The completion of a multi-million dollar renovation at the famous Bitter End Yacht Club in the British Virgin Islands now enables mega yachts up to 145 feet (44m) to dock at the resort, allowing guests and crew to enjoy bare foot island sophistication at the spa, restaurant, pub and shopping emporium.
Established in 1973 as a private retreat, the Bitter End Yacht Club – so named because it is the final island outpost before the open waters of the Atlantic – is a sailing and watersports mecca, with its perfect year-round sailing conditions, eternal sunshine and crystal-blue waters.
The club hosts several key events including the Annual Women on the Water Week which combines exceptional hands-on instruction with superb shoreside activities for a one-of-a-kind experience. Sailing instruction covers all aspects of skippering, sail trimming, sail changing, crewing and teamwork, as well as overboard recovery techniques, sailing smart, downwind sailing and racing. For keen racers, there’s the Annual Pro-Am Regatta. This unique event brings America’s Cup skippers, Olympic medalists, Around the World Race winners and world champions together at the Bitter End Yacht Club, to lead teams made up of resort guests in a week-long competition for the top Pro Am Regatta honors. This exhilarating racing allows amateurs to maximize their on-water experience with the pros as well as enjoy a lively social schedule with fellow sailors off the water.
In addition to its world class events, the Bitter End Yacht Club is renowned as one of the Caribbean’s leading holiday resorts with accredited sailing and dive school, offering 70 moorings and 20 slips for the yachts, powerboats and mega-yachts.
As part of its recent multi-million dollar renovation, the Bitter End Yacht Club has upgraded all of its Beachfront Villas. For those who want a few days ashore, the luxurious new suites feature bright blue, orange and gold Eastern and Caribbean-inspired fabrics - designed exclusively by US-based interior designer Barbara Hulanicki - with Italian-tiled bathrooms, teak vanities, custom-designed bedroom and common area furniture, all designed to coordinate beautifully with the new en-suite art and the unparalleled sea views.
“Our beachfront accommodations are legendary – every room has a wraparound porch and hammock, along with a fantasy view of the Caribbean Sea. The open-air ‘tree house’ style captures the tradewinds and has been our architectural signature for decades. It was time to rejuvenate the interiors in a manner that is consistent with the understated sophisticated style that is Bitter End,” said Dana Hokin, Managing Partner, Bitter End Yacht Club. “My favourite addition? The six-foot mirror over the vanity that reflects the view.”
Additional upgrades include enhancements to Bitter End’s Main Street. Bitter End’s Pub is now operating as a full-service restaurant, featuring a brick pizza oven. With a reputation for having the best pizza in the BVI as well as its flying fish sandwiches and Rotis, the Pub is also a relaxed sports venue. Five flat-screen TVs showcase sporting events from around the world, with a pool table, football and several dart boards making the Pub the hangout of the yachting crowd.
A charming new Caribbean building is now home to the famous Emporium, a provisioning centre for private yacht chefs seeking homemade baked goods, fresh fish and meats, and wines, rums and other essentials. The Emporium has been catering to the cruising yachtsmen’s need for fresh provisions for over 20 years. And for the final luxury, the Bitter End’s full-service Spa has expanded, offering island-inspired treatments by the sea, in the privacy of a guestroom or in one of their four private treatment rooms.
