While the over 40 metre segment continues to demonstrate healthy growth, the 30 to 40 metre category is experiencing a marked decline in new orders.After peaking at 375 new superyacht sales in 2021, the market recorded 195 new-builds in 2024. At the same time, deliveries have continued to rise, from 163 in 2021 to 228 in 2024 as shipyards work through a once-record backlog of orders. That backlog stood at 695 yachts at the start of 2024 but has since begun to decline for the first time in years.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360142/image/large-0e57af53390af9de0374fcf22e4e9dda.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360142">The clearest trend, however, is the divergence between market segments. New orders in the 30 to 40 metre range dropped by 20 percent between 2023 and 2024, while those in the 40 to 50 metre bracket rose by 28 percent. In total, segments above 40 metres recorded a 13 percent increase in new orders during the same period.“The market is moving towards a two-speed dynamic,” said Ralph Dazert during the session. “Buyers in the upper segments are continuing to invest, while the more accessible size ranges are seeing hesitation, likely due to broader economic uncertainties.”In the first quarter of 2025 alone, new sales of 30 to 40 metre yachts dropped dramatically from 35 units in Q1 2024 to just 15. Units above 40 metres also fell, from 36 to 26, hinting at a potential slowdown across the board, possibly influenced by tariff announcements and macroeconomic pressures.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360141/image/large-9012db260b0ffe019d635576b6750ded.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360141">Despite the shifting market conditions, Italy continues to dominate the superyacht construction sector. In 2024, Italian shipyards accounted for 120 new yacht sales above 30 metres, more than double the combined total of all other competing nations. As of 1 January 2025, the country’s shipyards held 371 projects in their order books, representing 53 percent of the global backlog.Notably, Italian projects are also growing in scale. Italy-based shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> has unveiled a new in-build 70-metre superyacht Project Thunderball. The custom-built yacht has been designed in collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. The design of Project Thunderball includes sharp entry lines like a sailing yacht, with curved bilges and will be one of the most efficient hulls <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/15" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Vripack (Company)">Vripack</a> has designed to date.Project Thunderball is described by her builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> as having a “clean, sober, retro style” with vintage lines that draw inspiration from the 32.9-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/726" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="F-10032.9m (107'11&quot;)CRN1983">F-100</a>, launched in 1983. Her owner already has had a number of yachts over the years but Project Thunderball will be his largest yet.The steel and aluminium yacht will feature a six stateroom configuration with colour being a key feature onboard. She features large windows throughout to illuminate the interior with a natural flow of light and bridge the gap between her exterior spaces.Project Thunderball spans five decks with a beam of 11-metres. She can comfortably accommodate a total of 12 guests and 15 crew. Each of her staterooms will feature a different colour scheme that will be mirrored in the marble of her ensuite bathrooms. The owner has different colours in his bedrooms at home and wanted to replicate this onboard Project Thunderball<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/284220/image/large-9fffa2ba3a7f0f7258ae32437286c664.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/284220">Key features onboard Project Thunderball include a gym and spa, a lower deck swimming pool with a built in cold bath system and a winter garden located in the central area of the sundeck. Project Thunderball will also be able to carry two nine-metre tenders on the bow, and a collection of kiteboards, paddleboards and surfboards.The superyacht will be located between the Mediterranean, the Bahamas and Florida and be used as a base for spearfishing, sailing and diving. Project Thunderball also has a draft of 3.2-metres, allowing her to sail and anchor close to shore.&nbsp;According to <a href="https://superyachttimes.ac-page.com/homepage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SYT iQ</a>, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4876" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Group (Company)">Ferretti Group</a> is also currently constructing another three full-custom CRN yachts, including the 72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> superyacht 139, the 67-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> superyacht 143 and the 85-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/12" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CRN (Company)">CRN</a> superyacht 144.
