Comparing Sanlorenzo’s superyachts: 52Steel vs 500EXP

Written by Laura Nicholls

To most of us in the industry, a Sanlorenzo superyacht is unmistakable. The Italian flair for style and attention to detail have been honed by the yard’s elite selection of designers to create a range of superyachts with customisable spaces, furnishings and endless made-to-measure features. 500 EXP explorer fleetPhoto: SanlorenzoSeven Sins yacht in Anguilla Photo: Charl van Rooy / SuperYacht TimesTwo particular models in the Sanlorenzo superyacht range which have come on leaps and bounds since their first introductions to the market in 2017 and 2018 respectively are the 52Steel and the 500EXP. With eight units of the 52Steel either in build or in action and ten of the 500EXPs also in build or on the water, we discover the stand-out features and key comparison points which have kept these models consistently popular with the owners of today. The EXP line launched in 2015 with the 460EXP Moka – a 42.8-metre displacement steel-hulled superyacht with a 460 GT aluminium superstructure – and was soon expanded in 2018 with the 47-metre 499 GT 500EXP. The volume of the 500EXP volume is perfectly optimised across her four decks, making her appear far larger than her gross tonnage. This clever engineering has allowed for the model to cruise long-range distances in comfort thanks to its luxurious and large interior volumes.

Similarly, the 52Steel was built to be an easily-manageable sized yacht suitable for even the most tucked-away marinas in Italy. Limiting the interior to 499 GT has allowed for five decks with large, well-proportioned and open social spaces. The 52Steel’s impressive volume is cleverly hidden behind unbroken exterior lines and highly contrasting superstructure elements to give her an elegant look, creating a luxury lifestyle yacht that will remain in style for many years to come. Once on board, a key design feature found in both yachts are their extended stern areas. For the 52Steel, the stern is home to the yacht’s beach club and its three sea-level opening doors. This space transforms effortlessly into a floodable garage, a gym or an oceanside lounge. Likewise, in true explorer fashion, the 500EXP features a stern that is adapted to host the owner’s collection of tenders, boats and sailboats up to 9 metres in length. The owner could even choose to carry a seaplane or submarine in this space or use it as a landing platform for helicopters thanks to its lengthening capabilities, with the additional option of storing the yacht’s 5-ton crane in a hidden compartment under the main deck.Ocean's Four yacht upper deck saloon Photo: Sanlorenzo SpaSanlorenzo Seven SinsPhoto: Guillaume PlissonCustom at every corner

As every owner has unique needs and intentions for their superyacht, Sanlorenzo has created a wide range of custom options for the 500EXP model. A pool or outdoor lounging area can be included, as can an onboard gym or an additional indoor saloon and dining area. While the design of the 52Steel remains fixed in terms of the living spaces on the main, upper and sun deck, every yacht owner can integrate their own style into the interior design with the help of their chosen designer.
