Classic schooner Vagrant checks in at Huisfit for rebuild

Written by Charl van Rooy

The 33-metre classic schooner Vagrant has arrived at Huisfit, Royal Huisman’s dedicated refit facility, where the Herreshoff-designed legend will undergo a complete rebuild. Vagrant is expected to be re-launched in 2019, over a century after she first hit the water in Rhode Island, USA.

Work will start by stripping the yacht completely where after sandblasting of her steel hull will prepare the vessel for the necessary renovations to take place. This will include the installation of a new deck and the re-rigging of her schooner-rigged sail plan by Dykstra Naval Architects and Rondal.

Inside, the owner and guest accommodations will be refurbished and new crew quarters installed by Royal Huisman’s skilled team of carpenters. While preserving Vagrant's valuable history, modern materials and equipment will also be installed that will ensure she remains in operation for many more years to come.

More updates on the project as they become available.
