The Dutch shipyard Moonen has recently commented on the progress of their latest 36.58 metre superyacht, the Moonen Martinique. Part of the brand’s new Caribbean series, her hull is nearing completion whilst work on her superstructure is well underway. With completion expected in 2017, the progress of the new vessel is certainly a testament to the shipyard after facing significant financial problems following the collapse of the global steel market last summer.
The Martinique is designed by René van der Velden, who has showcased a modern twist on the classic Moonen style. The shipyard state that one of the most exciting aspects of the Martinique is the use of high-tensile steel for the hull. Nauta Yachts are responsible for her interior design.
Leveraging on Moonen’s experience with fast displacement boats, propeller tunnels have been added to the vessel, offering low fuel consumption at cruising speeds in addition to a limited draught which will enable her owner’s to explore harder to reach destinations.
The aforementioned collapse of the steel market saw Moonen’s major new shareholder, the steel manufacturer AHMSA, pull out of the build of Martinique. Managing Director Emile Bilterijst comments, “The building of this 37 metre Martinique showed the confidence AHMSA had both in the yard and our products.
"By starting the construction we were able to reduce both the cost price and the delivery time, while increasing quality even further. Unfortunately, no-one could have foreseen the sudden and dramatic collapse of the global steel market. The dramatic impact this had on the cash-flow position of AHMSA led it to pull out of the build of the Martinique.”
With completion scheduled in 2017, the yard are currently looking for a client for the Martinique. “A key next step would be to find a buyer for the Martinique,” concludes Bilterijst. “The hull is around 90 percent finished and the same goes more or less for the superstructure. A new owner can still have major influence on the interior and have a phenomenal new motoryacht ready by the spring of 2017."
