Dutch brand CCS has revealed the amount of reports completed last year increased by a total of 17%, marking substantial growth for the Coating Consultants for superyachts. This was comprised of reports ranging from inspection reports and warranty surveys, to final surveys and tank inspection reports.

Our consultants are available in the major refit and new build yards located all over the world, including USA, Spain, Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Dubai, Qatar and, of course, the Netherlands.”

Since reestablishing the shipyard and opening its doors in June 2022, the team at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">Amsterdam Yacht Service (AYS)</a> has been bursting with refit projects. First opened in 1921, the shipyard in the Noordzee canal of Amsterdam’s NDSM port, is steeped in maritime history and the team are able to offer superyacht owners a unique combination of Dutch-pedigree expertise and innovative technology. This was a challenge which we rose to, and we are so proud of the results!”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294923/image/large-9357b72f4efee779db06e63d78d489e8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294923">Due to the length of the vessel the shipyard was required to demolish part of its shed and add a temporary extension, with the superyacht being transported in and out of the shed by means of a SPMT (Self Propelled Motor Trolly). Since the delivery of the yacht to her owner, the temporary extension has been removed, however new doors have been added in its place with a 12 metre opening, allowing for the accommodation of larger projects in the future. The shed has also benefited from a number of improvements, including an upgraded lighting system, a full repaint and a new fire suppression system.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294921/image/large-48a7e895b6744142a02e3839fc565de6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294921">Bespoke approach in the refit of 26m Arrabida&nbsp;The aluminium schooner Arrabida was successfully redelivered to her owner earlier this year following an extensive and highly bespoke refit. The yacht received a major paint job on her topsides which required the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">AYS</a> team to remove all the stainless steel fittings and the many water stays found on this kind of boat. They also implemented a comprehensive galvanic isolation programme to separate the electrical systems and avoid direct current flow. We designed and installed the bushings and plates to ensure the aluminium and stainless steel were kept well apart and avoid any oxidation in the future.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294930/image/large-1449de4964377c9ba097dc832d5f8cee.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294930">Other aspects of the refit included various repairs on the deck and the wooden cleats which had been subject to storm damage. One of the hydraulic power-packs was also replaced and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">AYS</a> were tasked with a complete overhaul of her propeller and the related shaft, tunnel and variable pitch controls. Wear patterns on the tunnel showed that it was misaligned by some eight millimetres, an unusual find that meant the team had to cut out the original shaft tunnel and replace it with a new aluminium section. A new propeller shaft tunnel was then drilled, this time with the precise alignment required.Robert Binnekade explained, “As well as demanding the flexibility to adapt to complex changing requirements, this kind of challenge requires a great deal of knowledge and technical prowess. We successfully completed everything in-house leveraging on our yard’s experience not only with yachts but also with the demanding propeller installations required on the canal boats of Amsterdam. Arrabida’s refit is a fine example of the way the team works together to complex an advanced custom refit project, that was carefully aligned with the owner and which was completed with complete transparency in terms of costs.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294922/image/large-e528bb315f032c15a97b84bc5ce226fa.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294922">Other recent works&nbsp;Previously known as Commercial Break, the 28-metre Moonen motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trooper27.43m (89'12&quot;)Moonen Yachts2003">Trooper</a> arrived in Amsterdam in November 2022 following her sale. Hauled out ahead of her inspection and undergoing an underwater paint repair, the yacht received a full hydro-jet of her new underwater hull, and a full paint job of her superstructure and top sides, restoring her back to her former glory. We disassembled and reassembled all of her hatches, doors, railings, tables and more, alongside refreshing her masts with all of the antennae and associated navigation equipment, repairing her teak deck, cleaning her propellers and replacing her water seal.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/294929/image/large-a00a9c7a55488f4668d860b9b81934c1.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/294929">One of the largest yachts to undergo works at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6695" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Amsterdam Yacht Service (Company)">Amsterdam Yacht Service</a>, the historic converted superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1098" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sherakhan69.65m (228'6&quot;)Scheepswerf A.Vuyk & Zonen1966">Sherakhan</a> underwent a number of complex in-water maintenance works. In Cannes this September, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> unveiled the next steps of its systematic approach to achieving net-zero. A topic that has engulfed the superyacht industry, a number of builders – with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> at the fore – are partnering with manufacturers and searching for solutions to the regulatory demands that are increasingly putting pressure on the sector. With the first yacht with fuel cells to be launched by the Italian yard next year, we sat down with CEO Massimo Perotti, to get a deeper insight into the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> strategy toward sustainability and to hear his perspective on how regulators should encourage the use of alternative propulsion systems across the industry.Could you elaborate on whether there are plans for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> to offer alternative propulsion options for all vessels above a certain size in the future?It would be the ultimate goal to be able to offer all yachts with some form of alternative propulsion but unfortunately we do not know when we will be able to apply these technologies. It is not a problem of the engineering or the new fuels, but rather an issue with the potential infrastructure and distribution to support alternative propulsion methods. The most critical aspect is the global distribution of methanol and hydrogen. It's evident that substantial investments are necessary to address this issue and notably, major players in the shipping industry, such as Maersk, are actively involved in these efforts<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293397/image/large-a465a880baaefa108e734c7bf31217d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293397">Does your team hope to collaborate with shipping companies and other key stakeholders?In terms of collaborations, our primary focus lies in working with suppliers instead of major shipping companies. However, it's worth noting that Maersk, a prominent player in that sector, recently initiated a program to secure €500 million in financing through a green bond. This bond, dedicated to the acquisition of ships powered by methanol, generated significant interest from financial investors, resulting in oversubscription seven times over and a total financing of €3.5 billion. This exemplifies the heightened interest of financial stakeholders in sustainability-related initiatives, which in the long term will have a positive impact on our industry.Beyond financing, we must address practical challenges related to the logistics of methanol and hydrogen distribution, particularly in key marinas. While facilitating the transport of cargo from major ports like Everglades, Miami, Genoa, Rotterdam, and Dubai presents relatively straightforward logistical solutions, the situation becomes considerably more intricate when dealing with yachts in remote locations such as the Greek islands.&nbsp;Regarding the global response to climate change, the pace of action may indeed accelerate as we experience more extreme weather events. However, it's important to acknowledge that the coordinated efforts of countries like India and China, both major contributors to global emissions, are essential in addressing these concerns. As European stakeholders, our capacity to effect change is limited until we see more substantial commitment from other significant players on the global stage.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/288449/image/large-ba7b6f7d71abb02034e71c17d7bb257a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/288449">In Malta last year you mentioned an obstacle related to the IMO 500 GT regulations, and how having a fuel cell on a yacht might not align with this restriction. Could you elaborate on the implications of this limitation and how it impacts the integration of alternative propulsion systems?The government's approach is aimed at supporting industries as they transition towards sustainable profitability. Unlike electric cars in Italy, which offer buyers incentives, we do not propose such incentives for superyachts. Instead, we believe that the additional costs associated with eco-friendly technologies should be borne by superyacht owners.However, when I engage with a customer and explain that choosing a fuel cell system over a conventional thermal generator results a considerable amount of money&nbsp;, it understandably becomes a significant financial consideration. This consideration is further compounded when they realise that accommodating the fuel cell requires the reduction of the master cabin's size by around 18 square-metres. This, indeed, poses a significant challenge.Our proposal is a collaborative effort, requiring no additional expenditure. We suggest that all stakeholders convene to reconsider the regulations governing the 500-GT calculation. Specifically, we propose allowing deductions for spaces dedicated to sustainability, such as the 18 square-metres required for fuel cell placement. This change would be standardised across all shipyards.The current regulation, established in IMO 1969, is now five decades old. Since then, maritime technology has advanced significantly, with innovations like Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). These SCR systems can be as large as engines like an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> with 2,000 horsepower.The inclusion of SCR is necessary for emissions control, but it utilises space that we propose to deduct. This deduction aims to avoid undue financial burden on customers. It's worth noting that the marine industry is evolving, and its growth is driven by two key players: customers and shipbuilders. Other stakeholders, such as journalists, captains, class societies, flag authorities, and legal professionals, contribute to making things happen in the industry.However, for the industry to thrive, the collaboration of customers and shipbuilders is essential. Our duty as shipbuilders is to design products that customers appreciate and are willing to invest in. Considering the perception of yachting in the broader context, how do you believe that collectively, as an industry we can work to reshape this perception?To address this challenge effectively, it's crucial that we unite as an industry. A prime example of such collaboration is our work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2589" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Builders Association (SYBAss) (Company)">SYBAss</a>, where we encouraged cooperation between industry stakeholders, including prominent marinas and journalists.&nbsp;*(We must rally together to protect the yachting industry as a whole, recognising that the relatively small carbon footprint (0.2% of 3%) of yachting pales in comparison to its social and economic impact.)*It's essential to communicate both the disadvantages and advantages clearly. Our industry isn't solely about super-rich oligarchs; it's also about the thousands of skilled European artisans who contribute to its success. It's about preserving an industry where Europe takes the lead. A yacht like a 60-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> is not something easily replicated in China. We must avoid losing an entire sector to emerging markets.This discussion involves two aspects. Firstly, there's the need for technological advancements to reduce carbon emissions, focusing not only on engine efficiency but also on carbon capture from the atmosphere, which is more impactful in the long run.However, there's another aspect related to our lifestyles. We must embrace a less consumer-driven approach, reminiscent of our parents' generation, where one coat at a time sufficed, rather than accumulating numerous items with slight variations.
