In the second phase, the focus will be on implementing this with a comprehensive materials database and user-friendly calculation tool.&nbsp;This will allow manufacturers to conduct eco-design and comprehensively reduce environmental impact, as well as communicate the environmental footprint to consumers, stakeholders and regulators. The project has already been presented to the EU Commission and has received strong support.The threshold of 24 metres was chosen to align with EU regulations, and will be based on a coherent Life Cycle Assessment approach, following the stringent EU Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules.“We need a proactive and pragmatic approach to sustainability and this project will develop the tools that industry needs,” concluded Robert Marx.

The company has now completed its restructuring, with German-American investor and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a> client Michael Said having acquired the shipyard out of administration to fund the construction of all in-build projects. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308337/image/large-812058c3c2553e503fd4e90ebb28dd38.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308337">The company has also put a new management team in place, led by the new CEO Fabrizio Iarrera, formerly of both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4387" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monte Carlo Yachts (Company)">Monte Carlo Yachts</a> and Dolce Vita Yachts. Said's investment protected the companies 140 employees jobs and has enabled the yard to continue its production, with the company also announcing the launch of the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent</a> 62 catamaran. A further seven of the model are due to launch this year. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent Yachts</a> has also confirmed that it will launch the first 23.95-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5188" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Silent Yachts (Company)">Silent</a> 80 model in 2025, the first of which were due for delivery this year.&nbsp;Iarrera added, "Our yacht owners are passionate about the brand and the yacht itself, as our very strong pipeline of orders shows. Effective April 8, Rossi has relinquished the powers previously granted to him by the board of directors on April 28 and June 22, 2022. As I could not find anyone who offered what I needed, I thought it was something the world needed! Turns out it did – phew! The tenders and toys had always been a specific area of interest for me as a previous captain and a yacht manager, and I believed I had a very specific skill set which others could use on their projects! Prior to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> I was Chief Instructor of a yacht training school, so had a huge amount of experience in all manner of craft. I also had a job driving boats in films, followed by captaining various sailboats between the UK and NZ, followed by a few years working for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Hill Robinson (Company)">Hill Robinson Yacht Management</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303864/image/large-056c07999a8a74c083bc6d9ac61fd644.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303864">Could you elaborate on some key milestones and challenges that have shaped the company's journey so far?&nbsp;Initially it was just my wife and I working from home but very quickly we grew with seemingly large steps such as getting offices, warehousing and growing our staff. In recent years with Brexit, covid and the Ukraine war this has certainly caused some additional challenges. Some of these are positive, such as us setting up a Monaco company and extending our warehousing to Nice to cater for EU clients.We were ahead of the market (first to market) in the offering we were doing as a business when we set up and that certainly helped us grow as a business. Typical tenders onboard yachts were a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2473" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Novurania (Company)">Novurania</a> or a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Zodiac Maritime Ltd. (Company)">Zodiac</a> and toys were usually a Jet Ski and towable. As we know this has greatly changed, with tenders and toys being critical to the enjoyment and marketing of a yacht, with a typical 50 metre spending approximately €100k on a new-build toys setup and yachts having multiple, often custom yacht tenders, limousines and chase boats. In the very early days, many tender manufacturers were unknown and poorly marketed, and our experience made a huge difference in helping guide clients into the best craft for their needs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303865/image/large-c67e542ebaca2327d33f9f53256808f2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303865">In terms of milestones one significant one was where we won a Queen's Award and met the Royals at Buckingham Palace in 2017. We also won numerous other awards such as the British Marine Federation (BMF) Best Marine Business to work for, BMF Business of the Year and Sunday Times Fasttrack awards showing company growth. Other milestones are some large new-build orders which we got a lot of PR and marketing from. We have been lucky to work with some innovative owners and an example which instantly springs to mind is the original Ulysses U107 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4946" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Andromeda107.4m (352'4&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2016">Andromeda</a>) and U116 (now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5796" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Multiverse116.0m (380'7&quot;)Kleven Maritime AS2018">Multiverse</a>) made by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2996" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kleven Maritime AS (Company)">Kleven</a>. On these we completed the full tenders and toy outfitting, showcasing what it is we do. We are now involved in a lot of large new-builds in a similar capacity. In truth, the larger the project the more value we add and are often considered an extension to a new-build team.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/203481/image/large-f2ec189e8856bb169bf1f545e7f7c8b7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/203481">How has the company evolved to meet the changing demands of the industry?&nbsp;There have been several changes over the years to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> and we are now a Group of companies. This includes:&nbsp;• <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6281" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shipyard Supply co (Company)">Shipyard Supply Co</a>, setup in 2018, specifically aimed at manufacturing and selling our own deck equipment out of our Suffolk, UK HQ. This includes transom fenders, carbon pillar fenders, tender whips and more.• Incorporating <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">SYTT</a> MC in 2019, our Monaco business, required due to Brexit but also setup to increase our presence to operational yachts and toy rental in the Med.• Launching <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ROAM (Company)">ROAM</a> boats in 2021, our own brand of aluminium adventure yacht tenders.• Bringing to market our own Superyacht Inflatables, manufactured in the EU and made from a recyclable TPU instead of PVC.&nbsp;A constant theme with our businesses has been the development to offer what the market is after and adjust what we offer to suit, constantly being in evolution. The requests we got back in 2011 are very different to what we now receive. An example of this is that we used to get asked to populate a tender garage and had a very loose brief. Nowadays people are more educated and know specifically what they want. One significant change for us as a business is that now, in 2023, an increasing number of clients are after a manufacturer direct relationship. This is partly due to price, to ensure the best value, service and communication. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/221830/image/large-dcfd9578fc59eae1b469069b3c099f14.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/221830">As the CEO, what strategies have you employed to foster a culture of innovation within the company?Innovation has been easy! Clients simply ask us to develop new things, whether that be products or services. In terms of personnel we are a very relaxed office and everyone mucks in at all levels. Office doors are always open and both Claire and I have always shared all information throughout the company. This is done face to face but we also share info internally on newsletters, days out and corporate events. Everyone is as important as each other, that is why we have things such as company wide bonuses, which are the same value if junior admin to senior management.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/303862/image/large-e593931158c77696b4e0c14e5b233bca.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/303862">Are there any strategic partnerships or collaborations that have played a significant role in the growth and success of&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>?&nbsp;There are a number of ones here, and thinking about this they mostly rotate around who we like, are friends with and trust. Exceptional relationships on the tenders side have been <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5749" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ribeye Tenders (Company)">Ribeye</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4767" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Compass Tenders Ltd (Company)">Compass</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4611" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Argo Navis (Company)">Argo Navis</a>. On the toys side it is hard to look past JOBE, Watersports World and Flite.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2854" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Superyacht Tenders and Toys (Company)">Superyacht Tender and Toys</a>&nbsp;has expanded its scope beyond traditional yacht toys. Can you share insights into the diversification of the company's offerings and how this has contributed to its overall success?&nbsp;There are actually a few ways to answer this. We made our name back in 2011 being a one stop shop. Whether this be fenders, toys, tenders, ropes, gym equipment, procurement and much more. I remember us shipping bottled water around the world for one yacht! We have however had a mini reset in recent years and we now do not market ourselves like this. We no longer do procurement of anything other than tenders and toys. We are very good at what we do, often being seen as a management consultancy and having unique industry experience and do not want to compete with procurement companies selling toilet rolls, crockery, cushions and filters. This change was mainly due to a combination of seeing which products do well for us as a business. Procurement was the worst and one which no staff enjoyed. On the fun front we are working on plans to cycle across the channel on a hydrofoiling bike and skydive from a helicopter in Monaco!Finally, what advice would you give to prospective entrepreneurs in this sector?I would tell them it is terrible, you will never earn money and to look for a different sector! Go and sell crew uniforms or something! The Red Sea, a vital maritime corridor linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal, has long been recognised for its strategic economic importance. Since October 2023, the security dynamics have dramatically shifted. The region's shipping lanes are increasingly compromised by activities linked to Iran and its affiliated non-state actors, such as proxy militias, reflecting a broader escalation in regional tensions.By mid-March of this year, 34 vessels had reported damage from drone missile attacks. On 13 April 2024, a significant development occurred as international media reported that Iranian forces seized the container ship Aries in the Strait of Hormuz. This event was the second major seizure by Iranian forces this year, following the earlier capture of the tanker St. Nikolas by Iran's Navy in January 2024.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310595/image/large-9c930d64e7d8b10c0abe4219adade171.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310595">The geopolitical turbulence has prompted some vessels to navigate the longer and more perilous route around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. This detour, while avoiding the volatile Red Sea, has significantly extended the lead times for vessels and affected global shipping schedules and costs.This article explores the profound impacts of the increased regional instability on the superyacht sector, examining its effects on cruising in the Red and Arabian Seas, as well as on the supply chain for yacht production and new-build projects.How have the attacks in the Red and Arabian seas impacted superyacht cruising and transportation?:Superyachts often navigate through the Red and Arabian Seas for three main reasons. First, the area is crucial for refit and maintenance due to high demand. Second, the growing number of marinas can accommodate an increasing fleet of superyachts, coupled by efforts to promote the Gulf region as a prime destination for superyacht cruising and luxury tourism. Third, it serves as a strategic transit point to the Indian Ocean, offering access to popular destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/291466/image/large-ee3cbb034446ab3174540d0191674f33.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/291466">Using <a href="https://sytiq.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>’s satellite tracking data, we analysed the number of 30-metre-plus superyachts entering the Red Sea from October 2022 to April 2023 and compared it with the same period from October 2023 to April 2024. We observed a significant reduction of 41.59% in the total number of superyachts, with 66 yachts recorded in the latter period compared to 113 in the previous year. In a conversation, Ian Harris, CEO and founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a>, and Yousuf Al Hashimi, Managing Director and Partner at the same firm, acknowledged the decline in the number of superyachts passing through the Suez Canal. They believe, however, that the international media has exaggerated the severity of the situation, noting that even though no actual damage has occurred to superyachts, insurance prices have still increased. This has further discouraged cruising through the Red and Arabian Seas. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310584/image/large-f6ba7135aaeec653cf5ce220eed4dd4c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310584">Bahi Naguib, Managing Partner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7369" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Felix Maritime Agency (Company)">Felix Maritime Agency</a>, echoes <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7335" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Phoenix Yacht Management (Company)">Phoenix Yacht Management</a>'s assertion that media reports have overstated the severity of the situation for superyacht cruising in the region. He points out, “So far, most of the attacks have targeted commercial vessels.” Additionally, Naguib notes a new trend where yachts ranging from seven to 28-metres are increasingly navigating in convoys for enhanced security. Naguib further explained that he had four clients including the 54.86-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts, LLC (Company)">Trinity</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/963" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Purpose54.86m (179'12&quot;)Trinity Yachts, LLC2005">Purpose</a> that initially planned to cruise in Dubai but due to the situation stayed in Egypt.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300281/image/large-b7ed5e2e8a066afb5da0fcc8d37828f9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300281"> Consequently, many superyachts have opted for the route via South Africa’s Cape of Good Hope to reach Europe, minimising risk due to regional conflicts. Jan Maarten Boissevain from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/311" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sevenstar Yacht Transport B.V. (Company)">Sevenstar Yacht Transport</a>, a company specialising in the global transportation of luxury yachts to the Gulf area, explained that there has been an increase in yachts being transported rather than navigating independently due to the conflict in the Gulf of Aden. He further notes that the traditional route through the Suez Canal and Gulf of Aden has been rerouted via South Africa, significantly lengthening transit times and elevating costs. Both Harris and Al Hashimi confirm this, stating that the detour around the Cape of Good Hope adds two to three weeks to travel times and increases costs by 30 to 35 percent.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310582/image/large-1bdbfb9e69c0ef590e1675b6411670a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310582">Elaborating further on the change in transport routes and its implications, Boissevain states: “Insurance premiums and coverage are unstable when sailing in the war-risk area of the Gulf of Aden. Premiums can skyrocket and be cancelled with just a week's notice. This isn't a reliable foundation for transporting expensive yachts, so we now exclusively offer transport to and from the Gulf via the Cape of Good Hope.” Supporting this perspective, Jonathan Hind of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> affirms Boissevain’s point that an alternative route around Africa is now more practical for yachts. He states, “For some yachts, it is feasible, and we have seen several make the trip”.Despite the growing preference for rerouting via the Cape of Good Hope, both Harris and Al Hashimi noted that some owners are reluctant to accept the delays and increased travel time associated with navigating around the Cape. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), approximately 15 percent of global maritime trade volume typically passes through it. This route is crucial for the global supply chain involved in superyacht production, facilitating the transport of essential supplies for yacht building between the East and Europe. For instance, the majority of steel, an essential component in superyacht construction, is sourced from the East. Australia, a major producer of iron ore, sends this commodity to China for processing. The processed steel is then shipped to Europe via the Suez Canal. Moreover, significant components such as engines, generators, and electronics are transported from Europe to the East.The IMF further notes that attacks on vessels in the Red Sea area have reduced traffic through the Suez Canal, extending delivery times by an average of 10 days or more. Additionally, this delay has posed challenges for companies that maintain limited inventories.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310597/image/large-b113a9e74f35d8c1df98f013ad5b56d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310597">When evaluating how regional instability has influenced the prices of crucial raw materials for superyacht construction, Nicola Sanesi, an analyst from CRU Group, observed that steel prices, a key component, were briefly disrupted but soon stabilised to just slightly above pre-crisis levels.Exploring whether and how yacht builders have been influenced by this disruption, Costas Eliopoulos, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/955" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gulf Craft (Company)">Gulf Craft</a> Group’s Production General Manager, explained that as a composite manufacturer, the company has not been significantly impacted. He states, "We primarily don't use steel or aluminium, although we do incorporate some components made from these materials. However, compared to manufacturers who predominantly use metal or aluminium, our usage is much lower. Unsunk, the yacht survived the attack and sailed 900 miles towards Sicily, Italy, before being hauled to San Marco shipyard in Trieste.As Italy capitulated to the Nazi’s in September 1943, her identity was once again changed. From here, the Germans completed her repairs and converted her into a minelayer named Kiebitz – the German word for the Lapwing bird, whose crest indicates a royal status and whose long, sharp beak is a symbol of his violent nature. During this time, Kiebitz is alleged to have laid over 5,000 mines in the northern Adriatic area.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310594/image/large-bd8ec418bbda3d965516d051dfcc0c25.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310594">On 25 November 1944, the vessel faced a formidable setback, hit in an Allied aircraft strike while anchored in Rijeka, Croatia, sinking the yacht. In 1948 the Brodospas supply ship company came to Kiebitz's aid and the vessel was hauled to the surface, using a pioneering technology based on air cylinders, and transported to the Pula-based shipbuilding company, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/880" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Uljanik Shipyard (Company)">Uljanik</a>.
