My role centres on Falmouth, ensuring clear ownership and direction. Stephen Hills can now focus on the Group’s commercial activities and Toby Allies on client engagement. We’re planning both in five-year and 15-year horizons – not just business goals, but also how we’re perceived by the community and the industry as a whole.&nbsp;We are also making physical amendments to the yard in Falmouth and have secured planning permission to raise the roof on part of the dry dock, which will allow larger vessels with more air draft to enter. We’re also extending Hall 3 – where <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a> was built – by 40 metres, adding capacity, workshops, and new technology. Currently we can handle a single 75 metre and a 50 metre yacht simultaneously. Over recent years we’ve completed some highly significant rebuilds and reconstructions such as the classic motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/534" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marala58.8m (192'11&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1931">Marala</a> and more recently <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3535" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jester68.8m (225'9&quot;)OY Laivateollisuus1972">Jester</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf58.83m (193'0&quot;)J. & K. Smits Scheepswerven N.V.1957">Seawolf</a>, which have shone the light on our refit capabilities.&nbsp;The completion of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a> last year, however, was an opportunity to demonstrate to the industry that our expertise is excellently translated to the completion of complex new-builds. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a> was an unusual project, coming to us in a partially completed state, we were able to employ a lot of our technological and design abilities to the yacht and put our own print on it. The final yacht has been extremely well received, and we are certainly open to more new-builds, though we do not have plans to transition into a solely new-build yard. &nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Falmouth</a> is a full-service shipyard, and we employ all of our staff directly which gives us excellent control over timelines and quality. That being said, in the past 18 months we’ve had the aforementioned and highly significant rebuild of the 58.83-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/697" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf58.83m (193'0&quot;)J. & K. Our long-serving team means many of the people who worked on a yacht years ago are still here for its next visit, and the lessons learned from refits directly inform our new-build practices, which I think makes it a very solid combined offering. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360146/image/large-1b3d0f93fb14ef19b9957d6841a91d7b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360146"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis Falmouth</a>&nbsp;has made significant investments in technology, could you elaborate on that with some specifics?&nbsp;In the first instance with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fox34.86m (114'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd2024">Fox</a>, we used our 3D scanning capability to capture the built structural environment accurately so that we could then allocate the net space to systems engineering and allow the modelling of the interior carpentry and cabinetry to be developed in the envelope. Further to this to improve production efficiency and quality we elected not to use drawings but had the live digital models on iPad for the production teams to use for installation. This was a first step, next time I can see this being further augmented in some way to further improve the outcomes.&nbsp;At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a> we’re always looking to improve our facilities and services, and our most recent technological development has been the opening of a new Digital Manufacturing Centre (DMC) on-site in Falmouth. The DMC extends our current capability with additional CNC cutting, profiling and machining equipment to fully leverage our existing 3D scanning and design capability.&nbsp;On-site we have a CNC water cutting machine capable of cutting almost any material 200 mm thick, 4-metres long by 2-metres wide. We think each brings coherency to our offering as a high-quality provider in the industry. Is that still the case?&nbsp;Absolutely. As a full-service yard, the trade mix needs to fit. Long-term projects allow us to manage resources efficiently while also handling shorter refits. It means our technical and design specialists can contribute real value across the board.&nbsp;We’re not an out-and-out new build yard, nor just a quick refit stop. Clients come to us for technically challenging projects or tight timelines. We aim to deliver Northern European standards but with a more tailored service and continuity through facilities like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2873" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Vilanova (Company)">Vilanova</a>.&nbsp;We operate year-round, and the maritime tradition here means people love working at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>. Our average workforce age is around 37, thanks to ongoing apprenticeships. But we also have veterans who’ve been here since day one – there’s a wealth of knowledge, around 6 million man-hours. We recently repaired a timber sailing yacht’s hull using techniques mastered over decades. We had over 300 attendees at our apprentice evening and 108 applicants for about 20 places – that’s promising. But we must ensure there are clear pathways into management or technical roles. We recently launched a digital manufacturing centre, grouping CNC and profiling tools with 3D scanning and other innovations. And of course, sustainability is a key challenge. We've hired a transformational lead to drive this agenda – it’s the start of a critical journey for the company.&nbsp;

"We call <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> ‘Home of Giants’ due to the big size of the superyachts we host in Tarragona," Maite explains. Eager for a new challenge, joining <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> “felt like I was in the right place at the right moment; I usually remind my colleagues how lucky we are to work in such an industry.”&nbsp;Looking back at the last decade, it has been an exchange of experience: where Maite has brought in a lot of knowledge and know-how from the hospitality sector, as well as a fresh perspective, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> has, in turn, taught her almost everything she knows about yachting.&nbsp;During her time at the port, Maite has experienced many changes and developments “when I first started, the marina was a very different operation; much more quiet. Then we would be happy if we had all 20 berths full.” There would be time for her to get to know crew members and learn about the industry’s unique demands. For the past three years, during the high season, the 32 berths are constantly busy and it’s never quiet in the port - there is always something to do, someone to help, or a next event to organise.&nbsp;As <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> continues to grow, the challenge lies not only in meeting the increased operational demands, but also in preserving the company culture. For Maite and her team that means helping with any type of request that they may receive. “Sometimes it’s helping someone book accommodation, sometimes it’s finding second-hand golf clubs or taking someone to the doctor. Since then, the marina has grown exponentially, with an emphasis on creating quality experience for guests and employees alike. “There has been a huge change in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a>’s development when <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a> took over marina management,” Maite says. “The company projects both commercially and on the staff structure were a game changer.”The impact has been visible throughout the marina, which is constantly busy, seeing most of the 32 berths occupied, as well as facilities being expanded and improved and the reputation of the marina within the superyacht community has strengthened. “We’ll have captains who are eager to return and make a quick call to reserve a berth. But we also get a lot of superyachts via referrals, like a captain who recommends <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2818" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Port Tarraco (Company)">Port Tarraco</a> to another captain.”&nbsp;Another important element of the marina is her security. With 24-hour surveillance and glass walls surrounding the entire premise, guests can feel safe and secure, as well as controlled dock access. Different personalities, backgrounds and generations bring varying perspectives, but everyone shares the same objective: continuously improving the marina and the service delivered to its clients. “Nani [the Sales Business Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6623" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocibar (Company)">Ocibar</a>] is always running, he’s always one step ahead and has such a brilliant mind, this way of working has inspired me a lot,” shares Maite. There is total silence onboard.”Another one of the senses <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5252" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alpha Custom Yachts (Company)">Alpha Custom Yachts</a> is especially considerate of is smell. “You can walk into a beautiful boat but if it’s humid or there are unpleasant odours, it ruins the experience.” The yard has noticed that many of the odour-related issues don’t actually originate from black or grey water tanks themselves, but from low-quality piping systems that begin to sweat over time. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/395761/image/large-f1870b9a00c455b1e44bcca22a5b9127.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/395761">To prevent this, the Squalo 100 has incorporated high quality piping systems alongside a positive-pressure make-up air system designed to continuously renew and purify the air onboard. “Approximately six times per hour, the entire interior air volume is renewed with fresh air.” The result is a refreshing onboard environment.The air-flow design onboard the yacht has also been thoroughly considered: “we maintain more pressure inside the salon than outside, so when the doors open, fresh air escapes outward and blocks hot air from entering” Roberto explains. Guests often want to know who is looking after them.The point is not to overwhelm guests with information. The point is to bring together the information they actually care about, in a way that is easy to explore.Where do you see onboard guest technology going?Daniel: I think the best yacht technology will become less visible as “technology”. It should just work. It should feel natural. Guests should not need instructions.People are used to very polished digital experiences in their normal life. When they step onboard a superyacht, expectations are even higher. But the solution is not to make things complicated. It is to make the right things simple.That is what we are trying to do with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7736" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="YachtEye (Company)">YachtEye</a>. From the development of its new ULTIMA range to advancing solar-powered and near-zero-emission cruising technologies, the Polish shipyard is reshaping expectations of what a luxury multihull can deliver. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/393756/image/large-4ec8dde4d4c215d0156df3e50b608098.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/393756">Speaking about the future of catamaran superyachts, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> co-founder and CTO Nicolas Lapp outlined how changing owner priorities are influencing everything from propulsion systems and onboard comfort to material selection and artificial intelligence-driven sailing technologies.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394038/image/large-de1683fdbf2981d69e7999ae8abad7d2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394038">A new direction for performance catamaransAccording to Lapp, the ULTIMA range was born directly from client demand for greater speed and a more engaging cruising experience, while retaining the spaciousness and comfort associated with multihulls.“The ULTIMA range is really a response to what our clients were asking for,” explained Lapp. “They love the comfort and space of our catamarans, but many wanted more performance, more speed and a more dynamic experience underway.”“With ULTIMA, the goal was to combine the best of both worlds: the liveability of a catamaran with the performance closer to a monohull.” To achieve this, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> developed a sleeker hull architecture combined with carefully optimised propulsion systems designed to improve both efficiency and speed. The first ULTIMA 88 is capable of reaching 26 knots, with additional engine configurations planned for future models.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394028/image/large-7971dab87ae7b5ead04551be001adcea.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394028">“The first ULTIMA 88 reaches 26 knots, but soon you will also see new engine configurations that will allow for even higher performance depending on owner preferences,” he added.Balancing speed, efficiency and comfort, however, presented a significant engineering challenge for the shipyard. “The platform is quite different from classic Sunreef catamarans, so it required a fresh approach on multiple levels,” said Lapp.One of the most notable developments was the introduction of stabilisation systems for the first time within the range. “For the first time, we introduced stabilisers,” he explained. “With this new architecture, it became essential to ensure the same level of onboard comfort our clients expect. Selecting the right system was a challenge in itself, but we found a stabilisation solution that fits the ULTIMA 88 perfectly and performs exceptionally well.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243904/image/large-7cd5c4f3256f9a5d0cbf4de4230e2297.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243904">The growing appeal of catamaran superyachtsLapp believes the wider superyacht market is increasingly recognising the inherent advantages of multihull platforms, particularly as owner priorities shift toward efficiency, practicality and understated luxury. “Catamaran superyachts are currently one of the strongest and most exciting trends in the market,” he noted. “From the very beginning <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> has focused on combining superyacht quality with the catamaran platform.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/394065/image/large-66926bacf337b76a2728b4cd517b6ddc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/394065">Projects such as the 100 Sunreef Power, Sunreef 37M Eco and the 43M Eco illustrate how these changing expectations are influencing both technical development and interior design philosophy. “In terms of interiors, there’s a strong shift toward more spacious, calming environments – soft colors, a more ‘zen’ atmosphere,” Lapp said. “It’s less about ostentation and more about understated, refined luxury.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/217059/image/large-12e630eaaf8f68845b8e70c05748ce14.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/217059">At the same time, owners are becoming increasingly conscious of operational efficiency and environmental impact. “Energy efficiency and sustainability have become key considerations,” he explained. “Owners are increasingly aware of how their yachts operate and are looking for smarter, more responsible solutions.”Lapp also highlighted the practical benefits catamarans offer over traditional monohulls, particularly in terms of volume and energy efficiency. “The most obvious advantage is space,” he said. “The wider beam allows for much larger, open living areas, both inside and outside. This width also gives us a more usable surface for solar integration, which directly supports our energy strategy.” In addition to larger onboard spaces, catamarans benefit from shallower drafts and more efficient hull dynamics. “They require less energy to move through the water,” Lapp explained. “The engineering approach is different, but the payoff is significant: more volume and better (Company)">Sunreef</a>’s long-term strategy, with the shipyard continuing to expand its portfolio of electric and hybrid-powered yachts.“We take a 360-degree approach to eco-conscious yachting,” said Lapp. “It’s not about a single technology, but how different systems work together.” Among the most impactful developments are the integration of solar panels, advanced battery systems and energy-efficient air conditioning technologies, all aimed at significantly reducing generator dependency. “This allows yachts to significantly reduce generator use,” he noted.On sailing catamarans, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is also incorporating hydroregeneration systems capable of producing electricity from the movement of the propellers under sail. “With the right setup and navigation profile, this combination can bring the yacht very close to zero-emission operation in real conditions,” Lapp explained.&nbsp;Solar integration itself has become a defining element of the shipyard’s design philosophy. “What makes our solution different is that the panels are not just added on – they’re fully integrated into the yacht’s structure,” he said. “The hull sides, superstructure, bimini, even masts in some cases.”By maximising available surface area for energy generation, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> is able to reduce reliance on conventional onboard power systems. “Instead of relying on generators, we can cover up to 100% of the hotel load directly from solar energy,” Lapp revealed. “When it comes to cruising, with the right navigation profile, like island hopping and smart energy management, it’s possible to navigate using close to zero fuel.”<img (Company)">Sunreef</a> is also investing heavily in advanced materials aimed at improving both performance and sustainability. “For example, we use recycled PET foam made from plastic bottles,” said Lapp. “Beyond being sustainable, it helps reduce weight, which improves overall yacht efficiency and performance.”The shipyard is additionally replacing traditional plywood structures in certain areas with lighter PET-based alternatives, while exploring natural composite materials such as flax fibre. “We’re also introducing materials like flax fiber, which offer similar properties to composites but come from natural, low-impact sources,” he added.Looking ahead, Lapp believes artificial intelligence and automation will play a defining role in the future of large sailing catamarans. “One of the most exciting directions for large multihull yachts is definitely the evolution of sailing itself,” he said.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" sailing performance more accessible and easier to manage, even on larger yachts.” While details remain limited, he hinted that the shipyard will soon unveil further developments in this area.<img Just as physical tank test models are giving way to computational fluid dynamics, so another form of virtual modelling is coming to the fore – the digital twin. But what is a digital twin, and how can we use them to streamline superyacht design, construction and operation?Providing an exact definition of a digital twin can be tricky, not least because different people use the term in different ways. With conceptual origins tracing back to NASA in the 1960s, the truth is that digital twins come in a variety of forms and offer multiple applications – all of which have the potential to change the approach to design and enhance the operational effectiveness of superyachts.“I haven’t found a consistent way that people use the term,” says software developer Boudewijn van Groos. “For example, some call a simple 3D model a digital twin, even if it doesn’t make predictions. It might show live sensor data from the vessel, but it’s really just a portal into the actual ship. That is fundamentally different to a software model that mimics the behaviour of a system based on physical or statistical calculations. Yet people refer to both as digital twins.”Models created in a software environment are arguably the purest form of digital twinning. They are increasingly being used both to train AI and to enable systems developers to code the core parts of a yacht’s controllers while the physical yacht itself is still in build – a decisive factor when faced with tight construction and delivery schedules.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397081/image/large-c63a38ee887c535cd43a28154e353077.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397081">Virtual virtuesVan Groos is leading a team of software developers who are undertaking the coding of a multifaceted monitoring and control system aboard Project Zero, the renewables-powered sailing yacht under construction at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/34" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vitters Shipyard (Company)">Vitters Shipyard</a>. In collaboration with German company XRG Simulation, they have been building a virtual version of the yacht’s systems in Modelica, which allows them to write the code for the programmable logic controller (PLC) for the thermal harvesting and recovery system, for example, and test it before the physical system has been completed. While the team has also been using a current sailing superyacht as a test bed, creating a digital twin has brought additional benefits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397079/image/large-c1ba2f94baf775740a49c5322a0b5621.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397079">“For everything we’re doing we first write the physical thing into code to form the digital twin,” Van explains. “That simulation can be very basic, or a deep mechanical simulation. It gives us an opportunity to prevent regression bugs and it means we can avoid having to run our code on a physical system that means needing the real machine every time, which is just a hassle.”Developing a digital twin not only creates a platform for virtual testing, it also provides an opportunity to explore or to train AI, which can have real-world applications in a finished project. Indeed, this is the approach that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3559" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Videoworks Group (Company)">Videoworks</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1080" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Rossinavi (Company)">Rossinavi</a> took, in collaboration with the University of Pisa, to develop the systems on the 42.84-metre superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12135" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seawolf X42.84m (140'7&quot;)Rossinavi2024">Seawolf X</a> catamaran.“On a yacht you have a lot of very high-tech systems, each optimised and each with sensor actuators,” explains Maurizio Minossi, CEO and CTO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3559" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Videoworks Group (Company)">Videoworks</a>. “The idea is to create a sort of manager that grabs the data coming from the different subsystems and, thanks to the use of AI algorithms, gives it added value in terms of monitoring and control.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397078/image/large-3bbe7f4296cb60275d58eb400d1d5976.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397078">“AI algorithms need to train on something – you need a story,” adds Sergio Saponara, director of the Department of Informational Engineering at the University of Pisa. “But if the technology is new, how do you create that story? Creating a digital model of a yacht allows you to fill the AI with data. You analyse the chiller in a model, then you combine it with all the other models to create the whole ship.”The system they have developed, which has been designed to be modular for use across multiple yacht designs and configurations, integrates various network-connected sensors, smart plugs, and actuators, such as HVAC systems, lighting, and automated blinds, orchestrated by an advanced AI algorithm. The digital twin enables the simulation of different configurations and operational scenarios, generating virtual data that can be used to train AI models – a useful approach given the challenges of limited experimental data on energy consumption and passenger habits.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397077/image/large-efe714be9d6f415bcddaf70b66ca2da0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397077">Test rig&nbsp;It’s not just in systems design that digital twins are being utilised. For Dale Morris, Group Head of Global Design at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a>, the development of digital twins has enabled advanced, in-the-box testing before a rig is stepped – a serious advantage given the one-off nature and complexity of superyacht masts and sail plans.&nbsp;“The outcome is what’s on the water, but the model that came before it has been through all the conditions,” he says. “It starts with base mast properties, rigging pre-tension and tuning, but we add in the actual moulded sail shape and structural files from North Sails, and then we can assess the rig to a whole other level.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397082/image/large-2efc90f958531c34f23220a01c23ffdf.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397082">This allows the team to see the effect of their rig design choices even down to its impact on the actual shape of the sails. They can go into a whole CFD loop, where the fluid structure interaction (FSI) loops back into the non-linear FEA – non-linear because the mast is flexible. That essentially means they can sea-trial the yacht before any carbon fibre even gets laid in the mast mould.“That also flows through into how we communicate the safe operation to the customer with all the sheet runs and all the load interfaces, so that boatbuilders can build-in the right safety factors,” &nbsp;Morris explains. “You can assess all that within the digital twin.”It also impacts the initial sea trial phases because, rather than the traditional method of stepping a mast and eyeballing the rig to tune it and ensure it is set up symmetrically, it can effectively be pre-set. Gone are the days where you put the rig in, go sailing and flop from tack to tack, make changes, rinse and repeat, which can be a two-day operation.“We are able to virtually go sailing before we even put carbon in the mast tooling, and for yacht designers, owners and crew that’s a huge benefit because it elevates confidence before you get further into the project,” &nbsp;says Vincent Guiot, Group Sales Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2447" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Spars (Company)">Southern Spars</a>. &nbsp;Further, the applications extend to the operational phase. By using the information from the load sensors from specific conditions. If something doesn’t look quite right, the team can plug that data back into the digital twin and help someone on board diagnose the issue more efficiently.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397080/image/large-77d39333b2a17751661ad462a20fdfc0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397080">Practical magic&nbsp;As CAD has advanced, so 3D models have become commonplace, not only in terms of determining the underlying engineering layout of a vessel but also to ensure the vessel can be built as efficiently as possible. But when one superyacht project approached Dutch company Goltens to take that 3D model further, the potential for an all-encompassing digital twin quickly became apparent.“Normally we design, engineer and create 3D models, and during that process a lot of information on the components – size, material, capacity, make, model – is put into a database,” says Sandra Jutte of Goltens’ Green Technologies division. “But when the vessel departs, most of that information, which can number thousands of data files, stays behind. For this project, we were asked how we could collect all the engineering data in one place during construction and use it to make the yacht smarter in operation.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397085/image/large-8490e120db5880a524554f471c7eb9b6.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397085">To achieve that, the Goltens team combined ongoing 3D scanning during the build with CAD and engineering drawings to create a digital version of Project Zero that is a perfect match for the real thing. The result is that all the information on the build, systems and components is available for easy access – especially useful when it comes to fault-finding or in the event of a system alarm.&nbsp;“You need an exact copy of the yacht, so during the entire build our team has been on site with a 3D scanner capturing every stage of the build,” says Jutte. “We’ve scanned every detail, including 100,000 metres of cables and six kilometres of piping.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397086/image/large-39fff693692206113bdc5e36b8ec672b.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397086">Every pump, pipe and system is connected and with e-sharing it’s possible to click into the engineering drawing and instantly jump to the same spot in the 3D model, and vice versa. All relevant details and spare parts listings are available with a click. What’s more, the digital twin will form the backbone for predictive maintenance and, potentially, AI-rooted energy efficiency and systems analysis during the operational phase – an aspect that could have huge impact for a project where every kilowatt counts.The potential goes further, however, because wherever the vessel goes, the digital twin goes too. This means designers can use the digital twin to experiment with new ideas or test layouts without ever touching the real vessel, while engineers can follow system performance and simulate improvements, and and owners can explore their yacht anytime, anywhere.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/397087/image/large-8c4ef31785ce28bc95f037d27cf282ff.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/397087">Such a comprehensive scan-based digital twin improves maintenance aspects – with all manuals and spare parts lists easily accessible, and with the potential to add predictive maintenance algorithms – but also aids efficiency in a refit phase.&nbsp;“Refits and repairs are no longer a guessing game,” says Jutte. “Because if a component needs to be replaced or a new component fitted, the digital twin already knows what’s there currently and if the new one will fit. It means you can order or prefabricate parts with confidence. How is virtual modelling transforming superyacht design and operation

From rig testing to predictive maintenance, digital twins are reshaping how superyachts are designed, built and operated.

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida has dismissed the entire complaint brought by Export Yacht Sales (Brill Maritime), which alleged that Boats Group illegally monopolised the US online boat-listing market through YachtWorld, Boat Trader and boats.com.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355047/image/large-0bd8f332392990f5a08cac6ea37b81d1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355047">The lawsuit was filed on 14 August 2025, with Brill Maritime alleging that Boats Group controlled approximately 75 percent of the market for listing and marketing recreational boats and used subscription agreements that either bar or discourage brokers and dealers from listing vessels on rival platforms.Read more: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/64073" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="US boat dealers bring antitrust class action against Boats Group (2025-08-21 13:00:00 +0200)">US boat dealers bring antitrust class action against Boats Group</a><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355053/image/large-d4b378b0bbe9bf56a1926a2d570b4fd5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355053">According to Brill Maritime, competing platforms had been unable to achieve the scale or inventory to grow their services effectively, leaving brokers and dealers with limited options.The court found that Brill Maritime had plausibly alleged that the relevant market could be defined as an online boat listing and marketing service in the United States and that Boat Group may possess monopoly power in that market.&nbsp;Brill Maritime also alleged that Boat’s Group claimed 75 percent of the global share, reasonably supporting an inference that it has a dominant position in the US market. As a result of this, the judge did not dismiss the case because Boats Group lacks market power.However, the judge said that Brill Maritime had failed to show that Boats Group engaged in illegal anticompetitive conduct and under US antitrust law, being a monopoly is not illegal by itself.The court repeatedly emphasised that monopoly power is legal, but using that power through anticompetitive behaviour to exclude rivals is illegal.&nbsp;The judge found that Brill Maritime’s three main allegations were insufficient including that Boats Group became dominant by acquiring competitors such as YachtWorld.com, boats.com and YachtCloser.com.The judge said that acquiring competitors is not necessarily illegal and that Brill Maritime had not explained how these acquisitions had harmed competition. The complaint had described the acquisitions as “strategic” suggesting it was more of a successful business move than illegal conduct. The judge explained that Brill Maritime had shown that Boats Group bought competitors, but not that these acquisitions were unlawful. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355039/image/large-513a0ee840e10e5371f647093bba58d9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355039">Brill Maritime also claimed that Boats Group's subscription agreements stoped brokers from listing boats elsewhere. The judge examined the contract language and concluded that the provision merely prevented brokers from implying that a YachtWorld or Boats Group listing originated somewhere else. He therefore concluded that you can advertise on YachtWorld and on other sites and the contract simply prevented you from pretending a Boats Group listing came from another platform, meaning the clause is not an exclusive dealing arrangement.Finally, Brill Maritime argued that Boats Group had dramatically increased its prices. The judge responded that high prices alone are not an antitrust violation. The court cited multiple precedents saying a legal monopolist is generally allowed to charge whatever prices it wants. To prove monopolisation, Brill Maritime needed to show that the higher prices resulted from illegal exclusionary conduct.In conclusion, the judge accepted that Boats Group may hold monopoly power in the US online boat-listing market, but ruled that the plaintiffs failed to show that Boats Group acquired or maintained that position through illegal anticompetitive conduct.United States District Judge, Roy K. Altman dismissed the complaint without prejudice, meaning the plaintiff is able to resubmit an amended complaint, with a deadline of 30 June 2026.&nbsp;The lawsuit also contained claims under Florida law, with the federal court declining to hear the state claims as the federal antitrust claims were dismissed.
