The 33-metre classic schooner Vagrant has arrived at Huisfit, Royal Huisman’s dedicated refit facility, where the Herreshoff-designed legend will undergo a complete rebuild. Vagrant is expected to be re-launched in 2019, over a century after she first hit the water in Rhode Island, USA.

Work will start by stripping the yacht completely where after sandblasting of her steel hull will prepare the vessel for the necessary renovations to take place. This will include the installation of a new deck and the re-rigging of her schooner-rigged sail plan by Dykstra Naval Architects and Rondal.

The HVAC system was completely replaced, including new chillers, air handling units and fan coils.&nbsp;Guest and crew areas were also refreshed, including refurbished staterooms, restored marble surfaces, new blinds and updated interior finishes throughout. On deck, new teak was laid across most exterior areas. Key running gear was serviced and overhauled, including steering, shafts, bow thruster and rudders. For owner Paul Andrews, the search for the right yacht was a journey that spanned more than a decade. By chance I also discovered a local boat carpenter whose family had been building boats in the region for generations.
