslân BV (Company)">Alubouw Fryslan</a> in Franeker and joined to the steel hull at Buijs Shipyard – the hull builder – before being towed to Monnickendam, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Royal Hakvoort</a> has its own joinery division and stainless-steel department that produce most of the fixed furniture and deck hardware in-house. Klaas points out the custom-engineered hinges used for the exterior doors as an example of the shipyard’s hands-on approach. During development, these hinges were tested in the most practical way imaginable: by suspending 40 kg weights to a toilet door heavily used by shop-floor workers. Any weaknesses that surfaced were corrected before installation.&nbsp;Another example is the aluminium hull platform that folds out from the topsides amidships and connects to the main deck by way of a boarding ladder for tender access. The platform being assembled in the metalworking department uses a hydraulic rotary or slew drive – more compact than conventional rams and able to generate high torque in tight spaces, it is a solution that has been refined by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/40" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Royal Hakvoort Shipyard (Company)">Royal Hakvoort</a> over years of building canoe-stern vessels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396211/image/large-9d9af2d4a7ba3a495473f7ac81ad923c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396211">Although capable of crossing the Atlantic, YB256 will primarily be used for short, comfortable runs with the frequent returns to port and high hospitality demands typical of most operational profiles. Every aspect of the interior has been conceived with wheelchair accessibility in mind, including a transformer-style platform in the stern. Guest and crew flows remain fully separated, which is not always the case on yachts of this size. The lower deck houses two full-beam VIP suites arranged around the main lobby and elevator; a third space will be used as an office/gym with a built-in recess for a running machine. The bridge deck is reserved for the owner’s sky lounge, while the captain’s cabin has been relocated to the lower deck. Crew areas have been configured to maximise discretion and operational efficiency with service and storage areas scaled to support day-use cruising.After touring the shipyard and the yacht, the lasting impression is that YB256 is not just a modern yacht in retro clothing. It is a study in constraint-driven design and smart engineering by a shipyard for whom “custom” is a vocation, not a marketing term. Initial works focused on a redesigned stern arrangement, a full repaint and a series of technical upgrades. "As the project developed, it became clear that we had the opportunity to do much more. A number of exterior elements have also been refreshed, alongside modifications made to her mast as part of her broader works.Moreover, the project extended deep into the yacht’s systems. Throughout the yacht, electrical systems were checked and upgraded, with new alarm, monitoring and power management systems fitted. The HVAC system was completely replaced, including new chillers, air handling units and fan coils.&nbsp;Guest and crew areas were also refreshed, including refurbished staterooms, restored marble surfaces, new blinds and updated interior finishes throughout. On deck, new teak was laid across most exterior areas. Key running gear was serviced and overhauled, including steering, shafts, bow thruster and rudders. Cold storage systems were renewed, diving equipment improved, tanks and technical rooms repainted, and her underwater hull coating fully redone after sandblasting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/396850/image/large-75c81ae7c7f8ec276ac58002cfd81609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/396850">The works carried out in her engine room and technical spaces were also substantial. Main engines and gearboxes were overhauled, two new generators installed, and core onboard systems replaced or upgraded. This included water production, ventilation, tank systems, sewage treatment, heating, freshwater distribution and fuel handling.
