It is a really challenging class to win, and to then win the overall title is not easy. The race crew that we have are a really nice bunch of people who have a lot of respect for the permanent crew. Looking back to August 1986, one can observe the humble beginnings of the Bucket Regattas, the very first of which was a hastily thrown-together affair in Nantucket, Massachusetts. The originary seeds of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/163" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="St. Barths Bucket Regatta - 2023">Bucket Regattas</a> were sown in a spirited discussion that took place at a high-society birthday celebration between several yacht owners concerning optimal yacht design and individual sailing prowess.With undisputed bragging rights to last an annum hailed as the grand prize, the following day seven sailing yachts raced on a make-shift 15 nautical mile course around Nantucket Sound. However, participants soon learned that camaraderie formed at sea between like-minded individuals was the greatest prize of all. I’m going to let you in on a secret: you don’t need a 70-metre Ice Class explorer with all the trappings to venture beyond the Arctic Circle. It helps, of course. But you don’t need it. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53695/image/large-e178dc99c85345f11b6d21b02f0f5d2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53695">Arctic exploration, famed for being reserved for the rugged, intrepid type that have the keen ability to fend off packs of polar bears, scurvy, frostbite and hunger with nothing but a swiss army knife (you know the stories), has become more accessible. Ice-punching tall ships are no longer a necessity for the journey, just good planning can get you there.Around 75 percent more pleasure vessels are making the most of this too, with close to 2,000 yachts and cruise ships now making the trip annually. The Arctic Ocean might be the smallest of the world’s five, but it still boasts 14.06 million km² of area that spans eight countries, so don’t expect the region to be thriving with fellow explorers – they’ll be few and far between.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251497/image/large-53c166032fa50b37790363816b469d45.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251497">Safety is paramount when looking into high latitude cruising and it goes without saying that you want a trustworthy vessel that can withstand the harsh temperatures and pressures of the Arctic Ocean. An Ice Class vessel would definitely be favourable, but not owning one doesn’t make the region inaccessible &nbsp;– it just depends on how far north you want to go.Most yachts – even white med boats – can get you to some pretty remote locations. Steel and aluminium perhaps more so, but GRP-constructed vessels are also pretty hardy, especially those that aren’t constructed from “sandwich” composite. But always, always get them professionally inspected before setting off.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251489/image/large-ebf94223b2711646a3a0993d24cf407c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251489">For owners of smaller yachts, it's wise to double-check the keel and rudder of your vessel as with the thrill of navigating uncharted waters comes the risk of becoming grounded at some point during the trip. Your yacht needs to be able to withstand this stress. For the same reason, it’s not a bad idea to bring a spare propeller and a member of crew who can maintain the vessel in case of an incident.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53696/image/large-1f2d185fd2840da51045a602d32b8ab2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53696">An inflatable RIB is also strongly advised, as well as two heavy anchors that will keep you steadfast at great depths and against strong, prevailing katabatic winds. However much easier the Arctic may be to reach, it still needs to be well respected; expect extreme weather conditions, poor chartering, a lack of shelter and to be self-sufficient for the duration of your trip. But, as anyone who’s made the trip will attest: it’s worth it.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251499/image/large-648c16ce76dc1819e77ef5968dd656a2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251499">“There is so much unexpected intrigue in the Arctic, which I think is kind of part of the charm,” Venetia Stagg, Expedition Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6954" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pelorus (Company)">Pelorus</a>, said. “People do expect massive ice sheets, deep blue as far as the eye can see, and maybe a walrus or two, but there is much more to the region than that.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251498/image/large-ffbde956c02573f6bc38d9f0b265e234.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251498">The Arctic spans the northern regions of Canada, Greenland, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Alaska – each with its own cultures and untempered flora and fauna. Each season has its own charm, the summer season (June, July and August) is the most popular. These months are the most raucous on the wildlife front as its both mating and hatching season. It’s also the most accessible as passages, such as the Hinlopen Strait on the western side of Svalbard, have thawed sufficiently, allowing free passage.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/121720/image/large-e38de5257fa31175168f0abd8c297d96.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/121720">Bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent, shorts and polarised sunglasses though, as during the days you can expect high heats and the critters that invariably come with these temperatures. Black-out blinds are also strongly recommended, as nightfall isn’t much of a thing during these months.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/251491/image/large-e178f7c5c6fd3dc0afeb5d591f24d3fd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/251491">“The Arctic summer can get really quite warm, it’s lovely. But do pack layers, both for yourself and your crew. What gulets are to Turkey and Croatia, dhows are to the United Arab Emirates. Wrought with tradition with builds dating back aeons – the dhows are an integral part of UAE culture and heritage and are still widely used today. This tradition has spurred on a strange phenomenon: wooden dhow-inspired superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262478/image/large-608b9781f319d0cefba1295d8e9e0f70.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262478">The first dhows that danced across the Red Sea and Indian Ocean were much thinner than they are today. Over the years they’ve stretched and expanded to offer more volume and more stability, but originally they were incredibly slender, packed with goods, darting from port to port.Fisherman and pearl divers had different requirements and needed space to carry their equipment and daily catches. Importantly, they also needed space for more people. These beamier boats are a common sight across the UAE and many are so engorged, swallowing entire restaurants to offer fine dining experiences for hundreds of guests at any given cruise.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262477/image/large-c292da7f2fb1c4adcbbbe9af10bd0569.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262477">The wooden superyachts infuse the two traditions. “The DNA of these superyachts relate just as much to the original dhows as they do to the wide beam and voluminous modern ones,” Mahmoud Itani of IR Yachts told SuperYacht Times. “In this region, onboard space is really important as people want to go out with large groups of friends; usage is very different to Europe.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/263196/image/large-96a02755f154b9edeb1b5b06b318e78d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/263196">"These yachts are hard to trace as they’re custom-built for individual clients and rarely go on the market – or to any shows, for that matter. “I’ve been attending and organising the Dubai International Boat Show for more than 10 years now, and I can’t remember ever seeing a single superyacht on display that was built out of wood,” Itani reflected.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262487/image/large-807cf5d601fc605e401b8d6626a29e8a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262487"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262484/image/large-ab44a56f02225eb532c9637ba2f5eaf7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262484"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/262485/image/large-675093ccd1a8dc465dee62fd80015b59.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/262485">It makes sense too, as these yachts are rarely – if ever – put up for charter, kept in private use away from the public eye. Boat Shows aren’t relevant for the shipyard’s marketing purposes either, as these wooden dhow-inspired superyachts are invariably single units and quite often the only one built and delivered by that particular shipyard.“There are a few boat builders in the UAE that would build one of these yachts, but the design rarely comes from their in-house team. The unnamed 50-metre Full Custom wooden superyacht was delivered in 2020 and undertook a maintenance appointment last year, which included a complete repaint with a high gloss clear coat. And once onboard it’s the first thing you notice. "There are many well-built traditional dhows in the region," Noble explained. "Qatar is really the number one region for these boats. But they're also not an uncommon sight in and around the UAE.
